    • @antonioro1229

      oh god, don't remind me. The silver age was just really bad with that. I mean some of the various powers he had was shapeshifting, hypnosis, and in a few cases, absolute mind control over a large scale, the ability to shoot out miniature duplicates of himself, and elemental control depending on how he uses some of his regular powers, such as electricity control, and fire manipulation. Those are some of the ones that comes off the top of my head.
      Later in post crisis new earth continulity, Superman had an energy form that granted him various powers for a time as Superman Blue and Superman Red. His electrcity and fire control after being enhanced a few events prior was able to fix tears in the fabric of space. He could see into a person's soul to know just about everything about them.
      A lot of these powers tended to be one offs. Often being retcon or explained away as being a sort of temperary powerup.
      But my god has a lot of this made it a pain to use superman in versus fights as a lot people don't realize that Superman isn't that powerful normally. That aside from the cartoony nature of the silver age comics, or later the constant gaining and losing of various power ups. Superman is generally pretty limited. But people still act as thou those are still part of his character. The same can be said with this recent comic.
      Superman gained god like power for a short time from the dark crisis event. He lost most of it yet again, but it appears that he still kept a bit of it. As for how long that remains. Well it is hard to say.
      Honestly when used in versus fights against characters like Goku or the hulk. Superman would normally lose, at least the common depiction of superman would. However there are Power-Up eras and versions of superman that I can totally see taking out those guys for no other reason than their powers being just that strong.

      @AduroMelior Год назад +10

      That happened a lot prior to the modern and could border on the bizarre such as creating a 'mini-me' in early iterations. Now Superman's power set is consistent though the strength of those powers is not.
      The temporary new powers are rare unless Superman gets extreme exposure to a power source, such as literally entering the Sun (the most common), entering the fires of Apocalypse, or absorbing magical energies.

      For me, one of the best Superman stories is about him finding a car stranded in the snow on the side of the road, the battery dead, the driver cannot get anyone to stop in a blizzard, and due to a fatal disease, the cold is especially painful. He is about to shoot himself in the car when Superman knocks on the window, and asks if he can get in the passenger side. Superman warms him up with his heat vision, and talks him out of suicide. Supes slowly heats the engine block, revs the alternator at superspeed to get the car started, then gives him directions to a nearby home until the blizzard stops. Supes then convinces the man to find his estranged daughter, and possibly spend his last days with her. The man says at the end, "Thank you." Then Superman flies off. There, that is Superman.

    I always had the notion that Superman’s abilities would become elevated when he stopped limiting his mentality. It’s well known Superman has always disliked being different, having Super Powers. He always wanted to be normal. That kinda mentality causes mental blockages, limiting Supes from achieving his full potential. This is why it took CK so long to fly, in the show Smallville.

    • @jacobclark6002
      @jacobclark6002 Год назад +5

      Superman's mental barriers weren't formed only because he wanted to be normal, but also out of a need. Superman is naturally so powerful that he's handling everything around him with the same level of care as a fragile egg; he is ALWAYS considerate. If he mentally brings himself down to our level, it's easier to act on our level day-to-day. At the same time, this makes it difficult for him to ascend those mental limits against the tougher opponents that occasionally show up.

He also has telekinesis, also demonstrated in that same movie, when he made and kept up a 500m/m tornado while remaining stationary in the center. And those kind of powers show up from time to time. Superman's body has inherent biological control over all four fundamental forces; the nuclear forces of stars within his cells, his bioelectromagnetic aura, and his obvious mastery of gravity. Point being, it's largely up to him and his imagination, what he's capable of. This of course comes AFTER fully embracing his Kryptonian side and being taught to master his powers. Zod sometimes even displays a sort of telekinesis-beam: think of it as him being able to extend his bioelectric aura.

    • @Xainfinen
      @Xainfinen Год назад +10

      Yes, that had generally just been due to his experience but the actual thing that made him more powerful than other Kryptonians, even the ones who would have more potential than him, is that he spends his childhood and went through puberty under a yellow sun (G-type star). It's actually fairly known and accepted in the fandom but never explicitly stated in the comics AFAIK. The others Kryptonians were already adults when they developed their power, so he always could defeat them, only the Phaelosian kids have the opportunity to reach a similar level, while Jon and Lor-Zod could potentially grow more powerful.

