how do we address constipation arising out of these fasting mimicking diet or even fasting? for piles and fissure patients whose fissure opens up with constipation?

Now August I am now at 204 lbs. and my goal of 190 is well within sight. All due to OMAD and your marvelous advice. Life is good!

I am a slow learner, but possibly in denial, and up to now have been sugar addicted mostly of my life. Thanks to listening to the podcasts by Jason Feng, i am finally understanding what i have to do to get healthy. When i talked to my doctor about Jason Feng and his take on diabetes, she was very dismissive. Not very encouraging. My doctor told me she would prescribe me Oxempic. (Sic) weight loss drug. I said no thank you. She wrote in her notes, i had refused her advice. Also stopped taking the statins she wanted me to take., i feel very alone apart from my writing on this comment page. I have lost some weight (from 90kg to 80kg in the last year) and my BP has come down. I wish i could change doctors, but that is nearly impossible where i live due to doctors shortage. Regardless, i will carry on trying, and motivate myself to not eat sugar….
You're exactly where you need to be on your life's journey. Slow learner or not, you're taking the right steps for a better health and taking back control over your health and body. Listen to your body/intuition/higher self and trust that it will guide you into making better decisions. Your doctor doesn't know what's best for you, he/she has been taught how/when to prescribe pharm medication, not how to heal their patients. They make money from prescriptions and pharma makes profits. Once you are more in tune with your body and it starts healing, you will not need your pill prescribing doctor anymore (unless for emergencies). It is sad that we now live in a world where most people's main motivation is money and not doing what is right.
Im also a huge fan of dr fung and found that Mindy Pelz has very sound advice too. She's like a friend telling you dr fungs advice in her own words and always says 'we're a community here' (youtube) . so maybe youll find some support there. All the best!

