Can you please do a video on high protein diets? I'm considering eating 150+ grams of protein on my 16/8 IF days in order to curb hunger and not binge and regain fat from my 72hr fasts. But I've heard protein creates an insulin response, is that something I should be worried about?
Could you possibly do an analysis on the Phoenix Protocol ( August Dunning ) specifically Chapter 3 on water fasting. According to this book an extended water fast beyond a couple of days will result in heart muscle loss ! This sounds counter intuitive , how would we have survived in Hunter gatherer days if by drinking water while on a hunt ( and therefore not eating food ) the heart was destroyed. The medical information in Chapter 3 looks like it is well referenced to medical reports so not easily dismissed. Would appreciate an MD analysis thx

@@victorguani8799 I also do OMAD now. Plus, I try to get in a 3 day fast every month or 2 for anti-aging & to regenerate the immune system (according to research done by Dr. Valter Longo). In the past I did more long fasts, like up to a week, but I'm happy with OMAD & a 3 day fast when I feel like it
I started fasting just under a year ago. I primarily do ADF and go 36 hours before I eat for roughly 6-12 hours. I was 307 lbs when I started fasting and walking and I’m now between 195-205 depending on the day. I’ve started adding kettlebell workouts 3-4 days a week and I’ve seen a huge increase in my lean mass. Dr. Fung is the main reason I started fasting. Thank you.
I lost 70lbs doing exactly what you are saying. Once I added resistance training while fasting I put on lean muscle and it completely changed my physique. One of the best decisions I've ever made!
This is about where I am now. Weight from 239 to 170 through fasting and LCHF with minimal processed foods. Although I am still overweight, I'm concerned about losing too much without having built up muscle. And also, losing so much that I one day become underweight. So, I've started with light weights at home. Any advice?

Being jacked does bring credibility in the fitness and nurtrition space, especially among the bodybuilding bro community where I'm seeing a lot of attacks. Been intermittently fasting, nutritious food and exercising for a period. Lost 25Ibs, now with 6-pack. I’m almost 67 years old, with the build - so I am repeatedly told - of a fit man in his mid-20s. Went through a phase in my 40s-60s when I was much, much heavier, and unhealthy. It’s all about the Holy Trinity: 1. FASTING 2. DIET (eating green leafy and cruciferous vegetables, oily fish, avocado, raw nuts etc) 3. EXERCISE - especially resistance training. Get that into a daily routine and you will look better, feel better and most important of all be healthier. Never too late to start!

Thanks for posting this. It's important to note that Terry Crews has said he does 16:8 and works out in the morning. He then continues fasting after his workout until 2pm. This means that his body is still pumping out HGH while his muscles are recovering. I'd be interested in hearing more about the studies behind this.

This did not work for me. I got very limited muscle grow even when being a newbie. I started adding a little bit of sugars or carbs before workout and I grew in one month all I did not grow in 6 previous months. I think it has something to do with cortisol levels or something.
How perfect! I’m starting ADF with weight training. A beautiful friend who’s been weight lifting for years says that fasting and lifting don’t really go together, that lifting requires eating throughout every day to stay fueled and feed muscle growth. But I knew I could make it work, get all the benefits of fasting AND lose weight and build muscle. As long as I keep my feeding days high-protein and nutritionally dense. This doctor I think was talking about NOT loosing muscle, not about gaining muscle. We have fuel in our body for about 1 day as glycogen. But when fasting where we get protein which we need all the time for blood for example?! I think we need to eat protein every day for just not to lose muscle.

This message is so important. The first fasting I did was over 30 years ago but I stopped doing it because I was so afraid I would lose muscle! How I wish that I had know then what I do now, I would have been ripped that whole time.
I proved this is true for myself. I did my first 7-day water fast recently, at a point where my lifts were at their peak (bench, military press, lat pulls, etc). I lost 12 pounds during the fast. The first few days after the fast, I felt weak, of course, but within a week, I was right back at the same weights I was lifting and still about 7 pounds less bodyweight.
@@davidshillito I didn't eat anything for 7 days. It's pretty stressful on a body. At least that's my experience. If you don't feel any different after a 7-day fast, I envy you.

