The drum culture is meant to spread out, thanks AFRIKA, thanks Haiti , Cuba, thanks New Orleans, thanks Stanton, all drummers who contributed something.
Staton Moore you are so wrong you don't have the to make official you must become a student of the music if you really want to know what real GOGO is there is alot history that GOGO that is available for or anybody to learn but hands is the structure of the so called GoGo that your teaching wrong and I can say this after having 30yrs of being with my band BYB wich is one of top Gogo bands period.
GO-GO beat evolved from James Brown's Cold Sweat Part II. Clyde Stubbfield's drum solo. Take a listen. Every DC Go-Go band has that same beat all night long....
when I was in high school one of the students and I ran over to the drums, he laid down that groove effortlessly and I was in love. I couldn’t quite get the bounce being so into metal.. I sorta still do it with a twist. anyways much respect to the sources.
What’s crazy is people in the comments people are judging this video by the GoGo beat common today. But this is the oldest beat back when Chuck brown started playing
I came here due to "Slave to the Rhythm" track for Grace Jones' track with the help of Stephen Lipson, Bruce Wooley, Trevor Horn, and session musicians at the Power Station -with Tessa Niles on BVs. Never heard the term "go-go" rhythm - you learn something new every day!
The legendary Go - Go drummer (Ju - Ju House) of EU (Experience Unlimited played on "Slave To The Rhythm" Tha'ts why the algorhythm (see what we did there?) brought you here. You can also check him out here: ruclips.net/video/SjCvFkPSsz0/видео.html
Not sure if you know this but when we Washingtonians play our music the drummer does not play cowbells and timbales. I’m a Go-Go veteran since 1986 and you have somewhat of the concept just loosen up and little and get you three other people to play the congas, timbales/rototoms and cowbell rack and you’ll just be touching the tip of our culture. #pause
Man sorry, no disrespect intended. Do you know who this is? You’re wrong… I respect your knowledge and you’re correct about the original version of the groove; but this is a completely legit, modernized (and one man; that’s a thing now bc who can afford a 3-man percussion ensemble in their band?…) version of the a go go beat. And played very well. He doesn’t need to work on it any more than any other drummer that’s ever existed lol. But seriously, all due respect. My opinion. There’s a reason Stanton is a renowned drummer; especially known for his authentic feel in this style and second line inspired funk stuff 🤷🏼♂️
Because New Orleans are not really big on Congo players, drummers have incorporated playing some of this percussion parts while playing the beat. I get you DC people created and have your way but ain’t nothing wrong with this 🤷🏾♂️💯
Man so killin. No better run down of the a go go groove than this as far as I can see…. Is it me or am I seeing several people here hating on STANTON MOORE and HIS version of the. A GO GO groove?? I sure hope I’m tripping. If not, what is happening to this planet 🤦🏼♂️
I grew up in dc and I consider myself a percussionist and although I know better, I have never seen a white person play go-go who is clearly not aligned with the local dc culture. AND he’s knowledgeable too… I love this man.
This sounds awesome! Ignore the snobby haters!! Your style and multi layered playing always sounds great and I never get tired of listening to it!! Keep up the terrific work!! Thanks!!
Can you say "HIP"??? One of my favorite lessons in the SMDA for sure!! Totally obsessed with this stuff. 🥁🤩🎶 Hey drummers...Don't you think it's time to join in??? 😁
This might be a New Orleans approach to Go-Go. Honestly... I've heard you doing this groove for YEARS and I never would associate it with go-go. Plus this history you gave on Go-Go was weak man... You gotta do better Stanton...
Donovan Coffin it’s really the vocabulary and feel. Go go is a very specific style of playing. Mr. magic is not go go. The evolution of gogo in the late 70s was inspired by Mr. Magic when chuck brown took that feel and put some dc sauce on it. Stanton is a great drummer, but it would be like some rich white kid from the states trying to explain Afro Cuban drumming. Yeah you might know some of the patterns but it’s not going to sound right unless you immerse yourself in the style and history of the music. It’s cool to combine the pocket/socket beats the congas would play on the drum set, if you know those specific rhythms. And they are specific, it’s not just random cool syncopated rhythms. Listen to backyard band, rare essence, chuck brown etc.
I see a lot of anger towards this. It didn't feel like he was trying to groove. It sounds more like an intro to the genre. Have people understand the sounds that's being done. Like someone said, it's only brushing the surface of go-go. I like it because the world can truly emerge themselves with go-go and start listening to those that cultivated the art.
What the gentrification??!!! Sorry sir, Go-Go is felt and you ain't feelin it. I guess now that Go-Go is finally documented as DC's official music and y'all already been trying to take the city from us it only makes sense that our music was next, smh! Thx for trying but learn the history and proper technique before attempting to teach others. #HeTriedIt #WeCantHaveNothing #DoingItAllWrong 🤦🏾♀️
JB Pride y’all already stole Rock ‘n Roll. You can’t have Go Go too. We can’t share anything with you people without y’all trying to steal it and cut us out. Don’t call me a racist for speaking the truth. Call me a student of history.
JB Pride it’s not racist, it’s called protective. You people have a history of stealing Black music and trying to control it. You’re not capable of enjoying Black culture without trying to steal it. Leave Go Go to us. Go learn how to play an accordion or something.
Still learning a lot about gogo, but from what i've seen nobody really plays like this anymore. Beat's gotta be a little slower and more swung. This is too much early 80s funk and not enough 90s hip-hop/r&n
Hey y'all this is just old school 80's Junkyard Band/ Rare Essence Type beats. This style died out in the 90's and beyond. This ain't a real pocket. Less is more , my brotha
He's also playing all of the percussion parts himself on the drums. No conga/timbale or cowbell player. Can't expect someone whowasn't raised in it to play it the same way someone who was. He did a great job on the early go - go style.
Having grown up going to Go-Go's this is the perfect introduction for people not familiar with the genre.
The drum culture is meant to spread out, thanks AFRIKA, thanks Haiti , Cuba, thanks New Orleans, thanks Stanton, all drummers who contributed something.
Thanks y’all, I’m glad y’all are digging this one

