Buggy Bruh! I don’t think that I’ve ever wrote a post on any social media site but DAMN! Had to drop this on you and just say THANK YOU! Appreciate the love, history & bringing back cold memories... Born 1969 (Mississippi Ave. SE)
Wow! This was very instructional to me. There is a depth and variety to go_go percussion that I didn't comprehend. All I knew is that go_go is by default poly_rhythmic. So, big up to my cuz, Rob Allen in Richmond, VA ( geographically near to the orbit of DC ) for sharing this with me.
I so miss this guy. He is seriously one of my favorites. I remember meet his while I was working at a studio BYB practiced at, and Paul showed me how to make a bass drum thump. He's a really good guy. I miss you Buggs!
There is a band for everyone! Most bands play at venues in Suburban Maryland, a few in DC and a few in Northern Virginia. Just ask around or check out the bands IG pages and you'll find the next show. Enjoy!
Go-Go is sugar foot Ricky...Period. If you love go-go it’s beat with double beats (Thanks Ricky) with Smokey and Bear Valley Green.... nothing against the younger bands....but learn from the best. Remember when you learn the lesson..you can take the exam....learn that beat. Much love and respect DC

Buggy and Sauce Been dope a looong time. They are to Gogo what the Funk Brothers are to Motown, Jellybean Johnson and Sheila E. is to Hollyrock and Jabbo and Clyde are to James Brown Funk. I just hate that this clip is just now introducing them to many. I am from Birmingham, Al and went to my first Gogo in 86 when my uncle lived in SE DC and as a drummer I listen to gogo at some point EVERYDAY. Congrats to Buggy “The General” and Sauce.
you listen to this style everyday, please enlighten me as to as many examples as possible for my bass playing, i find it important to a certain project.
My dude..Paul, still doing the damn thing! Proud of you my friend, my brother, my former classmate..that's right...back to elementary school...MOTEN ELEMENTARY!! Lol!!! But you are right....GO-GO do need too Grow more than what we have..and had back in the day....Go-go, is powerful and it needs to grow. Chuck, ain't here no mo...so..Paul, keep doing what you doing bro, too keep GO-GO ALIVE!!!!
Come here cause I saw B Slade with a cover « Let Us Not Be Weary » and the people wrote « DC GO-Go ». I’m from Europe and this feeling is everything I was listening some years ago… Didn’t even know that the name was GOGO🤦🏾♂️ Thanks you! This feeling’s very important ! Thanks for this music!
@@terryhurts7172 Ahhh, ok understood ...interesting. Whole different vibe in DC than where I'm from in Texas. Very interesting. -much respect, educapro .
I'm glad Buggy played the bounce beat because years ago I was explaining to someone that Buggy was the 1st to play the bounce beat back in 98/99, even on skillet when he switches the beat its literally a bounce beat
I give credit to these guys for giving a history of the GOGO beat. But in reality it was created by the great drummer Harvey Mason on the tune "Mister Magic" by Grover Washington in 1975. The band "Ripple" 's song "I Don't Know" had the first GOGO feel to it in 1973. Also in DC b4 Ricky Wellman and the genre started there were great drummers in the 70's such as Raymond Calhoun (Gap Band), Mousey Thompson (James Brown), Keth Kilgo (Blackbyrds), Freddie Ross (Matadors), Bobby Wiggins (Shadows),Greg Holloway(Aretha Franklin), Warren Shad (Smoke) and many guys at Howard University and UDC. Those guys laid the foundation and deserve some credit for help shaping the DC sound.
The slightly older generation might argue Heavy One and Mickey were the best percussion due and true pioneers but with all music, its timeless and always evolving! I've been sharing this to everyone I know who hasn't seen it!
Marcus Wood yes i would argue that, Along with Mac Carey one of the original go go drummers. Mac played with the peace Makers.. trouble funk in their heyday and Chuck
This is infectious. Makes you instantly wanna move those hips and smile. I started listening to GoGo in the 80’s of course Da Butt & EU brought it to the forefront… but it left this white boy wanting more! I got into Rare Essence, Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers, etc. Even more, it’s inspired me to inject that funk or elements thereof into my own music. I write EDM and Pop. I’m a keyboardist of 44 years. But you cannot go wrong w GoGo. Hope to see a live band rock out some day (I’m in Raleigh NC) I’d just be too tempted to wanna join em and collaborate!
Buggy reminds me of my drum teacher at Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Mr. Thompson. Very eloquent with how he spoke to you as far as music theory. But when it's time to display his repetition at playing drums, it's a wrap!
I been watched this when I came out then. My guys have been doing this for 20+ So as BYB fanatic growing up and none bias fan. Biggie and Sauce are correct. BYB been playing many different styles and rhythms that why no one could really surpass them. If you think their playing. Go listen too... “BYB DopeJam 98” Version. They’ve done so much for GoGo and the vets before them.
Except the congas are played in half time and triplets instead of straight eights. The cowbell patterns are completely different. There are a lot of similarities though.

Dayvid Brooks I concur, I think Mac Carey was the best drummer in go-go and Sugar Foots my #2 choice. A lot of folks never heard of Mac.
Jeff and Sam was tough too!!! The water messed EVERYBODY up!!
