How Much Does It Cost To 3D Print A Death Korps of Krieg Army?

- Wow, I knew we could save money 3d printing but this is near unbelievable. I priced a 1000pt death korps of krieg army from games workshop and my jaw dropped at the price so I worked out how much it would cost to 3d print a dkok army for warhammer 40k and this is open and shut.

Hear me out; 3D Printing Krieg is lore-accurate due to how 98% of Kriegsmen are Vat-Grown Clones copied over and over and over again. Best way to get a Krieg Army and have it be lore friendly.
Makes sense to me 😂😂😂
Honestly the models that people make online for free are better than the ones GW are selling. Not even mentioning the paid stls from companies that care.
Is it now sealed that Krieg's are clones? I just remeber how people argued about it but couldnt be sure if they really were.
@@pilz4566 They are not, clones don't work in 40k because they don't have souls. GW retconned that and now it is implied that they are just created in a lab with natural genetic material and then vat grown to speed up the process. I don't think they ever said it clearly, but they are definitely not clones
@@pilz4566 In the newest Krieg book they confirmed at the end that they used these "vita wombs" which basically speeds up the growth process so they can churn out kids faster. No clones though just using genetic material from donors so a lot of siblings basically.
You are a hero. I've been hunting for exactly this as I'm starting to get into Warhammer after a long time of sitting on the fence. Krieg are all I've wanted, I already had the exact same printer, UV light, even resin bottles that you do. Also, it's 5 days since you posted this and the models we 30% off on Maker's Cult. Screaming good deal and amazing models. The only problem now is figuring out how many is too many...
Question you need it Paint or not?
@@darklink8423 Painting it is a good part of the fun.
Great stuff yet again bud :-) just watched it there on my lunch break :-P The best part and worst part about the mini hobby is wanting to try and make so many armies but the best part about printing is, it is something we can do without killing ourselves ha the only other problem is time and storage ha Makers Cult and Red Makers are the way to go for these bad boys :-) also the hoodie is keeping me warm at night in work wuw!!
Thanks brother! Glad the hoodie is keeping you warm 😁😁 storage is my big issue lol might end up having to give models away
@@battlebrothersam damn right hoodie and little heater on at night I am golden ga oh yeah I am not surprised at all the amount you have printed off is mad 🤣 but your painting skins have gotten 20 times better it's great to see.
Thanks for these videos man. They're a big inspiration. I even looked into 3d printing offshore at places like JLCPCB or PCBWAY but the $1 per item (shoulder pad, legs, arms etc all cost) so it adds up, then its $30 shipping to me so worked out one lowly space marine is gonna cost me $39 shipped. Buying a 3d printer and sucking up the startup costs is looking more and more attractive. Suffice to say I wouldn't have even considered that option without your videos. Cheers dude.
Awesome video.👍 i would like to see the spoken video about how many minis you can get out of one bottle for the dkok. Could you also make a video only about dkok tanks, that would be so awesome since im planing on getting myself an army and i really love the tanks
Thanks! I'll put it on my list
very well painted and great video
Thanks!
Prices really got insane espacially the ones of forgeworld. I dont say I dont want to pay for my minis but these prices are completely out of proportion.
I thought it would be a good saving but I didn't expect this, all these models should be plastic by now
@@battlebrothersam yes nobody understands why GW clings so much on FW. They made a Box of Krieg Infantry and left the rest at FW. They bring HH over to GW but make legion Upgrade sprues and characters FW. Its just utter nonsense paired with the prices
Wait, is it me or at min 3:22 the second post in Amazon says "-£-2-0-0- Now:£255.99"
I'll have to check it back when I'm on the computer lol
£280. Hard to see because of the line through it.
I don’t understand how GW charges so much it honestly just keeps more people from getting into war gaming
Maybe 3d printing will give them the much needed competition
GW's pricing is so insane, it's less expensive to print an army and BUY THE 3D PRINTER YOU'RE USING FOR IT than to buy it from them.
Dont forget they arbitrally jack up prices depending on where you live also
Exactly. It's why they are so aggressive in fighting 3D creators because they know how badly they are price-gouging and how uncompetitive they are.

i would release 3D files if i was games work shop, with a app that is licensed, pay 9.99 a month to use it and would have tons of money incoming
It’s probably cheaper to hire students to LARP as your army and your opponents. You will need a much bigger board though.
I printed my 80 krieg for less than $40. It's crazy how affordable it becomes.
That's nuts when that would be $480 in plastic

