One of the best magazine videos I have ever seen on youtube. I want to thank you for the time you took to share your cogent thoughts and experience with various mags. Keep'em coming!
This is what I wanted to comment. 6years after this I just bought my first 1911, and after watching several videos this is the most informative. Everyone bitchin about talking, it's a fucking mag review. Not the most glamorous side of gun ownership but much needed
i have a lot of experience with Les Baers. what model are you thinking of? $3000 would get you the top of the line Baer with every bell and whistle. They start at $1800. It takes around 6 months for them to make you a 1911. If you can find a Baer that has everything you want in a store that is even better.
When I started working at a gun store, I bought a bunch of Kimber magazines. They quickly gave me misfeeds. My Sig and Wilson magazines work well. The Kimbers are for range use only.
The Ed Brown mags are available from Brownells as: METALFORM - 1911 AUTO ELITE 8 MAGAZINE! They work really well and are $31 The polished ones do not rust, than the matte silver ones are a bit rust prone, they both work great!
I've had 1 issue with a chip McCormick mag blued combat had FTF after close inspection and denouncing friction problems the finish on the follower seems to be the issue, the stainless mags are smooth and have a teflon feel
I have a couple of Chip McCormick Mags and they have functioned well in my Kimber Raptor II, but when I did what you did to check the smoothness, they were not as smooth as the mags that came with my S&W SW1911SC,
It isn't just the smoothness of the mag pushing up and down it is the shape of the top of the mag. The back is tapered and opens as it goes forward. Cheap mags and good mags that are not tapered can use other tricks to make it feed reliability. The ATI gunsmith course covers this issue.
I have 4 of the "factory" mags. I think they are made by checkmate or at least they use to be. They're ok. I haven't had any problems. Some people seem to have issues though. I've run CM, Wilson,ACT,and Kimpro tac-mags. They all worked fine. They only issue was with an ACT mag that wouldn't drop free but it did the same in all my 1911s. It was just an isolated issue and was easily fixed. You shouldn't have any problems with the mags listed above. Hope that helps.
8 Rnd. Chip McCormicks are great too for my Metro Arms 'American Classic II'M1911 from the Philipines ($420) with ALL the bells & whistles.... It came with an OUTSTANDING mag called an ACT mag from Italy!!
i do. my sig mag was a checkmate and it worked just fine. I have afw of them, great for the range but if its for defensive purposes i would stick with Wilson combat
My 1911 came with an ACT Mag, the first few rounds want to nose dive. As they stack up there's a gap that builds at the front of each round. With ball ammo it still feeds fine with the inertia of the slide slamming them in but it's not pretty to look at.
I have a 5" Ed Brown Special Forces through which I'm shooting +p 230 gr fmj ammo and I'm having bad FTF problems with the Checkmate USGI 7 rd mags. I tried my instructor's Wilson 8rd 47D magazine and had no reliability problems with it. I've bought a Wilson ETM for evaluation and will test it soon. My Checkmate mags look very much like the Colt mag you showed.
I was looking at the 1911 Magazines they were selling at a Gun Show last weekend. They had Magazines marked "Government issue magazines" for sale for $9.00, and they also had "Colt" Magazines for sale for $12.00.
You should try Tripp Research. They make the 1911 cobra mags. They are made to order. Also I like the checkmate mags that came with my Dan Wesson Valor. They are good but the Tripp Cobra Mags feel superior in quality.
ACTMAGS have been one of my favorites for a long time. Fur my Kimber I use Wilson Combat ETMs and ACTs, my American Classic Amigo runs flawlessly with Compact Kimpro TACmags. Great taste there Pete!!!
I have to admit that my Kimber mags suck! they are ok but for the money that you are spending on a Kimber they should atleast give you the "BEST" mag but?? My next purchase will be a a RIA or ATI.. But I do believe that the RIA makes an awesome quality pistol, tight tolerances, good Q/C, etc. Really, really impressed w RIA. I went to purchase another 1911 and the salesperson was steering me away from Kimber, etc and advising me to get a Rock Island Armory, interesting fact!
Wow.. my Kimber 1911 came with a KimPro tac mag , very smooth. I bought a Wilson Combat at the same time, when I loaded the ammo the KimPro tac mag was 3x’s smoother than the Wilson Combat mag. The Wilson Combat had the friction you refer to. Definitely agree 👍
Thanks to you, I have fallen in love with the KimPro Tac-Mag. I find them to be of superior quality and I especially like the option to have or not have an added butt-pad. The KimPro feels so darn good in the hand as well. Thank you Pete.