I'm so thankful I found Dr Fung's interviews, lectures and books almost four years ago. I was such a mess, almost 300lbs, severe osteoarthritis pain, 2:03 couldn't walk, asthma, high blood pressure . Dr Fung, I started following your channel over3 years ago. My A1C atthetime was 6.1 (pre-diabetic) per my Dr. I started fasting eating once a day for a period of 1 Hr. I have been following this regimen since Dec 10. 2021 so close to three years. Easiest thing I have ever done. My weight dropped from 276 lbs to 195 lbs and my Last doc appt my A1Cwas 4.1. What is so special about Fung's advice? There were no local doctors or dieticians who had told you to eat less, exercise more, and avoid junk food? It's hard for me to believe that none of those things work, and that IF is an obese person's savior.
Not only does fasting for 24h reduce your insulin to 40% of your starting value, but fat instead of carbs in your meals greatly reduces insulin spikes so the fewer meals you have and the less carbs in each meal the more quickly you can get your blood sugar down. However when you fast 36-96h not only does it not slow metabolism and not lose muscle but this will cause liver fat to be the first fat lost because when fasting it is the liver that creates blood glucose and it uses fat to do so. This is also why unhealthy people get such a strong dawn effect this is your liver shooting glucose out into the body due to excess liver fat. The many benefits of occasional extended fasting and lowering dietary carbs: Your body recycles up to 1/3 of all immune cells in a 72h fast, rejuvenating your immune system. This helps with autoimmune disease, cancers and cytokine storm. Reduces B cells by over half in a single fast, greatly reducing allergic and other autoimmune responses. Fasting and low carb help with POTS, which is driven by high insulin and blood sugar. Clots and plaques are removed over time due to accelerated phagocytosis. Fibrosis aka scarring is reversed over time, including in the heart, lungs and clots. Clotting and fibrin are inhibited, stopping any 'unusual' clots. Fasting quickly lowers blood pressure levels. The hunger hormone ghrelin also lowers with extended fasting and rises from dieting. Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of proteins, pathogens and plaques by macrophages and other immune bodies. This will remove spikes quicker, whether natural or unnatural in origin! Blood sugar and insulin are lowered when fasting, reducing inflammation and allowing the immune bodies to move freely through the body. T cells are cruciall in fighting cancer, autoimmune disease and infection. Tthymus generally stops making them with age but fasting releases stem cells, which then can become new T cells. It also releases growth hormone, which regenerates the thymus! When insulin is high, vit D stays locked in the blood cells but fasting quickly lowers it. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased as fasting improves metabolic health, and D in turn increases autophagy. Your brain prefers to burn ketones at a rate of around 2.5 to 1 when equally available to glucose. Except for brief periods of very intense exercise, your body mainly burns free fatty acids. Fasting increases anti-aging Yamanaka factors and increases average telomere length in stem cell pools. Reflexes and short term memory are increased. Fasts from 36-96 h increase metabolic rate due to norepinephrine release!. Fasting increases interferon, which shuts down the ability of viruses to replicate. Fasting does not reduce testosterone over time. It raises it when the fast is broken by increasing lutenizing hormone. It also increases insulin sensitivity, which helps with muscle building. And removes fat, which also increases estrogen in men. Fasting activates autophagy (literally self eating). This recycles damaged proteins and foreign matter such as viruses. Lowering insulin via fasting virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. Fasting can help with MS, Depression, BPD, Autism and seizures. Weight loss from daily caloric restriction has 1/4 to 1/3 of the weight lost as lean tissue while many studies show fat loss from 36 h fasts without losing any lean tissue! It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mtDNA. Mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism, fighting infection and cancer prevention! 24h of fasting reduces leptin levels by half! This reduces leptin resistance, which impairs immune function. Fasting restores NAD+, reduces NADH and increases nitric oxide release to open blood vessels. Over time fasting normalizes stomach acid levels and during the fast acid levels go down to allow for the healing of ulcers. Fasting reduces pain and anxiety by stimulating the endocannabinoid system, just like the effect of CBD oil The obese will lose loose skin while fasting, but the frail will have increased growth hormone release, which helps to make more lean tissue and reduce frailness. When not in ketosis, the brain can only burn glucose, which produces a great deal of damaging ROS the brain has to deal with. Fasts of 36-96 will not affect short term female fertility or affect menstrual cycle. They also may increase long term fertility for some women. Fasting releases BDNF and NGF in the blood, creating new nerve and brain cell growth. This helps a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers. Fasting stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells, destroying them. Senescent cells are responsible for many of the effects of aging and are a root cause of the development of cancer. Glycine and trimethylglycine (TMG) can also be useful supplements while fasting that won't break ketosis and have many benefits. A fasting mimicking diet for 3-5 days in a row provides many of the same benefits as water fasting. FMD has about 200-800 calories, under 18 g of protein and zero net carbs. What breaks a fast? Anything with protein or carbohydrates in it will break a fast but most teas and herbs are OK. Supplements and meds usually break ketosis due to fillers or directly. Some of them also irritate the stomach. Many meds are dangerous to take while fasting. Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. They also help with dementia and many other issues even if you take them while not fasting! Children, expecting or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors that excrete insulin or certain rare forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all or only with doctor supervision. T1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis and done under doctor supervision. Not entirely correct. The liver does not primarily use its own stored fat for gluconeogenesis. The liver’s fat stores are mainly used for energy production or as precursors for ketone body synthesis during fasting or ketosis. Glycerol from adipose tissue lipolysis is a significant contributor to gluconeogenesis in the liver.
Liver fat is what produce’s the triglycerides in serum. Check Lustig and liver glycogen is used for glucose as energy and yes liver uses it up hence dawn effect amplifies for diabetics. Your visceral fat is the ketone producer
I have been following the fasting lifestyle for over 2 years now, I eat lower carbs and sugar. You know how people meal prep for dinners? I dessert prep! I always have some low sugar o sugar options stocked in my freezer (cookies and muffins mostly-they're easy and you can make a lot of them at a time!) I fast about 19-22 hours every day and have lost 60 LBS and kept it off! Not only that, I am no longer PRE-DIABETIC, my plantar fasciitis went away, I not longer have acid reflux, my thyroid is back down to normal range and my joints don't hurt anymore! Fasting is LIFE. 😀
@@lynnpep6962 Google! Just think of the foods you normally eat, then type in Keto in front of it. I do NOT follow the Keto lifestyle but it teaches you to cut down on sugar. I have a binder full of recipes and always have the ingredients on hand. This is the only method in my life that has ever worked for me. Oh, and I never exercise!
I went from an A1C 9.1 to A1C 5.6 it took 3yrs..by just cutting out sugar and lots of exercise..now im looking into a diet to improve my numbers even more

