- In this video, I give you an update on my precious Supra, and show y'all why she has been constantly breaking down and not producing the power I had expected of her after an engine rebuild.
Huge thanks to Danny Soliz of Hill Country Performance for allowing me to film him and feature him in this video! Check out his Instagram here to see the other cool stuff he is building: / dansoliz

I am an engine machinist and I can tell this guy is immensely knowledgeable and honest. I work for a cranky old guy like that and I try to learn everything I can
cranky old guys are the best. They are usually cranky from a lifetime of giving knowledge and then the people going and taking shortcuts.
@Johnny Wishbone blueprint certs?
@@jeffjamison8614 so true haha
The machinist sounds like he knows his metallurgy. Straightening head in an oven...seems like a lot of it is much an art form from experience as it is science
That machinist is a real character! Outside the box thinking about how parallel planes are equally affected with warpage and the way he explains it was phenomenal to hear. And then his explanation about how he would proceed to correct it. (Retired A.S.E. Master Auto & Truck Technician and working small shop owner.)
One of few that knows his work... I've been at this 50+ years and he is one of 3 I know that is spot on
He is freaking incredible, and almost nobody knows about him. Many know about some cars and trucks with his engines in them, but that's about it. I am so grateful that I found him!!
@@FayeHadley women you have my respect I LOVE YOU😉
What a awesome mechanic / machine shop! Hopefully our up and coming mechanics can learn from Danny! Great share Faye!
This was a great lesson in root cause analysis. Thank you for taking the time to examine the engine carefully and recognizing the gauling as a symptom rather than the cause. Your machinist was spot on amazing descrition of the root cause and fix procedure.
Machine shop guy is legit!
guy behing the machine shop guy has seen things
This is very interesting. I have heard people go on about putting a thicker copper head gasket without flattening the head and torqueing it so it flattens out enough. Now I understand what they are talking about, the top of the head gets affected when one surfaces the bottom and more damage results. It's a full head job or nothing.
EXACTLY
So HARD to find even a decent Machine Shop. Glad you found one 👍🏻
You've got a good machinist, keep him for life. And we got a little chicken 😋
Love keeping old Supras alive. Very interesting head info
Wow that’s a honest rebuilder there. Most ppl will just take for a ride and rip u off , he said some good info on rebuilding a engine that I never knew
Love this video!!! I always have to know why something failed rather than just throwing parts back on it!!!
Valuable lesson for me about a straight head. Thanks Faye - much appreciated. I have never heard any shop talk about straightening a head.
Thank you!! Yes, me neither and it cost me years on this project 😭
I was a cylinder head machinist for 15 years and this man is correct. Nearly every aluminium OHC head that's seen huge heat or compression issues will need straightening before anything else. Not all mind you, but most. We never line bored the cam tunnel however, we only ever honed them so that we didn't take out too much material. Straightening the head involved heating the head up on a press with a jig and then locking it into place by melting certain points along the cylinder head. When you go to surface the face after this it would blow you're mind just how badly these chunks of metal could warp.
We constantly checked that the cam/s turned with all caps on during the entire overhaul process, as well as checking that the bucket bores (if used) were also round (straightening the head also threw these bores out of round too which could lead to jammed tappets and open valves, simple honing fixed this too)Then you may have the issue of the head being too thin from multiple shaves which can lead to timing belt/chain failures and valve to piston clearances.
After pressure testing the waterways, fixing up the guides, seats and final surface the entire head would be assembled and cams checked again to make sure everything was free and smooth.
The only other problem we use to have with alloy heads was softness. Too much heat into an alloy head and it would never torque down properly because the head bolts/nuts would literally sink into the aluminium while tightening. Hardness testers were used after straightening and if it was too soft it was thrown into the scrap heap.
