Really loving these chats. I was almost one of the mould making /3D printing guys for GW, but couldn’t do the shift patterns. Every time I talk about how the process is done it has always attracted hate from people who insist GW don’t dish out resin minis to be painted, etc. The more insight and education that can reach the masses about the miniature industry the better.

Darran Latham I feel pushed my painting to a much higher level. I loved his painting videos on RUclips. Shame he had to take them down because it was alway interesting to see his approach to shading and color usage.
Not just you. It seemed to have started when they switched to the SHURE mic. Since then, I could swear all of them (i.e. podcasts) have weird audio distortion, especially so when there are concurrent voice input. For some reason, it's more jarring in this one though. Doesn't take away from the quality of the content, but it's hard to listen to at times unfortunately.
The big issue with the D&D thing wasn't so much fans not being able to monetise content as easily, but more the part that Wizards/Hasbro wanted to force every single person or company publishing content using the existing agreement (which they had promised was irrevocable) to switch to the new one, which would give Wizards of the Coast "nonexclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, sub-licensable, royalty-free license" to take anything published and reuse it without compensation or acknowledgement.
I believe the original Citadel paints were made for GW by a company called Coat d'Arms. This was when they were in the tall round pots with names like Skull White, Chaos Black, Goblin Green, Bad Moon Yellow etc. After Citadel went with a new manufacturer and changed all the colour names, Coat d'Arms continued making them for their own range and you can still buy them to this day.
No, the manufacturer is HMG Paints. They supply Coat D’Arms, Privateer Press P3 Paints, and Foundry Paints. CDA has the same/similar names as it’s the result of them basically asking HMG to keep making the GW line under a new name when GW switched suppliers.
Really glad that you brought up that some (all?) of the current Citadel paints have changed over the years, I thought I was going mad. Mephiston Red has definitely changed between 2019 and 2022 - the newer pots I've had are considerably brighter than the originals.

Love how Geoff was just here, building a model for fuck all. And it evolved into a 50 minute conversation. Great podcast ya'll. Definitely a fantastic podcast for the hobby.
Great conversation guys - really love Geoff's take on how 3D printing could work in a Workshop. 3D printing is still very much a 'rapid prototyping' system, but won't be long til it moves on to a point where it will be entirely possible to mass produce or print on demand like this. Some boutique third party outlets are already doing this. I work in 3D scanning and printing at the moment, and it's got amazing potential in my specialism in museums/archaeology etc, but it's not yet there for hard commercial use.

Have you ever read Imperial Armour 13 (War Machines of Chaos) - it's very much a part of the setting these things are used by the traitors across time :)
While I think 3D printing is still a long way off from being an everyday thing for most hobbyists, there's still an initial learning curve to overcome but it is becoming just another creative tool rather than the "hobby in it's own right" it was say only 2yrs ago. To the point that I would be very surprised if it wasn't being viewed as an existential threat to GW's current business model. One thing I could potentially see them doing is possibly having ForgeWorld supplementing with or even transition away from cast-resin products to become more of a print-on-demand style service.
The old metal Balrog was my first ever kit. The guy at the local GW encouraged me to get it cause it was super powerful. I was 14. So, I built it and just dealt with the gaps everywhere cause I had no green stuff skills! Haha Corax white spray is horrendous in Australia, I think it's something to do with the humidity. The off-whites are also bad, I ended up having to put fishing sinkers in all the pots to constantly shake them like spray paints. Come to think of it, the fishing sinkers suit the theme of this video...
Rakarth flesh / Denab stone was amazing when it was foundation paint, not saying they where all great but that one was you haven't known hell until you've had to build multiple dwarf warmachines to put together, that DAKKA axe thrower
I've found recently several citadel paints I've picked up have been watery. No matter how much I shake the pot or stir it the paint is still like water. So I've started to pick up Vallejo when I need a replacement.
for resin and metal models, superglue activator changed my life! I use the Bob Smith Industries stuff but you can get aerosol activators from places like screwfix. Also, baking soda (bicarb in the UK) is great as a gap filler on resin when it's mixed with superglue.
Reminds me of duncans story around the creation of barak nar burgundy. This paint was created off themix he used to paint barak nar kharadron in AoS....and how the colour was totally different to what GW said it was and they eventually created thenew paint from his mix. I hear they also use 3ups in some detail shots.
