This is part 3 of a series on EU reform, where the European Parliament has set the stage for a potential seismic shift towards a more federalized European Union. This initiative calls for a comprehensive reshaping of EU institutions, exemplified by changes to the presidential election process and the veto vote mechanism. It also advocates for expanding EU competencies, granting the Union greater exclusive powers that may redefine the balance between EU governance and national sovereignty. Reforms are clearly needed on the EU and should have happened years ago, and for me, the EU needs reforms in connecting the project with its citizens, popularise movements take advantage of the disconnect the EU has with its citizens, especially with the less democratic aspects of it like the Commission.
Personally, I think the veto rule needs to go or at the very least, it needs to be done in a less obstructive way because at the moment, it's being used too much for politics on things that are not related to what they are talking about, basically, some countries use it to carry favours on other policies.
Another thing is that I think the European Parliament needs to be given more powers, maybe at the expense of the EU Commission or expanded powers over what the EU has now.
I also think it's high time the EU Commission and President are merged together and should be directly elected by the citizens, with any luck, that will help connect the citizens more with the project.
Other reforms on integration might be more difficult to achieve but I do feel more is needed, especially on military, forign policy matters and on the internal EU market so it can function better for its citizens, but personally, I think on military and forign policy matters, it will be very difficult to get all 27 countries onboard and they should go about it like they did with the Euro and Schengen zone, basically, try and get as many countries onboard and they can move ahead, as they make it work, the door should be open for others to join at a later date, I think this is a better way of getting movement without needing all members onboard, and at least it allows the countries that want to move forward to do so without being held up by the ones that don't, either way, big changes are needed if we Europeans want to stay competitive with the US and China long term.
Electing a "european leader" by the citizens directly isn't as simple and good solution. For one, the member states have wildly different population sizes, so if everyone votes their own country, germany wins every time. And how does say a portuguese politician connect with finnish voters for example or vice versa. Its much simpler to elect representatives from our own countries and let them sort it out

Love the addition of the MEP votes (like I suggested last video)! Make the dynamics clear and bring EU politics closer to home at the same time. My suggestion is to show the parties' for/against bars relative to their size in Parliament. I cannot tell if it was accepted or not, and by what margin.

The problem is, I assume unanimity needs to be reached during this convention. And I can think of one country that is going to make that very difficult.

Reform first, then expansion
1:24 Unanimous approval for changing the Treaties is a MASSIVE hurdle. Certain member states (notably Hungary and Slovakia) are likely to sabotage any change to the status quo - simply by using the very veto power that the rest of the member states would like to abolish.
The veto power was originally envisioned as safeguard to ensure that small countries like Denmark wouldn't be sidelined by the larger countries in key decisions. I'm old enough to remember when Denmark and the UK were the "troublemakers" of the EU because of their resistance to further integration/harmonization. Nowadays, the UK is gone and Denmark has become much more pro-EU.
Do you think the UK might return/rejoin?
@@RealOGfikey Nah, that would signal that EU membership is a revolving-door club where members can just leave on a whim or to prove a point to their domestic audience.
Who knows, perhaps in a generation or two, negotiations to rejoin could become a possibilty, once all the current UK politicians have retired.

@@attilaabonyi8879 To be perfectly honest with you, I don't think it ever will. While it was a member it had a sweetheart deal. Vetoes, opt-outs, retention of its own currency etc,. The EU has said that all that will be gone if it wanted to rejoin. It's the very conditions that will mean a permanent exit.

There are citizens of countries in Europe.
Being a Polish citizen e.g. makes one a citizen of Poland, even when Poland is in the EU. It does not make me an EU citizen. Legally there are no EU citizens.

The EU must become a federal country like the US just the Europe version. Imagine how strong this would be. It would be the second strongest Country in the World with the 2. largest economy that could surpass even the US.