Thank you so much Dr. Fung. I discovered your channel at the end of May this year. I had the CABG bypass surgery last October. Before the surgery, I was non-diabetic. During every year annual body checks. my family doctor collected the blood samples himself, sent to a lab in which I have no idea of the lab. He phoned me the test results, but never in details. Every year he told me no diabetes, but I have to monitor closely the blood sugar because my mom has serious diabetes. In the hospital discharge report, it states I am non-diabetic. After the surgery, the cardiac surgeon prescribed me Atorvastatin 80 mg daily dose. I completely changed my diet, no processed food, no burger, fries, pizza, ice cream, cheesecake etc. After three months, the cardiologist halved the Atorvastatin dosage from 80 mg to 40 mg. Meanwhile, the cardiologist asked me to go for a blood test. It was done at Dynacare. This is the first time I can read my report in details. I can do my own studies what the data about. The HB A1C was 5.9. In the report, it states if a person HB A1C is between 6 and 6.4, it is classified to be pre-diabetes. So I was classified as non-diabetic. After I had fully recovered, I resumed my daily one hour gym every morning. I do one hour of elliptical which is my exercise to keep fit. Three months later, I had another blood test. This test had more things, including cholesterol, triglycerides, Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), etc. The HB A1C had elevated to 6.3, and the ALT had elevated to 132, way beyond the threshold level of 46. I started worrying, asking why. The cardiologist did not have time to see me, as such, I did my own research. I suspected it may be the side effect of the high dosage of the Atorvastatin. I consulted my new family doctor (The original one has retired). He halved the Atorvastatin from 40 mg to 20 mg, asked me to do an abdominal ultrasound to see if there is NAFLD, in addition, take another blood test on the ALT a week later. The result was encouraging, the ALT had fallen to 93, proving my hypothesis of the side effect is correct. I found your channel at the end of May. I learned how to prevent having types two diabetes. I started intermittent fasting by skipping lunch. I have breakfast around 5:15 am daily, dinner around 6:15 pm. It proved intermittent fasting work effectively to lose weight faster. Since then, I lost over ten pounds in two months. Last Friday, I had the blood test, I am delighted to see the HB A1C has fallen back to 5.9, the ALT has fallen to 53. Other than that, the HDL, and the triglycerides are all improved. The LDL only elevated slightly from the previous reading of 1.27 to 1.35. Yes, intermittent fasting works. I look forward to another fall in HB A1C in the blood test three months from now. 😄