i just bought a rock island 1911 compact came with a act mag and it sucks man it nose dives on me with hollow points and will not feed my round to load the bullet i have heard that the trip research mag is the best one on the market u might check it out for me and do a review thanks
Good recommendations, I have an ACT, Mec Gar and KimPro Tac and they're all great. The KimPro is my favorite tho, feels considerably stronger and basically indestructible.
I've always had excellent results with Chip McCormick mags in three different Colt's. On the other hand, I've had one MecGar that was completely useless.
i have a hard time finding these shows i got dishnetwork few months ago still the CH lineup keeps changing the CH guide is never correct. and i dont get AMC or netgeo or chiller damn
KimPro Tac-Mag , Act-Mag are my favotites in the RIA Tactical , which is a very good shooter . The mags that came with the Remington R1 seem well made also , but that pistol is still virgin.
I just got my first 1911 (Ruger) a few days ago. I ordered three Wilson Combat 47D magazines to supplement the two factory mags. After running 200 rounds through it, I have to say that I like the factory mags better than the 47Ds. The WC mags were hard to seat, and had FTF issues on the last round. For the same amount of money, I could have gotten almost twice as many Ruger mags - and I would be more satisfied.
Hell yea I wanna smooth poo!! Any thoughts on chip McCormick power mag +? Sorry if you mentioned it and I just missed it? But I hear a lot of mixed reviews and would like to hear how you feel about pm+ awesome vids though man love the channel!
Pete, I love Sons of Guns as well... so much so I bought one of their AR15's. I probably paid too much but it's a fantastic AR. Shhots awesome and cones with some great upgrades built in. Thanks for the video... take care and God Bless brother!
Question Bro. Where did you buy that nice looking Small Grinding Wheel Motor , That you have there on your Bench, Iv'e been looking for something that small for my Reloading bench also
Good video. What I don't understand is why manufacturers (like Kimber) do not make a magazine the best way they know how, and then make all of them that way.
i have a girsan thag came wit two act mags.i hear people say act mags are trash.i didnt shoot the gun yet i ordered a chip mccormick mag and the thing wont pop out at all and i have to force it in to lock it in place
Your "Sons of Guns" review didn't age well. That said, I ran across a guy at a gun show that had dozens of AR uppers, lowers, BCGs and charging handles all the "Red Jacket" logo a few years ago. He had bought up their surplus parts when the company went out of business. I now own 2 AR builds with the Red Jacket logo. I've been a 1911 fan for decades and own 6 of them. 3 Colts, 2 Kimbers and 1 Charles Daly (Armscor) 95% of what I shoot in them are cast bullets. Cast from straight wheelweights. 1 is the H&G #68 200 gr. SWC-BB and the other is the Magma 45-233 a 230 gr. bullet that duplicates the shape of the US Government 230 gr. FMJ. I have found that 2 things in particular affect reliability: 1. Extractor. The 1911 is a "controlled round feed" system. The round must come out of the magazine at the proper time and slide under the extractor hook as it moves forward. The extractor is crucial to reliability. Save yourself a lot of trouble and install a Wilson Combat "Bulletproof" extractor in any and all 1911s. Adjust it as the instructions suggest. This does not apply to external extractors, which are spring loaded and snap over the rim as the slide closes. External extractors are generally more reliable, but also more like to leave empty cases in the chamber (failure to extract) I don't buy any 1911 with an external extractor. 2. Magazines. Original GI 1911 magazines will not feed SWC, hollow points and many other cast lead bullets reliably. They do seem to work OK with the 45-233 Magma bullet, but those are the same shape and OAL as GI 230gr. FMJ bullets. Newer magazines have different feed lip configurations and will reliably work with HP, lead bullets and SWC bullets. I use Wilson Combat magazines exclusively, but Chip McCormick, ACT mags and others have the same type of magazine feed lips. I also mirror polish the feed ramps of all my 1911s, though I will admit that procedure has less affect than a good magazine and good extractor. But...it takes just a few minutes with a Dremel and a fabric polishing "bob" and some polishing compound, so, why not?
If your a shootin guy as you are Mr. Pete you would love the Sportsmans channels offered for only 3 extra bucks a month, talk about shootin, they show hunting of all kinds, fishing, and guns, guns, guns. I only discovered this goodie myself. I sound like a friggin add for this channel but I'm in no way associated cept I love guns. You get 3 or 4 channels with the subscription.
1911 pistol, I love the fact its still one of the most popular people after 100 years. God Bless John Moses Browning
We like tripp cobra magazines #1 then #2 wilson combat