I mean I 100% agree with everything you said, but a convention requiring approval by all countries means for some countries a referendum, which is almost sure to be rejected by quite a few countries, and the time it would take (and the renegotiations that would water the whole thing down), would take years... so I can understand why Ursula is looking for another way, one that would be quick (because with Ukraine and the US elections it's getting very urgent to unlock the EU), and that would allow for a bypass for the autocrats like Orban, or the huge misinformation campaign and bad feelings about the EU throughout the continent... people would reject those changes in the referendum, simply because they will never be happy with everything, and the propagandas of the far right would manipulate enough people to make the proposal fail... I mean I hope I am wrong, but that seems a bit risky

Why would Germany lose wealth if we had a unified EU? Germany would massively benefit from a common market, just like what has been happening for decades.
Even in one country, there are quite big differences in economic levels in different areas.

A question : if i would a federal EU, or at least a more integtated EU, should i vote for EPP or renew ?
Suggestion: Can you give updates on big proposals and when each gets an update or significant revision in the years until the important piece of legislation has passed. There are a lot of big ones that are being debated and national news prefers to cover only national bills being debated within the state.
There is a lot in the works. I'm particularly interested in updates to the new right-to-repair laws, its benefits and shortcomings with each revision and what effects it has on EU citizens.
But there are so many more and I think coverage, even in short form 2-5 minute update videos, will help us understand what work the EU parliament is actually doing each month. Plus it's an endless source of content to produce between longer-formed ones.
I would love too. But we are still quite a small team. We need to see how we can scale that. How much importance do you put on animation? We can pump out a lot more content if we show our faces more instead of time consuming animation.

Yeah, I think so.
Unfortunately that won't work. Some country will always block. The only option I see is the tier system. The European Economic Community on the ground, then the EU in its current form and a European federation on top of it. It could start again with 5 or 6 countries and the rest will follow when they are ready.
It needs to work if Europe wants to survive with the current common values.
When European Federation comes I hope it stops ignoring the military aspect, yes Europe has had a bloody history but history shows what happens to weak nations.

I think it was made way too hard to make changes in the eu treaties. Heads of state naturally don’t want to do it because they know it depends on being approved by every country. Like some countries even have to hold national referendums which after Brexit are not the exact thing that you want to repeat. So were kind of stuck with this not really capable EU that will depend on national vetoes by small countries such as Hungary that abuse it only as a cash cow. So people only get more frustrated by the EU and it’s notorious incapability and disapprove of it even more as a result. It’s a dangerous cycle.

Europe will become unified as a federated nation but it may require a crisis to get there like most unifications in history. I think the issue of advancing this today is that many nations rally behind their flag and this could risk disenfranchised EU members but eventually it will become reality. Russia may try and prevent this by influencing EU members that are more pro Russia to put up a fight and that could be a problem so there is a risk of a federal Europe being made up of fewer nations than today which is not great. I am not sure what the solution is for that.
i think when government gets too big they becomes too detach from the people they are supposed to represent.

If Europe wants to be a strong player and contender in the Global Game of Thrones, it has no choice but to be Unified. IF Europe keeps thinking purely Individually instead of unified, then Europe is easy picking for the more ambitious influence from all sides, East, West and even South.
A unified Europe is the key to our survival. Sure not everyone will like it, but there is no such thing as a model that pleases EVERYONE, but a unified Europe is best for all Europeans.
This is the primary reason that the UK left the cesspit that is the EU.

I personally have more trust in EU politicians than in our local politicians. At least they've done much more to us than our politicians have ever done.
We desperately need treaty reform, because the current system de facto means that laws are made by a small group of people in the Trilog. I mean that’s just an insane way to structure a government for 400 million people.
The EU will only become weaker if poor countries join it. Moreover, they are countries with conflicts. It is great that these countries are included, but there must also be legislation to expel countries from the EU if they do not comply with EU rules or finances. EU countries that contribute a lot financially should also be given more seats in the EU parliament. The Netherlands contributes much more financially, but still has fewer seats than the weaker Spain, Hungary and Poland. That is why people in the Netherlands have very negative views about these European countries. Receive money but do not want to follow the rules.
I like that you guys are so passionate about this but I think for this to really work some countries should get out of the union because some countries dont rly like the union as it is nevermind a federation. And this countries dont go out because its a huge drama to go out like it happened with the UK. If the eu made a mechanism that always countries to get out without almost as much fussle as getting in and countries that dont want to be part of this easily get out than i think this new Europe of federation will work. I and my countrymen for one are against Europe as it is evermind a federation and we have always been more aligned with Washington DC than with Berlin or Brussels. Anyway i wish everyone the best !!