Kind of miss this work when I watch videos like this.
you nailed it and the only thing left would be she's on an original 7M so the scarcity of a fresh head after 30-35 years can be hard to come by depending where you are. Literally sink into the metal you can't unsoften aluminum it's so true and devastating when you find out
@@TerrenceLP Oh yes, I'd probably have to source one from Japan nowadays, they've become quite a rare bird where I am now.
if you heat this head enough to "straighten" it, its going to lose all temper and be a soft piece of dog shit. but this car is tragedy in motion anyways. so meh.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Because you left this comment, Danny is going to allow me to film the head straightening process. Stay tuned for part 3 and see if it looks familiar ;) Sounds like you worked at a good shop!!!
@@FayeHadley Excellent! Great to see specialists at work.
That fellow has a Golden Foundation under his Skills Set. 👍👍👍👍👍
I'm over 50.... NEVER heard 'straighten the head' ever. Wow. Great video.
I am so happy that Danny can fix the head. There are so many machine shops that just let the machine do the work without actually looking to see what caused the original issue. Most of the good small shops have closed. I'll need an align bore done to my VW in a couple of years and I have know idea where to get this done. It is sad to see all of the knowledge vanish. This is one of the major reasons I love your channel. You take the time to explain and do the work. Filming Danny was EPIC! Thank you! Have a Supra Day! (Pun intended) - Jim
Glad you enjoyed!! I will have more Danny in the future for sure!
Thanks Faye....I did my head too....way worth it....mine no headache till now. 4 years already... 1994 model....so smooth....paid 2k to rebuild cylinder head...water leak resealed, valves replaced, springs replaced, valve seat replaced. Washed coolant stains...
It's great to see someone who REALLY knows their craft.
YES!!! I agree!
Just watched this all the way through simply because of the way you explain thing's with your passion for this motor, and how any good mechanic should always check the manual to make sure it's all being done correct. Like another of your follower's, a Jeff Keryk said, this was the most fascinating video he has watched! I totally agree with him, as even though i know only so much about the workings of an engine, what you said at the beginning about needing to know what the smoking gun is, and how Danny Soliz explained what most people do, and what he know's should be done, captured my attention and made so much sense to me. Brilliant video, love the passion and the laughter. Looking forward to the follow up.
Oh thank you so much !!! I can't wait to post an update :) don't worry - there is more to come, I won't leave y'all hanging!
Danny!!!! Cheers man. That was great. Thanks. Thanks for bringing Danny to us, Faye.
This is the most fascinating video I have ever seen. Wow! Thanks Faye.
Oh my gosh, I am so glad to hear that, thank you!!!
when you find these kind of guys, you hope they never get old. You want them working on your car forever. I have found the best, most honest mechanic, but he's no spring chicken. Often times, he'll tell me what/how I need to do something myself so I can save money and knows I can do it correctly. He's a keeper.
First I've ever heard of head straightening. Thank you!
Me too! And man, I used to work at an automotive machine shop over a decade ago as my first job in automotive! Who would've known?!!
That guy is a character, definitely knows his trade/craft. Most performance and engine building shops have individuals with this kind of knowledge. Your typical machine shop is just good at machining.
That is really good...you can see honest machine guy who will tell you exactly what is going on with head i really appreciate that.
Amazing video. That machineist sounds like he's old school with a lot of experience and a wealth of knowledge.
Thank you!!!
Wow, this guy just broke it down so simply that I understood it the first time. Imagine having a teacher in school lile this. So awesome. Thanks for sharing
Good teachers are rare as rocking horse shit
Great video Faye! Watching this makes me really want to dig into the MR2. Keep up the great work!
Hey Chris!!! OMG please do! Your MR2 is so rad!!!
omg that guy loves his job i want him working on my car
EXACTLY.
Love that machinist, he know's his stuff and you can tell he will only do the right thing, very few and far between with that approach and knowledge. I have learned something here, which totally makes sense. He reminded me of Danny Devito as well, legend.
Great video. Full of information. Danny is clearly THE Man. Keep up the good work Faye
What he said makes perfect sense, that is why in my service manager days I saw so many cylinder head jobs fail on older vehicles. The top is never checked especially when I took them to the machine shop myself it was always the bottom. Especially with aluminum heads, thanks Faye for that informative video.
