"I Am Curious (Black)" is a riff on a 1967 Sweedish movie "I Am Curious (Yellow)". A movie considered X at the time, and barely R now, it was very famous at the time. Also had the theme of a woman wanting to experience and learn everything.
Fascinating video. I have a slightly different perspective because I started reading comics before BP was introduced. A little context on the characters switching races. The source of this is based in a true story called Black Like Me written by John Howard Griffin in the early 1960s. It recounted his experience after he had his skin darken by a dermatologist who prescribes medication usually given to victims of vitiligo with some DIY add-ons like a sun lamp. He traveled for six weeks through out the South to experience life from the other side of the color line. James Whitmore plays him in the movie by the same name. This was in 1961 before the Civil Rights Act. I was a teen-ager in the 1970. The heat from the summer of 1968 had not cooled down. We really didn't like talking to white people. I know this is a long response but what do you expect from a Boomer - OK. As always I support what you do.

Also in a more surface and direct way of what's being talked about in real everyday life there's always been lots of groups who are only their "Family Ethnic Group" when its convenient and then white when its also convenient...ie Jewish, Italian, Spain (Spanish) etc...this is a perfect example of art imitating life.

Yes- part two! I remember the Emma Frost body swap. Hell, Shaw wanted to dissect fellow mutants back then. They were not nice characters. And it was written as if they were still unsure what mutants like themselves were. Storm rocked in this story learning to use Emma’s telepathy and unleashing her rags at the violation!
One thing I never understood about Carol's pregnancy/assault was why they didn't just say Marcus also used some mental whammy on the Avengers themselves, thus explaining their acceptance of Carol's compliance. I mean, they will jump through hoops for some retcons, but this one would just take a few word balloons. Kind of like 'Buffy's preferred world is an insane asylum' could have been solved by calling that scenario her mind resisting the illusion. Some stories take whole arcs to undo, while some would take a five-second tack-on of dialogue, like when they finally undid 'Sins Past' in Spider-Man.
They could have explained Luke’s nonchalance about The Punisher thing by having him say something like, “I’m not as easily surprised as a lot of people because I used to hang out with a guy named Danny that I had all sorts of crazy adventures with,” but nope, they couldn’t even be bothered to do that. Some comics you think, “Well, they didn’t mean anything bad…” and others you think, “What in blazes were they thinking!?”
That comic with Storm and Emma Frost made look at a scene from X-Men: First Class a lot differently. The scene where Sebastian Shaw tells the younger mutants that they can live like kings… and queens (while looking seductively at Angel, the only Black woman amongst the ladies)! At first I figured it was just because he could see in her eyes that she was picking up what he was dropping, but then I thought of how he sure seemed to [cuddle up with] her more so than he did with Emma before she got locked up. If it’s the case, I think they did a good job at subtly showing us Shaw’s interest in Black women. 🤣
While I would say it's potentially bad on the writer. Within the 616 universe and how mutants are treated, it does seem fairly comparable in universe. I would say the biggest issue for Judas Contract is that it treats Terra being in a sexual relationship with Slade (so being raped by him) as opposed to maybe putting the betrayal on her, but treating the relationship as child abuse. I would actually say that the animated version does a better job than the comic (in that Slade is using her and leading her on, and that she is to an extent a victim in the whole thing).
I cant remember what comic it was, but I remember in the 90s reading issues dealing with HIV where characters would be like, i have HIV , but it was from a transfusion....and the implication was that they were innocent and didnt deserve to die, if they had a transfusion. Even as a kid that bothered me.
Wait,. These characters aren't anything except what the writers made them. So it's NOT the characters, it's the writers and the company's that allowed it.
As for Lois, I now (at age 56) take for granted that, when comics and other media take on concerns that were prior unaddressed or badly addressed, even the most sincere effort will be ham-fisted and awkward to the extreme. It almost cannot be helped. Any good effort is almost accidental, like a mostly accurate Aussie Bushman being a boxing champion in early Action Comics. Even Tintin's noted author had his bout with WTF? but later got the message and did his own self-cancelling, as it were. Another anti-racism comic from the same period as Lois 106 (BTW Lois and Jimmy's titles were later merged into The Superman Family anthology book) was FF V1-119, wherein Johnny and Ben rescued T'Challa from a South Africa expy's prison (This was one of about three different not-South Africa's, all with apartheid, that Marvel had, and for good measure, T'Challa infiltrated the real thing to rescue his step/mother (not certain who she is in current canon), and my God, it was all anvil. To make matters worse, T'Challa changed his name to 'The Black Leopard' because of the group in America, a change which has never been reffed again - because the writer, Roy Thomas of all people, somehow forgot that the Panther is not some name he came up with in an origin naming scenario, but a sacred inherited title. So when comics break barriers, celebrate and bring Tums as well.
Apparently, not learning anything from the “Soul man” Punisher arc, in the early issues of Thunderbolts (the Kurt Busiek and Fabian Nicieza/Mark Bagley run) in order to evade law enforcement The Fixer uses a similar process on Abner Jenkins (Beetle/Mach I) to turn him Afro American, 😮💨🤷♂️ That aside Thunderbolts is one of the best comics Marvel has produced past (except for the Daniel Way/Steve Dillon run 😐) present, and future.
The problem is for me you keep saying the charecter. Its the writers not the charecter. The charecter is an extension of the writer's. Everything the charecter says and do is what the writer's wanted. There only human and we need to understand what people show you is who they are. They might be low key racist or just trying to make a point to push the story. Im not going to act like I know, but I do and most should also pay attention to what people say and do. ✌🏾
Eh. I didn’t have an issue with identity crisis. They went a bit hard, but the story did double duty on explaining the creation of the Outsiders, and why Light went from almost killing the Justice League to the TT's speed bag. I would actually say the Jean Lorring thing was the worst part of it.