And fasting is the fastest way to loose muscle. Point blank period. It's got a ton of health benifits, but it's the absolute worst thing you can do if you want to build or maintain muscle mass. Intermittent fasting is much more doable, but still not ideal if building or maintaining muscle is a goal

I rather listen to Jason than to most fitness experts who say you shouldn't train fasted and you'll lose muscle. It makes sense that the body will preserve muscle as it has other sources of energy to use for function during times of not eating
I'm about to turn 34 and had done intermittent fasting maybe around 15 years ago... I liked it then but never knew HOW it worked or WHY. After a 7 year hiatus from fitness and I.F, I started the gym again but this time with more research and knowledge and a plan. I've been at the gym for about 1.5 years now starting with training 2 - 3 times a week for a year and only recently 6 days a week. I have always wondered why and how I could be building muscle even though I'm not having food or protein in my anabolic window after training and now I know why. I'm almost at the best shape I've ever been in my life. I'm close to a body builders physique and I couldn't be happier so far. Thanks Jason for explaining this it finally fills in the blanks as to what I've always wondered.

If you are doing a prolonged fast , how is your body going to repair muscle tissue when we aren’t consuming any protein ? This is what troubles me another doctor says you shouldn’t exercise.
Now age 47 and have been doing CR and IF (16/8) for around 6 months and working out fasted 3 mornings per week. Put on roughly 10-15 pounds, not around my belly. Was kinda surprised that I put on that much muscle mass while eating less then I used to.

@@tulio3571 brain fog comes from the low carbs . but if you do it long enough it will pass because your body will adapt to use keytones . but you dont have to fast and do low carb but it helps

He always has great materal. Iwatch him and dr. Berg as well as dr. Gillaspy. Dr. Fung has a nice sense of humor which is welcomed compared to some. I am day 9 of an extended fast. Early Feb i weighed in at 203 and this week I weighted in at 179.1 .... the journey continues as I learn to say bye to all forms of refined sugars.
How are you now? I also started losing weight in February but only discovered keto/IF in mid may. I was at 213 and i am now 180.2. Did you hit any plateaus along the way?

I have Weight training 5 to 6 times per week mostly before "Breaking FAST" each morning. In addition to my 16-8 Intermittent FASTING, I also include Prolonged Water Fasting (>36hrs) every 4 to 6 weeks. At the very end of those Prolonged Water FASTING, I usually take two Challenges which are Weighted Chin Up & Weighted Rings Dips. I've never got disappointed, cause I make my New personal Best every time with so-called empty stomach - in fact I'm not that hungry even though I have no food for 36+ hours.
I am doing fasted cross country skiing. Recently did 15km fasted no problem whatsoever. I lost 4kg and and I am the leanest I have been in years. HbA1C is 5% and aiming for sub 5% in a month.

The 2 studies you quoted. First study was targeting obese participants, which may not apply to patients who are lighter, as the health benefits of weight loss in obese patients are likely to be far higher. Second study actually showed that there is a loss of lean mass even in the fasting group, which contradicts your message saying fasting doesn't cause muscle mass loss.
Fung always targets obeses. Obeses are in protein sparing mode anyway, let's not fall for this trap. I.F. will burn your muscles if you don' take care.

I have done 7-day water fast 3 times and had great results. I struggled badly with headaches the first 2 times. The third time, I ate once a day (higher fat and minimal carbs from vegetables only) for 5 days prior to my 7-day water fast. I had no headaches, and the difficult first 3 days were not as much of a grind to get through. I think everyone should try a 7-day fast once in there life time to gain control over your mind. I am more patient (no snaking throughout the day) about food, and try to minimize the quick (unhealthy) food options. I now intermittent fast where I eat in a 2 hr window daily. If I have a social reason to indulge over the weekend, I will fast for 48 hrs prior to or after the indulgence. Then, go right back into my routine.

