    Todays Vlog has us clearing stumps and smoothing out the land. Restoring old pasture out in front of our temporary home! See how the process works and watch the heavy machinery as it pulls out stumps and gets ready for grass seed...I HOPE YA ENJOY!

    I recommend burning too. When I'm building a forestry road I don't even bury a stump. Those will be massive sink holes when all that debris breaks down.

    Wow $100 an hour is a steal around here for equipment of that size.

  • @tdgreenbay

    Josh.... when those Stumps rot you gonna have a gully again... rotted stumps take up less space and you have a hole again...

    With as much debris as you will have there I highly recommend burning. Those sinks will be massive in a few years.
    $1000 an acre seems high. I've hired dozer operators for $40/hour up at the farm in Stuart to clear trails. I need to stump about 3 acres but if $1000/acre is accurate, I'll put that project on hold.

      Wade EXACTLY. I live and work in The Bahamas and the cost's you named are the same here. Its $300 mobilizing fee and #250 an hour for excavator cat 320 size and $220 for 963 track loader. When i heard him say $100 and hour i wonder how is he the equipment owner making money. Operators here only make $15 an hour sadly

    Hey there Mr. Stoney ridge farmer. I really enjoy all of your videos. I am actually clearing off a farm right now that I had logged. Did the 963 pull up those stumps pretty easy? I know the excavator does it easier but I'm actually in the process of buying a 963. Thanks!

  • @ExtremeRC4x4

    I'd be interested in seeing how it would turn out if you had the area mostly logged of like you did but coming through with a skid steer and a forestry mulcher to grind in all the stumps and the remaining logs. It seems like they do a really nice job and can cut through some good size stumps, they also seem to clear areas at a good rate too. Interesting to watch either way though!

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks buddy....we will have a forestry mulcher out soon...these areas are just to darn rocky and gully washed to mulch...does seem like a waste just pushing the stumps over the hill

    Josh I had stumps buried about 8 years ago they rotted out and resulted in some minor sink holes that's why I'd suggest burning them in the gully then back fill. Either way good luck and best wishes, thanks for sharing.

      Eagle Camp Homestead SWFL I've had an old stump left for years. It's started to sink around it for the last few years. It's no fun to mow cuz you hit s low spot and slam into the hard edge of a stump.

    if you are planning on putting it back into pasture / grass why not just use a forestry mulcher then seed?

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  6 лет назад +1

      Well...that would be nice if the land was level and smooth...this area as with most of the Piedmont area in NC is very gully washed. I will have a forestry mulcher out soon to take care of some areas down near the creek where the land is flat and nice but this area is full of rocks and gullys

    • @whodat548
      @whodat548 6 лет назад +4

      I'm in the piedmont of NC as well. We cleared land like you are doing for years till we figured out that we don't have near the erosion, or destroy the soil structure near as bad by having it mulched. Having it stumped and cleared is like having a tornado hit your house. Takes the soil a long time to rebuild itself. You might want to try it and decide for yourself. Have you looked into trying any Silvio pasture?

    I'm in NE Texas and Texas is seeing a lot of new people moving in. They'll buy some wooded acreage,have it clear cut and get $300.00 to $400.00 an acre for the timber(pine and hardwood mix) THEN start looking into heavy equipment to clean up the mess. Down here because of the high clay soil post logging cleanup runs $1200.00 to $1500.00 an acre and that is for rough cleaning. Pasture planting ready adds another $500.00 an acre.

    Dude you can rent a D6 dozer and large excavator at 750.00/day or 2100.00 a week. So 2 pieces of equipment would cost you 4200.00 plus fuel that is 40 hrs of work.

    • @stevewright1945
      @stevewright1945 6 лет назад

      super6954 I don't disagree with what you are saying on time wise. The thing about equipment rental is you only pay on hrs used not days. You can keep a piece of equipment a month if you only used it 72hrs you only pay 3 day rental. But time is everything.

    • @AimZ2909
      @AimZ2909 6 лет назад +1

      Steve Wright not true , you pay for a rental as long as it's on your property , UNLESS you have made contact and informed them you no longer need it , but it maybe takes a couple days b4 its uplifted , machines sitting idle don't make money for rental company & they ain't. Cheap , were you from if that's what the can afford to do ??

    • @stevewright1945
      @stevewright1945 6 лет назад

      AimZ2909 man I have rented equipment for years I know exactly what I am saying. I have no idea where you are from but someone is ripping you off. Hawkins and Grave, Sunbelt, United Rental , Cat & James River John Deere charge on hrs used not on days you keep it. Our company rents equipment all the time from small light plants, hand tampers to wheel loaders and large excavators. I rented a D6 last fall for my property to cut a driveway and grade off for my house I'm building. So bud you are wrong the only thing about equipment rental is you have to purchase insurance to cover the cost of said piece of equipment. I used State Farm which is who I have for my personal property.

    • @upon1gsxr600
      @upon1gsxr600 6 лет назад

      Wish it worked like that in my neck of the woods. You rent a machine for a week and only put 8hours on it in that time and you will be charged for a week anyway. They say you should have planned it out better. I wish you were only charged for the hours you used. Hell if that was the case I would have one of everything just Incase I needed one or two days a month. Don’t believe me call some rental places in my area. We use United rental and Durant’s mostly. I’m in the Hudson valley area of New York.

    • @stevewright1945
      @stevewright1945 6 лет назад

      Heavy Equipment I guess because my company rents so much is why they charged me the way they did. I rented under company name but paid out of pocket. I had a d6 for 2 weeks and only paid 2 days rental on it.

    lots of money being spent there...i don;t understand...why not chainsaw all the trees (stumps flat to ground) in late October....cut and stack the wood....leave land as-is and let it go and grow into pasture land as-is. Stumps will decay out in 5 to 7 years. Cost: just chains-saw mixed gas and used motor oil for bar oil.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  4 года назад +2

      did the land look smooth? Do I want to wait 1/10th of my life for stumps to rot? Once grass sprouts ...well who needs a mower...I'll just go out with scissors right? Come on man...you gotta think bigger than that...this is pasture now and has a good stand of grass for the cattle to graze....takes money and equipment to clear land

    • @LarsonFamilyFarm-LLC
      @LarsonFamilyFarm-LLC 4 года назад

      @@StoneyRidgeFarmer there's no right or wrong answers based on individuals....I'm from the encampment that pulling up stumps is costly, worthless and senseless...as both the cattle and I won't be missing those little patches of missing grass where the stump is decaying in 7 "SHORT" years all while the cattle and missing trees will flatten out the land naturally anyway. I sleep well at night knowing my wealth is growing by NOT using expensive senseless worthless techniques touted by others that are there to rob me. I fixed my own septic line for $14. in one day...just me, by hand and a shovel (and i was over 50 at the time)...everyone wanted $15,000. to bring in heavy equipment. I'll say this my Father taught me well...you just don't need any heavy equipment 85% of the time. If you're building a stock tank for cattle sure bring in a dozer...just leave stumps in the ground to rot and let your money rise.
