I really hope you enjoy!!! Grab a backing track to you favorite Jam Blues and try spicing it up with this idea. It really enhanced my playing and I hope it does yours.
So, it is no secret that I love Jam Bands. Every Jam Band I know has some sort of Bluesy Song they play, and the lead guitarists always has a fast, flowing, addictive style that makes me always want more. After studying what they were doing, I realized, it is more about the placement of the rhythm than the notes at some very specific points. If you like this video and jam, then check out Possum by Phish. Any live version will do, you can hear Trey do this all the time.
Curious about my Patreon? Why do my Patrons Love it? It's different, It's great, and I know you'll love it too! Hundreds of Practice Sessions Waiting Just For You! Watch this video for more info: • Patreon Welcome

#Possum #JamBand #BluesGuitar
Seriously one of the best “tips” videos ever on RUclips! Never heard one other person point this out in my 10 years of playing! You are a great instructor!
Thanks Ray!
Same ! Ditto, ditto
DIT'TOOH !! '"😎 😄 😎'" !!
Between the "penta-blues-mixo-dorian" scale lesson and now this? Dude, it's like finding the Rosetta Stone of rock jamming. You deserve some kind of honorary teaching/music degree from whatever university you so choose, Sir Stich!!
I’ll take the degree from the Andrew Victoria School Of Awesomeness. Thanks so much for the kind words
I immediately heard Grateful Dead when you started to play. Will try out this lesson. Thanks Ian.
I heard Possum
@@faronsquare same thing lol
@@markkindermannart4028 Just goes to show that even though Jerry and Trey have their own distinctive sound, the concepts are very similar in both their playing..
Me 2...I was at garcies last show..he was jacked up tore up from the floor uo
✌💀👍🎸🎼🎶🎵🧠🌌♾❤🌹
I grew up with no other musicians where i play, so I’ve struggled to join along as an adult who has peers who grew up around other musicians. You truly helped me with this video, i appreciate it so much.
Thanks Stich! I'm a self taught Lap Steel player, on my journey to proficiency, currently in an intermediate stage. I play various tunings and I'm working hard to support my role of mostly lead in a blues band. Your lessons are so helpful to me especially when I strive to make my solos interesting. I think in intervals and spend lots of time "translating" when your guitar focused instructions understandably describe string and fret locations. Your energy and overall mindset reaches me and I just want to let you know, how I appreciate you.
Right there with you though I pretty much stick to open d
Cool... I'm right there with you. Just getting back to the lap. Had a great old Fender I got for helping clean out an attic. Couldn't afford it then or now but it's not about what you're playing with but can you play. Best always
Shalom!!!
@@jamesdinnel9828 the universe works in those ways you probably deserve that instrument an definitely appreciated it more than alot of ppl That can afford those kinda priced investments. Your definitely right about its not what u play on but what u play but when u can play an you get a high quality instrument it does make a difference 💯. I had when I was younger guitar's that were better than my ability I will say that they helped my playing or atleast creative side but nowadays I kinda like playing low end instrument its this odd thing I do but then I grab my babe an notice my playing improved alot from using low quality stuff cause you gotta really work to make it sound good. Idk just this thing I noticed about myself . Anyway keep on jamming music has done more for me in life "not financially" but in ever other aspect that truly matters than just about anything else. Music is such a amazing powerful thing
I play 3 string guitars. This is a great tip. I have started deleting videos for 6 string lately but glad I listened to this one. Great playing by the way.
Bruh.3 is a magic number.I have two bizarro 3 string basses and two 3 string guitars.I love E-E-E man...Same range as those cliched 6 bangers in standard tuning.Best fwends.
I love watching your videos! Your method of teaching is so natural, engaging, informative. great stuff that is much appreciated. THANK YOU.
Thanks, Ian. Always a good day when I get a new video. Great idea to improve any solo.
I LOVED the “Blatant Rhythm Change” words on the screen. They made me giggle! I do that occasionally but didn’t really know why mathematically. Now I’m doing it on purpose. Great tip! Great video! Keep’em comin!!
Nice video and good explanation. A lot guitarists (including me) kind of do that intrinsically, without realizing it. It makes it easier to utilize when its defined like this
Yes, I could clearly hear the rhythm change you pointed out in the examples. Thanks for highlighting. It does help one's playing.
I think I do this already a bit but wasn't conscious of it. This is a great lesson!
Always awesome to see more videos from you! Thank you for demystifying so much for us all.
