      Skip and Shannon: UNDISPUTED no they don’t. If they sign Harper they don’t sign Corbin. He was a big part of the pitching which was Robs point of why they won but doesn’t realize he doesn’t go to DC if Harper resigns.

      @@adrianguzman2876 Agreed. Also, idk why Nats fan are still so angry at Harper leaving. Nats offered Bryce a contract that made him look elsewhere. Yea the total was $300 million but over $100 million of that was deferred with the final payment being 2052. I wish Rob Parker had brought up that point in this segment.
      Though I gotta give props to Nats for going out and getting the pitching they needed. Also, they did a fantastic job of developing their young players like Soto.
      I'm hoping my Phillies bounce back this year. JT Realmuto, Bryce Howard, and Aaron Nola are really looking like the stars of the team. Hopefully, Rhys Hoskins can start hitting a little better. I'm very optimistic about Joe Girardi as the manager.

Both heavy weights made a bad move and it cost them big. Not to take anything from the Nationals cause they deserve it. Again they played a smart chest game and made the rite moves. The Nationals had decent pitching when they reached the playoffs with Bryce Harper. Look at Bryce Harper and the team's batting average IN those playoffs. They failed because they couldnt hit, NOT because they couldnt pitch, in those playoffs. That was Harper's job. The money they saved on Harper and used elsewhere is precisely the reason the Nationals are champions. Anyone saying otherwise is simply dead wrong.

    Would the outcome have happened with Harper still in town. I think so if they would be able to sign Corbin as well. While I like Eaton and I like speedy guys, Harper is a better right fielder with a much stronger arm (he threw out Robels at 3rd from 310 feet away on the fly and Soto at home from 275-280 ft) and has higher offensive numbers and the same amount of stolen bases this year. Soto, Robles, Harper in same outfield......... However, with an already very high payroll, several key players coming up on free agency this year and next, and an aging roster keeping Harper was not a real option, which is why the Nationals went soft on their offers and had ridiculous deferment times of 23 years (1st offer) and 42 years (2nd offer). Harper did not leave for more money. He left because the team could not offer acceptable terms and we may see a repeat this year with Rendon. One of the reason for this? The Nats have around $500 million wrapped up in 3 pitchers. Of course, those 3 pitchers are a big reason they are hoisting the trophy!

    literally everything they're saying is what happened with the giants success as well. Bonds left in 2007, and 3 years later they win their first WS, because of good pitching and "timely hitting". as a giants fan, this Washington team's playoff run felt very similar to the giants WS runs (the team atmosphere, the peaking at the right time, to the pitching arsenal, to the timely hitting, etc) and on top of that the nationals were looking even better. once I saw how they played in game 7 against the dodgers, I knew they were gonna win it all. they just had "it".

    Your arguments about a star player helping a team individually advanced in the playoffs or even win a world championship is valid. But you're forgetting the most important trait of a player coming to a club or that can bring to a club and that is their personality. This affects teams in the way they play more than people think about. And sometimes getting rid of a player can lighten up the mood in a particular Clubhouse and those players will end up having more fun while they're playing. I think that is the case with the Nationals. All of the focus wasn't on Bryce Harper and his hair flips.

  • @georgehunt6381
    @georgehunt6381 4 года назад

    Pitching, pitching, pitching, it starts with pitching. About 90% of your defense is pitching. The Nats were 19-31 after 50 games mainly because of a horrible bullpin. The pitching did get better after Rizzo brought Hudson and Rodney in. After Doolittle came back from IR, Martinez finally had something to work with, slight as it might be, it was something. To show how thin it was, the starters were being used as relievers in the playoffs. Anyhow, it ultimately comes down to pitching. You can never have to much pitching. Yes, the team did hit, no. 2 in scoring runs, no.1 in the NL in stolen bases, I think in the top 5 in the NL in HR(s). This team is a good team. But, they need to bring Stras back and rebuild the bullpen. Keep Doos, Rainey, resign Hudson, go from there.

    I personally have an issue with the win stat for pitching because the vast majority of outcomes in a baseball game are inconsequential to head to head at bats. Likewise with the ERA stat as a relief pitcher. You pitch far less innings to which one earned run can heavily skew said statistic. There are numerous other statistics I believe should take precedent over those two stats for pitching.

    • @KM-je6bf
      @KM-je6bf 4 года назад

      I dont mind ERA for relievers because a lot of the runs they give up are inherited and dont even count against their ERA

      Middleton not only hired a player, he bought a brand. Interest in the Phillies was on the decline in both attendance and TV viewing. In one stoke, he improved both (keep in mind baseball is a business). And he got a right fielder who is in the running for a gold glove that gave the team 13 outfield assists along with 35 HR and 114 RBI. Now their ownership needs to plug the very glaring holes with the starting rotation and bullpen. Martinez (with his very masterful managing of the pitching staff) just proved you can win in the playoffs with a questionable bullpen, but the starting rotation is a must.

    2002 Barry Bonds was probably the closest a positional player can carry a franchise to a world series. The comparison for a pitcher would be Bob Gibson in 1968.

    The money the Nationals did not spend on Harper they, instead, spent on Patrick Corbin, Kurt Suzuki, Yan Gomes, Anibal Sanchez, and Brian Dozier. Corbin, Sanchez, and the two catchers made the difference. Furthermore, not signing Harper gave the Nats a position for Adam Eaton and for Victor Robles. With Harper in RF, then the Nats would have had to chose between Eaton and Robles in CF. The fielding was stronger with Eaton in RF, and Eaton contributes some hitting and base-running. It is not that the Nats improved when Harper signed with Philadelphia; rather, the Nats' general manager, Mike Rizzo, planned what the Nats would do if Harper left.
    Yes, there are many paths that the Nats could have taken but didn't. They traded Lucas Giolito to the White Sox for Eaton, expecting Eaton to be the CF and leadoff man. They might have kept Giolito, and, if they had accurately seen the future, might not have needed to sign Patrick Corbin. When they made the Giolito-for-Eaton trade, Giolito had had control problems, and seemed to have lost his fastball. The Nats were not sure that Victor Robles would become their CF of the future -- he was a 19 year old kid playing in A ball. Juan Soto was a 17-year-old in rookie ball. White Sox coaches must have fixed some issues that Giolito had, while Robles and Soto have been much better than most would have expected. Chicago and Washington both did well in that trade.
    That's baseball, as Gerardo Parra says.
