    "Should take a couple of hours" what he means by that is every 1 hour of working on cars translates into 3 normal hours

    Chrysler calls this 1/2 tooth timing. The exh Mark overlapping the intake mark. These are semi interference engines. Id be careful letting that cam snap like that I also wouldnt get in the habit of rolling an engine backwards. Alot of tensioners will loose there tenion and allow the cams to roll out of place allowing the valves to contact the pistons.

      I have to be honest. I had not idea what I was doing on this job ;) Thankfully it was a friends car which ran perfect after this job until it was in a front end collision :(
      Thank you for the input, and I will do my best not to spin engines backwards from here on out. :)

    I'm so glad you made this video....I have documentation on how to do this, but this video makes it even better...Kudos. What mileage did you guys change the belt out if you can remember, I have a 2004. Also is there anything you can buy to lock the CAMs? And how did you go about lining them back up before putting the new belt on?

    • @ThomasMiata
      @ThomasMiata  7 лет назад

      Murph around 150k miles. And you don't need to lock the cams, they will kinda hold themselves.

    • @Armurp01
      @Armurp01 7 лет назад

      Thomas Miata so before putting the new belt on did you line them back up?

    • @ThomasMiata
      @ThomasMiata  7 лет назад

      Murph yes, line up your marks. Then slide belt on

    • @Armurp01
      @Armurp01 7 лет назад

      Ok so moving each cam manually with a wrench or hand won't hurt....as long as it's clockwise? Sorry for all the questions....but will be my first time as well.

    • @ThomasMiata
      @ThomasMiata  7 лет назад

      Murph non interference motor.. can turn by hand and don't need a jig

    Why didn’t you record installing the belt or did I miss the part? It’s tricky and I think future viewers would love it.

      Sorry, wasn't as good at filming back then. Hint: this is the same engine (without a turbo) that dodge installed in some other vehicles like mini vans. There are pretty good videos of those out there ;)

      That is setting the idler spring tension. You lock it in so the spring tab rests in the grove.

  • @killertiller72
    @killertiller72 6 лет назад

    Hey man got a question for you, do you have to remove the pulley to get the bracket off, that’s all I need to do and I was curious if I could do it without removing the pulley

    • @ThomasMiata
      @ThomasMiata  6 лет назад +1

      Isaiah Tiller I took the pulley off to get the timing cover off. I can't remember if it was for the bracket as well.. sorry, it's been a while

  • @manuelguerrero2020

    I took my timing belt before adjusting it to the marks is that a problem?

    • @ThomasMiata
      @ThomasMiata  3 года назад +1

      To my knowledge the 2.4L, are non interference engines, so when the valves are open and the piston was at Top Dead Center the valves and piston would not come into contact. You should be fine 👍

    • @manuelguerrero2020
      @manuelguerrero2020 3 года назад

      Sweet! So that being said I can turn the gears counter clockwise? Or should I just turn them clockwise until my Marks match up?

    • @ThomasMiata
      @ThomasMiata  3 года назад +1

      @@manuelguerrero2020 it’s supposed to be better to only go clockwise.. but I doubt it would actually matter since it’s non interference.

    • @ThomasMiata
      @ThomasMiata  7 лет назад +1

      Frank Valencia sorry, I don't.. I just put everything back together to the same feel tightness. And the crank bolt was hammered on with a serious impact.

    Can you use a tool to hold the cam gears in place so the cam doesn't jump when you remove the belt?

    • @ThomasMiata
      @ThomasMiata  6 лет назад +1

      njshift I'm sure you could, but I did not.. when you set them they kinda want to stay put unless you twist to much... if you have the tool, use it, but don't spend money on it if u don't

    When jacking up the engine do I need to worry about the transmission mount? Will the frame mess up

    • @ThomasMiata
      @ThomasMiata  3 года назад +1

      I left it alone and jacked the motor up enough to get access. I bet you could take it off if your worried about it, but I didn’t need to.

    • @johnnyguerrero4724
      @johnnyguerrero4724 3 года назад +1

      @@ThomasMiata I probably won’t worry about it then because I searched in the forums too and I didn’t see anyone mention the tranny so I think you’re right haha!

    How do u get your marks to line up? Do u just keep turning the harmonic balancer until your marks line up?

    • @ThomasMiata
      @ThomasMiata  5 лет назад +1

      Try using two wrenches on the cam bolts with a pair of vice grips to keep them locked together. That might help... But i think I did this by just lining them up and being very careful not to go to far on either cam.

    did you just go counter clockwise? isnt that bad.

    • @ThomasMiata
      @ThomasMiata  6 лет назад

      I don't believe going backwards is an issue.. technically it might be, but this engine is still alive and kicking just fine. It's a non interference engine.. so no matter what you do, the valves wont hit the pistons.