I took the pill and fasting route beginning last year and in Feb this year, I'm totally off all pills. Now on IF 16 to 18 hours a day, less rice and noodles replaced by cauliflowers, broccoli and beans. Thank you from Singapore! You need to come here to convince our government doctors.
Recently i have started eating mix flour contend flex seeds flour, pearl millet flour, barley flour , wheat flour . Does this mix flour is low carb or high carb .?
I reversed my Type 2 on the carnivore diet in less than four months. During that time I did a two week water fast and at the end of month five I'm halfway through a second two week water fast. Primary reason for the fasts were weight loss. I started out at 360lbs and am now down to 299lbs. I eliminated two diabetes medications and two blood pressure medications from my life. I'd give it a try if all else has failed.
@@terseandtiny1746 the human brain thrives on fat and a high sugar/carb diet will not improve insulin resistance. Clearly, the high fat low carb approach is superior for improving metabolic health and reversing chronic conditions like diabetes and dementia (often referred to as T3 diabetes).
What proof do you have of reversing your type II diabetes? Have you drank a glass of orange juice or a bowl of rice or gone back on a normal diet with carbs (Carnivores eat all the animal fur included, humans aren't meant to be carnivores and the diet has been shown to induce dyshyperlipidemia which means you're on the road to a full STEMI one day, but at least you don't have diabetes I guess) without spiking your blood sugar levels as you once did? Treating isn't not curing. I doubt the beta cells in your pancreas have regenerated, in fact high protein diets are shown to damage them. I bet you've actually progressed your diabetes.
I purchased "The diabetes Code" on ebay years ago but I never seemed to have time to open it up and read it. About one year after being diagnosed with diabetes2, I remembered fishing it out of my unread books pile and finally found time to read it. I told my primary doctor I was going to try the fasting, he just shook his head and smiled. He told me that he and I would be going on a long journey together (he assumed the book was just another "Fad" going on out there?). 6 weeks on Omad cut sugar, carbs, starch, went 90% carnivore + dairy, some veggies for fiber, vitamins and suppliments. Went from 123kg to 103kg, blood sugar normalized, my 6pack is almost back, I feel great.
The times I have achieved to fast, I have felt amazing, more stable emotionally. However I am suffering from an anxiety disorder (binge-eating), and my mind feels in danger every time I attempt to go back to fasting (not to binge, just to stop the fast). I would love to have the insight of someone on my situation, I truly believe part of my healing process will be intermitent fasting.
If beginning a fast causes you anxiety, take a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil before you go to bed and again when you wake up. Periodically take the coconut oil until you feel in control to begin your fasting in earnest. It’s also okay to continue to take it during the fast. Coconut oil passes through the liver like a carbohydrate, and signals the brain that you’re not starving. Hopefully preventing the sense of anxiety. You can also use coconut oil to break your fast. I suggested this biohack to a morbidly obese woman who woke up in the middle of the night with food cravings. It worked like a treat, pun intended. She was able to sleep all night. 😀 Note, use the coconut oil that solidifies at room temperature. Take care.

hear hear. I watched my grandma die horribly (obesity, gangrene, blindness, dialysis, heart disease, dementia, etc) following all the diabetes association advice to the letter. Dr. Fung's willingness to probe deeper and speak up against the mainstream is a gift to all of us.
ADA diabetes guidelines aren't a joke. You had just chosen to ignore good advice and trust a stranger who's not an endocrinologist. You don't need either of those in order to lose weight and thus insulin resistance.
He calls fasting "strict," but for me, it is way easier than following some weird diet or trying to count calories. It is also way more effective. I read your whole trilogy, though, Dr. Fung, and it was excellent! Thanks.

Thank you Dr. Fung for all your knowledge sharing. I have been fasting and intermittent fasting now for three years, I am free from metformin and barely on a BP med now after my last 15 day fast in Jan 2024, dropped to 215 lbs from 235. A1c dropped from 7.1 in Oct 2023 to 5.5. Currently, on a 16-day water fast on day 10, my glucose is at a steady 70 to 73 all day occasional drop to 59. Celtic salt, magnesium and zinc supplements are mandatory and help alot. I started this current fast at 218 pounds, I'm 6'1" and currently at 207 lbs, final target weight is 190. Will get there on next 17 day fast in January 2025. We all can reverse this disease by fasting and eating protein and keeping away from processed unhealthy foods.

