This video deserves more views than it has. keep playing with the title/thumbnail (I've seen you change it a few times) to see if you can get the right combo. I like the current thumbnail but I've seen our videos do better with more realistic images (a screenshot of the slow mo before and after like at 15:20 or maybe the camera angle at 15:15 ), but you know your audience better. Maybe making the title a question like "Can you really pull a car door off like they do in movies?" (that could be improved upon lol) would make for a more intriguing concept and gets the idea of what you're testing across. Don't do anything that goes against what you know works for your channel though. If the most recent changes you've made are showing promising results disregard this comment lol
You really need another set of flip out fins mounted on the stop ring that unfold when they leave the barrel, like an RPG round. That would make the surface of stop ring much larger, so you won't keep firing all the way through the door. It would also help stabilize it in the air... also EPIC vid man. The power of that air cannon is awesome
The doors on most vehicles are actually a critical part of the structure. If you remove the doors the overall strength of the passenger compartment gets seriously compromised. That's why you have a structural brace that runs from the hinge side to the latch, and you can see that is what stopped the harpoon at 7:51. Because the doors act like gussets and are what help keep the passenger compartment rigid in a crash/rollover, they are deceptively strong so long as they are closed and latched.
It makes sense: car doors are designed to protect the occupants from side impacts, including vehicular impacts. It would be extremely dangerous for the occupants if the door separated from the unibody. In fact, the door when latched becomes a structural component of the chassis assembly. The latch and hinges prevent the door from being pushed too far into the cabin during a side impact, and also prevent the frame from separating (the door opening from spreading) during other impacts.
@@haphazard1342 The structural support of the door is most notable in convertibles, especially soft tops. With most of the strength of the frame being a flat box, door fitment can become a significant factor in reducing frame flex in corners. (Only really noticeable if it's awful, though.)
I work in a vehicle assembly plant and you’d be surprised just how much thought and engineering is put behind the door’s points of contact with the rest of the vehicle. Luckily, I work on “door line” so I actually assembly the doors themselves. That bar that limits the door from opening too far (could also be called hyperextending) is called a “check link” and then you have your locking mechanism that interacts with the striker plater that’s bolted to the vehicle. A doors lock functions like a miniature Ferris wheel inside of the locks hollow housing. So instead of the lock being displaced by the striker plate and then going back into its original position (providing a restricting barrier that keeps the door from opening again) the lock actually has a second latch that just replaced the position of the initial one. Think of it as rotating into place. My assumption is that the original latch then goes into the housing and provides some sort of opposing force inside the houses where it latches into its own piece. Take all of this with a grain of salt (or many many grains) because I want taught any of this. I just learned it from assembly the doors. I don’t know what any of the lock housing looks like on the inside. I just now how it functions because we have to do a lock function check before the door is put onto the vehicle. There will probably be a large amount of typos, and idek if there’s a character limit to YT comments
Its not about being strong though. Did you watch the video? I really like that its actually all about finding the balance and how sensitive it is to get it to work in comparison to the movies where it just works 'out of the box'
Not so sure, I think it would have been more interesting to either see a video of fixing the car that appeared to be in perfect condition except for a computer or engine problem. Or that splicing rope with what looked like a purpose built needle, we used to splice large rope but we had to jury rig a threader and had to guide it through with a smaller rope which was threaded with a smaller needle made of wire.
13:29 him "caressing" the torn sheet metal, got me thinking: dude, you're gonna cut yourself. But he had already, according to that bloody rag in his hand XD
Tyler, you are such an extremely intelligent young guy. You have this presence that makes you seem a bit older than you are. And an attitude like someone from the south - really sweet! And your videos are some of my favorites on YT. I feel like your life is going to be really fun and interesting. You will have a blast! ☺️
I kept thinking - what if some kid was playing in the woods behind that first line of trees. Not to mention the way they are jerking that rope - him saying how it's safe because the pulley makes the rope pull away from them - not realizing that is completely untrue. The rope is stretching and if it breaks can act like a giant rubber band and whip all the way back to the bumper.
