Sorry, I’m a bit late on these. I’m at work, and I do these on my phone. Plus the new schedule change throws me off a bit.
Also, these time codes are good for this video. The ones in the description are for the video with the pre and post show.
Thanks a ton!
Thanks man
Thank you!!
The funniest part of this video is that Fran thought he was doing a top 5 video game controversies OF ALL TIME. And he still put his Mario kart double dash 7.9 review on the damn list. I'm dead
All Jared was really saying was that if Halo didn’t exist then shooters would have needed to diversify to find an audience instead of copying the biggest shooter in the world thereafter, reaching a more varied and “better” version today. Doesn’t seem to be a controversial opinion but more of an interesting alternate history argument.
Pretty much how I took it as well.
Same here
I'm agree with you, but I'm so glad Jared left KF
Am I missing something or did Jared's points go completely over heads here? He's not saying Halo is by any means bad (in fact, he says its brilliant in so many words a number of times) but he's saying that Halo essentially designed a template that shooter games have not simply emulated and never truly iterated on. Sure, they can feel good and play well (a la modern CoD or Destiny), but they do not do anything fundamentally different from their counterparts, minus some XP systems and the way the games feel (a la Halo does not play like CS Source). Doom to Goldeneye was a major change in how people conceptualized the way shooters were designed. Goldeneye to Halo had a similar jump. Since then, AAA shooters have been "stuck" in a specific design. Thats Jared's point. He doesn't say "Halo is bad," he's saying "Halo created a template for game designers to become complacent and make shooters that don't truly push the genre in new ways." He phrased it in a way that would be very controversial, hence everyone losing their shit. He generalized to get a rise out of people. But fundamentally, I think he makes a great case.
Judging by the comment section and some of how Andrea and Fran responded tells me that he absolutely went over people's heads somehow.
This.
I agree, and you said this in better words than I did. I don’t think anyone listened to his words. There’s a part of me that believes that Andrea and Fran’s fanboyism of Destiny made them rage.
Zach Mills You’re right. Jared is absolutely correct. Halo created a mold that games can’t seem to break away from. Half-Life is a good example of a pre Halo shooter, and it’s more interesting in just about every way.
I think they got it...they just disagree. I think both the rise of cover shooters and third person shooters all iterated on design and gameplay. It's just that Jared often just doesn't want to see the trees for the point he wants to make. I'd posit that Resident Evil 4 is the most important shooter for what it did to shooters, horror games (for better or worser) and adventure games on console.
Andrea buys horse armor confirmed
*EA Renee
Why is fran still not on the intro? you literally showed the intro with him on the 4.0 video.
OMEGALUL. Again? I've seen the video. Why do they hate me so much. :(
LMAO i love how everyone picked controversies that are already out there, except Jared just CREATING new ones. love it
It's interesting how Jared is out of touch with so many people.
Tim's controversial opinions sucked as they were super weak. Jared is just plain wrong but at least he came with the heat and made the topic way more interesting than Tim did.
@@TheFlash-rh2el hi troll. Must be lonely down there.
Jeff Caseres Jared is honestly the main reason I listen to Kinda Funny anymore.
YukarioMashimato he’s right though.
Andrea & others like to bring up the inflation argument, but conveniently ignore that wage growth has been stagnant for decades relative to inflation. So games haven't gotten 'cheaper' relative to how much people have earned .
Wage growth is a good point, but also more people are buying games. They make so much money on them. If games didn't make money, publishers wouldn't make games.
Also every company would raise prices if they thought it would make more money. They don’t because they know they’ll make the most money with $60 games and micro transactions and season passes. If the solution was as simple as raise price, the people at Activision paid enough to fund a game studio each would have figured it out.
100%
Damn, Andrea got super triggered... Totally agree with Jared on the Halo issue.
What's new? I mean really, if you don't share her opinion about something she gets really triggered. Go back and watch some of the Gamescast podcast she is on with Tim lol He didn't agree with her or goes against what she says, she blows up on him alot of the time.. Its honestly funny because it just shows how stupid she looks when someone doesn't agree with her views
@@nicd7158 totally agree. Usually I skip the entire episode if I see she's a guest or hosting. She likes pushing her agenda way to much. No one said anything to her about the microtransaction comment but she attacks Jared for his opinion. How she does not see the pure greed in microtransactions shows how totally disconnected she is from the gaming world.
I think RDR2 is absolutely designed to be played over months, and not in any speedy way.