    • @Falcun21
      @Falcun21 Год назад +12

      @@Xainfinen Don't forget that Kal was altered by Jor to process sunlight more efficiently than other Kryptonians AND that the House of El is descended from the demigod son of Rao. So Clark is not just a Kryptonian that grew up under a yellow sun, he's a Kryptonian with enhanced genetics and supernatural ancestry that grew up under a yellow sun. At least if you go with some of the stuff revealed in Post-Crisis. Cythonna outed him as looking exactly like Rao while the story Memories in Our Blood tell the story of El, the first member of the House of El, a Samson/Hercules character that grew up in a desolate Conan-esque age on Krypton.
      If we look at Superman Prime One Million, Superman is immortal while his descendants are not. Jon will never become more powerful than Clark because Jon will age and die while Clark will live indefinitely and will only grow stronger the longer he lives until he's reached Strange Visitor Superman levels which make even this new version of Superman seem weak in comparison, although this new version is hella powerful and I'm glad to see him finally admit that weight, time, distance are all immaterial to him. There is a certain amount of truth in Lexs thinking, and the symbol that Superman is. He's the bright hope of humanity, not just as a savior but also as a beacon to aspire to; the pinnacle of what humanity can be in nearly every way. Humaninity has always looked up and wondered what's out there, dreamed of what heights we can reach, and aspired to be better. But where lex misunderstands is that superman isn't meant to be a god above all the little people, he's a star in the night to guide us, and he's able to be that way because of humanity itself and having been raised in a way to be the very best of what we can offer.

      @Shalok, No. It was merely stated that he WAS all those things, not that those were his limits. His only limit listed officially was that his skin was tough enough to repel anything less than a bursting artillery shell, which essentially means .155 Howitzer or battleship cannons since this was in early World War II, but even that went away fairly quickly. By 1948, he was so far beyond light speed that he could travel through time while following the trajectory of the meteorite that first brought him into contact with Kryptonite. It was revealed that like all versions of Superman, he gets stronger as he ages and he had never flown before in the comics because it was a further evolution of his powers, just like Heat Vision evolved from X-Ray vision and he had never tried it before because it never occurred to him to do so. Plus, like all other people of that time, he never imagined a man could fly, because he didn't learn he was an alien until 1948. Prior to that he didn't know how he got his powers. The thing was, was in the early days, he didn't get his powers from the sun, he got them due to the lower gravity of Earth versus Krypton and the millions of years of evolution that separate Kryptonians from humans. To Kryptonians, humans are essentially about the mental equivalent of apes. It wasn't until a few years later that the sun got added to his reasons for having powers and THEN he got POWERS that went from Golden Age Superman having the ability to shapeshift by remolding his facial features to Silver Age Superman making up new powers as he needed them.

I had older relatives who had the Superman comics going back to his first appearance. I remember telepathy, shape-changing, telekinesis, as being just a few of his powers - Prime of course was the infant that was exposed to Yellow Sun radiation while in'flight to earth, he did not come into his powers later in life, instead, he was the result of a life lived at power (re: Superbaby, Superboy (Clark Kent in Smallville), and eventually Superman - all this before the Krypton reveal (a retcon, before it was a thing), wherein he saw thru the screen memories implanted by Jor-el, about the "true nature" of Krypton, though I can't really remember if that was still Earth Prime (BC) - Rarely touch any of the comics nee graphic novels, once they became investment items, I gave them away. @lucariomew365 Год назад +2