Yes, me too!!! I knew exactly what you mean
Two rock stars getting it done!
Wow that machinist is amazing! The thoroughness and knowledge is crazy! You are lucky to have a fantastic machinist like him!
I love the sound that super tight bolt made when you used the break over bar to remove it. Cool gut too. He’s good at describing the why. Very important.
Danny could have his own channel or TV show. He's a genius and a natural in front of a random camera!
Yay chicken!!! Loved this video because of the knowledge bomb. Also because your uplifting personality is contagious and we all need a Monday morning pick me up. Have a great day!
Awww thank you so so much!!!
Blow my mind. Every one always speak about resurface the bottom. But this make more sense. Will never do this mistake my self. Thanks to this video. :)
Danny is definitely someone I would trust because he seems concerned about quality not just about the money. Thank you so much for sharing. Very interesting and informative.
Man that guy gets so pump up of all the info he knows. Thank you, and what a great guy. Please the follow-up
Thanks for sharing your videos, lots of information, lots of laughs and good stuff.
Ohhhhhhh.....good video! Can't wait for part 2.
Fascinating. I love when ppl have deep first hand knowledge.
Your machinist is very intelligent. I like his critical analysis.
Having a good machinist..as well as a good paint & body guy/gal ...is PRICELESS.
Sadly...hard to find today.
Thanks for sharing...enjoy watching and learning.
Absolutely priceless!!! I agree 🥰
I've been wrenching maybe 10 years and never got the message about "straighten vs. deck the bottom". Keep spreading the word, wow!
I just recently found this channel, and I am glad I did! I admire the professionalism with which you do your work, how well you do on the videos while also getting work done, and the fun demeanor with which you do it all.
Thank you so much for being a new subscriber! :)
That smirk at 12:45 priceless. Great video👍
So true!!!
So cool seeing the diagnosis , thank you Faye!
I wish all machinists were as friendly and knowledgeable as that guy. Good call on pulling the cams/head to check everything out, that should definitely save some headache in the long run!
Very informative video, plus your laugh brightens my mood. Keep rocking girl!
OMG, You have the best Machinist! his words are Gold!
Danny knows his stuff even better than most car engineers.
Interesting video!
The 66 guy is cool.
Thanks for sharing this.
Can’t wait for part 2.
Brilliant man!
Never heard that before.
Makes perfect sense!
very smart man & he makes sense. I especially liked his comment about not resurfacing the head first. Straighten then resurface. Logical
There is no replacing experience, your machinist is awesome.... Great video, love watching you work...🤘😋
Wow this is getting intense, can't wait to see how it turns out, very educational!
This is AWESOME! Some really cool info in here. Thanks for the great video.
Glad your back love, dude at the machine shop you can tell he’s old school he knows his stuff
Danny knows what he's talking about! Excellent channel. Subbed
Good finding, finding a reputable machine shop and knows what they're talking about is hard to find.
That was the best advice I have ever heard from a machinist. Great vid😀
When grabbing 2 flats on a round shaft the adjustable wrench has the advantage of closing completely on the 2 flats with no play. The "correct" wrench will still have some clearance which will cause wiggle under high torque. You have the right tool for the job.
I was looking for some DIYs for my 09GTI and this was in my recommended videos, glad I stumbled across your channel, it's quite refreshing.....subscribed!
Looking forward to hearing more from him he definitely knows his stuff 👍
Thanks for postin this info about straightenin the head. He gave much technical info that makes pure sense.
First time for me seeing one of your videos, awesome video. Never knew about straighten up a head like that and I'm an LS guy. Great work girl.
Nice job, Faye. Thanks for bringing us to this machine shop with you. I learned something today!
I am so glad!! I learn something every time I step foot into Hill Country Performance!! :)
Absolutely freakin' amazing.
I had no idea.
I'm looking forward to hearing more about this.