I’d recommend using fins that flip out, basically backwards versions of the harpoon hooks, kinda like a sabot tank round’s stabilization fins. They will also double to help stop the harpoon when it hits the door.
i love the determination on this, i fully expected the video to end with him saying “well i guess you can’t do that”, but in the end he got the door to rip off
14:36 great vid but please don't do that. One twist of either hand and the disc will bind and pull your left hand towards the disc. Keep both hands behind the grinder and even better would be to put the bolt in a vise or use locking pliers and secure the locking pliers clamped to something solid if you're in the field
Cut my thumb down to the bone with a router earlier this year trying to freehand putting smooth edges on a block of wood. Not a great day. Router bit grabbed the wood, threw it away from me and my thumb went straight to the bit. All of that just to plug a drain hole in my basement. lol
I'm just sitting here eating some pad Thai watching cool shenanigans then Destin comes out of nowhere "SNATCHBLOCK" 🤣 just about choked on my noodles lol. Also, "upgraded from 3/4 to 2 inch valve"... Holy crap 😅 Great video man! Always really well done and cool projects 👌🏼👌🏼
Instead of a dyneema rope, I'd recommend trying a braided steel cable. It should have significantly higher abrasion resistance and tensile strength, with a smaller cross-sectional area, so should be much less affected by the air evacuating the cannon.
The problem he's facing is the harpoon stop plate is not allowing any air past the harpoon, so the harpoon catches up to the rope inside the barrel. With steel cable as it's very soft compared to the harpoon, it would twist and bend around the harpoon and end up blocking it inside the barrel. The way to fix it is have the harpoon sticking out of the barrel.
Something that hit me at the end, when you pointed out that you need a long barrel, is the fact that you made it so your harpoon had to be contained within the barrel. If you add a shaft at the back of the harpoon, you can fit it to a smaller, shorter barrel. It would work like a rifle grenade. It might also affect the issue you were having with the rope getting tangled, although I suspect it won't eliminate it.
wait, there's other nerds who love watching movies for the stunts to judge them, i miss dvds cause all action movies had a behind the scenes bit, that was legit my favourite part about em, my dream job growing up was to be one of the people engineering these mad contraptions and stunts, your content is soo cool cause it's basically that, but more in detail, just found your channel and I'm glad i did
First vid ive seen you do, this is brilliant, your methods for the evolution of the dor wrecker were interesting to see and the reasons behind their failure were a huge nerd joy for me personally, it was deatructive and informative great stuff!
Standing position suggests that noones assuming the rope, kinetic or towing point on the 4 runner won't fail first, all of which iv seen. Or even worse, the chain or snatch block...
To get the rope to work, look at how they attach the fishing line to the arrow in bow fishing. Basically the line is attached to a slider that can slide the length of the arrow with a stop at the end
rope probably needs to be inside the barrel coiled up behind the projectile. Also, you could probably get a decent flip-open motion with the hooks using some strong magnets mounted at the base of the fins. Also I think the stretchy snatch strap is actually counter-productive for safety in this case - given the hook is the most likely thing to fail, and not the rope, I think you're mostly risking turning the hook into a helluva projectile with a massive slingshot yeeting it yonder.
Great stuff! Your channel really is under-rated (relatively low subscribe count for the high level of quality in your videos). But I guess that's what happens when you're not just pumping out content to hit the algorithm. Can't wait for the next installment!
Tyler, the issue you're facing with the rope inside the barrel is the rope has nothing pulling it out of the barrel, so it tangles and disrupts the smooth flow of the harpoon inside the barrel. Most harpoons combat this by having the harpoon sticking out of the barrel and attaching the rope to the end that sticks out. They also use a long loop along the shaft of the barrel so that the harpoon fires normally, and as it fully exits the barrel the loop ends and pulls the rope with it. Another solution is using a hook on your stop plate to catch the rope, or perhaps a large washer type construction that the harpoon claws fit through but the stop plate catches it as it passes. Ropes attached each side to balance pulling load as a central pull would be impossible on a device with a large hole in the middle!
I’m extremely impressed with the door latches and extremely underwhelmed with the actual doors. Remember people, if you’re ever being shot at, hide behind the front wheels. That puts the most metal between you and death. The whole engine block and wheels, suspension, and more.
When I watch his videos I keep forgetting he’s this relatively small RUclipsr and I forget because the amount of editing and effort he puts into his videos is better than some channels with millions of subscribers

However, I don’t need to point out that when the cameraman was behind you, you could see the reflection on the silver truck 😅 but I must say your facial expression has improved so much! ❤ keep bringing new sequences and can’t wait for your next big project, or small project, either way 🎉
I'm a locksmith and I actually rekeyed the SendCutSend location in Kentucky! Guys who work there are cool as hell! Definitely recommend using them for your fabrication needs!
Try 4-5 feet of wire rope attached to the harpoon, then dyneema rope the stiffness of wire rope might keep it from tangling up. Titanium is really expensive a cheaper option would be ar steel 400-500, although I don't know if cut send cut stocks ar.