Really enjoy these wide ranging talks. : ) The Stars Wars cosplayers also raised the prices and increased the rarity on C96 "broomhandle" Mausers years ago. Apparently, these guns used to be reasonably priced. But not after Han Solo!
The most terrifying metal kit that a young customer once brought in was Zachariah The Everliving. It was a skinny zombie dragon with a top heavy mount. The ankles were the key contact point and could barely fit a pin. It was hell.
In the Action Man scale there are some manufacturers who make short runs of figures complete with all the equipment. Some are based on Movie actors in particular rolls. And some are just big historical models, GW, ACW, Westerns.
Another great chinwag! Love these vids - they're the perfect accompaniment for when I'm having a bit of supper or even a late night snack with a glass of milk! But I want to take the opportunity too ask, because I'm eagerly awaiting your Necromunda content - are you guys planning to share any videos of how you go about painting your gangs? If not, would you consider it? I'd love to see how you guys go about it, especially Geoff's Delaque as I'm yet to paint mine!
I remember doing some kind of tour of Warhammer World (or possibly at a Games Day) as a kid where they explained some of the process for printing the 'red glass' miniature parts to make the molds, way before consumer-grade 3D printing was possible. It was something involving shining lasers through a liquid which caused it to harden at the points where they intersected. Seemed like magic at the time, too. Interesting to hear that the process seems not to have changed much in what must be towards 20 years.
Absolutely love the pod! I have a question for Geoff. Has the amount of nerdy Warhammer types coming in to your barber shop increased since starting the podcast? 😁
Adding airbrush thinner and sometimes some flow improver can "fix" the newer rakarth flesh et al to make them smoother again. It will however make it thinner
The Warbringer kit from Adeptus Titanicus was brilliant because all the armor panels that could be confused had molded RF, RR, RI, RO for Different Right/Left Front/Rear/Inside/Outside orientations
I would love to here how the kits go wrong because i put together a box stormcast vanguard figures, the instructions don’t match how the figures are labelled. And on the how GW staffers would help you with stuff, I had a green knight Warhammer figure that i had no idea how to assemble and a chap showed me to pin the model.
I print all my attachments, 15mm ww2 tanks etc. As long as the CAD design is done properly, with new printers the products are SMOOTH. GW 100% prints and it's easy to spot when you do it yourself. All good though, plastic is FAR less effort even now - which is why I don't 3d print armies / units etc just gear.
henry - "he didn't burn down the whole school, the fire damage was limited to one or two classrooms *nervous laughter*" one of the oak boys - "I'll do better next time!" just for you patrick, just caught up with the second season of dungeons and dads and have gotten a friend into it. he just got to the castle fight (I think)
Listening to you talking about the sprues and tooling design and I totally agree. People often say things like "Games Workshop make the best Miniatures in the world" and being honest, they don't. They make excellent Miniatures but I wouldn't say they are the best; I could rattle off a list of miniatures companies that are as good or better when viewed as a finished product. But the tooling of the plastic kits is where they really excel. I would say that Games Workshop's tooling is as good, if not better, than most scale model companies. Maybe only beaten by some of the Gundam kits. The stuff Games Workshop can do as a plastic kit is pretty amazing. On the subject of the GW lawsuit in the USA. The company was Chapterhouse studios and they weren't just making conversion parts, there were entire models for things GW had written in their lore and didn't make miniatures for. And then there were conversion bits as well. Overall, Chapterhouse studios is widely considered to have "won", the judge ruled in favour of Chapterhouse on more counts than for GW. However it was also pretty much a pyrrhic victory as the costs of fighting the lawsuit left Chapterhouse in a significant amount of debt and they went bankrupt not long after the conclusion of the lawsuit. There were quite a lot of lessons learned by GW in the wake of that and they either rushed out a lot of really poor Miniatures to plug the gaps or removed models from various codices. They got themselves, fairly quickly, into a position where all units described in the rules had models
I have a colour scheme that requires my shades to cover the whole mini and make it just the right kinda dirty…. The new shades don’t do this and it annoys me a lot
On the 3d printing thing. 3 words as a Tau player. Cyclic ion blasters. Why have the option of weapon load outs (and multiple ones at that) for weapons that aren’t in the box.