Danger looming here ! What makes the success story of EU is that small nations can block the process and need to be be convinced to go ahead and have their demands considered. Diversity of opinion is was makes EU unique and attractive. Aligning in a single mould is plainly dangerous especially if efficiency is evoked. Do not be fooled and fall into the trap. Long life to EU, a never tried experience so far and a set example of common identity driven by self sovereign and, sadly too often, by (nationalistic) conflicting interest. We are not America here, we are plainly Europeans. A slow process surely but a secure path.
If we go to majority vote then I think it's time to step out of the EU. Smaller countries, especially in eastern europe will get steamrolled.
It won't be majority vote though, but supermajority. At least 65% of countries or population will be needed for some things to be approved.

@@MilIMeta Actually not, the 80-85% target was actually the adjustment made by EU Made Simple, what's written in the document is the 55-65% supermajority. The big problem about the 80-85% hypermajority is that it'd only take Germany to approve any single law.
Why are we being told about the EU? I thought we had left the EU. Shows our politicians haven't really left Europe.
All EU countries should be unanimous in the decisions, taking political decisions on the majority will make only for an internal political game based on consences/propaganda and not real and important reforms for all Europe.
If we remove the unanimous consent, Europe is destined to die and corrupts.
That being said, the ways unanimous consent is reached could differ, for example: "All countries of the EU must express consent from the majority of their population" so for example if the majority of the population of each european union country voted Yes, than the consensus is basically unanimous and all countries agree that this hypothetical reform is good for the well being of Europe and for each country in it too.
Imagine if 14 countries voted YES (with 51% of yes votes for each) and the other 13 voted NO (with 99% of no votes for each), basically what you have is an alliance of countries that flip coined a Yes thanks to propaganda and political agendas and an other half of European countries wich votes meant nothing at all, and they get basically abused by the system.
It will become just a dictatorship masked as democracy, which is already true for many countries to be honest. 🙉🙈

I don't want a US style president. Just give the Parliament the right of initiative and keep the different presidents for each of the institutions. That seems more democratic to me than giving one individual a colossal amount of power for 4-8 years.

The UNITED Mexican states. On the Mexican Peso it says “The United States of Mexico”. So Mexico is a federation.

The right of veto should be reserved for the big countries of the EU and the future member (Russia) (in this case Russia is considering joining the EU), but in order to preserve democracy, small countries also need the right of veto (if two or three countries of the region negotiate on this issue to use the veto).😊

I'm European and I'm against point 6. "Parliament nominates EU President". In my opinion, it should be the citizens who will vote for single EU President. Let the EU President be democratically elected.

I am British and yes I supported Brexit and voted leave.I still support Brexit and I don’t regret voting to leave either.
Now I personally think that all the current EU countries should be told that there must be and will be full integration without fail and without vetoes etc etc.All EU countries should be told that they will join the Euro without fail by say 1st January 2030.Non negotiable.
I think any country that wants to join the EU should be in no doubt that full integration will be demanded of them,non negotiable.And upon accession to the EU.
And for me the countries that aren’t in the Euro but members of the EU should be given an ultimatum,join the Euro by 1st Jan 2030…or leave the EU altogether.
And if Poland,Denmark,Czech Republic,Hungary,Romania and Bulgaria who have their own currencies still aren’t happy at having to ditch their currencies then they should simply leave the EU like us Brits did.
And at my country level this would once and for all shut up those who still refuse to accept we have left the EU and want to rejoin because the loss of our £ Sterling is something the British rightly will not accept.