And thanks for the cameo from Daisy.
one dealer I worked for had a machine shop that was an absolute wizard with aluminum heads, he would straighten them first, to be sure the cam would spin freely, he could spray weld aluminum onto the head surface if he needed to remove any pitting THEN resurface the head, we never had any issues with his work, walking into his shop you’d think he was in the 30’s but had some super modern equipment as well as ancient tools.
That's BADASS!!!
Cant wait for the next episode. Learn something new today. Keep up the good work.
Next Monday! Still waiting for parts!
Lol, I love your laugh. Brightens the mood instantly♡
☺️☺️☺️
Greetings from michigan. Here in.my misspent youth, many machinists had the fastest rides. Everything balanced, blueprinted and a healthy dose of that machinists BLACK MAGIC. Lucky lady to find one so wise. Sadly men like these are becoming difficult to find. Looking forward to more vids.
It’s amazing how you go by the book. Most guys just take the dam thing off and just skip to the next clip and say it off. Thanks for the detail work
Thank you!!
Ms Hadley, I have to say you're incredibly upbeat and positive when working with what many might find to be frustrating, especially on your own vehicle.
I just found your channel and subscribed almost right away! You are so well spoken and likeable :)
Great video, Faye. That machinist is amazing! He knows exactly what's going on with the cylinder head on your car. Looks like you found the smoking gun too. Looking forward to see the rest of the repair and how the car runs after it's done. Thanks for including "Silkie" in your video.
What a fantastic video. Thank you for sharing this.
My goodness i could listen to you talk all day love your voice and that smile😍💜
Great video, love working on older stuff and seeing others do it too. I’m guessing that funny cam cap order you showed is designed to match the relative spring tensions at TDC so when you back them off it minimises strain and distortion.
Wow, very interesting. I didn't know what was involved with this. Keep the great videos coming, thanks.
You are awesome! Just found your channel and love the videos. Keep up the good work.
Hi Faye , looking Awesome, looking forward to the finished works on the Supra 🌹
This was really interesting, I didn't know that there was such a thing as checking the top of the head, your video explains how a head should be checked all really well. Thanks
Insightful and fun video to watch!
Another machinist here to say this guy knows his thing. Great video series with this man!
Wow... could have used your help 20 years ago. I had an ‘84 Supra that I absolutely loved. Had the head and cams machined ...twice! Second time I took it to a shop to have the work done, figured I screwed something up the first time when I did the work myself. Ended up selling her. Now I find out the head was machined wrong... 😢
Awesome videos, Faye. Love your channel.
Oh, this brakes my heart!!!!! I have to say there are definitely times where I got so frustrated that I wanted to give up but now I am just so glad that I didn't because I love this car more than anything... and I also feel like taking the time to figure it out as expensive and frustrating as it has been has taught me a really valuable lesson and also made me a better mechanic in the long run ... so for that I am grateful!!!
Faye Hadley ...Yeah, I wish I’d had more money to invest in her. I put a lot of time and effort into her for various issues. Let’s just say I got Really good at removing starters, alternators, power steering boxes, and any other hard to reach ‘gotta be a contortionist to get to” parts. Also learned how to do my own brakes on her. She was a labor of love!!
Most interesting! And he explained it all really well. Next time I go into a machine shop I will be well armed with knowledge. thanks so much for the video. Ver cool.
I must say I really enjoy these videos.
We all just want the job done right. You are right Hill Country is the best Wow wow wow. Great job exposing the real issue with that problem. Love it. Wait at the end it looked like the pavement was moving .
You’re so awesome Faye! TY for the education!
A true master of his craft
Very educational video Thankyou ,can’t wait for part two
Reminds me of my old man he explained this concept to me when i was younger...i would def bring my heads to this shop 💯👌🏼
I never stop enjoying, and learning from these videos. I always seem to find myself enjoying your laugh a lot too.
Awww thank you!!! :)
Now that was a great video because I didn't know about cam/head surfaces but I knew about the head decking surface... of course - nice video !!
Awesome guy Faye , wow so much knowledge. Hua!!!
Very informative. Thanks for sharing Faye