The microtransaction conversation is not hard to understand. Most of the numbers are accessible. Look up how much EA and Activision make on their games. Sure MAYBE games cost too little at base cost. But that's completely unfounded. EA and Activision make more and more money on every game. There's only a problem when they don't. Destiny 2 and Black Ops 4 are example of that. These companies sell the same $60 millions of times. That make their cost back. It's in the math that they do. EA has even claimed that microtransactions don't really matter to them. DLC has existed for a while and season passes have always been $40-$50. That's a lot of money. This money and the money from microtransactions goes to the stock holders and back into the company. Games aren't too expensive to make because the Publishers make a fortune on them.
*RDR2 Spoilers* I think the complaints about Red Dead 2's epilogue are a bit overblown. To each his own, but if you play the sequence impatiently in an effort to get to the credits, then you're missing the impact of the story entirely.
Yes, there is a sequence where you go around and perform manual labor on a ranch. It's not supposed to be fun, but it drives the story forward (and the individual tasks do not take that long to perform). Also, weaved in between these "slog" missions are normal shootouts, chases, and bounty hunts that they failed to mention.
This is all done to directly expose you to the frustration John Marston is feeling. He is forcing himself to acclimate to the mundanity of normal life in order to do good by his family. The shootouts and other missions are there to continually taunt John and test his devotion to becoming a better man until he ultimately fails and Abigail leaves.
I found this to be particularly powerful as John then doubles down and continues his journey toward owning his own ranch and making an honest living, despite being alone. His perseverance through these events really resonated with me and I found the house-building sequence to be incredibly satisfying. And the moment you see Abigail and Jack in the distance, walking up to the house together, was extremely gratifying.
tl;dr Making the player trudge through some of the slower portions of the story only heightens the appreciation felt upon reaching the final goal.

A Tribecalledjoe jfc thank you lol
Thank you man
I don't like people who don't pay for most games saying they should be more expensive
I think Jared still buys a lot of his own games.
I can't stand people who play Red Dead 2 and don't understand the pace and reasoning behind the story. It was an absolute masterpiece that was clearly only made for certain gamers. I'm sorry Andrea and Fran, but RD2 deserves more than labeling it a slog.
Yep I'm 50.4% in and loving it. But it's what I expected
So I disagree with a lot of the controversy's posed on this episode however, I really liked the segment. It's people actually giving their opinions and it makes the show feel so much more real. Way to go guys and girl!
Watched this one live! Thank you Patreon! Great episode guys
On the controller discussion: have any of these folks played on an Xbox One Elite controller? Because the paddles are amazing
12:55 Weird disconnect for me: saying how 'boring/tedious' the RDR ending is to them, (John attempting to assimilate into a working class man)
Yet being excited about making cookies in destiny 2, a series who's story is still a complete mess and a game play loop that borders mundane.
destiny players are brainwashed. what hero will save them?
@@MikeSW I love bungie games, however they failed to deliver with destiny.
The Destiny Beta featured vehicle combat, (which some could argue was the back bone of Halo multiplayer.) Where did the vehicles go? Why no alien/covenant style weapons?
Outside of the fight in the shade spots near the SUN and the snowy beginning with trumpets the rest of the vanilla game was forgettable.
Destinys grind is the epitome of a slog. Ironic.
DestructableMe have you ever considered that people can have different taste in games ? Somebody can see the game as the most boring piece of super turd in the world, while other can see fun in a game like that.
@@TheDevilShades No shit Sherlock.
That’s interesting, I always felt bad for having RUclips red and not watching the ads but it’s good to know you guys are still being supported
I never comment, but I felt the need to say that having debates and 4 people on the show, take it to another level. The best part about discussing games is having fun arguments with your friends. I think the new vision on all of your shows is really paying off.
1:09:00 damn yall got modern warfare 4? damn yall get games early
40 minutes into the episode and we get to the topic haha. Great episode though!!
I forgot that Jared basically confirmed what we all actually knew about microtransactions in this episode.
Andrea and Fran were fantastic on the show together. Really enjoyed this.
Thanks!
The Halo take melted my face off
RDR2 feels last-gen in terms of how it controls and some of the gameplay design but it's next-gen in terms of its open-world, story, visuals, music and main protagonist. Still my GOTY.
@daine333 will do, thanks!
I completely agree. The controls are so dated. It feels like Rockstar just ported the controls from RDR1 to RDR2 with minimal improvements. GTA V controlled way better. No complaints there.
Well put that's exactly right
idk man the mission design is really lazy sometimes
I don't know man. I think it controls fine except when it's time to grab things because the character has to be pointing and faced in the right direction. Eventually you just get used to it. I tried playing the original RDR and I realized how much they improved the controls. They slowed it down so the character doesn't feel too loose with its movement.