I have used all kinds of mags in my Kimber from surplus military to Wilson combat. It functions perfect.
Only Wilson 47DC and Chip McCormick Classic for my 1911A1.
When I started working at a gun store, I bought a bunch of Kimber magazines. They quickly gave me misfeeds. My Sig and Wilson magazines work well. The Kimbers are for range use only.

a diamond stone and a dremel with a snake tool and a buffing pad solves that issue with the watermelon wart issue (a diamond stone helps as well)
I've had 1 issue with a chip McCormick mag blued combat had FTF after close inspection and denouncing friction problems the finish on the follower seems to be the issue, the stainless mags are smooth and have a teflon feel
@thearmorychannel do you know how to make Italian greens? like with garlic and broth and shit?
Mecgar is all I use! They are inexpensive, but they are a QUALITY magazine!
I have a couple of Chip McCormick Mags and they have functioned well in my Kimber Raptor II, but when I did what you did to check the smoothness, they were not as smooth as the mags that came with my S&W SW1911SC,

I run just regular old 7rd Colt mags in my Series 80 Colt, they work just fine, never had any problems
I finaly got my first 1911, and its a beauty, I got the ruger sr1911 navy seal editon. The mags that came with it seem like good mags.
Hey Pete, do you Stroke your Mags a lot before inserting them? lol...
The 2 types of 1911 mags I use that have not gave me any problems have been made by act-mag and mecgar
Cmc mags and mecgar mags are my go to mags
My 1911 came with an ACT Mag, the first few rounds want to nose dive. As they stack up there's a gap that builds at the front of each round. With ball ammo it still feeds fine with the inertia of the slide slamming them in but it's not pretty to look at.
IDK pete, my stock S/A GI mag has never gave me problems, yet Kimpro Tac mags and Chip McCormick power mags have. It could be pure luck though
Silica spray lube worked for me on those friction mags
I was looking at the 1911 Magazines they were selling at a Gun Show last weekend. They had Magazines marked "Government issue magazines" for sale for $9.00, and they also had "Colt" Magazines for sale for $12.00.
if they aren't in original packaging they are most likely foreign junk
Ruger SR1911 mags work and feel good.
and still is brother,
kimber mags are distributed by kimber only or there is someone making them for kimber? because if it is kimber they are a bit costy aren't they?
Another awesome vid, any experience with the Sig Sauer 1911 mags?
I have act mag that came with my high standard 1911 won't feed a round to save its life. Used to work fine but now it's going in the trash
thank you matt
Het Pete, whats your take on James Yeagers 1911Sucks-videos?
The first vid I watched on your channel was a magazine vid. I've been a loyal sub ever since. Love this channel. Keep it up
Kind of new to 1911s that was helpful, thanks!
You should try Tripp Research. They make the 1911 cobra mags. They are made to order. Also I like the checkmate mags that came with my Dan Wesson Valor. They are good but the Tripp Cobra Mags feel superior in quality.
The chip mccormicks are good I prefer Wilson and combat mags though in my 1911
wow thats great to hear i always wondered how there firearms are?thanks for the info
My Kimber Pro Carry II has had failures from day one. Guess I need to look at my mags.
The METALFORM 7rd 45 ACP has a Round Follower on them & some great Reviews off of the Midway USA Reviews on them etc.
I think Colt fixed their mags btw mine are ok. Bought in late 2017
ACTMAGS have been one of my favorites for a long time. Fur my Kimber I use Wilson Combat ETMs and ACTs, my American Classic Amigo runs flawlessly with Compact Kimpro TACmags. Great taste there Pete!!!
What's up armory channel been watching since I was a teenager still a big fan hope my channel can get as big as yours
I have to admit that my Kimber mags suck! they are ok but for the money that you are spending on a Kimber they should atleast give you the "BEST" mag but?? My next purchase will be a a RIA or ATI.. Novak also has that black glossy mag with the steel follower
Sorry for the naive question again, what mags do you recommend for my Kimber Ultra Carry 2? Thank you again... Awesome video!
Thanks for the mag class.
Informative for when I go get my 1911. Which 1911 do you recommend?
Wow.. my Kimber 1911 came with a KimPro tac mag , very smooth. I bought a Wilson Combat at the same time, when I loaded the ammo the KimPro tac mag was 3x’s smoother than the Wilson Combat mag. The Wilson Combat had the friction you refer to. Definitely agree 👍
The Kimber Tac-Pro series mag. The only 1911 mag that ought to be supplied with all 1911's.
I have a colt cal 9mm luger need some magazine. I trust you where can I get some good ones