Dr. Fung. You are F&$*#! amazing. In March of this year, my A1C was 9.6 with uncontrolled DM. I was (and still am) on 2000 MG of metformin a day, 1 mg on Ozempic, and 20 mgs of Farxiga. I started IF (16:8) in April and have been doing it daily with no cheating. Today, I got my blood work done and my doctor looked at me and said: "What have you done to yourself? This is like looking at a completely new and different person. My A1C is now 5.5, my liver function has completely settled on normal levels, my renal numbers are normal (albumen in the last test) and everything is nominal. This method is not for me. I got my A1C down to 4.9 and lost 120 lbs. with just standard 8/16 I/F and occasional 48 or 72 hour fasts, maybe twice a year each. All my respect to you Doctor, couldn’t have done it without you.
@@devonsmith602 I do not monitor my own blood sugar at home. The numbers I gave were obtained from lab tests results ordered by my doctor during annual exams. My fasting glucose on these tests is currently ideal also, so are dozens of different other types of lab readings which all seemed to have fallen into place at the same time. It was like a domino effect, as I progressed with the I/F and low carb over time.
It depends on how insulin resistance a person has been and for how long. Some folks see better/quicker improvements with extended fasting than only IF.
Thanks doctor Jason Fung. I tried your fasting from this August 1 to August 28, I lost weight from 155-143lb. So 28 days 12 lbs. And it seems everything under the control. Thanks for your invaluable content that goes against the dogma "take your medication or else ...". It is exactly this saying from the diabetes "specialists" that made me look at your content about fasting. I have been absolutely confused by the extraordinary bias of the "medical profession" on this subject. So my reaction was: "There's got to be a better way than this horrible future they are painting for me !" As you explain it very well in your videos, type 2 diabetes is a "blood sugar regulation out of range problem". This translates to: too much sugar to often for the given level of physical activity. We have never in human history had such an access to high carb foods "within arm's reach". So fasting, voluntarily not eating, to get thing in balance again makes perfect sense. Because I have hydration problem that made water fasting difficult, I tried alternatives with varying moderate success. I have looked at all the things around fasting to try to improve things: - Take more salt during water fasting, to increase water retention - Liver / bile health for "low energy" / dizziness problems, not being able to enter keto - Try to reduce / manage Cortisol because of too much stress etc... So there are many things that can be tested besides real prolonged water fasting which is what gave the best fat loss results. I hope that the information will help others in their fat loss journey, A disclaimer, as I always say in these comments, never take anything for granted, take baby steps and see how your body reacts in your very specific situation. This is highly individual, there is no such thing as one size fits all. Any ideas about dehydration ? It is happening - On a regular diet (with medication: metformin) - On a keto diet (no carbs and no medication) - While fasting with normalized blood sugar (even with salt intake to force water retention) So, I am at a loss here, no more ideas. The goal would be to get this hydration under control so I could test the benefits of dry fasting even intermittently.

Intermittent fasting works . I reduced my weight from 222 to 195 in 3 months by doing 18(fasting ) hr : 6(eating ) hr window . I tried to not to eat added raw sugar stuff but not completely avoided . Had cake/sweets and fried items once in a while . Even then I was able to reduce 27 pounds in 3 months . I’ve been maintaining that weight since then . It’s been 6 months since . Next thing would be to be consistent on what and when I eat and add weight training / exercise to my schedule . My h1bac reduced from 6.7 to 5.5 in those 3 months as well .

Yes, people like me. I do the 5:2 diet, but really more like 4:3. Being allowed up to 600 calories, which is basically a keto snack for me, on down days makes those days much easier. On down days, I do one small meal about noon leading into a 24-hour fast.
Great video. I started 16-8 intermittent fasting and low carb eating on Dec 1, 2022 after being diagnosed with type 2. I lost 80 pounds in 8 months and my a1c went from 6.7 to 5.5. I've maintained the weight loss but want to lose 15 more pounds. I'm going to try one of these methods to break my weight loss plateau.
Years ago I tried Prolon - one needs to be ready for this like any fast - it's not "easier" and of course it's benefit is only in context with a holistic and ongoing strategy that you are committed to.

