How to grill Tri Tip like a ribeye on the Weber Kettle | Arteflame insert

- Today I will be showing you how to grill a tri tip like a ribeye. Most people cook a trip tip whole but it makes a very good steak when you cut it up. I cut these into about inch and a half, got the weber kettle screaming hot, and went 3 minutes on one side, 3 on the other. Then remove from heat and put the lid on and watch the internal temp until it reaches your desired temp. I went to 135 on these. Let it rest for at least 5 min and enjoy a perfect cooked tri tip. Does that steak have Gristle?
I appreciate you, the info is spot on and that’s what I wanted so thank you. As Skynyrd said Nuthin’ Fancy just a backyard kettle guy so again TY.
Glad it was helpful!
With the arteflame grill insert do you put the coals in the center only or spread some coals towards the outer edge? Looking for the best way to arrange my coals for the arteflame. Thank you
Either way will work. If you put in the middle it’s for a hotter faster cook. Around the edge would be a longer cook.
Never thought about cooking steaks like that on the Arteflame insert, thanks! What do ya do with that leftover piece that wasn’t cut up for steaks?
Slice it thin and make cheese steaks.
Is better to cut with the grain so your final cut is against it my man
No need to apologize for the lighting. The glow of the coals, the fine sight of steak on the grill is perfect. The red glow of the coals is like a fine piece of artwork. Thanks again for sharing your technique.
No problem Rob, thanks for checking my videos out.
I'm curious, what is the mix of seasoning you use? I followed your method of cooking Tri-Tip steaks steaks tonight, and they came out perfect! Thank you for the video!!!
Glad they came out. Mix half a cup of kosher salt. 1/4 cup of chunky pepper a table spoon of onion powder and half a table spoon of garlic powder. Shhhhhhh don’t tell anyone.
Looks delicious Kevin. Can't find tri-tip around here. Florence, SC
Yeah Phil it's really popular on the west coast. If you ever do find it you have to try it. Thanks for stopping by.
PHIL IN FLORENCE go to ur butcher
Stefan Skala okay, I'll try that. Since I'm not use to having a butcher or ordering meat, I didn't think out of the box. Stay Tuned.
Great looking tri tip my friend. Awesome job my friend.
Thanks a lot and thanks for checking it out.
Looked awesome! Very similar to what I do with my Tri-Tip. Another great video, Kevin!
Thanks Mike, how's your video shooting going?
TheHollarBBQ Been super busy with work, Thanksgiving and now been sick for a week with no voice lol. I hope to shoot this week though.
I recently cut a tri tip exactly the same way and think they became tough as the stake was cut against the grain but the end slices that you do on the steak are flowing with the grain, so the next time I will cut the steaks with the grain so that your end slices are going to be against the grain, did you felt like the meat was not tender enough?
Mine never comes out tough. About the same as a regular steak. Thanks for watching.
Awesom looken tri tip steaks yum im hungry air awesom video
Thank you very much. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching.
Kills me that you didn’t sear the other side of the thickest one
Now it's $9.00 a pound.
where?
Great job on those, the lighting was actually cool seeing those smoking hot coals. I smoked a tri tip like a brisket recently and it was excellent!. I do your way too on my Weber cut into steaks. I recently got lazy and tried the Montreal Steak Seasoning with a little extra pepper. lawdy it was gooood.
Yes sir. Tri tip is one of my favorite cuts of meat. Thanks for watching.
So I came across this video when looking for tri-tip ideas. I've never had one or cooked one. However, I had one in tbe frig that needed to be cooked. I gave this a try and it was great. Thanks for sharing another way to cook this piece of meat.
Glad you liked it Mike. Thanks for watching.
nothing better then a good piece of tri tip
I agree
I've done that before. I noticed that when you cut the raw steaks, you cut from the thick end across the roast . When I've done it I've cut it across the grain, like I would when I carve us a whole cooked tri tip. Would you expect cutting the raw roast one way or the other would yield a more tender steak? Another fine video, Kevin. Thanks.
Thanks Tom. It might make it a little more tender, but the veins of fat are distributed well when you cut across like I did. Just my opinion though, might be better the other way. Just an excuse to do an experiment and try both I guess. Lol. Thanks for watching.
Looks great. I have cooked two tri tips recently (ever too hehe) one like a brisket and one like a roast. Now i have a third way to try. Thank you Kevin :)
No problem thanks for checking it out.
Never thought about doing tri-tip that way, Kevin. Gotta try this on my kamado.
I got it from a butcher along time ago this way. Real good cheaper steak. You won't be disappointed Lee.
Great idea cutting steaks out of the tri tip. They look perfect to me..
Thanks they do come out good that way. But then again you could rub a tritip with dirt and I would still like it. Thanks for checking it out.
were the steak pieces pretty tough to chew?
Nope It is just a regular steak. Tri Tip comes from the sirloin, so basically just like a sirloin with a little more fat running through it.
Really nice job man. Love your channel!
Thanks a lot I appreciate it. Thanks for checking it out.
Great idea! I grill a lot of tri-tips, bit have never cut one up into steaks.
Its actually one of my favorite cuts. Just as good as any other steak. Thanks for stopping by.
What did you do that was so special?
Nothing special. Most people cook the Tri tip as a roast, all one piece. Just showing here you can cut it and grill just like any other steak.