@Boyitellyouhwhat this is Funny but thank you JACK ASS......
It's pretty impressive
Pretty good a lot of drummers can’t catch the GOGO groove you held the whole percussion 🥁 line down by yourself 💯🥁

One of the best grooves
So great to hear this. we use to jam on car hoods all night long. of course we had our local go go flavor but we knew the source! Chuck Brown 🎉🎉🎉

I'd have to agree with what you said.

You got that homie !
Man, he just played three different percussion parts, drums, cow, and roller toms

Such a great groove and so many great variations. Thanks Stanton!
That’s a pretty good understanding and interpretation 👊🏽
Thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks! Great video!
Which drumheads are you using on those mini timbales?
I'ma lead get a keyboard player and a bass and y'all can catch us at the CFE 😂
Always great! Thank you again!!
Do it Stanton. My dog!!!!
Love what your doing🤟🏽
I’m gone slim, wtf yung😂😂😂😂
I knew this bull shit was going to happen when DC got gentrified. They stole Rock and Roll, so why wouldn’t they try to steal Go Go too?
Wtf is this bruh. There's no fucking way this nigga is giving go-go tutorials on RUclips 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@Boyitellyouhwhat thanks
👏🏾 Thanks for helping to spread the word on our sound . #SakiMarki
The more it spreads, the faster it'll be taken from you.
Fabulous! I wrote a song called Golden Highroad and I would like to put a Go Go beat to it !
Bro!!!!! Glad I found you! 😱😱😱
very helpful thank you!
This a 1988 pocket though, gotta find a recent one
Cool video though, glad more people accepting our music
What's "The Mr. Magic" bassline??? Help! Help me, Stanton!
Music Teacher Guy Grover Washington Jr.s song Mr. Magic. It’s a funk classic! ruclips.net/video/2Jvdy6khEmA/видео.html

Although I applaud the effort, the execution and explanation are way off. Coming from a drummer of 30 plus years in the genre.
Do you expect him to buss out some rare essance shit?
Same here Moe. It's always been kinda funny to me how the rest of the world hears go-go...

I must ask… are you referring to Stanton Moore when you say, “boiii”?

So you couldn’t find even ONE of the true go-go artists, BLACK artists, to come on, do this work and describe it authentically?! #COLONIALISM
You better go head on!!!! Whew that opening pocket!!
Here you go ruclips.net/video/7UV2csp9grQ/видео.html
And don't EVER try playing this if you don't have a cowbell (or 2!) in your kit!
