Yeah I feel people try to master one technique at a time but it is better to be ok with 7 moves that all connect than master 1 but have no idea what to do if they defend.
I took a year off from training due to covid and now I have all these crazy dummy holes in my game. Thank you for posting these overview videos, they've been good in helping me remember where I need to tighten up my technique.
This is one of the best passing videos I’ve seen, because it addresses my main issue with passing which is that I often try to force a pass that isn’t right for the situation. Now I’m going to watch this another dozen times before this morning’s open mat. :)
Yeah for sure I have a longer version of this where I go much more in depth but this version is great where it just gives fast solutions and something to consider for each situation.
@@JonThomasBJJ I use Grapplers Guide, and the detail in your content there is incredible, but this quick overview really helps me cement when to use what.
At first I thought it was not serious, how could you possibly make a 6 min video on guard passing, then I watched it, and I was agreably surprised by the simple and yet powerful content, very helpful to grasp a whole picture as well as some very interesting details.
Greetings from France, that video is absolutely dope and right on the spot as I try to improve my passing game, and showing this system is marvelous! Thank you so much Jon!!! Oss!!!
@@JonThomasBJJ Oh yes! because generally we tend to be techniques collectors but I needed a system of concepts to answer my questions and the video is on spot!
@@JonThomasBJJ not only in one place, but with a logic and non non-sense explanation. Even 3 - 4 basic passing techniques but well mastered AND combined together creates a huge number of combinations and possibilities.
@@cugnaoozen9956 thanks buddy! Yeah see the whole big picture like this helps a lot and it really takes a broader understanding to be able to condense it all like this.
I am new to your channel, just a few weeks now, and you are helping my game with your techniques and skills. The only thing I would suggest ( positive only / much respect) is to slow down everything. Both verbally and physically would be helpful. If the videos are longer we will still watch. Once again much respect to you and your channel. Thank you, Rick Daniels
Hey buddy thanks for the feedback, I have really long videos as well where I’m more thorough, but as I’m trying to make content for many different people. Some people want a short and concise video that cover a lot of topics fast so they get broader context, the analytics reflect that as well. If you want more thorough longer format check out my video complete guard passing guide. I think it’s like 17 min similar topic as this but way more deep.
hey jon can you please make a video on oomplata finishing details, i find when i throw in the omoplata from collar sleeve the opponent will take a pants grip on me and deadlift/stack me, cant seem to find a counter, even when i hook the leg over the back in an attempt to break their posture.
It would be great to show these where the guy has grips with his hands of where he is framing which obviously he will do in true sparring situations. This is always the difficulty as a learner to get
I watched your 28 minute video Complete Guard Passing Overview first, then I watched this. This was a good review. When he was (I call it) Nautilus (where he's butt and cleats on the ground, like Marcelo likes, where there isn't a 'bike stand' arm behind him), I expected you to shove both wrists into his chest. Hm. Might have to review again. Press '6'. It's at about 3:35
Hey buddy I’m not the best a pressure over under double under style passing, but if you check out my video with Andris Brunovskis he covers a lot with it
Could you give a "Complete Guard Playing System"? I love seeing Cross/Sleeve, DLR, etc., but honestly I get lost with what I should be prioritizing in the beginning of a match. I feel that would help me organize my system and dive into things deeper if I had a guideline that said "Typically go for this, if not, fall back on this, etc."
This may be a silly question but when I do the lunging knee cut I am hitting my partner in their sensitive areas and then I am the guy who is just hitting everyone in the family jewels. If I slow it down then they see it coming so what can I do to improve on it without hurting my partners?
Hey Jon, thank you for the video awesome as always! Another question from me again, sorry Jon! How do you feel about the recent popularity in getting to Headquarters/split squat position to then switch into top half guard passing? It’s not the sexiest Jiujitsu to watch, but a lot of my peers are into it at the moment after watching Danaher’s DVD and I’ve seen it a lot in competition the last couple of years, wanted to know if you’ve tried much of it. thank you as always!
Hmm can you post a link to what you are referring too? In the gi I feel that position is harder to force attacks from especially if they use a deep lasso to off balance a lot, but no gi I think it could be really good. Are you referring to trapping a leg and Mikey Squatting?
@@JonThomasBJJ Hello Jon, thank you very much for replying. So unfortunately, there is no video online, only on his DVD. However I can explain it easily from here. The instructional is done completely in the Gi, but I’m not much of a No-Gi player. Perhaps you’re correct though, you have much more experience than me. Anyway to enter the position, If you get to the knee slide position you reach at 4:08 in your video, you know how your opponent will start framing and can make the the knee slide tricky? What you would do instead, to alleviate this problem, is to bring in and jam your left knee into his right side hip and go chest to chest. While bringing your right arm to his left hip. You will now be in top half guard and can start passing from top half guard, instead of having to deal with frames and lasso. You can then do things like pull his lapel out and bring round like a crossface and pass from half guard to make it more of a pressure pass. Again, I’m not sure how effective it is, but people do keep passing me with it and I was interested to know if you think its more effective to pass from half guard, rather than knee slice in this scenario if you were given the choice. Thank you Jon and sorry for the long message!
@@aidanlee8804 hey buddy from what you are describing it seems extremely difficult to force someone to half guard easily that way. Especially if they have a good open guard. Can you try to find an example of this being used in comp somewhere. Just seems like the person would lasso as soon as you trap leg, also trapping the leg in first place can be very tricky.
I don’t need an essay about stuff, a broad overview is much more helpful for me to be honest
Yeah I feel people try to master one technique at a time but it is better to be ok with 7 moves that all connect than master 1 but have no idea what to do if they defend.
Really appreciate the broad concept approach - gives much food for thought without data overload. My preferred method of both learning and teaching
Doesn’t get much simpler than this. Thank you - oss.