Thanks so much for your wisdom, Dr Fung. I am an intermittent faster, but am currently on day 5 of a water fast. First time ever!!!It is not going that great tbh. I am shaky, my heart is beating double as fast and I feel weak like hell. The other day when I walked my digs, I had to sit down because I thought I will pass out in a minute. Horrible!!Yes, I am adding electrolytes, but still.... I am currently cooking a bone broth in my slow cooker and will add that tomorrow. I don't like feeling weak and shaky, so if the bone broth doesn't improve things, I will stop the fast.😢
You need MORE electrolytes, today. Salt, some potassium and magnesium. And tomorrow add salt to the broth. And don't overdo water, it just flushes more out.

@@jenn7047 thank you! I actually added salt to my water yesterday morning and that was not a good idea, as it was like a laxative. Awful!! I have ready made electrolytes in drop form and use it with every glass of water I drink. I haven't had any cramps, thank god. But the overall shakiness and elevated heartbeat is just awful. Maybe it doesn't work for me....who knows. I have no problem doing 36 hour fasts, but this here is killing me and just doesn't feel right😮💨

To much , to often and wrong food are the problem of the modern society. Regularly I fast and diet zero-low carbs I am off medication. Now , I ve never been felt before.
After 24 years as a diagnosed T2D, in mid-January I changed my diet to cut out carbs, fast 14 hrs/day, and exercise daily. My HbA1C went from 7.4 last November to 5.6 6 months later, and off of Insulin and Glyclazide. My big issue, however, is that I have NEVER been overweight, and being on the low-carb diet has meant I have lost 28 pounds in 5 months, currently weighing 151 pounds on a 6'4" frame! I like my lower blood glucose readings, but I cannot seem to gain weight nor even muscle mass working out...
I wonder why so many claim (and fasting apps) that we go in ketosis after 12 hours since the personal variation is much bigger. Would love to see a video on that topic.

Thank you Dr. Fung! January 2024 I read your 'The Diabetes Code.' I was a 265 lbs. 72 year old type 2 diabetic diagnosed 5 years before. Come February I was off of insulin and eventually metformin. Now August I am now at 204 lbs. and my goal of 190 is well within sight. All due to OMAD and your marvelous advice. Life is good!

I am a slow learner, but possibly in denial, and up to now have been sugar addicted mostly of my life. Thanks to listening to the podcasts by Jason Feng, i am finally understanding what i have to do to get healthy. When i talked to my doctor about Jason Feng and his take on diabetes, she was very dismissive. Not very encouraging. My doctor told me she would prescribe me Oxempic. (Sic) weight loss drug. I said no thank you. She wrote in her notes, i had refused her advice. Also stopped taking the statins she wanted me to take., i feel very alone apart from my writing on this comment page. I have lost some weight (from 90kg to 80kg in the last year) and my BP has come down. I wish i could change doctors, but that is nearly impossible where i live due to doctors shortage. Regardless, i will carry on trying, and motivate myself to not eat sugar….
You're exactly where you need to be on your life's journey. Slow learner or not, you're taking the right steps for a better health and taking back control over your health and body. Listen to your body/intuition/higher self and trust that it will guide you into making better decisions. Your doctor doesn't know what's best for you, he/she has been taught how/when to prescribe pharm medication, not how to heal their patients. They make money from prescriptions and pharma makes profits. Once you are more in tune with your body and it starts healing, you will not need your pill prescribing doctor anymore (unless for emergencies). It is sad that we now live in a world where most people's main motivation is money and not doing what is right.
Im also a huge fan of dr fung and found that Mindy Pelz has very sound advice too. She's like a friend telling you dr fungs advice in her own words and always says 'we're a community here' (youtube) . so maybe youll find some support there. All the best!

Dr Fung, I started following your channel over3 years ago. My A1C atthetime was 6.1 (pre-diabetic) per my Dr. I started fasting eating once a day for a period of 1 Hr. I have been following this regimen since Dec 10. 2021 so close to three years. Easiest thing I have ever done. My weight dropped from 276 lbs to 195 lbs and my Last doc appt my A1Cwas 4.1. What is so special about Fung's advice? There were no local doctors or dieticians who had told you to eat less, exercise more, and avoid junk food? It's hard for me to believe that none of those things work, and that IF is an obese person's savior.