Thanks brother
Can't recommend StationForge enough, their AdMech-like faction is brilliant
@@Marcusstratus I second this. They just released their first kit for a new line of SM proxies.
i fell in love with station forge. as soon as i get my 3D printer i will print a lot from them.
station forge, print minis and mrmodulorka. 30 best dollars ever month.
The "problem" with 3d printing is the constant urge to print new models and new armies. Thus, a 3d printer opens a new world to our hobby and makes you want to have them all! Personally, purchasing stls for future projects or armies ( for example because of black Friday proxy stormcast eternals and fyreslayers) made me want to take a break. It is a personal goal to finish painting all my previews miniatures before printing something new. So, no printing for the whole November in order to finish all my projects first and making some true cost savings.
I feel this is my soul. I now collect 10+ armies, usually subbed to 4+ patreons a month, have a 500gb+ hard drive of shame, and am running out of space for my minis.
Stay strong brother its true 3d printing has just made it like I'm a kid in a candy store and able to get whatever I want
@@battlebrothersam exactly that. Personally I need to keep in check my inner child now more than ever... Otherwise the printed miniatures will drown me...
Try priming everything you have so far. It will set you straight so fast after you run out of a rattle can in one session.....
@@Splatterpunk_OldNewYork can you believe that I actually did this and discovered a new pile of miniatures hidden in a drawer? What were the chances of that...
The good, old Valour Korps. Literally the first thing I ever printed. After six units of heavy artillery pieces were done, my entire Mono X setup had been paid for and I was in the black. Not having the time to print or play, this still gives me a cozy feeling... good days.
Hands down the best models to print supports are great models are great I want to print off more of the heavy artillery units now lol
@@battlebrothersam Though you have to admit, one thing that might rival the feeling of artillery is the cavalry. Not because of the models, but the feeling of dropping one on the ground... and simply shrugging because there is more ponies where that came from since they cost cents on the dollar in comparison to Forgeworld.
As a GW VP this is highly offensive. I will no longer be able to afford paying for my wife's boyfriends gym membership. Please stop.
😂😂😂 OK I guess I should stop
Honestly as an Australian I just picked up an FDM and SLA printer because each GW army of 2000 points will cost me easily that much, and now I can make 10 armies at a fraction of that, all themed how I like, with matching 3d printed thematic terrain. After getting back into the hobby I have to thank GW but I’m never looking back. Even Star Wars legion allows you to collect a whole faction for only $500 and I’m happy to pay that but GW is so broken here in Australia.
its insane, if they whould sell a foot soldier for just one dollar it whould be still value time for them.
Eventually as laws crack down on copyright issues, I imagine it'll become even harder to acquire certain printable files. It would certainly be handy for the community to say, store said files to share or resale should the need arise. Patreon and discord can sure come in handy in that regard.
Great thing is you can't exactly copyright French German ww1 soldiers 😁
This may or may not be done already en mass🥱
99 illegal files online...99 illegal files....take one down, pout around, 109 illegal files online...
That's why it doesn't hurt to have a physical external HDD to just store files on, even if you're not currently into 3D printing. That's how I managed to have some highly customizable Mk IV tactical marines before the file got taken down
@@helixmusic4279 Do you have these files posted somewhere? Asking for a friend

@@CruddyBroso once you get used to it is there a difference in quality from printing accurate to GW minis then getting the real thing?
@@terrydactyl2077 it's hard to get "accurate to gw" stl files but there's some absolutely amazing proxies out there that IMO can look better. Any 2k printer can technically print finer details than gw can injection mould and once you have a file you can print as many as you want. I've found tons of them still print in pieces so you can pose them in so many ways. Hope this helps 👍
@@CruddyBro thanks mate! All new info for me!
I love seeing The Makers Cult shouted out! Been a patron of theirs for years and years, and they're always amazing

You could buy 4 3d printing setups and still be cheaper lol
I would definitely like to see a video showing how many miniatures - or how many Points in-game - you can get from one bottle of resin. Just to put the cost of a bottle into perspective.
I have one for orks! I managed to get a good amount of them not sure about points though
Here's a list of what I was able to print with one bottle of resin: One Death Korps Marshal, one Leman Russ Demolisher, one 10-man Death Korps Grenadier Squad, two 10-man Death Korps Infantry squads, one SoB Canoness, one Celestine, three 10-sister Battle Sister squads, one Slaanesh Infernal Enrapturess, one Keep of Secrets, one Tzeentch Fluxmaster, and the weapons for a Lord of Change (body and wings were too big for my resin printer, so I had to print those on my Ender 3 Pro FDM printer).
So as you can see, one bottle of resin will go a really long way.