One method that may work a bit better would to create a less conventional design for the harpoon, almost like the drywall anchors that have four petals that spread out when the bolt is tightened down. The small teeth could then be put on the outside of the hinged arms to allow it to expand inside an area like the fender rather than requiring it to find room and a surface to extend the arms on this original design. Just a thought from a crazy engineering student :)
Wow - this was so much fun to watch, it must have been epic to do this in person. I loved seeing it punch clean through. I second other comments saying to try this with a steel cable. I really want to see what happens with a cable/rope attached. Perhaps a combination, cable to exit the barrel, then a rope behind that? Or, you may need to have some tension on the rope/cable before firing to keep it out of the way of the harpoon. Also, that target car looked to be in pretty good shape - but seeing you tow it into place makes me think the engine/transmission or both are dead.
11:35 Since it is a harpoon intended to penetrate, you could have a design similar to a Shwacker broadhead that contains the arms behind the penetrating point, then rotated them in place and locks them out
I really think you should stand at a safer distance. While the force of the door and stuff was going in the woods, a snapping cable or something would swing right back at you. Be safe! Great test!
Thread the rope through a piece of metal tubing (cut to the length of the barrel and flared out and smoothed on both ends). Hopefully that will keep the rope from entangling with the harpoon, and upon leaving the barrel flip back with the rope to a trailing position. The lighter mass of the tubing the less the disruption of the harpoons flight... possibly aluminum, or titanium if you've got the money. Either that or maybe a steel cable leader long enough to keep the rope out of the barrel altogether.
It's amazing how cars held together with panel bond pass crash test safety. Modern engineering pretty neat, even if being as cheap as possible is the outcome
Honestly just shows how safe modern cars are. The door can be bent to the point of being unrecognisable and yet the latch and hinge still hold up, and the car keeps its shape.
Could the arms harpoon be designed so that they could extend out, starting from a shorter length which might not get hung up and extending out all three arms. Once arms open each could extend out with springs to reach their full potential.
The bottle they're using in Fate of the Furious is dressed up as a NOS (Nitrous Oxide Systems) nitrous oxide bottle. If they are using nitrous rather than compressed air, those bottles are typically filled to 900-1000 psi, so it could actually be enough juice to send that harpoon through a car door!
You were in the 'death zone' a few times making this video, if that hitch/tow rope snapped after the pully, or pully sling broke off the tree,, it's good night Charlie!
A mechanism to capture the rope out of the cannon: A washer cap with eyelet that is attached to the end of the barrel. The harpoon passes through and grabs the washer/cap which pulls the rope.
As a former firefighter. The door bolts are basically indestructible. They are ment to keep the door closed. There is a reason the "jaws of life" are hydraulic. Not much is going to open it else wise
You could make the shaft of the bolt a rack and where the anchors connect to the shaft, a pinion. So when the bolt is pulled back the anchors mechanically expand.
You can try to put three different arms at the opposite end of the harpoon and make the front end of the Harpoon larger and spread out more when it opens up
I want to see someone wrap a cable around something, tie one end to a tree and on the other side tie to something to pull it. The cable straightening through whatever it is wrapped around should be pretty cool to watch.
i shall use send cut send for my new project, oh wait im the wrong person bcuz my next project is finding another one the these amazing videos to watch.

Honestly just shows how safe modern cars are. The door can be bent to the point of being unrecognisable and yet the latch and hinge still hold up, and the car keeps its shape.
I got really hooked on your video

Noooo
You harpooned it!😂
Finally a Tyler Bell video! Great work! Love it!
loved the flow of the video and the energy! you should try to disable a running car with this harpoon
Thanks! It didn't make it in the video but I shot one through the grill at full powered and it stopped at the engine block, of course.
Could the arms harpoon be designed so that they could extend out, starting from a shorter length which might not get hung up and extending out all three arms. Once arms open each could extend out with springs to reach their full potential.
You will be the new Mark Rober just give it a year or two!
The bottle they're using in Fate of the Furious is dressed up as a NOS (Nitrous Oxide Systems) nitrous oxide bottle. If they are using nitrous rather than compressed air, those bottles are typically filled to 900-1000 psi, so it could actually be enough juice to send that harpoon through a car door!
always excited for an upload
You guys are doing the lord’s work, and by the lord, I mean Adam Savage
You were in the 'death zone' a few times making this video, if that hitch/tow rope snapped after the pully, or pully sling broke off the tree,, it's good night Charlie!
Good to see you weren’t just looping the rope over a trailer ball. I’ve seen videos where those things snap off and turn into a 2” cannonball
Subbed and notified! Was pretty much glued to the screen throughout 🙌 more car-nage please 😁
2:10 "I needed more barrel lenght"
Me too buddy, me too 🥲
i shall use send cut send for my new project, oh wait im the wrong person bcuz my next project is finding another one the these amazing videos to watch.
