EP 55 - 8100 CPM Radioactive Fiestaware (Geiger Counter)

  • I've finally acquired a Geiger counter, and after a great deal of searching around the house, I located a substantially radioactive piece of antique Fiestaware. Certain Fiestaware products from the 1940s-1950s utilized Uranium salts for the bright orange and red colored glazes, and as such are strong alpha and gamma emitters.

    The overestimation, lack of any practical knowledge on ionizing radiation, and no idea on how geiger counters work stresses me out so fcking bad that the high blood pressure will kill me long before the strongest sources ever will.

      As someone who is a beginner in the field and just got their first Geiger counter (a GMC-300S), what are you referring to? I have very limited knowledge on this sorta stuff, and am just trying to expand my horizons

    Another interesting fact: normal geiger counters can't detect neutrons. There is a special kind of GM tube you can get that can detect neutrons, however..the inside of the tube is coated with a plastic moderator to slow the neutrons, and then the fill gas is replaced with something like boron triflouride (that can become neutron activated, which will then trigger the normal detection in the GM tube). These are pretty rare though, and I assume they are expensive, it's not the kind of thing you would find in a consumer geiger counter, and it's really something that's only in specialized instruments.

    My Mom finds the Geiger counter ticking annoying,after a while, i love the sound, my Geiger counter, I've used, but I'm seen as the enemy, over the word radiation, i try educate people,calmly,about it, I'm autistic.

    I do not know if someone has commented this already, but I have that same Geiger Counter, and I have discovered it is possible to detect Alpha particles if you unscrew the back of it.

      Very easy to find for cheap. Also, doesn’t have to be fiestaware. Anything bright orange at an antique store is worth checking with a Geiger counter.

    I own a GQ gmc-600 with a pancake type tube that detects alpha particles. How many CPM do you think your Fiestaware bowl would generate on that kind of Geiger counter?

      @@DielectricVideos my Geiger counter is a GMC 300 nuclear radiation, that detects Betta , gamma rays and x-rays.and cosmic rays.i discovered.

      I have a Radiascan 701a that can detect alpha...and these plates put out very little of it. U-238 is an alpha emitter, but its half life is so long (4.4 billion years) that very little alpha is actually being emitted. A piece of paper will completely stop alpha. I've done some tests on one of these plates...it is mostly soft/lower energy beta (which is blocked by aluminum foil), with a lesser amount of hard/higher energy beta (which can go through the foil), and a very tiny amount of gamma that is low enough to not really be worth considering. The problem with detecting alpha from this, even though U-238 does emit it, is the U-238 is sealed into the glazing, thus the alpha is mostly blocked and can't really escape to be detected, even by a counter that can measure it. You can see how much alpha there is by measuring it with and without a sheet of paper between the probe and the plate. I have noticed a VERY slight difference, maybe 5%, with a sheet of paper there, so there is some alpha, but it's not much, and that's also within the margin of error anyway. So this plate is almost all beta.

    I have a 1936 feistawear plate 7 inch and it registers at 8000 cpm so i should probably put it in something right

      As long as you maintain some distance between yourself and the plate, it's not really that dangerous. Uranium is more of an ingestion hazard than an external radiation hazard. But if you feel more comfortable about it, a thick-walled metallic container should attenuate most of the emitted radiation.

    These plates put out very little alpha. They are mostly hard (higher energy) and soft (lower energy) beta, with a very small amount of gamma. U-238 is an alpha emitter, so there is some alpha, but its half life is so long that the alpha is pretty negligeable compared to the beta. If it were alpha, it would be blocked by a sheet of paper. Also, the counter you have couldn't possibly detect alpha, because a geiger counter can only do that if it has a pancake probe with a thin mica window that the alpha particles can pass through (on yours the alpha particles wouldn't be able to penetrate the device casing, let alone the tube casing, so could not be detected). I have a counter that can detect all 3. Also, that thin piece of aluminum will not block all of the beta, it's not thick enough. What you're picking up with the foil there is the hard beta that is energetic enough to pass through the foil. The foil is only blocking the soft lower energy beta. These plates also put out very little gamma...the gamma is around 1 microsievert per hour at most, it's barely worth considering. The hard beta is around 8 microsieverts per hour. The soft beta is around 40 microsieverts per hour. And there is a small amount of alpha, but the amount is negligeable compared to the beta, and it's mostly absorbed by the glazing (so there's not really anything to detect).

      @@DielectricVideos Yeah...in reality it's not so black and white as they say in the textbooks. All types of radiation come in different energies depending on what they're being emitted from, and more energy takes more to block. Aluminum foil will definitely block the lower energy beta particles but the plate still puts out enough higher energy ones to detect even with the foil present. The metal pot completely blocks all beta. I know all about the types of radiation but I am still a novice when it comes to actually using a geiger counter, so this tripped me up too. I assumed "U-238 is an alpha emitter so this must be alpha...but wait why isn't paper blocking it". Then I did some more research and found these plates mostly emit beta, and the alpha they do emit is blocked by the glazing itself (alpha is ridiculously easy to stop).