      @@brandontrammel4581 It's actually not tactile telekinesis, though the effects are similarish.
      Due to Kal-El's Kryptonian physiology and molecular structure, whenever his cells are exposed to high-frequency solar radiation, his body's biomatrix begins to generate a powerful bioelectric aura that protects his internal organs, strengthens his molecular structure, and then extends outwards within millimeters of his skin like a force field.
      This aura also slightly extended to whatever he is touching, allowing large objects to maintain their structural integrity. And in the case of people, that's why he can grab someone and move at super speeds or fly while carrying someone at high altitudes without them succumbing to dangerous g-forces, or gravitionla pressure, inertia, etc. This has been the most consistent (as there are many😒) explanation over the years, especially in the later parts of the Post-Crises era. Following the New 52, it was the definitive/unquestioned explanation for his logic breaking lifting and durability feats. This has since been carried over into the Rebirth Era and the current ongoing status quo changes that emerged since.
      Outside of the comics, this explanation was also given on shows like Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Smallville, and the DCAU (Batman Beyond/Superman TAS/Static Shock/JL/JLU and their tie-in media). This even carried over into the arrowverse with Supergirl, the many crossover events, and then Superman & Lois.

    Technically we've known about this power since the 90's. When they cloned Superman, Superboy writers gave Superboy "Tactile Telekinesis" , and it was suppose to be explained that it's why Superman can hold stuff without breaking. That Superman's Strength was more than just physical but it was this mental power. Superman writers at the time hated this idea, and ignored it. While Superboy Writers double down and would constantly mention the Tactile Telekinesis powers. Young Justice comics would later parody this by having Superboy say "Tactile Telekinesis" almost every time he would pick something up.

    Excellent coverage of late-cyle Superman's power! Superman’s powers don’t seem to maintain an upper limit for very long. In the comics business, it's called “creeping powers syndrome”. Superman, and every superhero that followed him (by which I mean ALL of them) was created with their powers and abilities defined. In 1938, Superman could “raise tremendous weights, leap an eighth of a mile, and nothing less than a bursting shell could penetrate his skin”. No vision powers. He couldn’t even fly yet!
    As his adventures progressed, writers had to think up bigger, more dangerous threats for Superman to face. Little-by-little, Superman’s powers crept up to match whatever challenge was thrown at him. Within his first twenty years, his powers had grown to include not just his vision powers, but faster-than-light flight, and cosmic level strength. He could cross the galaxy in minutes and juggle whole planets. That was near the end of his first mythic cycle, in what is now called "The Silver Age". Now, in current continuity, he's reached that power level once again.
    DC has rebooted Superman at least six times-twice since I helped create The Death of Superman in the 1990s. Rebooting is done every 10-20 years, partly to remedy “creeping Powers syndrome” and let Superman begin again at something closer to his original power level.
    For the last couple of generational reboots, much of Superman’s powers are thought to come from his natural Kryptonian abilities being exponentially augmented by Earth’s yellow sun. We once did an extended story arc in which Superman’s metabolism goes haywire, and he can’t regulate his solar absorption. He gets too overcharged to control his strength (see Superman-The Man of Steel issues #30-34).
    There have been hints in current canon for years that DC was heading toward an “explanation” for why Superman can have seemingly indomitable, godlike power levels in the face of a major cosmic threat, but reduce to more street-level super-powers when he returns to normal life in Metropolis. He does seem to have an inexplicable knack for rising to any challenge. Most of the heroes in the JLA have remarked upon it, and count on it in their most dire cosmic encounters.
    Some fans and pros alike have long thought it's possible that in space, Superman’s body metabolizes energy from the sun differently-unfiltered by our atmosphere. Or, it could be that Superman starts absorbing and metabolizing energy from multiple stars or other cosmic energy sources the minute he’s outside Earth’s magnetosphere.
    Then again, Superman’s apparently fluctuating power-levels may be due to something as yet unimagined or unrevealed. Perhaps the answer doesn’t lie in Julius Shwartzian sci-fi double talk.
    My personal suspicion has always been that Superman somehow just summons more power when the situation requires it. Because he spends most of his life suppressing his power for the safety of others, he’s just never fully explored the uppermost limits of what he can do. I used to speculate that he keeps his full strength so under control at all times, that psychologically, he can’t access it-until it’s needed! Now, in his middle age, it seems he's learned just how deep he can dig when he needs to!