I’ve missed the KF Morning Show, god was it nice to see Nick do an ad read. Thanks for that
Loved the bold controversies and opinions episode. Great content and great panel. Thanks!
I agree with Jared, maybe not for the exact same reasons. Halo’s success did bring a lot of copies of its formula. I was a console player who started with Xbox, and after years got bored of FPS.
Then I got a pc and played games like Half life, and realized that flow I think he’s talking about.
I think it’s kind of crappy the way they ganged up on him. I think the fact that that half of the panel are big Destiny players shows some possible bias in favor of Bungie.
Jared on the "Halo Effect" is like Jeff Goldblum arguing Chaos Theory in Jurassic Park... "You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you even knew what you had, you, uh, you patented it, and packaged it, and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now (pounds on the table) you're selling it, you wanna sell it. Well... " Great episode
I'll be honest... Haven't enjoyed much Gamecast in awhile, but this was a great episode. Here's to 2019! Great work, all.
I had no idea you could dim the Dualshock 4's light bar. Saves the battery a bit too.
1:03:40 WTF was that long stare at Andrea that Fran was doing? She wasn't even talking lol
"Playing the game longer" is a HORRIBLE priority to have as a designer.
This was a fantastic Gamescast! The show is at it's best when you throw out a topic that encourages discussion rather than going around the table asking people to share their experiences with specific games. Also Fran is awesome.
Jared's comment on shooters:
-Halo was so good it made shooters bad.....
-XP systems that made players play more is bad because they forced players to play more......isn't that good?
-Shooters all do the same thing which is shoot stuff.....Sorry I got nothin...
-Shooters that have big set pieces and explosions are bad .....because Michael Bay??
-Shooters are linear so they're bad....story??
His opinion matters on this because he secretly "loves" and "plays" shooters.....my brain hurts from this
Good episode. Would love to see this topic revisited!
I agree with Jared. The in-the-moment, "play-by-play" moments of shooters haven't changed that much since around Halo. Adding progression systems etc, doesn't add to the actual gameplay. I can think of two different innovations that have changed fps games since: a) the hero-shooter (i.e. not every player has the same kit / asymmetrical competition) and b) the battleroyale game mode (increased importance of survival altering the engagement between players).
The question is if you can blame Halo though. What if Halo Wars turned out to be the by-far best selling RTS in history, would that change how strategy games we're designed and played even on PC? Maybe...
The expression you were looking for is moment to moment gameplay
@@gunslingerplays Ah, yeah, thanks. I'm going to use the "english is not my native language" trap card on this one - even though that has nothing to do with it. ^_^
Man the CUH-ZCT2 revision does not get any credit for the vastly improved battery life over the original Dualshock 4. I can usually play for 10-12 hours before charging.
I feel like I'm watching Movie Fights at the end lol
Fran is an amazing addition to the show. Looking forward to the future!
I recently restarted XIII on Xbox One X (almost like a remaster) and it's incredible going back to such a linear game compared all the open world stuff nowadays.
Absolutely loved all the discussions. Only thing I would mention is that when you're just listening to audio then the 4 chairs talking over one another at the same time can get quite annoying. Other than that I'm loving the new content!
Red dead is a game journalists/media creators worst nightmare. The game is not made for people who need to play games fast, they want you to take your time
3rd take:
Unlike Jared, I’d say out-of-control development budgets are the reason for the $60 price point being tested to its limit.
Aries73 unless you want games to look like shit, they’re gonna continue to cost a lot to make.
MmmDoggy Games don’t have to run into 9-figures to be good. That is naked pandering to graphics whores and you know it.
From left to right: A smooth dude, a wise old man, a guy who is stoked about two EA games this year and a woman who is stoked about two EA games this year.
Are you a AAA shareholder Andrea? Lol, I’m joking of course but looking at how much a lot of studios are worth compared to roughly 14 years ago(when the price for games was set at $60) I think the audience growth has made up for cost per unit.
Not only has it made up for it, but publishers make insane amounts of money even before season passes and microtransactions.
@@YTwoKay microtransactions are one thing but season passes are selling less and less and less
The amount of people watching movies has increased. Ticket prices have gone up. The price for refreshments has gone up.
Man this episode is amazing kinda funny needs more balls to the wall episodes like this
The fact that Nick read the ads for gamescast had me dead hahaha
This was a good episode lol lets get some more game debates
Halo was the first popular multiplayer shooter on console. It spawned all these other console multiplayer shooters we now have today. PvP multiplayer fans should thank Halo, love it or hate it. Now, did Halo ruin shooters? The popularity of multiplayer may have ruined the single player campaigns for some franchises...but overall I think Halo actually benefited shooters.
