      What if your bodyfat is already low BEFORE the fast. I have done two separate 5 day fasts, in the first one, I was 20 lbs overweight but in the second I was maybe 3 lbs overweight. In the first fast I lost 8 lbs but in the second, I lost NO weight. Is it possible I was in starvation mode during the second fast?

    I reversed my diabetes 10 years ago by changing my lifestyle...eating healthy and staying active everyday. I started doing 24 hour fasts about a year ago...as I age, I don’t feel the need to eat everyday, my body doesn’t crave food at all. I usually fast 48 hours, have a day of eating, and resume again. I also don’t let it consume my life, if a friend invites me for lunch, I’m there! I just start all over when done. Lol! I’ve maintained my weight, my A1C stays at 5.5 (it was 12.8 ten years ago!) and I have so much energy and feel great, even through rotator cuff surgery. I believe that’s why I healed so quickly. I’ll be 60 in 2 years and looking forward to it! Fasting keeps me young!😉 and lastly, my doctor was fantastic when I was initially diagnosed. He believed in me and gave me a chance to reversed this on my own. He referred me to a registered dietitian and I educated myself. It can be done. Thank you, Dr Fung...I continue to learn so much with your videos! Thank you for all you do 😎

    The problem with calorie restricted diets, in many cases, is that they don't allow the insulin levels to come down enough for the body to access the fat reserves. They (referring to the people on the calorie restricted diet) are burning more calories than they are consuming, but they still don't have access to the stored energy, so something has to give. Thus the metabolic rate ends up being reduced. The key point continues to be bringing down chronically high insulin levels so that the body can access its fat reserves, and until the insulin comes down, the body will not go into a catabolic state, and no significant amounts of body fat will be consumed.

    • @JohnKowalskyDrive
      @JohnKowalskyDrive 3 года назад +5

      @@Gypsygirl9 Yeah in theory, but it's not that simple. For example if I wanna lose 2,5 lbs a week I have to eat ~1700 kcal a day. Spreading it out to 4 or 5 meals makes it almost impossible to go through a day for me. I'll be hangry all the time. Instead when I apply fasting, I go to work on an empty stomache, I usually don't get hungry at all, because I'm occupied with work. I eat a big meal at 12:30 ~800 kcal and then I go until evening and eat another big meal at 6:30 and I fast until the next day(18:6) that makes it alot easier to apply a calorie deficit. Of course it's all from my personal experience and it's not scientifc, just anecdote.
      Simple calorie counting + eating at random times doesn't work for me.(needs a lot more will power)
      There's something going on hormonally that I can't explain but I feel it.

      @@Gypsygirl9 This is exactly correct - in all these types of "diets" it is just framed differently so it becomes the new best approach. To add to Dr. Fong's statement, "It's not a race but a marathon". As you go through your journey of a low carb/fasting lifestyle, you'll find that you may platto. This is where periodic extended fasts can help. I also think these plattos can possibly be the body making use of the extra skin. The scale may not be moving much but you might notice your shape looking more cut and less wrinkles.

    • @nicoles5569
      @nicoles5569 3 года назад +2

      This is helpful, but how do you know if it's a plateau, or it's not working (like if the plateau has lasted a while ... are you still on a plateau, or is it time to switch things up?)

    • @howiesfunware
      @howiesfunware 3 года назад +11

      @@nicoles5569 The body always adapts because it's a survival mechanism so you should always change it up. Everyday I do an 8/16 or 6/18 by just skipping breakfast. I'll randomly skip lunch and do an OMAD and sometimes I'll fast over the weekend for a 48 hour fast. So keep changing it up and use extended fasts to help break through the platto. Perhaps pull back more on carbs and/or protein. Everyone's body is different so experiment to see what works for you. My wife's body has been extra stubborn so she skips two days a week (Monday & Thursday) to help keep her progress going. Also, be sure to get some exercise. By exercise I mean take a leisure walk or bike ride. If you're job requires you to sit for long periods of time, get up and walk around a bit through out the day. Use the farthest bathroom for your bathroom breaks, etc.

      He is wrong. It is a race. It has already been proven via the Matador study that your body starts reducing its metabolic rate as soon as 2 weeks after realizing your calories have reduced. Thus the key to losing is losing quickly and then taking a break.

    • @flipdiva0007
      @flipdiva0007 3 года назад +1

      @@CelineNoyce the MATADOR diet is basically saying the same thing. It only allows you calorie deprivation for a short time (2 weeks) then back to normal calories for 2 weeks. Then repeat. I have not planned to make drastic changes in what I ate, only in the timing, which did affect the amount. I fast 18 hours a day, 4-5 days per week. I know it’s not perfect, but this is what works for me. I found myself, on my fasting days, wanting to “make my calories count” and not eat many sweets, instead to have my calories be much more nutritious. It has had the unexpected result that I no longer crave ice cream, candy, etc. The cake I had at a graduation party was “too sweet”, and with my system unaccustomed to so much sugar, actually made me not feel well. Once you get past that your appetite decreases substantially and your energy levels increase dramatically. A dozen days into my latest fast and feeling quite good...may take it to 30 days. Start with shorter fasts and work your way up. Fasting also energizes the higher mind and cleanses the body tissues.

