Making the BLAST SHIELD from MYTHBUSTERS!!

  • I've needed this shield to keep me safe from my dangerous projects! I wanted to be a Mythbuster growing up. Since that show doesn't exist anymore, I'm taking all of my favorite elements from that show and merging them into this channel: learning new things, solving problems with my hands, science, engineering, danger and all the ridiculousness that went with that show.

Hello Tyler, My name is Allen Craft and I can tell you precisely what that blast shield is made of as the company I worked for is responsible for creating it.
Those are 1 inch thick LEXAN panels mounted in an Aluminum frame that were created at the NOCTURNE Lighting & Video shop for the stage for JOURNEY for their 1983 tour "FRONTIERS."
Those particular panels were the top of the drum riser that Steve Smith's kit sat on. The rest of that stage was eventually sold off as scrap AL.
I was part of the shop crew at the time of construction and was personally there as Neal's Studio Engineer / Manager when Adam and Jaime came to the "Garage / Warehouse Sale" Neal Schon was having to clear out old unused bits of stage and sets. That was 1994.
I didn't know who they were at the time, but recognized them immediately when their show came on the air. How you gonna forget those 2 characters? Then when I saw the panels being used as a shield it all made sense.
NOCTURNE was JOURNEY's Stage and Lighting company that also designed and built stages and lighting rigs for other bands throughout the 80's and 90's.

I would strongly recommend testing a frame to destruction before using it for projects.
Not just because testing things to destruction could make a good video that would temporarily satisfy my internalised boundless rage, but so you can have a very concrete idea of when it just isnt safe enough. (Even for smaller projects.)

For very dangerous stuff it might even be better to angle the panels towards the thing that can project shrapnel towards you. It might even help if something heavy is about to push the panels from the frames by changing the angle the force is applied to those screws.
    Very cool project!

You made a really nice recreation of the first blast chamber Adam and Jamie used during the early days of Mythbusters. It too consisted of 1/4" polycarbonate, with either a steel or aluminum frame. Not really sure which, I'm guessing steel. It should protect you pretty well.

I would turn it opposit way around. Because now if something hits it, all the emergy needs to be transfered to frame trough screws. Opposit way, entire edge would be supported by frame itself, therefore it would take much more force to break it.

I did the rear window of my Volvo wagon with polycarbonate, 4mm, to match the glass the vandals smashed that used to be in there. I can punch it as hard as I can, and even though it's only glued in with silicone and the tailgate is aluminium and not overly strong, it just booms like a drum and bounces right back :-) No major scratches, yet, and rain beads on it like it's a brand new car :-D

6mm is kind of too thin. Add an angle or c channel to support the middle. Ideally also tripling the thickness of the centre panel. Alternative is rotating the structure so incoming fragments are making a glancing blow, ~45° than hitting flatly.