"catching on again" this works not only amazingly for blues but for developing and adding progression in lots of music. I often do it every 2nd cycle for jams aswel just to add that that lil extra kick in the chord progression
Man, ive got to say, you are the best teacher on RUclips . God bless and keep up the amazing work
That's really useful - I hadn't realised, until I saw this video, but I actually do that when I solo Now I can pass it onto my students. Many thanks. : )
WHOA!!! ITS TOM SEGURA!!!
I noticed the same thing while watching Stevie Ray Vaughan. I hadn't really thought about it since. Thanks for the heads up!
Love the hashing #possum. I'm a longtime dead head that has recently dipped back into the Phish bowl. Love it. You are the best. Since I picked up guitar at 52 at the beginning of the pandemic, I have started a band playing all original music that I have learned from your videos and practice sessions.
Amazing to hear! So awesome
@StichMethod Guitar Thank you so much. The joy this has brought into my life can not be measured.
Jason, sorry to keep writing back but that really really means a lot man. It warms my heart to know that joy is being shared and had because of this thing I do and it really fills my sails.
WSP!!!
That's one of those things with which you go like 'oh my, it's so obvious, why didn't I ever come to the same conclusion?'
And then you realize that there were people out there who worked that stuff out on their own. That's why they are gods and we are mere mortals trying to get by on guitar.
Amazing video, cheers mate, thanks for the upload.
Major third flat 7 all day baby
♥️Good sound, great playin maan! I like it. Liked and subscribed! YEAH!! ✌️😁👍
Great easy tip! "rhythm" change is a major part of "feel" as is simple things like sliding into and off a beginning or ending note instead of "typing" - otherwise we'd all sound like a quantized TR-808 Bot. 🎸
Love you Stitch! Leaning back into the rig after a year of all acoustic playing. Going to catch up on some of your vids.
Thanks 👍🏻 I have been learning so much recently using your channel. Really appreciate these videos.
your videos are my favorite for when learning new guitar things
Finally you're back, we missed you!
Have you moved your guitar room? I noticed the Gretsch behind you for the first time
I did! Still sorting it out. Yup, that’s my trusty Gretsch you see there.
You make some awesome deductions from so many great songs about the how's and why's. Glad to see you getting a new video out! I was worried for a slight second! Movin across the country soon.. guitar's been in the garage for a month to get the house ready. Can't wait to sit down and get to work on it again. Thanks Stich!
Missed you, Stitch! Glad you’re back
Has a Dickey Betts sound too . Subscribed to your lessons been enjoying and learning. I have played for 43 years and am loving these lessons
hey ian , thx for your work
really helps us all
liked n subbed
That intro jam mixed with the beard and body type had my brain looking for a missing finger lolol
Ian - you were jamming! Really enjoyed the lesson! (and the soloing) Thank you!
Thank you for explaining (and showing) this so clearly. Makes total sense, and now I am adapting the patterns to my baritone ukulele :-D
just stumbled across this... like it. thanks.
Thank you so much for your time. I really love your lessons. You’ve definitely made me a better player … Thank you and stay well brother.
Retitled “how to JGB any jam”. Awesome video!! Thank you!!
I immediately heard smacky lips MCGee when I 1st watched the video. But what a great lesson
Cool tip, I’ll go try it right now. 👍
Thank you for all of your lessons. You are one of the great guitar teachers. This style of playing once seemed impossible to me but not anymore. That is a beautiful axe BTW.
Just tried it out. This is tiny - but huge! Thank you.. Again! :)
My nickname in college 😂
@@StichMethodGuitar hahah
came to this channel by chance. Very cool! I'm struggling really bad through the "intermediate hump" as I call it right now and stuff like this definitely helps me get through it!
Very kool lesson! BTW the guitar tone is RIDICULOUSLY AWESOME MATE! Is it the guitar or settings etc?
Ive been really liking your videos.... Ive been playing the better part of 35 years or so.. I can do all the fancy stuff from Randy Rhoads and EVH,,, love 80's hard rock and meta.... But when it comes to improvising,, I was just never that good.. I mean,,, Im ok,,, and to the untrained ear it sounds great,,, but to me,, It sounds like a cat being flushed down a toilet.. I want to take my improvising to the next level and these are some really great tips.. trying to hold that suspense and letting the tension build to the resolution is not as easy as it looks especially when you have a crowd staring at you.. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos..
Thanks! This is gold!
You’re my secret sauce Mr. Stich!!! Lots of love from Northlands Festival. Hope you’re well friend. Let’s catch up soon.
Dude!!!! I have been thinking of you lately…. I don’t have your phone number…. Traveled up to Keene in the summer. I hope you are doing amazing. Are you playing?