    Without you sharing this valuable knowledge and wisdom, I wouldn't lose the weight I lost now🥰
    From 63kg down to 57.9 in 2 months of IF, 18-6. I feel great but I had to recalibrate my calorie intake as I took too much deficit and suffered from low blood sugar which exacerbated my case of essential tremors, due as well to fatigue (overwork) and sleeplessness. I'm taking in more good fats and less protein now along with daily breathing exercises (courtesy of Wim Hof), which has greatly help my body heal fast. Taking some bullet coffee in the morning is really a great way to start a longer fast for me. I hope to reach my goal weight of 53-54kg soon and have even better health💕

    I would like to add: I do not fast for weight loss. Of course, I lose weight as a consequence, but weight loss is not my goal. My body more or less has found its natural weight balance. I eat between the hours of 6pm - 8pm. So one main home-cooked meal with all essential nutrients, and then an hour later I'll eat a small clean dessert, and of course one large cheeky glass of the obligatory cold Shiraz ; )

      Didn’t dr Fung said somewhere: drop the Shiraz, if you want full effect of IF. We ( my hubby and I) switched to Kombucha. Used to have liquid Resveratrol ( wine w/o alcohol), but it became $$$$. But we both are diabetics, and my husband had Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, so we don’t have any other option.

      Well, good luck to both you and your husband. The key is commitment and discipline! Like I said: I didn't adopt the fasting lifestyle for weight loss. I've been a sportsman all my life, and at different age stages of my life, I've adapted accordingly. Again, for the past 5 years, I've fasted for 22hours every day. And periodically I've done multi-day fasting, my longest was in September 2019 when I completed a 23-day water fast. I'm just about to eat one of my beautiful, and tasty home-cooked meals with my large glass of cold Shirazzzzzz ; ) Again, good luck to you both. Hop over to my channel, let me help you digest your food ; ) Leo

    Fasting or CR the way to avoid a reduction in metabolic rate / reset your set point, is to take breaks. It is the very way that we approach "losing weight" that causes the problem... doing the same thing for an extended period. I just lost 30 lbs really shaking my body up.. ADF, Keto, 18:6, etc. now I am taking a break so I can make that negative 30 lbs my new set point.

      i do this, will eat normally for a few days then fast a couple then one day i might eat twice my daily limit. Throws the brain off track that you are trying to lose weight

      Very good advice. I've been regularly doing some form of fasting for 2 years now, and I've found that it works really well to just listen to my body. We're on friendly terms now--I fast when I need to, and when my body is saying no, I call it off. I don't beat myself up when I quit a fast early because of headaches, stress, etc. Not saying I give in every time I want food, but we're more of a team now, instead of tyrant/slave. I do whatever feels right that week: 18-6, OMAD, or 1-3 day extended fasts. I'm loving the flexibility and mindfulness that's come from fasting, and it keeps things mixed up and interesting.

    Dr. Jason Fung, explains things in a way that is very easy to understand, but then, of course, we have to take that information and consistently put it into practice. Anyone can talk a good game, but can you then take those wise words and put them into action....that's the key!
    I've been fasting for about 5 years. So I daily fast with OMAD, and then periodically throughout the year, I'll do multiple day fasts, usually between 2 and 7-day fasts. My longest water fast was in September 2019, I completed 23 days. It was very tough but very beneficial. Do your own research before you attempt multi-day fasting. Thanks, Dr. Fung - Leo

      Not sure how you'd like me to respond to your comment!?! I'll just say, personally, If I decide to complete a multi-day fast, then I complete the fast, no excuses.....but we're all different!
      It's actually not necessary to complete such a long fast anyway. I'll never do another 23-day fast again. My advice to you for weight loss would be, fast 20 hours every day (So that means not spiking your insulin what-so-ever until the eating window. I actually fast 22 hours daily, 365 days a year, NO EXCUSES!) So liquid in the fasting period should be water and tea or coffee without milk. Then periodically try a 3 to 5 day fast. This consistency and duration are perfect. I have never been overweight in my life. I use fasting as my discipline for a healthy lifestyle. Good luck, and finally, I repeat, don't make excuses....if you decide to complete a fast then complete it. If you look for a way out of it, then you're instilling poor discipline in yourself for future potential challenges. Head over to my channel when you have time - Leo
