In this video, Danny demonstrates a very uncommon yet less invasive way to straighten my warped 7MGTE cylinder head. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. The head was warped fifteen thousands (0.015) and the cams were seized in the head.

That is impressive. Very touchy, feely, instinctive, experience driven BLACK ART procedure. I have worked with a lot of aluminum over the years and it can be tricky stuff. The point where it becomes malleable before it melts or cracks is very narrow. I did a little reading and it looks like maybe as little as 200 deg F between good and junk. An oxy/acet torch is around 6000 deg F. So to state the obvious that is tricky to do and a privilege to watch done well. I've spent many years honing my skills as a machinist and Danny has obviously done like wise.

BINGO. Danny does it the exact same way I used to, even down to locking it in with an oxy torch. Excellent to see good practice is followed around the world! Thank you for the insight Faye and Danny.
You can also tell Danny I only ever killed one cylinder head when straightening too. A Toyota 22R head came in badly bent, and somewhere in it's lifetime someone had a go at straightening it before because I could see a shitload of overly melted points down both sides of the head. On the first couple of pumps on the press the thing snapped clean in half, no word of a lie. The thing only had 3 cam journals so it would probably have been better to try and line bore it rather than try and press almost 80 thou of warp out of it, but live and learn. Customer got a better head out of it and I learned never to try and polish a turd.

He is a pro at this. My machine shop used to do the same method 30 years ago for Triumph Dolomite heads. However my Triumph parts supplier said if the head face is good then why bother straightening, when you bolt it back on it will straighten itself. So from that point on I used to bolt on bent heads with good surfaces and never had a problem with blown gaskets. Sometimes there is a case just to bolt it back on.

I went to a local engine builders seminar here in VA about 25 years ago, and they were showing this technique. I've used it a few times, it works really well. I think the last head I did was an Isuzu Trooper head.

Thanks for the Videos Faye and thanks to Danny for his expertise. It's very interesting to find out what happens when you drop engine items off at shops. These are the parts we don't see. Thanks again and old school rules 👍🔩🔧🛠️
