Signing Toasterhead aka Messier was THE worst signing in Canucks history, even worse than Erikson. The only good thing that came out of it was getting Bertuzzi from the Islanders in the Linden deal but that wasn't worth everything else. His buddy Keenan trashed the team. He was never invested in the city, lived in a hotel room to show that he had no intention of making it his home. He was never liked by the fans.

The "hate" for Fedorov by Wings fans while he was a Wing is definitely overblown. There were certainly factions that grumbled about him sitting out, but it was probably more common for people to think he was an elite player who deserved to get paid. If fan opinion on Fedorov qualified as hate, then you could say Yzerman was "hated" in the early '90s for allegedly not having the killer instinct to put the Wings over the top (a fairly common criticism he received, as crazy as it sounds in hindsight). Even this video completely breezes over '99-'03...because everything was peachy between Wings fans and Fedorov. And yes, Wings fans were pissed when he did eventually leave for Anaheim, and it was an overreaction, but, as with many cases in this video, that's hate from an opposing fanbase. He wasn't a Wing anymore.
And as many have said, hang out on Red Wings social media, and if Fedorov comes up, "91 belongs in the rafters" will be a sentiment that far outweighs any lingering saltiness over his departure.

    • @ElvishPrinceling

Yeah, the Fedorov one probably shouldn't be on this list. Most people, including wings fans, were on his side during his holdout. He was probably the best player in the NHL at the time and the wings didn't want to pay him.

I dunno. I was at The Joe when he came back a while after he left and the boos were still pretty loud every time the guy stepped on the ice. It was actually a bit embarrassing after a while. I was at Tiger Stadium when Lance Parrish came back in an Angels uniform and he got a standing ovation from the crowd. He hit a HR that day against us and the fans stood up again. As a Detroit fan who goes back to the days of #6 in right and Gordie skating along side Alex Delvecchio I do know this much. If you are loved by the fan base you will always be loved. But once you get on their bad side....not so much.

I’m a lifelong oiler fan and I lost a lot of respect for Messier after going to Van. I thought it was disgraceful of him to demand the numbered of a retired player who I believe was deceased (I could be wrong). The only good game he had as a Canuck was when he went up against the rangers. I also can’t believe that the organization treated Linden the way they did to make room for Messier. Taking the C away from Linden and giving it to Messier was awful. What a betrayal! The canucks came within one game of beating the Rangers for the cup. One game. You don’t rip your team apart an embarrass a great captain like Linden to make room for an old Messier. Sorry for the rant. I loved Mess as a kid. I thought he was so cool and so professional. For the Caps I would have to say Jagr. They signed him for a record amount (5 yr/55M I think) but he clearly skated at 80% his entire Caps career. The team was no better with him than without, evwn though they got Lang and completely tried to overhaul their scrappy, D first style. When they dumped him he immediately skated hard again for the Rangers. After a couple years of Jagr underperforming the Caps tanked in 2003-04 which put them in position to make a really good #1 pick in 2004...

Probably the best all-round player of his time (yeah, I know, Gretsky could light the lamp but Messier was the total package and he didn't need to carry McSorley around to protect him). I do get where bringing in Mike Keenan would f things up pretty good. One of my favorite hockey interviews was the one where Brett Hull was asked who he would be willing to fight. Hull, never known as a fighter, said Mike Kennan. The guy interviewing was taken back a bit. Messier complained to New York Ranger management in 1993 that he wasn't getting enough ice time, telling senior executives, 'We can't win with this guy (Roger Neilson).' Neilson liked to match his lines, something Messier didn't like, and Roger ended up getting fired. Keenan came in as coach, and the Rangers won the Cup in 1994. There it worked. Glenn Healey told this story a few years ago.
Messier going to the Canucks was obviously a bad fit, as was Mike Keenan. Pat Quinn said this about Mike Keenan: ' Mike Keenan couldn't draw up a play on the chalkboard if his life depended on it.' Keenan has won championships in junior, AHL, and NHL, however.