@@StichMethodGuitar you did?! What were you doing there? I’m Not playing as much as I’d like but will find the balance soon. Let’s catch up! I may still have your number but if not I’ll get you mine. ✌🏽

Bought an RV…. Just went around the country
Lol, listened to this lesson, next day on planet rock radio station they’re playing Status Quo, Roll Over Lay Down, and this technique is played to death all the way through, brilliant!
Man this and the Stevie video show how much simply thinking about rhythm can go
I'm super busy with must-do stuff right now, but it's driving me crazy that I have to wait to watch this. LOL
I was riding down the road one dayyyyy
Drivin down the road one day !
Drivin down the ro oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh ad!
Your channel is dope. Keep it up 👍
Loving it! Missed you StichMan!
Stich you're starting to look like Jerry! Thanks for all the help.
That's a very helpful tip. thanks!
Great lesson, thank you1
Cool idea! I recognize that technique now. I’ll try it.
Another lightbulb moment for me - thanks!
Great video man, thanks. Never thought about it it like that before, but ur totally right. Will check out ur patreon!
Hey Stich, great lesson. Thanks for posting !
Sounding like jerry Garcia. Keep it up dude
Nice Bro... Concise Direct and To The Point.. Yess That's Where it All Starts ☺😎💯
This guy is what you get when the alien's take DNA from Jerry Garcia Dickie Betts and Van gogh and splice it. Lol
Love his lessons. Years of messing around and now the guitar now makes sense
Now that’s a compliment! Glad you are enjoying the channel!
Awesome tip brother. Love it!
Makes perfect sense - Thanks!!
I love the sauce. You can’t have enough sauce
Ah Ha! You defined it so well.
This makes me want to jam over some Viola Lee Blues!
Garcia most likely invented this at least as far as 60s-70s Rock goes
Oooh, 😎 🎸 😎 ... NICE !!! 💪💪💪
Possum!
Possummmmmmmm!
I was riding down the road one day a ya
Armadillo ! ! !
.. Thank You for your insight.
Love it! I hope all is well man, miss you! Any chance of a workshop this year?
I love the Jazz trick of displacement. Gives you a lost in noteland sound. IE if you have |E7 | E7 | E7 | E7| A7 | Play over it as if it's | E7 |E7 | E7 | A7 | A7 |. It works and is rather disorienting, NOTE don't do this unless your band is hip to it!!!!
Top notch verry thanks
love that clean tone
Gotta love that secret sauce bro! mm mm MMMM :P
Really a Great Lesson Thx
I am 64 years old and your lessons have changed my playing so I wanted to say thanks. I saw your old lessons and I love your hair cut. If you wants to stop all the colds you may want to drink Emergen-C daily I have not had a cold for years. Sorry I sound like a gramma.
All non bias studies show zero correlation between vitamin C intake and resistance to a common cold.
You're probably doing something else that to reduce the instances..... Less contact with others via a different job.... more hand washing, better sleep, more balanced diet, etc
....... But, it's very very very unlikely that it's a vitamin C supplement.
YOU ~ ROCK ! !
Indeed, very much sounds like Possum. Good stuff!
Killer video! Thanks!
Hey Ian aka Stitch. I just got back into guitar a few months ago and I watch all your videos. You are one of the best out there and have really helped inspire my love of playing music. Thank you! Great lesson by the way.
Welcome back Ian
That B, G, A, E chord progression at the beggining gave mi instant Skyrim Dragonborn vibes, You sir just hit my nostalgia here haha. Which got me an idea: would You consider making some covers? I know that Your channel is strictly educational, but You could set up another one. I'm asking, because I am curious about Your way of reorganising/reharmonizing known songs.
Very cool great tips
Thanks as always!!!!!!
thanx master
Good stuff
I'm a simple man....I hear Possum, I click like.
Very useful tip for Phish type jam alongs
Excellent stuff.....sounds just like Garcia
Can you make an episode on playing the accompaniment rhythm section of your backing track.
I don’t really want to play lead my buddy has that part down.
Something like this?

Time to listen to “Mountain Jam”
I wish I could give three or four thumbs up. One just doesn't seem enough..
Wow. Amazing lesson. How long would it have taken me to not figure that out! Thank you.
Appreciate your videos! What is that guitar?
I just found this channel. By chance is this Jeff, the former Bearcat '71?
even more breakdown: if your phrasing is straight you play triplets the last line or if your phrasing is triplets you play straight time like 16th notes just before the change. climbing the ladder. melvin seals is a master of this on keyboards also. by the way you sound pro AF!
Nice job my man.