"How do they come up with those prices? "
They know people will pay it. Despite their constant price increases, their sales numbers never seem to suffer so that only encourages them to keep raising their prices.
The bootleg names of these custom models are fucking hillarious. I found what appears to be a apothecary called "Turk the Surgeon"
Yo no way it's turk the surgeon

Hi from Sydney
G'day :D your up late lol
Good morning from Melbourne 👍
I think I’ll just buy a resin printer. I have an FDM one that I use to print tanks, but for soldiers, I need resin. Thanks for the video!
2K printer? You can get an 8K these days for half the price of that order. Saturn 8K is $490 and Saturn 2 8K is $550.
You could buy the Saturn 2 8K, a wash & cure station, all the supplies you need, gallons of resin, and all the files you need, and still have hundreds less than what GW & FW would charge.
Your 100% right brother Richard! Always great to see you in the comments
It's not even about price. It's pure availability. FW doesn't ship models to my country but resin 3d printing is cheaply available. If I want to play 40k with these models there is no other choice. I can mass produce good quaint resin models in my own home, it's amazing.
Glad you have access to a printer brother 😁😁
GW seems to be working the hell out of their 2 (IIRC) factories and just can't keep up. Too many franchises and too many models to keep up.
Another excellent vid.
I have discovered an extremely friendly warhammer printing community here in Portland, and I have never played Warhammer 40k, think I'll start with this very army! Thanks for making this mate!
Portland Oregon or Portland Maine?
I'm in the middle of printing a Solar Aux army for Heresy. The official cost of my list would have run almost exactly £2.5k, but so far I'm up to £167 (£60 being the files) and while there's still a lot of models left to go, (including a pair of Baneblade variants) all told I reckon it'll still come in at a saving of about 90%.
One thing I will caution is that Chitubox's resin use estimate is usually waaay off - typically by at least 20%, so I always weigh my models when they come off the print bed to get a more accurate gauge of how much liquid (and cash!) I'm burning through.
Ah I didn't know that about the estimate being off! But jesus that's some savings you have already
I know this is an older video but what do you recommend for ventilation?
you think australian is outragous, try New Zealand dollars, its $500 for the standing men
At that point is it not cheaper to just fly to warhammer World and pick everything up! That's ridiculous
It's a hobby, expensive yes but a hobby and It wouldn't feel right to 3D print them in mass. Buy one set, paint it, repeat in a few months. Plus you get books in the sets no?
You get books in the starter sets and such.
Buying a regular old kit of say infantry, you're lucky if you get a single sheet of paper on how to put those together.

I couldn't believe it was cheaper to purchase the printer and resin, plus all the STL's than to buy Krieg models direct from GW/ForgeWorld, that's just insane.
GW would be really smart if they read where things are going & instead started selling official model packs that were printable
Hell, include a download link when you buy the $60 box so you get your plastic & reprintables.
3d printing is like the internet, you can't put a cap back on once it's spilling out. Might as well make some money
Hi Sam. I'm from Australia, and i am well aware of how ludicrous the GW pricing is. $304 AUD for a Knight Dominus!!
I'll definitely be considering 3D printing now. Despite the learning curve, it is looking more and more like the cheaper option.
If your in Australia then your going to see huge savings!
You are quickly convincing me to purchase a 3D printer. Can you suggest the best 3D printer for 40K-type models under $1,000???
Saturn 2 hands down! All of these were done on a 2k Mars 2 Pro so a 8k will make them shine
@@battlebrothersam Excellent - Thank you. $550 on sale now!

It's not guardsmen, but he did a video on that: ruclips.net/video/5X4knxdSqrI/видео.html
So I've done math on some stuff like this and so far I've printed a box and half of combat patrol for only 30 resin bottle 1000ml with that being said I also pay 10 a month for a subscription as well for my army but I can't wait till I get bigger printer so I can print this warlord titan i have

That's the reason why GW and other IP holders was going so hard against 3d print sharing sites. It cuts them out.
If everyone did the same will GW be out business?
I have been a Patreon of Makers Cult especially for their VC models for nearly two years. But I cannot find those backpacks!! I have checked all my STL files and their back catalogue, please, please, someone tell me where I can get them. Their new Universal Guard are very exciting too.
On their discord in the patreon only channel
I mean, if GW is going to charge $571 for a set of miniature models, yeah, they have zero reason to complain about 3D printing. Lower your prices, and people will buy them instead of printing their own. They are their own worst enemy.
To think I almost didn't include it until I double checked the price lol
Noone wants to hear they spent too much money for too little plastic. But If a premium is charged, a premium service must be delivered. Having purchased GW resin models myself, one can hardly justify paying months worth of groceries for barely solid world war figurines.
Your 100% right brother

