Your no parts changer like most are that call themselves mechanics. You my friend are a master mechanic fabricator welder engine builder tuner specialist and just awesome.😊
Good job! To get perfect TDC is pretty difficult to get without a dial gauge but you can get pretty close by using a stop in cylinder #1 and splitting the arc.....sort of a po'boy(or girl) solution. That said, advancing or retarding a cam can make a big difference in the power and torque of the engine. My oldest daughter loves working on our dirt bikes, cars, lawnmower, etc. Wouldn't know what to do without her. Tom P.S. That is a really sweet set of cam gears! I went thru this with my Cosworth Vega years ago and I would have liked a set of gears like that.
I advanced my gears intake and standard on exhaust I got lots of hills need more torque than speed works ammazing only thing is that my engen mounts like to loosen up quite a bit good thing I know where to tourkeys them back
That's great advice. I remember having to do filing and shimming in lieu of such impressive adjustable cam sprockets back in the old days. Also, while Snap-On is not generally the best value, and I confess that I do love their traditional ratchets, the torque wrench as far as I know is unbeatable for accuracy and repeatability. Nice.
We never set TDC with a dial indicator as there is some variable. We just used an old sparkplug with a small extended pin welded to the end. Rotate one direction till engine stops and mark degree wheel. Rotate back till it stops and mark degree wheel. What lies between those two marks is true TDC.Back in 1981 we built an adjustable cam gear on a small block Chevy running at Talladega. We used a Cloydes gear taper cut on the back side to fit into a machined cam plate. We had a discussion on how to fasten it. Our machinist said a tapered machine bolt had more holding power than anything else. He produced some female tapered washers and the tapered screws fit tight into them. Rather simple and it indeed had superior strength over anything else. We split the cover in two to facilitate adjustment. Keep in mind there was no adjustable valve train gear available. Well we set the gear up advanced and ran it. Then I retarded it and ran again. Unfortunately no gain was achieve, but the system did work. We ran 197 mph in a ARCA car, 2 mph faster than a Winston cup car.
Yes, if you follow the link that I included in the video, you will see the piston stopper that I used to mark my TDC on the crankshaft! I had the actual tool, but a modified spark plug sounds so creative!!! And I love the idea of splitting the cover in 2 for adjustment! Bummer that you didn't notice a difference!!
Hello Faye thanks for all the information on checking and adjusting your cams. I don't know if I could stay as calm as you did when checking the cams. Wishing you well Take Care
Great video, Faye. I went through the same exercise when I put a high performance cam in my Nissan pickup NAAP Z engine. It's not easy, but worth the effort. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to seeing the end result.

The 22re was great untill i spun a rod bearing after an oil pump failure.
Oooh it'll be a great engine for the trails, as it's super torquey!! I'd definitely recommend the oil pump modifications I show here, especially modifying the pickup, so you don't run dry when you're at a crazy angle!
@FayeHadley awesome thank you! i will look at how you did that. That 22re got me home on 3 cyl but it was not happy about it 😪. Those 5 Allen head screws that hold the each cam in place must be made out of some really good type of metal. Doesn't seem like much to be holding a cam in place under all that pressure. I'm sure the manufacturer must have done a lot of testing on that though.

Doing work like this is so much easier with the engine out! When we do this on our PT Cruisers, the whole front of the car comes apart, right down to the radiator and wheels.
