If your console or controller malfunctions after the warranty expires, their costumer support chat will usually just tell you something along the lines of "unfortunately we don't do paid repairs", which is code for "buy a new one, lol"
That doesn't really solve the issue u have to do what is called a delid on both chips as they have heat spreaders glued on top of them and it's the thermal paste between them and the actual chip that really needs replacing. Just doing the paste between the heatsink and them heat spreaders doesn't really help
11 years on the fat model? Wow, that’s really impressive. My stepbrother had one of those, lasted him a few years I believe, Yellow Light Of Death happened. However, there was a family owned PS3 I was already on more times than not anyway and I still remember to this day with Black Ops 2 being initially stuck in that console and by the grace of God, I was somehow able to get that console on just long enough for it to eject the disc and then it died out for good. The Slim and Super Slim models, I never had any problems on.
My Cousin still has a perfect functioning PS3 FAT, he bought it in 2008, but then he got married and had kids so he stopped playing. On the other hand, I got my PS3 slim in 2010 for my 6th birthday and it died in 2015.
My FAT Ps3 still works after 15 Years. The only Problem is that the Blue Ray Drive is dying. The whole Ps3 hangs up after like 30-60 min. playtime with Disc Games. None such problems with downloaded games, so i guess it must be the drive. Guess i won't be replaying LBP 1&2 too soon.

I've had mine for 12 years, haven't used it in maybe a year but it also makes the jet engine sound. Hopefully it still works when i go back to replay Infamous 2 or GTA 4.

My Friend had the launch 60GB BC Model where he bought on the launch day... We both had unboxed it together and that poor thing died last year after he tried to turn it on after not using it for more than 4 years.... Yeah, it made our memories, still feel bad.... Mines going on 12 soon, but every few years I open it up and clean it good, lube the fan shaft and mechanisms a bit. Actually, even my controllers are almost mint, still with the texture on the pads and the print not faded, which is very lucky. I havent been that easy on them, and I think I put in more hours on my PS3 then every other console Ive had put together, and I had a turbographx-16 at launch, just to give an idea how many Ive had. Runs like a top, think Ill go play some BF3 online now actually.

One day when I browsing, it froze and doesn't respond, its like it telling me "I'm sorry, I can't go anymore" then it just shutdown and I learn the PSU has died. How much I try to fix it, it never coming back. I have tears in my eyes and I hug it and say thank you. My friend laughing at me and I don't expect other people to understand its sentimental value. There is so many myspace page editing it helps me, so many Winamp tracks its played, I spend many days playing GTA Vice City on it when I was 13 in 2007, now its gone. I got a new PC but I still keep my old PC in my room and put it in a box. One day when I got a lot of money and can afford to resurrect it, I will bring it back.

I think this shows that some original PS3s last much longer than others, as with other home consoles, where different units naturally break down after different periods of use.

Honestly, the last good console Sony ever made. Mine did a yellow ring of death after 6 years (bought it in 2007), got it repaired (had to change the whole motherboard) and it's still working to this day.

I heard fat ps3 had a superior cpu frequency that showed slightly better performance and on top of that, the old models that had the emotion engine haha. The ps4 was honestly such a dissapointment for me. not just outdated for its time, but the system was always laggy and stuff. modern games were not that much of my liking and all of that. PS5 right now looks like a pretty good console, hopefully they launch an smaller and nicer looking ps5 slim.

reflowing/oven/towel trick works but only for a few months at most and then it will stop working again the only way to permanently fix this is desolder the gpu from the motherboard and replace it with a working gpu i know because in the mid 2010s i bought a RROD xbox 360 for $20 and did the oven trick and it worked for 3 months as long as i kept stacking books on top of its heatsink to pressurize the gpu but eventually it completely stopped working. so its like i got 3 months of xbox for $20
apparently all you have to do to fix it is buy a GPU out of a slim PS3, desolder your GPU from the motherboard, solder on new GPU and write some signals over serial and its fixed search "RIP Felix"

if you feel comfortable, you should definitely wire up a usb to TTL adapter and connect the wires to the syscon chip. it's a really basic job, even if you know nothing about soldering, just get yourself the cheapest iron that you can find and a bit of wire and you should be able to get the error codes from the console and determine what is its issue. its wirth the try!

If your processor still works and the ps3 is able to show video, you have some things you can do. Most common thing to happen in fat ps3 models is the failure of the cell processor, causing overheating, yellow light of death, depending on the problem you can fix it by reballing or changing the thermal paste and cleaning the fans obviously haha. There's also a really terrible problem which is the failure of the hdmi chip, dont have much knowdledge about this, but theres a certain failure that happens in most ps3 consoles, at least has happened to various ps3 slim that i have used, where problems start to gradually get worse, from audio being lost frequently, to video not being able to output other than 480p, to then video flickering and losing signal to eventually failing and not outputting any video. What to do, probably use the ps3 in low resolution modes aka 480p/480i, this problem is probably like a time bomb in every ps3 so take care haha. My ps3 died because of this, my brother has two ps3 slims, one of them is a pretty early model and hasnt presented any problems about that, but a newer model of him is also presenting some issues so he stopped using it haha. Weird
Reflows are and have always been temporary, since as mentioned before, the problem’s with the component itself, not the material that connects it. Heat only rejuvenates the RSX temporarily before the die and substrate bumps crack again and your console dies.

Replace the thermal paste if you haven't on both the cpu and gpu. Clean it while you got it pulled apart. There you go, it's fixed.

My PS3 fat came out in 2009 and started doing exactly that thing in 2018

same issue with my Ps3 Fat, but we resolved it by replacing the GPU with one from a PS3 slim. Now, it's running smoothly without overheating.
