He was resetting the mic for the floor tom because it came loose during a previous pass. He might have swiped it (happens to drummers all the time), or the stage tech maybe just didn’t tighten the clamp enough.
9:43 I'm not a drummer but I imagine that's somewhat hard to do, timingwise...but that's just experience.
The way he saved the ending is what gives away the pro drummer ;)
I am a drummer, and that doesn't make you "pro drummer" (not saying he is not, which obviously is...) because it's only "cosmetics anyone can do" in terms of juggling. It's cool for the fans, but that's it...
It's somewhat difficult to do but it's just acrobatics and tricks mostly for the show. Chad is an amazing drummer of course, his long time carrer with RHCP proves it.

The funny thing is that, as an avid alt rock fan, when my high school thespian's club did our annual trip to LA to see some plays and go to the Groundlings theater, we saw Will, Chris Kattan and Cheri O'Teri perform at Groundlings in 1995 before they joined the SNL cast. So a few years later when I turned on SNL and they were all on it, I thought "No way the big dude who looks like Chad Smith is on SNL now!" Thought that from the second he walked on the Groundlings stage. What a treat to watch him perform before he became famous.