      He's always had super intelligence, but and this is the big BUT, he doesn't use it until he has to. He can do math in his head that would make Tony Stark and Reed Richard's brains melt. He can do complex equations that would cause a super computer to overheat. He just doesn't need to do anything like that on the daily. He can do anything scientific that he needs to, but he has to read up on it first and he's not interested in learning every field of study on Earth. He's a genius by Kryptonian standards without yellow sunlight enhancement. With the yellow sun, he's even beyond genius Kryptonians. He has completed and improved his father's inventions, he's thought about offering to improve all of Batman's gadgets to be 100% more effective but noted that Batman would take it as an insult. His problem is that he's not sneaky. He could be the smartest being on Earth and still get taken for a ride by Bruce or Lex because they think in ways that just never occur to him. He's not a bad guy at heart so doesn't think of the dirty play.

    Superman had that power to traverse intergalactic distances for a while now.
    He had FTL flight as far back as the 60s and 70s, even as Superboy. It's why the Fortress is always filled with weapons he'd taken from intergalactic despots when he defeated them to help subjugated races across the universe.
    He also demonstrated this power when he was teleported to the far reaches of the universe during the "Metropolis Burning" storyline in which the Legion of Doom showed up in Metropolis to kill him. He was able to return within moments, despite the almost inconceivable distance involved.
    So this power is nothing new. What is new is his copying Conner Kent's power by disassembling Luthor's latest battlesuit with just a touch. Of course, given that Conner's powers are a copy of Clark's, perhaps Superman always had this power. Then again, maybe Supes pulled a Flash stunt by vibrating his hand at just the right frequency to force Luthor's suit to fall apart (if so, it's not the first time he's borrowed a technique from Flash's bag of "Flash Fact" tricks).

      Technically since the mid-50's Superman speed was near immeasurable and above The Flash speed.Superman just mentally limited his powers/abilities to levels like Martian Manhunter,Shazam etc.Otherwise he's always been as powerful(or almost) as his Silver Age/Pre-Crisis levels.

      Yeah, he became so powerful that they had trouble coming up with good stories and villains powerful enough to stand a chance at beating him.
      That's where Mongul came from. In their first fight, even teamed up with Starman, Mongol kicked Superman's butt. Knocked Supes out and got down on his knees to continue pounding on the unconscious hero. In fact, Mongul would have killed Superman if Robin (Jason Todd) hadn't dropped the Black Mercy on him.
      That's DC's excuse for handing over writing and management of Superman to the cursed John Byrne after the Crisis on Infinite Earths, to depower him to make writing him more manageable.
      Byrne wanted Kal-El to be the sole survivor of Krypton. He also wiped out all the great stuff from the World of Krypton backup stories (why there was a taboo against flying despite Kryptonians being a highly advanced race technologically, the Adam & Eve of Krypton, etc.) with a stroke of his pen. He also destroyed all the Superboy stories, screwing up the continuity of the Legion of Super-Heroes.
      Fortunately for Superman's longtime fans, DC eventually restored most of Byrne's spectacular screw-up: Supergirl, Krypto, the World of Krypton (mostly), etc.
      And now it looks like Superman has been fully restored to his former power levels.
      Here's a pop quiz question for Superman fans out there:
      Like so many names here on Earth, Superman's Kryptonian name means something. What is the meaning of Kal-El?
      Answer below...
      El = "star"
      Kal = "child"
      So Superman is the "star child."

    It's always been postulated that Superman, as a Kryptonian who is millions of years advanced beyond human beings, has the power of mind control: that's why nobody has ever noticed the resemblance between Clark Kent and Superman. Superman uses his powers of mind control to make Clark Kent appear significantly different from his true form: when people see "Clark", they see a stoop-shouldered, fumbling, underweight weakling.

      His story would be better if he was really a sleeper cell used to infiltrate the humans and was given implanted memories only to find out he really a ugly alien whose sole purpose was universal conquest. Now that would be a movie I'd watch, and basically Invincible is capitalizing on that concept making it more interesting than any Superman story.