Not only does fasting for 24h reduce your insulin to 40% of your starting value, but fat instead of carbs in your meals greatly reduces insulin spikes so the fewer meals you have and the less carbs in each meal the more quickly you can get your blood sugar down. However when you fast 36-96h not only does it not slow metabolism and not lose muscle but this will cause liver fat to be the first fat lost because when fasting it is the liver that creates blood glucose and it uses fat to do so. This is also why unhealthy people get such a strong dawn effect this is your liver shooting glucose out into the body due to excess liver fat. The many benefits of occasional extended fasting and lowering dietary carbs:
Your body recycles up to 1/3 of all immune cells in a 72h fast, rejuvenating your immune system. This helps with autoimmune disease, cancers and cytokine storm.
Reduces B cells by over half in a single fast, greatly reducing allergic and other autoimmune responses.
Fasting and low carb help with POTS, which is driven by high insulin and blood sugar.
Clots and plaques are removed over time due to accelerated phagocytosis.
Fibrosis aka scarring is reversed over time, including in the heart, lungs and clots.
Clotting and fibrin are inhibited, stopping any 'unusual' clots.
Fasting quickly lowers blood pressure levels.
The hunger hormone ghrelin also lowers with extended fasting and rises from dieting.
Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of proteins, pathogens and plaques by macrophages and other immune bodies. This will remove spikes quicker, whether natural or unnatural in origin!
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered when fasting, reducing inflammation and allowing the immune bodies to move freely through the body.
T cells are cruciall in fighting cancer, autoimmune disease and infection. Tthymus generally stops making them with age but fasting releases stem cells, which then can become new T cells. It also releases growth hormone, which regenerates the thymus!
When insulin is high, vit D stays locked in the blood cells but fasting quickly lowers it. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased as fasting improves metabolic health, and D in turn increases autophagy.
Your brain prefers to burn ketones at a rate of around 2.5 to 1 when equally available to glucose. Except for brief periods of very intense exercise, your body mainly burns free fatty acids.
Fasting increases anti-aging Yamanaka factors and increases average telomere length in stem cell pools.

Fasting can help with MS, Depression, BPD, Autism and seizures.
Weight loss from daily caloric restriction has 1/4 to 1/3 of the weight lost as lean tissue while many studies show fat loss from 36 h fasts without losing any lean tissue!
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mtDNA. Mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism, fighting infection and cancer prevention!
24h of fasting reduces leptin levels by half! This reduces leptin resistance, which impairs immune function.
Fasting restores NAD+, reduces NADH and increases nitric oxide release to open blood vessels.
Over time fasting normalizes stomach acid levels and during the fast acid levels go down to allow for the healing of ulcers.
Fasting reduces pain and anxiety by stimulating the endocannabinoid system, just like the effect of CBD oil
The obese will lose loose skin while fasting, but the frail will have increased growth hormone release, which helps to make more lean tissue and reduce frailness.
When not in ketosis, the brain can only burn glucose, which produces a great deal of damaging ROS the brain has to deal with.
Fasts of 36-96 will not affect short term female fertility or affect menstrual cycle. They also may increase long term fertility for some women.
Fasting releases BDNF and NGF in the blood, creating new nerve and brain cell growth. This helps a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
Fasting stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells, destroying them. Senescent cells are responsible for many of the effects of aging and are a root cause of the development of cancer.
Glycine and trimethylglycine (TMG) can also be useful supplements while fasting that won't break ketosis and have many benefits.
A fasting mimicking diet for 3-5 days in a row provides many of the same benefits as water fasting. FMD has about 200-800 calories, under 18 g of protein and zero net carbs.
What breaks a fast? Anything with protein or carbohydrates in it will break a fast but most teas and herbs are OK. Supplements and meds usually break ketosis due to fillers or directly. Some of them also irritate the stomach. Many meds are dangerous to take while fasting.
Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. They also help with dementia and many other issues even if you take them while not fasting!
Children, expecting or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors that excrete insulin or certain rare forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all or only with doctor supervision. T1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis and done under doctor supervision. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness or tremors, then simply break the fast with a low carb meal.