And it did all that without online multiplayer
Um....GoldenEye 64 anyone???
Loved the topic for this video, great work KF crew! =)
Love when the conversation is heated!!
Tim preach about FFX laugh, i love you
Red dead 1 £39.99 Red dead 2 £59.99 what she talking about. Prices have gone up in the last 10 years.
Uk and Canada only
The fact that these guys refuse to admit that game prices have risen in other regions so that they can continue to push their corporate bullshit is actually infuriating.
@@idakev agreed! There's no place for microtansactions, accept free games. Micro transactions are killing innovation, these guys must be in bed with some publishers. Never liked this channel found myself here by accident. Won't be back anytime soon.
The most controversial statement in here is that "not everyone is owed the right to make art", and it totally flies under the radar. Holy shit what a bad take
Timestamps are completely wrong. Smash talk starts at like 32 mins.
Edit: ah I see you put the start at 22 mins, which is how much they're all off by.
I agree with Jared. Halo 2 defined what almost every other shooter would be from there on. Not that I think Halo shouldn't have even happened. It's super fun and addicting, but it's also the peak of what console shooters should be.
Jared with the Dark Souls lore call out! I was literally thinking the same thing when Andrea talked about lore. Nice work Jared I loved that!!!!! Also Fran, play the souls man!
Definitely thinkin on this. ;)
Loved having both Andrea and Fran in!
More people are buying games than they were two or three decades ago though, like by a lot so... these companies are making more even though the price has stayed the same for awhile.
These guys think Red Ded 2 is a slog? They've clearly never played Persona 5
I agree with Jared on the Halo controversy overall from a creative direction standpoint. I would love to see how shooters would be today without games like Halo and Modern warfare...
Imo if it's a full priced game with paid dlc, it shouldn't have microtransactions. If the game and/or dlc is free then sure, add microtransactions.
Games rose in price in the UK here. Games last gen used to be £40 max. Now, they are often between £48-£60 for regular editions so here they have gone up.
Fran's "hey best friends" = steve buschemi's "hey there fellow kids"
So I can't contact bungie maybe you all can, but the ghost should be able to display quest locations when pulled up where the HUD is turned off. The ghost is a navi and I think it's trash that when I turn off the HUD the ghost can't be used to navigate.
RDRII was near perfect. I had no problem with the game lasting longer with the epilogue because I didn't want it to end.
Marcus Brown glad u enjoyed it. No offense but I HATED IT with a passion so boring. Felt like I was on a leash the entire time.
Loved it, really broke down the life on a ranch, showcasing The world without bang bang mc shoot out.
Calming my son jack down after we we're attacked and killed some fellas will always stay with me
The epilogue was a victory lap for me. I wanted that ending for RDR, as John is still alive and making hay. We get that in the epilogue of RDR2.
@@sergiogarcia5593 Couldn't of worded it better.
After about half way through I started enjoying the boring gameplay(its my goty) what it does best I the world probably the most alive video game world I've experienced. But I can see its flaws(didn't like online, I'm currently playing through the game again lol)
Andrea predicting Stadia before it was announced and hearing Andrea say Fortnite's bubble is going to burst quickly despite it still being the biggest game on the planet is crazy to hear
Finally we got some FPS expertise on the gamescast post Colin era.
01:21:50
Got love the sincerity of Jared. I laughed out loud.
Boy, Andrea and Fran together made this a Destiny-cast. To hear them describe Red Dead as a slog then talk about grinding out cookie missions in Destiny without seeing the irony, brutal to listen to. And that nobody gets Jared's point is a crime. Even if you disagree with him, its a simple take. That Halo set a trend in the genre (which is absolutely did) and he thinks it's a bad trend. Simple.
This may have been my favorite Gamescast ever. I loved the controversial opinions!
I love Jared for his stance on Halo lol.
Most controversial decisions from kinda funny games: add Andrea Rene to a most controversial opinions conversation. She loves to not let people have controversial opinions
Risk their lives to make games? Did she really say that lol
Lol who's idea was it to discuss controversy with Jared and Andrea on the panel? Ya'll craycray!
you'd think Nick would read the script before trying to deliver an advert, lol!
Lots of the games that played into the Xbox "Exclusives" were available on steam and other PC stores such as Ori and Cuphead. Those are also games that can run pretty easily on laptops, taking that into account I'd say the Wii U's line up was definitely stronger than Xbox One's current line up.
Controversial statement: Socom II had a better online consule experience than Halo 2.
Note: Both were fantastic for the time. I like both.