I'm 40 years old... and I have been living with food addiction my whole life. I couldn't stay hungry as I would get wind/gas trapped in my back which would cause me severe pain. I've been living with this problem since I was around 18 to 20 years old. This led me to food addiction. My whole life, I've been eating a heavy meal every 3 hours. If I'm awake till late, I would eat at night as well. Sweetcakes were my best friends. I would be eating cakes between my meals. And also, my aunt got an ulcer and I was told it was because she wasn't eating on time. A lot of more people had got some medical issues which they said was due to not eating on time. So, this back pain, the fright of ulcer(and probably other unknown medical issues), and the ghrelin hormone were the reasons that I always thought fasting would be dangerous. Maybe 2 times, I tried 16:8 intermittent fasting, but it turned out, I would eat a lot in my eating window and would still gain weight. But thanks mainly to Dr Fung followed by Dr Berg, I dared to try 4 days of fasting a few weeks ago. I consumed a lot of hot water, one multi-vitamin tablet per day, medicine for my gas accumulation in my back, and a cup of coffee with milk per day. This experience has changed my life. I still keep my medicine for trapped gas, but I feel I need it lesser, the more I get my stomach used to fasting. I can eat one meal per day, and I feel fine. And I'm losing weight. I will have to do at least 3-day fasting from time to time so that I don't get back to my food addiction. But so far, even if I think of cakes, when I eat them, I cannot enjoy them because my internal system has changed. I now can enjoy eating cucumber and oranges with salt. Before, these weren't considered as food to me. I still consume fast food frequently, and I'm still losing weight. Because I don't eat frequently...(If that makes sense)

Genuinely important to prioritise protein and resistance training if you do fasting for any length of time. Difficult for the body to absorb enough in a smaller window, just need to be mindful.
I just finished Dry fasting (No food+water) 24h + 48h of water fasting (no food) Lost 3kg in 3 days even tho it wasn't even a goal in the whole fasting. The body was doing great on day 0, and whole day 1 and two. The third one was a bit rough. Didn't lose any muscles during

I have around 30 lbs of fat that I want to get rid of, mostly belly fat. I recently started fasting 40-48-hours once a month, but I am going to change it to weekly. This video answered my question about maintaining my muscle, since I do weights a minimum of three times a week. I'm going to do more workout during fasting as well.

Fasting brought me back to 28 YO when I was looking like 45 YO actually I’m almost 40 and doing IF now 3 years. I thought I lost muscle too but the truth that was only fat around muscles
Love this...however if a person fasts and then goes for a long run, the body cannot convert fat fast enough to create energy. That is why runners hit the wall when glycogen is depleated.

I’m finding great muscle building amd fat loss with fasting from 2pm then training fasted at 6:30am the next morning then able to lower cortisol by eating pretty much after training .....till 2pm....I’ve also read studies where this works in better with the circadian rythm as you’re consuming most calories in the day earlier then fasting evening / night the way our bodies are designed , with restorative/ repair processes occuring at night in the absence of insulin .....my sleep has been much deeper and better quality since doing this too ......once a week I will have a carb only meal at around 5 or 6 to restore glycogen for training and the benefit is also serotonin for sleep , but I don’t eat anything after sunset and I’m finding it so much better in many ways !
The body use amino acid from muscles when you re fasting during neoglucogenosis, that's a fact. Glucose produce is used by glucose dependent organs such as brain. Thus, during fasting you use your glucose stock and fat stock, until a certain level of deprivation. Then your recycle your muscles.

On your up day do you just eat until satisfied? Do you track calories? I'm having issues trying to figure out how much to eat on up day

Been intermittently fasting, nutritious food and exercising for a period. Lost 25Ibs, now with 6-pack. I’m almost 67 years old, with the build - so I am repeatedly told - of a fit man in his mid-20s. Went through a phase in my 40s-60s when I was much, much heavier, and unhealthy.
It’s all about the Holy Trinity:
1. FASTING
2. DIET (eating green leafy and cruciferous vegetables, oily fish, avocado, raw nuts etc)
3. EXERCISE - especially resistance training.
Get that into a daily routine and you will look better, feel better and most important of all be healthier. Never too late to start!

He clarified in one video what dozens of fitness gurus have danced around conflicting “conclusions” about. 25 and have been intermittent fasting since I was 18/19. Perfect example of the difference between expertise and education.

It's important to note that Terry Crews has said he does 16:8 and works out in the morning. He then continues fasting after his workout until 2pm. This means that his body is still pumping out HGH while his muscles are recovering.

You might be interested in LeanGains by Martin Berkhan. Big fan of IF and quotes a lot of relevant studies on fasted training and different fasting + exercise protocols.