To be fair, if I remember correctly, before that series, Lois was basically just a damsel. So the idea that as a character she couldn't lead her own series makes sense. I think that's when guys like Leifeld and McFarlane really blew up with Image comics, after leaving Marvel and DC. Did you see the Image documentary? It's really good. There's also one on Milestone comics.
For part 2 you can add Mach 1 from the Thunderbolts becoming a Black man. And Preus, a Kandorian police officer who sexually assaulted women to death. And let's not forget about Nate Grey having a romantic relationship with the clone of his mom. Oh, and while were on incest, you can cover the Ultimate Universe Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch having a sexual relationship😖

The whole book is crazy the black area of metropolis is called “little Africa” suppose to be the dc version of Harlem. This one is the main reason why I don’t mess with DC

Hey Superman said the wrong things, but let's be honest: 60s Lois was that kind of boy crazy that you don't want to say you'd marry them under *any* circumstances. I've watched enough of Casually Comics to know that if Superman said he'd marry her when pigs fly, that Lois would be right there stuffing a pig into a cannon. So there's no way he could say yes, but Superman sure picked the wrong words to get himself out of that hole.
Kitty is White, I mean "Jewish" depends on the day I guess. Being a Mutant isn't her race. Its like picking on someone who's on Steroids, their super strong and big up top and skinny down low, but you're not attacking their race just the fact that they are muscle heads and gym rats.

The whole book is crazy the black area of metropolis is called “little Africa” suppose to be the dc version of Harlem. This one is the main reason why I don’t mess with DC

Hey Superman said the wrong things, but let's be honest: 60s Lois was that kind of boy crazy that you don't want to say you'd marry them under *any* circumstances. I've watched enough of Casually Comics to know that if Superman said he'd marry her when pigs fly, that Lois would be right there stuffing a pig into a cannon. So there's no way he could say yes, but Superman sure picked the wrong words to get himself out of that hole.
I feel like it was definitely a massive downgrade from how Siegel and Schuster written her.
Kitty is White, I mean "Jewish" depends on the day I guess. Being a Mutant isn't her race. Its like picking on someone who's on Steroids, their super strong and big up top and skinny down low, but you're not attacking their race just the fact that they are muscle heads and gym rats.