That's Willrow Hood and the "Running of the Hoods" with regards to the dude in Empire with the Ice Cream maker. (Just in case no-one else has put it in the comments)
@@thepaintingphase I think employing someone that wears the same clothes is probably better. Their arm would just appear in every episode but it would have the appearance of it being Pat's. It's the only logical thing to do.
That 1:6 Cadian was a Kickstarter campaign. It seems like a lot of people got screwed over and didnt get their figures in the end. And those that did said the quality wasn't great.
Games Workshop may seem slow to pick up technology, or at least appear too, but I would stake my right nut on the fact that they have and are investigating how to best use technology to earn the best financial return from it when they eventually do make the leap.
I have a pot of naggaroth night from day 1 of the range and it is straught up 1 stage darker. Then theres balthasar gold thats now red/copper compaired to the old pots
Yeah there’s quite a few come to think of it, not ideal when it’s been pitched as a consistent paint range that and I quote, ‘if you paint an army and add miniatures into your army next week or 20yrs from now they will still match’ hmm not if you keep changing the tone
Yeah we had some issues, found the offending part and threw it in the bin. Monday's release we're back to sounding normal again thankfully. Invested in a new recorder and it's solved the problem.
For what it's worth, the 40k range of rhinos, predators and land raiders are all Mars pattern variants which the legions all had access to during the Great Crusade. So it ultimately just comes down to an aesthetic choice.
I built (and still have) the old LR Crusader as a kid and agree with the bolters but it was a real achievement once it was done as a 12 year old. I’ve built a few FW models over the years but the hardest model I came across that taught me pinning etc was the og metal nightbringer

I’m loving this type of video! It’s quickly becoming something that I crave more of :) ever thought of releasing it as an actual podcast? :)
We're up on Spotify!
@@thepaintingphase amazing!!! I’ll get it up! :D
10:20 hwo are they talking about? Ninjon?
Yes, we were talking about Ninjon.
This was a great episode of virtual my weekly local GW visit XD
Another great podcast. Cuppa tea, biscuits, cutting some spru. Perfect.
Easily the best podcast for geeks keep up the great work 👍🏻
Very Kind, cheers!
I've found recently several citadel paints I've picked up have been watery. No matter how much I shake the pot or stir it the paint is still like water. So I've started to pick up Vallejo when I need a replacement.
Yeah it does seem to be a more regular thing, and if it’s not sorted out, folks are just gonna go elsewhere
for resin and metal models, superglue activator changed my life! I use the Bob Smith Industries stuff but you can get aerosol activators from places like screwfix. Also, baking soda (bicarb in the UK) is great as a gap filler on resin when it's mixed with superglue.
25:20 tyranid gargoyles. Why were they one of the few metal mods I had on flying stand
Everytime I watch a vid the subs just keep going up 😀😀 you guys deserve it! Topcast
Thanks so much!! 😍😍😍
@@thepaintingphase your welcome 😀
Reminds me of duncans story around the creation of barak nar burgundy. This paint was created off themix he used to paint barak nar kharadron in AoS....and how the colour was totally different to what GW said it was and they eventually created thenew paint from his mix. I hear they also use 3ups in some detail shots.
Really enjoy these wide ranging talks. : )
The Stars Wars cosplayers also raised the prices and increased the rarity on C96 "broomhandle" Mausers years ago. Apparently, these guns used to be reasonably priced. But not after Han Solo!
Kinda wished the Spotify version would be up at the same time. Wonderful podcast to listen to.
Love, these videos, keep up the good work!
The most terrifying metal kit that a young customer once brought in was Zachariah The Everliving. It was a skinny zombie dragon with a top heavy mount. The ankles were the key contact point and could barely fit a pin. It was hell.
I love hearing about hellish models.
In the Action Man scale there are some manufacturers who make short runs of figures complete with all the equipment. Some are based on Movie actors in particular rolls. And some are just big historical models, GW, ACW, Westerns.
Love the chat shows
Oh, that intro was on point Peachy, that looks a cosy jumper, though
For Peachy Workshop is the Hotel California :D
Another great chinwag! Love these vids - they're the perfect accompaniment for when I'm having a bit of supper or even a late night snack with a glass of milk! But I want to take the opportunity too ask, because I'm eagerly awaiting your Necromunda content - are you guys planning to share any videos of how you go about painting your gangs? If not, would you consider it? I'd love to see how you guys go about it, especially Geoff's Delaque as I'm yet to paint mine!