I water fasted for 18 days and almost immediately was back to lifting the same weight as before the fast so I don’t think I lost muscle 💪🏼

@Robin Sailo Not in my case, I guess I m use to it and the body is forced to use your own fat as energy this it sounds very good to me.
This did not work for me. I got very limited muscle grow even when being a newbie. I started adding a little bit of sugars or carbs before workout and I grew in one month all I did not grow in 6 previous months. I think it has something to do with cortisol levels or something.
How perfect! I’m starting ADF with weight training. A beautiful friend who’s been weight lifting for years says that fasting and lifting don’t really go together, that lifting requires eating throughout every day to stay fueled and feed muscle growth.
But I knew I could make it work, get all the benefits of fasting AND lose weight and build muscle. As long as I keep my feeding days high-protein and nutritionally dense. Appreciating this video and the comments.
This doctor I think was talking about NOT loosing muscle, not about gaining muscle. We have fuel in our body for about 1 day as glycogen. But when fasting where we get protein which we need all the time for blood for example?!

This message is so important. The first fasting I did was over 30 years ago but I stopped doing it because I was so afraid I would lose muscle! How I wish that I had know then what I do now, I would have been ripped that whole time.

I proved this is true for myself. I did my first 7-day water fast recently, at a point where my lifts were at their peak (bench, military press, lat pulls, etc). I lost 12 pounds during the fast. The first few days after the fast, I felt weak, of course, but within a week, I was right back at the same weights I was lifting and still about 7 pounds less bodyweight.

Studies are great, but most of the time they don't play out in real life. And fasting is the fastest way to loose muscle. Point blank period.
It's got a ton of health benifits, but it's the absolute worst thing you can do if you want to build or maintain muscle mass.

I gained 8 kg of muscle mass working out (weight lifting) fasted and eating twice a day. I eat no carbs only those coming from veggies.

I rather listen to Jason than to most fitness experts who say you shouldn't train fasted and you'll lose muscle. It makes sense that the body will preserve muscle as it has other sources of energy to use for function during times of not eating
I'm about to turn 34 and had done intermittent fasting maybe around 15 years ago... I liked it then but never knew HOW it worked or WHY. After a 7 year hiatus from fitness and I.F, I started the gym again but this time with more research and knowledge and a plan. I've been at the gym for about 1.5 years now starting with training 2 - 3 times a week for a year and only recently 6 days a week. I have always wondered why and how I could be building muscle even though I'm not having food or protein in my anabolic window after training and now I know why. I'm almost at the best shape I've ever been in my life. I'm close to a body builders physique and I couldn't be happier so far. Thanks Jason for explaining this it finally fills in the blanks as to what I've always wondered.

Day 7 on my 30 day pass. Muscle mass up .5 and minus 12.8 pounds of which 10 lbs is pure fat. FUNG FOREVER!
Now age 47 and have been doing CR and IF (16/8) for around 6 months and working out fasted 3 mornings per week. Put on roughly 10-15 pounds, not around my belly. Was kinda surprised that I put on that much muscle mass while eating less then I used to.
I was sceptical, but I thought I had nothing to loose, tried "everything" else.. Been doing intermittent fasting and OMAD for the first time. Lost 30lbs in 28 days, and I feel great.

@@tulio3571 brain fog comes from the low carbs . but if you do it long enough it will pass because your body will adapt to use keytones . but you dont have to fast and do low carb but it helps

He always has great materal. Iwatch him and dr. Berg as well as dr. Gillaspy. Dr. Fung has a nice sense of humor which is welcomed compared to some. I am day 9 of an extended fast. Early Feb i weighed in at 203 and this week I weighted in at 179.1 .... the journey continues as I learn to say bye to all forms of refined sugars.
How are you now? I also started losing weight in February but only discovered keto/IF in mid may.

I have Weight training 5 to 6 times per week mostly before "Breaking FAST" each morning.
In addition to my 16-8 Intermittent FASTING, I also include Prolonged Water Fasting (>36hrs) every 4 to 6 weeks.
At the very end of those Prolonged Water FASTING, I usually take two Challenges which are Weighted Chin Up & Weighted Rings Dips.
I've never got disappointed, cause I make my New personal Best every time with so-called empty stomach - in fact I'm not that hungry even though I have no food for 36+ hours.
I am doing fasted cross country skiing. Recently did 15km fasted no problem whatsoever. I lost 4kg and and I am the leanest I have been in years. HbA1C is 5% and aiming for sub 5% in a month.
Yep started fasting and lost 40lbs then, started a weight lifting regiment gaining 10lbs of muscle. Feel like I’m in better shape then I was at 30.