I don’t mind people opposing Brexit or people saying it has been a disaster, but those that say “you don’t know what you voted for” probably frustrate me the most. The future of the EU is quite unclear (as evident in this series) and I imagine a lot of Brits (including those that voted remain) would be uncomfortable with a federal EU.

United European Federation is a horrible idea. I'm glad to live in a country where citizens forbade their politicians to even negotiate about joining the EU.
European Union should be just a trade union. The best thing about Europe is its diversity. My home country (Czech republic, formerly Czechoslovakia) is a proof that two countries with friendly relations are better than one union where majority rules over minorities.

Actually it was never just about trade union. From the start of the integration it was mainly political issue. To stop frequent conflict in the Europe.
Now after long decades of integration, when there is very dense network of relations, treaties, even common parlament and laws it is just funny that some people don't understand where the EU is and suggesting to return somewhere in fifties where it all started. Even at that times the intentions where very clear. Ever deeper integration. There is a lot of "just economic blocks" in the world but no one is as deep and functioning as the EU, where are no borders for people, businesses and many common and synchronised laws. Okay, for the next EU elections, Im either voting for the greens or S&D,Im not an eloquent guy but I just hope that the reform will strike the right balance between the mechanisms that enhance accountability, transparency without slowing the EU and burying it in bureaucracy and the need to have a stronger, more centralized EU that takes decisions quickly while still taking into account the interests of all of its members, not just the bigger ones.
And the corruption in the EU parliament, that sh!t has GOT to go, the rules are still too lax...

…And it seems to me that this whole “EU against the world” renew/reform is done by the French clique. Although the headquarters are in Belgium, the mind behind this attempt to gain power after ww2 is done by France. There is a hidden war of esoteric beliefs which lasts about hundreds of years. Guys like Elon support Meloni (ID), and they also say we won WW2. So, I see this tectonic shift as; losing side trying to create One Europe which is exciting to say the least.
Im sorry but ECR and ID will increase their presence in the parliament and they will fight this. Right wing parties that are eurosceptic are very popular in majority of EU countries, so this is not happening any time soon

If the EU federalized it would absolutely rival the US and given that practically all people in Europe speak English, language is not a problem. The US did it with FANTASTIC results and we can do it too.

How they are actively trying to erase as many cultures and ethnic identities using illegal immigration. the same way how the soviets tried and failed. and, this is just one aspect. there's way more things that are starting to look similar. but first, you need to read more about the soviet union to see them. you're spanish, isolated in the west. you probably know nothing about how it is to live under the soviet union.

A federation is the way to go! Nations are weak, the union is strong.
The presentation on the polls was great. Now I know which parties voted for reforms. In my country this hasn't played enough, people don't know anything about this change (Greece). But I can see new parties being formed and moves by politicians, that correlate with the big change. Thankfully my party (ND) though being EPP, its members where in the 48% that voted in favour of the change so it was a relief. EU is the first ever union taking form under piece conditions. Thankfully all these recent crises showed that if you stay alone you cant handle the issues (call me Brexit). Further federation, build up of "EU nationhood" is really important. In ancient Greece Alexander made this with the battle of Cheronia. A battle, that took us here today. Later in the 3rd century ac, Romans took one of the most brave decisions ever been made. They decided to give citizenship to all individuals of the empire. They killed their romanship for the good of the space around us. That's why you don't see a roman today. You do see Greekromans, Italianromans, Germanromans etc. The wealth of EU is its member's culture and that must be safeguarded at all cost. But we go nowhere if our external partners run faster than we do. There will be nothing to protect if you cant compete.

I realy like your videos and I am aware, that you have to be this technical on this topics...but this is exactly why europe never will become "accesable" for the "average joe". Compared to the USA for example everbody knows how the fuck trump is and what he can do and change, you cant tell this for the EU.

I firmly support a greater European federalisation and for the sake of the effective work of the institutions they have to be reformed. Swifter decision making process is needed. What I find disturbing is that the political groups which are in support of a federal governance are highly unacceptable as parties on a national level.
Reform, reform and more reforms.