That sounds like a great idea. I’ll mention it to the crew - Geoff
I was told this was a North Sea fishing podcast. While disappointed, I am also pleased.
Absolutely love the pod! I have a question for Geoff. Has the amount of nerdy Warhammer types coming in to your barber shop increased since starting the podcast? 😁
Yes I have had three really cool guys come in. Nerdy Barbers maybe a niche service going forward!
Adding airbrush thinner and sometimes some flow improver can "fix" the newer rakarth flesh et al to make them smoother again. It will however make it thinner
Peachy, you really seem to love LOTR, which is great because so do I :) any chance of some future MESBG miniature painting videos?
The Warbringer kit from Adeptus Titanicus was brilliant because all the armor panels that could be confused had molded RF, RR, RI, RO for Different Right/Left Front/Rear/Inside/Outside orientations
Smart! I like it when they’re super clear like that.
I have used two thin coats by Duncan roads and seam to be a better version of citadel paints
Speaking of Darren Latham, I noticed GW seem to have "accidentally" forgotten to put his surname in the article about designing Angron.
And then in that very article, they linked to a different article that did.
henry - "he didn't burn down the whole school, the fire damage was limited to one or two classrooms *nervous laughter*"
one of the oak boys - "I'll do better next time!"
just for you patrick, just caught up with the second season of dungeons and dads and have gotten a friend into it. he just got to the castle fight (I think)
Another great show guys
Cheers Benny!
The first necron monolith was a beast
I have a colour scheme that requires my shades to cover the whole mini and make it just the right kinda dirty…. The new shades don’t do this and it annoys me a lot
On the 3d printing thing. 3 words as a Tau player. Cyclic ion blasters. Why have the option of weapon load outs (and multiple ones at that) for weapons that aren’t in the box.
Honestly GW, they don’t help themselves!
That's Willrow Hood and the "Running of the Hoods" with regards to the dude in Empire with the Ice Cream maker. (Just in case no-one else has put it in the comments)
The blue-capped gorilla glue may not be available over there, but is really way less frustrating to use that regular super glue.
Definitely the best podcast for hams 😉❤️
😍😍😍 aww Fanks!!!
Someone buy Pat a mic stand for the love of god! 😆
There isn't a table in front of me to put on one that makes sense to sadly. Can we change it to "can someone buy pat a studio" 🤣
@@thepaintingphase get pat a boom arm
@@thepaintingphase Dangle it down from the ceiling!
The audio on the past few have been super weird and distorted? not sure why but it's the same on youtube and spotify, and on my phone as well.
I’ve also bought a HH Rhino.
@@thepaintingphase also totally fair! Deimos rhinos do look very cool.
I built (and still have) the old LR Crusader as a kid and agree with the bolters but it was a real achievement once it was done as a 12 year old. I’ve built a few FW models over the years but the hardest model I came across that taught me pinning etc was the og metal nightbringer
The microphone is growing a head with glasses and a red beard.
So cool. Lol
When Peachy put the sides of the Armoured vehicle on his head i had flashbacks of the “Rylans” from “The Last Star Fighter” 🤦♂️😂😂😂😂
Hahaha! I get that reference 😂👍
Good replacement for rackarth flesh is Vallejo silver grey 👌🏼 I went to great lengths to find that one 😂 to the edge of madness
I need that yellow tutorial to drop lol. I have lots of Imperial Fists ready to prime and need to know the best color to prime them with haha
Hahaha! Fear not it’s coming soon! 😍👍
we know they are 3d printing prototypes. you can see layer lines on studio painted models :) got to be blind to miss those lines on roboute guilliman armour :P
Games workshop model kits do not come with instructions. They come with vague suggestions on how you build it.
Great videos. This was another banger
Look up Mike’s Carpets for a great advert, he looked like someone had stuck Rod Stewart on a hot wash... he was actually’Mike’ the MD in the ad.
Best description of a person ever…..
Great work as always gents!
“They don’t like it up em!” ✅😂😂
I love the paint talk. Try some Pro Acryl white. It makes White Scar seem like stick deodorant.
😂🤣😂
His name is Jonathan Ferguson at the Royal Armouries.
