Brian, 4+ish years ago, I was trying my best to do compound barbell movements in the gym, but I had no idea what I was doing (completely new to everything regarding strength training). The barbell row and the squat videos you made around that time were my introduction to your excellent channel! They helped my back pain and awful technique so much that I began seeking out your videos and have been a serious watcher of your input ever since. Thank you for all the work you put into your channel! I enjoy the direction your videos has taken recently, and have benefitted enormously from everything you've uploaded in the past. I swear by your theory of functional strength training to fellow grapplers I train with. Thanks man, always hope you're well!
@@BrianAlsruheOfficial You have the respect from all of us from only what we have seen on this RUclips channel, let alone what you have worked through off camera. I am both humbled and honored to learn from you. Thanks again.
I gave up on bent over rows a few months ago because the pain was stalling all my other training. I will study this video carefully. Thanks for the upload
What me helped to learn proper painfree barbel row, was to row from racks, so its basicily rowing from dead point. The main pros of it is the fact that after every rep, you need to setup and brace your core again, so it has good translation to other compound movements like deadlifts or squats, of course only if someone have problem with bracing and setup. You can adjust the rack height to point where you feel comfortable with lower back and do some kind of progreesion with lowering them(the racks) as the time goes and as you feel stronger, also you can prolonging the eccentrinc movement time, after some period of time you will probably be able to do proper barbel row without racks. That my tip for You all, and this really helped me with learning the bracing and to finally do barbel row painfree, which is my favourite back excecrise after pull up of course :D. Greetings from Poland Brian, love your channel!
Being over the middle of the foot! Thats what finally made it click for me, i can think back now to every time that i had my dumbells way out in front of me and I’d get halfway though my first set and have to stop due to lower back pain. Thanks for the clear explanation with plenty of different angled shots to help show :)
I suffer bulging disks and the disks hit the nerves. Along with sciatica shooting at times. I say this because I LOVE barbell rows and do them often. Good video and true. I usually stay 3-5 reps for about 10+ sets. I can’t hold my breath that long
Happy to see this, too many bench/squat/deadlift videos and not enough on the other lifts. Would love to see some more strongman implement technique vids!
Sir, these are some of the best cues I've seen people give reg. this group of exercises! I had never really understood some of the other cues/tips that people give to 'brace', but your video has really cleared up a lot of things for me! Thank you for this highly useful info (given in a very entertaining format :-) )! Stay safe!
Watched this to check my form. I'm doing them right! How'd that happen?? Lol Loved the last bushcraft vid. I was smiling watching it the whole way through :D
This is exactly the video I needed! I’ve been making great strength gains using the barbell row (advice from your other vids) but over the last month my lower back has been feeling pretty sore and tender after doing them. I’m going to get back at it and follow these tips.
Your videos have been absolutely formative for me. Your videos on form are absolutely the best on RUclips with no exception. Also your personality is so dope you're just a really nice person man thank you so much for all you do I mean it from the bottom of my heart thank you
Thank you Mr. Alsruhe. I love your attitude. I appreciate how you are trying to help people. Please keep a positive attitude, in spite of stupid and small hearted people. They ARE stupid, and they DO have small hearts, but they do NOT have to infect you. Love, and strength. ❤️
The breathing and bracing explanation was brilliant. I was just about to ask when ca you breathe in? Then he said it. 2 for the price of 1 with this video. Rowing form/back pain and breathing/ bracing. Or is that 4 for the price of 1?
Great video as always. Don't worry about taking so long making the cup. ive spent hours carving kuksa's and nearly every single one has split! It's a good, mindful de-stress hobby though.
very infornative. I can row 225lbs for reps and deadlift 495lbs for 2 reps no belt or straps. Granted i started doing deadlift just last year juneish. This really help me with my row form thanks man.
Spot on, this is exactly what I was missing. I did laugh tho, until i realised I look like that in the gym. Tough pill to swallow, but it is how it is. Big thanks!
I watched your breathing and bracing videos, and I thought I had it down. Then one day it just kicked in, you have to press down like you're taking a s***, against the belt. Instantly felt the difference and added pounds to all my lifts

I have seen so many row videos from you and still you come with new and valuable tips! You are smart as always and clearly explaining in your usual nice way! Thanks for the content!
Unbalanced hips is the reason for my slight pain. I have a torn meniscus in the left knee, i tend to lean more on my right leg to avoid the pain.. which then leads to more stress on that part of the lowerback/hip area.
Hi Brian, any tips for improving the clean of a log press? When i go heavy i end up using all my air having to clean the log and I struggle to get more in before I press it.
Great video! I used to have some low back pain on rows but that's not a problem anymore, much thanks to some of your earlier videos. The only thing keeping my rows from developing is my forearms. Grip strength isn't a problem but they start to burn like crazy after many reps. Is that just supposed to happen or am I doing something wrong?
Similar to this video, another more specific or “niche” video I’d love to see is a tips and tricks to specialty bars. Like mastering an Axle Deadlift or how to maintain grip on a Swiss Bar Bench Press.
Hey Brian any chance we could get a closer look at that barbell rack? I'm tryna build my own outta wood and yours looks custom. Awesome vid as always, btw. I'm rehabbing a back issue and I've laid off BB rows for a bit, I think I'm just about ready to work em back in.
already injured back with this row... prefer now incline bench support b.bell row.. still can feel the pain now and then after 1yr.. nothing more important than injury safe exercises..
Any thoughts on rounding the upper back and dipping the torso slightly down to touch the bar to your stomach? I always end up doing this when reps gets hard, but it seems more logical to keep the entire back neutral throughout. Great vids man much love
Hey Brian, I watched your old and your new gym tour video but you never mention what racks do you have. One question please, what Rogue racks do you have, what’s the name of the racks, from the one with the green pull-up bar and from the rack with the red rogue shield? Thank you very much Brian!!! Awesome video!
Never any lower back pain. Been able to row about the same as I bench without sacrificing my form much. I do however, get pain in my left trap/neck probably from either overhead press or barbell rows.
If u can do a row without your hands, then that's impressive. Do they use straps, and if so, how do they put their straps on? Am I the only one that needs more reference 😅

With the Barbell Row, do you focus the contraction in your lats for a simular feel to the pullup, or do you focus the strain more on the upper back muscles?
@@BR4INlessBRI4N Yeah I guess so. I've always pulled with my lats, but my upper back is lacking compared to my mid back so I think I'll swap to the other style for a year or so
Brian, What’s your thoughts with straps on barbell rows? I use it solely as an accessory lift, ergo focusing more on my back contractions. However, I’m not sure if I’m leaving gains on the table for using it as such. Thanks, man
Brian do you by any do single leg RDLs? ive been told time and time again that is the king stability excerise for the lower body and teach proper biomechanics in a single leg position that will carry over to squats and deads but for the life of me i cant keep my balance doing it without assistance
I’m not a master of single leg RDL but I find that focus in keeping your hips square and facing forward makes it a lot easier to balance. If I let my hip open up with the elevated foot, it’s very hard.
Sounds like your forearms are unbalanced. Start working on strengthening “opening” your hand instead of always closing it. You can use a bucket of rice or 1 billion gadgets sold online, but it should help the pain once you balance out the muscles.