3:44 - Sergei Federov hated? I do not agree with that in the end of the day. Federov was back in the day one of the most tallented players in hockey and even Wayne Gretzky back in the day said after Mario Lemieux, his opinion was that Federov was the best forward in the league. Federov was a great 2-way center and could be just as good in defense as offense. The only time I remember he was dissliked was in 2003-2005 when he left the Red Wings for Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
That was understandble for the time being as he was a fan favourite beside Yzerman & Lidstrom. But years after, he regained that love & respect from Red Wings fans and I have not heard in many years anything negative about him from them.
Well, I'm a Ducks fan so I was happy he came but dissapointed he was not as good he was in Detroit. I imagined if Ducks had had him with Karya and Selanne, the Ducks would indeed have been the MIGHTY ones in the league. But that never happend sadly. I'm pretty sure he is STILL being paid by the Flyers. Also a Flyer that I hated was Forsberg. Don't get me wrong, when he was in the lineup he was great. He centered a line with Gange and Knuble, and at the time they were one of, if not the, best lines in the league. His "foot problems" started after he signed a big contract here the year after the lockout when the salary cap was introduced in the NHL. Because of this we had no money left for LeClair or Roenick. If his foot was a problem ok but he was out for a while until the league shut down for a few weeks for various players to compete for their countries in the Olympics. Forsberg came out of injury, played the ENTIRE tournament for Sweden, comes back for Philly and doesn't even finish the first game back for the Flyers and goes back to being "injured" for a while. When I hear the name Peter Forsberg, I always remember that and hate him for what he did, or really didn't do, for my Flyers.

It's really not Mark Messiers fault... Management / Ownership are the ones that allowed it to happen.... A player getting everything that he wants is exactly what they are trying to do. it's a job. They are going to ask for a LOT and management needs to negotiate down. Maybe they were chasing sweet sweet Lays Chip sponsorship? lol

Fedorov was my 2nd favorite player behind Yzerman growing up in the 90's. The fans suck. To this day, I can't stand a lot of the fans of my hometown Pens.

Yashin should have sucked it up and played. Considering he wanted to be paid in a contract year, he should have just played the last year and then he could leave in free agency. I guess he did get what he wanted after all. Thanks Milbury

Just wanted to concur with some of the other folks from the area that Federov was not "hated" here. His behavior was definitely question at times, as well as his overall commitment to the team. As I recall, he disappeared in the play offs his first few appearances, and after establishing himself as a great two way center- the poor immigrant kid from Russian now considered it more about him than the team. At least, that's how a lot of us felt and there are many examples to back it up. As good as he was, his attitude in his later years left a bad taste in some fans mouths. When you go to Wings games, of all people you see wearing jerseys with throw-back names on him, I can tell you his is among the more rarely seen- particularly when you consider his contributions. But saying he is hated here is bit strong.

I was never a Canucks fan, but started to support them when Messier joined the team. That would be a re-building season as the Canucks would move into their new digs at GM Place, they would get a new logo and new uniform. Former fan favourites like Linden either left or would be traded away shortly after. I saw it as a fresh start, and thought I’d give them a shot. It didn’t last too long.

Most of us have forgiven Fedorov, and I would say the majority at the time he left were not angry with *him* but with losing him.
Ofc, there will always be people who demand sacrificing everything to The Team, and people who just don't like the dude for being an arrogant superstar (he was! it's part of why some of us liked him 😅)

In regards to Messier, it is critical to point out that his declining numbers once arriving in Vancouver is a secondary if not tertiary issue. The way he divided and ultimately dismantled a once contending team, causing the fan favorites to be traded is the reason he is so hated in Vancouver.
The ONE and ONLY thing Messier did right in Vancouver, in my opinion, was insisting on the number 11. This idea of retiring number 11 in Vancouver is nothing more than superstitious nonsense! I wish more players would take the number 11 in Vancouver.

Plus nowadays Messier has the gall to re-write his tenure with the Canucks. He claims he was brought in to help mention a young squad... even though at the time the Canucks had: Pavel Bure, Alexander Mogilny, Trevor Linden, Kirk McLean (just a few years removed from his Hart and Vezina runner-up seasons), a young Markus Naslund, a rookie Mattias Ohlund, NHL veteran in Martin Gelinas, Brad May, Hedican, Aucoin, the "Wild Thing" Scotty Walker.... this was a contending team that Messier was supposed to help bring the Stanley Cup. Instead, he turned the arena into the "Pacific Mausoleum".