The 2 studies you quoted. First study was targeting obese participants, which may not apply to patients who are lighter, as the health benefits of weight loss in obese patients are likely to be far higher. Second study actually showed that there is a loss of lean mass even in the fasting group, which contradicts your message saying fasting doesn't cause muscle mass loss.
Fung always targets obeses. Obeses are in protein sparing mode anyway, let's not fall for this trap. I.F. will burn your muscles if you don' take care.
I've seen so many Dr. Fung videos that I must have heard the sofa analogy a hundred times.
If you've been storing up sofa analogies all this time would you suddenly chop it up and throw it on the fire and use an icebox analogy instead? No, of course not!
Finally. The real explanation to the whole thing. You are the best Dr. Fung
I have done 7-day water fast 3 times and had great results. I struggled badly with headaches the first 2 times. The third time, I ate once a day (higher fat and minimal carbs from vegetables only) for 5 days prior to my 7-day water fast. I had no headaches, and the difficult first 3 days were not as much of a grind to get through. I think everyone should try a 7-day fast once in there life time to gain control over your mind. I am more patient (no snaking throughout the day) about food, and try to minimize the quick (unhealthy) food options. I now intermittent fast where I eat in a 2 hr window daily. If I have a social reason to indulge over the weekend, I will fast for 48 hrs prior to or after the indulgence. Then, go right back into my routine.
Interesting input. I had never considered a 7 day fast. The most I could do was 3 days. lol
Right now I am on day 9 of an 11 day fast (I usually just fast every other day). Day 3 on has especially been really easy.

I'm 40 years old... and I have been living with food addiction my whole life. I couldn't stay hungry as I would get wind/gas trapped in my back which would cause me severe pain. I've been living with this problem since I was around 18 to 20 years old. This led me to food addiction. My whole life, I've been eating a heavy meal every 3 hours. If I'm awake till late, I would eat at night as well. Sweetcakes were my best friends. I would be eating cakes between my meals. And also, my aunt got an ulcer and I was told it was because she wasn't eating on time. A lot of more people had got some medical issues which they said was due to not eating on time.
So, this back pain, the fright of ulcer(and probably other unknown medical issues), and the ghrelin hormone were the reasons that I always thought fasting would be dangerous. Maybe 2 times, I tried 16:8 intermittent fasting, but it turned out, I would eat a lot in my eating window and would still gain weight.
But thanks mainly to Dr Fung followed by Dr Berg, I dared to try 4 days of fasting a few weeks ago. I consumed a lot of hot water, one multi-vitamin tablet per day, medicine for my gas accumulation in my back, and a cup of coffee with milk per day.
This experience has changed my life. I still keep my medicine for trapped gas, but I feel I need it lesser, the more I get my stomach used to fasting.
I can eat one meal per day, and I feel fine. And I'm losing weight. I will have to do at least 3-day fasting from time to time so that I don't get back to my food addiction. But so far, even if I think of cakes, when I eat them, I cannot enjoy them because my internal system has changed.
I now can enjoy eating cucumber and oranges with salt. Before, these weren't considered as food to me. I still consume fast food frequently, and I'm still losing weight. Because I don't eat frequently...(If that makes sense)

Genuinely important to prioritise protein and resistance training if you do fasting for any length of time. Difficult for the body to absorb enough in a smaller window, just need to be mindful.

I just finished Dry fasting (No food+water) 24h + 48h of water fasting (no food)
Lost 3kg in 3 days even tho it wasn't even a goal in the whole fasting. The body was doing great on day 0, and whole day 1 and two. The third one was a bit rough.

Fasting brought me back to 28 YO when I was looking like 45 YO actually I’m almost 40 and doing IF now 3 years. I thought I lost muscle too but the truth that was only fat around muscles
Love this...however if a person fasts and then goes for a long run, the body cannot convert fat fast enough to create energy. That is why runners hit the wall when glycogen is depleated.

I’m finding great muscle building amd fat loss with fasting from 2pm then training fasted at 6:30am the next morning then able to lower cortisol by eating pretty much after training .....till 2pm....I’ve also read studies where this works in better with the circadian rythm as you’re consuming most calories in the day earlier then fasting evening / night the way our bodies are designed , with restorative/ repair processes occuring at night in the absence of insulin .....my sleep has been much deeper and better quality since doing this too ......once a week I will have a carb only meal at around 5 or 6 to restore glycogen for training and the benefit is also serotonin for sleep , but I don’t eat anything after sunset and I’m finding it so much better in many ways !