They're well earned 👍
My sources for krieg models is RedMaker on myminifactory, great stuff, printed his kill team models they look amazing
They are good models I like the formal look of the VK
I wonder if you could do the same thing with the new Cadia rising kit?
That's a good idea
As an outsider to 40k this seems hefty. But since i am a Carpenter and see all this DIY stuff out there with people saying: "duh just make it yourself, its way cheaper for that you just buy matierials!" First of all: thats very wrong more often than not , since shops get discounts since they buy from the source directly. And secound: you are mostly paying for hte expertise and the Time put into the projects.
For what i saw just now: It looks like the Models you buy are already finished and painted pieces (might be wrong here, since i never bought Models). and given how intricate they are it makes sense to me that they are priced that way, since i imagine it would take a damn long time to do so.
Still, i would rather print and paint them myself, but not to nessesarly save money, but for the fun of doing so.
Nice VId tho. Gave me a good look into what i would need to start and that its way less expensiv than i thought :D
I work at a games store, and while it is true that the store buys them for less, we are contractually obligated to sell them at MSRP; anyone who undersells GW product is kicked out of the distribution network.
TLDR: technically yes? But in reality no.

i had someone tell me " I don't like 3d printed models because it has less detail" and i told him "! your model painting isn't good enough to worry about the detail, do you even two thin coats" and their work looks like they dipped the models into a paint bucket
This honestly goes to show that, if you’re self sufficient and know what to do, your wallet will always thank you 😂 I don’t do warhammer or anything, but have always been so dumbfounded how detailed and cool they look when I’m at my local game store, I used to be into Airsoft n such, and 3D printing was VITAL for some thing that you couldn’t even buy, like I had an Airsoft barrett that, if I wanted it to fire bbs harder, I needed to buy their own proprietary over priced springs that weren’t known to be of any quality, so I 3D printed my own spring guider so I could use super high end springs!
Hey! Love your videos :) The big thing putting me off of getting into 3D printing is the layer lines. Do they not bother you at all? They drive me crazy! I assume you print at 0.05mm, do you ever think about lowering the layer height? Would that even help to get rid of the lines? Great video anyway :D
Thanks! Nope not at all I'm happy enough with the balance of speed vs quality on 0.05mm
@@battlebrothersamI see! You'd rather have them print in half the time at the cost of being able to see small lines? So Korps is pronounced the same was the US Marines do as in "Core".

As much as this is a great idea (and I'm already printing my own Krieg army) the unfortunate part is that you can only really use these with your own friend group. Official stores (at least the ones I've been to) get rather judgy if you even proxy a head on a guard model in a game. Local game shops probably wouldn't care AS much but I've never seen any proxies at a local Warhammer night at my shop.
Yeah it's a downside but the pros outweigh the cons for me
but how would they even be able to tell the difference between 3d printed of modelled ones if they are painted up? I mean you could have made a couple of heads with greenstuff easily.

It really depends on where you are and what your gaming community is like. In the UK, you absolutely wouldn't be able to get away with this. But in America, you're only going to get stopped if it's a GW store or tournament. Other gaming stores or tournaments don't care.
I think, especially outside the UK, people massively overstate how much of a problem the non-GW models issue is. If I had to guess, it's because on some level people want to justify having spent hundreds of dollars on plastic/metal/resin, and thus need to hold the "official" models up as being more "legitimate" or "virtuous". And make big assumptions as to how big a deal it would/should be.
Here in Canada, my local game shop people don't really care because they understand that not everyone may not be able to afford some of the options available, the usually accepted rule at most stores I've been to is that you should field at least 1 official model per 9 printed models and that if your paint job is acceptable, then go for it. It of course depends on your location and the people you play with.
Stationforge.... Your welcome. 50 shades of krieg and everything themed krieg...