Jared needed to give an example of a PC shooter that was better than Halo in the early 2000s. Where if Halo didn't exist, that shooter would have shaped the future of shooters instead. I get that gameplay wise most current shooters, besides counterstrike are Halo 1 at the core of their mechanics. But he offered no comparison to other shooters of that era that were different from Halo.
Unreal Tournament 2k3 is probably the example he would give as the last bastion of the PC shooter that he is a fan of. From then on the vehicles in every shooter meme of 2004 derailed those kinds of shooters. Im guessing thats his angle.
@@Nigerianbucket So true! totally forgot about that arena style. all i could think of was tactical team stuff.
Jared is right that Halo changed the shooter landscape forever. Halo 2 is more of the turning point imo as in the era of Halo 1, PC was still the only place to reliably play online shooters. Better or for worse is down to taste.
Does Tim play anything other than Wii and Switch games?
His game of the year is a PlayStation exclusive.
The timestamps are way off
I feel like game of the decade could also potentially be minecraft
If I got a $60 game for free like many of these influencers do, I'd be fine to support it with $60 worth of microtransactions.
My man TIM!!!! WTF?? In the trailer for Fran chair in the Gamescast line up we saw his character. Why is it not yet in the intro?? Get on it TIM!! AHAHA love you guys good show!!
Jared is out of his mind with that halo opinion it literally made shooters SO much better.
This was an amazing show! Tim was having so much fun stirring the pot and snarky as hell! Jared: "There's an argument that someone could easily make that the Japanese Sega Saturn controller is perfect" Tim: "No only you can"
Great crew!
Here’s my controversial Gaming Opinion: *Assassin’s Creed Unity is the Best AC Game since Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood.*
Now let’s get the obvious out the way, the game was a fucking *nightmare* at release. Glitches out the ass. But, I played the game last year since all the patches, and it’s great. The reason I say it’s the best since Brotherhood is for a few reasons.
1) Arno Dorian is a likeable and relatable protagonist, and had a clear and progressing character arc. In Unity’s campaign, he’s a boy trying to be a man, but by the end game events he’s become mature, jaded and dark, which we see in the Lost King’s DLC
2) The World itself is not just the most lively in all the AC games, but it’s one of the most lived in worlds of any Video Game. The streets of Paris are packed, and there’s always something going on and something to see.
3) The Gameplay itself and Mechanics are the *BEST* in any Assassin’s Creed Game to date. The parkour is wonderfully fluid, with a sense of actual weight and gravity. The Combat is challenging, and you can easily be killed if you’re not careful. It’s not a counter simulator like the older games, but it’s also not a hack and slash simulator like the recent games. It requires actual Skill.
4) The Mission Structure is GREAT. It’s very similar to a Hitman game, in that there is multiple ways to assassinate a target, adding to the replay value.
5) Character Customisation and Class build is awesome. You can be a stealthy Assassin, fighting from the shadows. Or, a hard hitting tank on a rampage.
I don’t know if this comment will pick up anybodies radar, but I’d be interested to know what others think.
B.Barnes WS Couldn’t agree more
i maybe remembering a alt universe but couldnt you paly mario kart dd online?
Kevin is insane. Can we get time codes for when Kevin laughs in the background?
This is a solid line up for Gamecast
I stand with Jared on Double Dash! It was amazing and I love the 2player coop!
There is no good reason for Microtransactions or even Lootboxes in my opinion. Even cosmetic Lootboxes. Look at a game like the Witcher 3, no rubbish practices, spent a lot of money to make the game. Included every standard copy with soundtrack, instruction manual and a thank you note for buying the game. The game was a resounding success due to its critical success and it actually had a very high pre-order rate because people felt they were treated fairly. It sold a lot and made them a lot of money, no microtransactions or lootboxes needed.
59:50 - Damn Jared how many times you need to look at Tim ??
Jared is right about shooters. I don't know if i would blame Halo necessarily. Back when i was a kid i was playing shooters like Hexen: Beyond Heretic, Duke Nukem 64, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter & Goldeneye 007. I assume that the people who are butthurt about his opinion have never played or even heard of those game, look them up. Every single one of those is interesting, non linear design who entice you to explore the world, fun, unique and with full of secrets. Goldenye 007 for exemple may require additional objectives like getting a key from a scientist to open a door, destroy every camera and alarm when you bump up the difficulty. Nowadays we get mostly linear single player shooter campaigns or MP shooters who all look pretty much the same.
Fantastic Show ... Fran is a perfect addition
Thankya, it's been fun so far even though they refuse to put me into the intro.
1:12:04 Jared totally dismissed fran's bullshit there lol. Love it