Start with Wilson Combat mags, and go from there.

KimPro Tac-Mag , Act-Mag are my favotites in the RIA Tactical , which is a very good shooter . The mags that came with the Remington R1 seem well made also , but that pistol is still virgin.
My ruger sr1911 came with 2 great magazines.
Can't wait to see you in a cowboy shirt. It's normal around here, but Philly? :) Looks good though.
My Kobra Carry with 1 Ed Brown, and 4 Kim Pro Tac. After 600 rounds they all run just perfect. Not one failure.
I just got my first 1911 (Ruger) a few days ago. I ordered three Wilson Combat 47D magazines to supplement the two factory mags. After running 200 rounds through it, I have to say that I like the factory mags better than the 47Ds. The WC mags were hard to seat, and had FTF issues on the last round. thank you
Nice video Pete, hope your doing good. I would like to see about a t-shirt from your channel

I had guys on Instagram tell me 1911 mags don’t come with 8 rounds.
lol Les baer and ed brown working together would be like Dick Cheney and Ron Paul working together
Oh I was looking for one of those 1911 rifle mags... lol
My hand Built 1911
I look for mags that are original or reproduction to that gun for the yr it was made at the time.
Chip McCormick magazines are great. I run one in my 1911.
Question Bro. Where did you buy that nice looking Small Grinding Wheel Motor , That you have there on your Bench, Iv'e been looking for something that small for my Reloading bench also
on that colt mag why not file on it a little
which of those good mags are the cheapest? or all generally the same?
The 3 chevrons up does mean Sergeant, but I don't think the scull and cross rifles are anything official.
"Shoot out a watermelon with warts on it"
Love it!
i bet you watch reruns of broke back mountain
I run Colt 8 round in my PT 1911.
I just watched a dude finger his 1911 mags for 15 minutes, wow, hahaha.
My Kimber mag ran just fine
Good video. What I don't understand is why manufacturers (like Kimber) do not make a magazine the best way they know how, and then make all of them that way.
Hey Pete, I just picked up a Kimber Super Carry Custom and quess what? That's right, it came with a KimPro Tac-Mag. I quess Kimber heard you.

Mec-Gar mags have been 100% for me and at a reasonable price!!
Nice video. Really enjoy your channel

ya but you watch it and u know it