I've been toying with the idea to get a 3d printer but never had a proper reason to justify it. This video actually helped a lot especially since a friend of mine like you and I agree, like and think Kriegs are some of the coolest minis out there
Guess you are printing with 0.05 layer hight when im looking at the layer lines...
Certainly am
I use 0.030. No lines on my stuff
just curious, what is the site you are on?
Cgtrader
I'm just glad someone is sticking it to GW & FW
I did the Math on it earlier today. I invested $400 for my Anycube Photon Mono 2, a cleaning station, resin, gloves, alcohol, and found a free repository of over 200 gigs of 40k models. For the 500 grams of resin I have, Ive figured I can print out about 230 T'au Droids. Which, if I were to buy them at their cheapest I can find, would come to almost $500. If I print three Titans, my setup has already paid for itself.
The thing is even casting resin is cheap.
A forgeworld warlord titan couldn't cost more than $50-$60 in materials.
Honestly id do a mixture the command squads don't seem to bad when compared to there cadian equivalents and I don't think the commissars are that bad when you consider how much they charge for the individual plastics. However I draw the line at paying 500 pound for horses or artillery pieces.
Wow what a gorgeous STL. You found a very skilled artist. I'm doing my knights and admech FULLY printed because really... EFF GW for daring to price less than a pound of plastic or resin at over 1000 dollars. Fortunately I have a pretty badass setup with a max m3 and a wash and cure max cleaner, so kicking out a badass army costs less than a 10th what it would if I wanted to support the company that's ruining Warhammer one annoying cashgrab and one poorly balanced fun reduced edition at a time
Sure English is tough,, Death Crops of Krieg, is not pronounced Corpse, but Core. Just like the USMC, United States Marine Corps (core).
So you could buy a 3D printer, and a cheap or 2nd hand PC, plus the software. You could buy all the materials, and possibly print multiple 1000 point armies, for less than if you bought the Krieg army, directly from Games Workshop?
If GW have any sense, what-so-ever (which I doubt) in their money-grabbing management, they will move to licencing their models to 3d printers instead of charging extortionate prices to their customers. They won't though, they'll choose to go bankrupt instead. So long, GW... you deserve what you get.
My buddy is 3d printing me a bunch of DKoK stuff in exchange for supplying the files myself and painting some of his D&D stuff. Just picked up my first batch. I asked for 60 total. He gave me 90 because he didn't want to waste plate space for each printing 😂
I recently looked into playing 40k but couldn't get into it because of the price tag. The army i wanted to play (2000 points of pure guard infantry) costs over $1500 when bought from GW themselves, but I can buy a top of the line printer and make MORE models myself than what I would have gotten at GW for only a third of the price... I think I know which route I'm going down instead
If GW was making models out of metal or something. Heck, have a process that makes the models have INSANE quality that are next to impossible to replicate at home with an amateur 3D printer. Then, MAYBE they could justify their pricing. Yet, they can't. With now in recent days (year after this video was made) in some parts of the world. They want to pass laws preventing people from buying 3D printers. Well, highly restricting them, that is. Which just means that the corpos will just gain more power and control over everything.
I mean, starting from scratch, new in the whole thing, spending 300 bucks on just the printer and supplies. Is a lot better than spending 1000 bucks on the models and that isn't including the painting. Now after that 300 bucks spent. You have 700 bucks of wiggle room to mess up, having to buy more product and then the paints required to paint all the models. In all honesty. Far better value.
What i always wonder...GW knows pwople can 3d print right? Why are 5 Riders 140 Dollars this is insane in the quantity GW Produce this. They could say : ok every Modell there 10 Dollar and they whould make a fortune. They could say every soldier 1 Dollar and still whould make Value.
So I've been in the hobby since 4th edition, most of my Eldar and Ork elite units are still metal minis.
Personally, GW is killing their brand and customer base, have been for years.
They're squeezing their loyal customers for pennies, and short term their profits will soar.
But we've seen recent examples of Wizards of the Coast, and then Unity, trying to squeeze long time customers for royalites and more profits.
Both of those cases, they went from 0 to 100, so there was understandably more backlash. But GWs fans are more of the frog in boiling water. GW will continue to heat the water slowly, until they kill us all off.
Ironically, if they were more forgiving of 3rd party models, they'd probably end up attracting more people to the hobby.
Then you sell those people bundled kits, paint, rulebooks, dice sets, etc.
But by making the initial price of entry astronomically high, they've essentially locked new players out in many cases.
When I started, over 15 years ago, I was able to build and paint three entire armies of 2,000pts, from my minimum wage earnings from my Summer job.
Now, even as an adult working full time, I can't justify the costs. So that's why when my brothers and I decided to get into Kill Team, first thing I did was order a 3d printer.
Where can I get the backpacks @battlebrothersam?!?! your prints look amazinggg. building my army as we speak :)