Not entirely correct. The liver does not primarily use its own stored fat for gluconeogenesis. The liver’s fat stores are mainly used for energy production or as precursors for ketone body synthesis during fasting or ketosis. Glycerol from adipose tissue lipolysis is a significant contributor to gluconeogenesis in the liver.
Liver fat is what produce’s the triglycerides in serum. Check Lustig and liver glycogen is used for glucose as energy and yes liver uses it up hence dawn effect amplifies for diabetics. Your visceral fat is the ketone producer

I have been following the fasting lifestyle for over 2 years now, I eat lower carbs and sugar. You know how people meal prep for dinners? I dessert prep! I always have some low sugar
o sugar options stocked in my freezer (cookies and muffins mostly-they're easy and you can make a lot of them at a time!) I fast about 19-22 hours every day and have lost 60 LBS and kept it off! Not only that, I am no longer PRE-DIABETIC, my plantar fasciitis went away, I not longer have acid reflux, my thyroid is back down to normal range and my joints don't hurt anymore! Fasting is LIFE. 😀

@@lynnpep6962 Google! Just think of the foods you normally eat, then type in Keto in front of it. I do NOT follow the Keto lifestyle but it teaches you to cut down on sugar. I have a binder full of recipes and always have the ingredients on hand. This is the only method in my life that has ever worked for me. Oh, and I never exercise!
I went from an A1C 9.1 to A1C 5.6 it took 3yrs..by just cutting out sugar and lots of exercise..now im looking into a diet to improve my numbers even more

Thank you so much Dr. Fung. I discovered your channel at the end of May this year. I had the CABG bypass surgery last October. Before the surgery, I was non-diabetic. During every year annual body checks. my family doctor collected the blood samples himself, sent to a lab in which I have no idea of the lab. He phoned me the test results, but never in details. Every year he told me no diabetes, but I have to monitor closely the blood sugar because my mom has serious diabetes. In the hospital discharge report, it states I am non-diabetic. After the surgery, the cardiac surgeon prescribed me Atorvastatin 80 mg daily dose. I completely changed my diet, no processed food, no burger, fries, pizza, ice cream, cheesecake etc. After three months, the cardiologist halved the Atorvastatin dosage from 80 mg to 40 mg. Meanwhile, the cardiologist asked me to go for a blood test. It was done at Dynacare. This is the first time I can read my report in details. I can do my own studies what the data about. The HB A1C was 5.9. In the report, it states if a person HB A1C is between 6 and 6.4, it is classified to be pre-diabetes. So I was classified as non-diabetic. After I had fully recovered, I resumed my daily one hour gym every morning. I do one hour of elliptical which is my exercise to keep fit. Three months later, I had another blood test. This test had more things, including cholesterol, triglycerides, Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), etc. The HB A1C had elevated to 6.3, and the ALT had elevated to 132, way beyond the threshold level of 46. I started worrying, asking why. The cardiologist did not have time to see me, as such, I did my own research. I suspected it may be the side effect of the high dosage of the Atorvastatin. I consulted my new family doctor (The original one has retired). He halved the Atorvastatin from 40 mg to 20 mg, asked me to do an abdominal ultrasound to see if there is NAFLD, in addition, take another blood test on the ALT a week later. The result was encouraging, the ALT had fallen to 93, proving my hypothesis of the side effect is correct. I found your channel at the end of May. I learned how to prevent having types two diabetes. I started intermittent fasting by skipping lunch. I have breakfast around 5:15 am daily, dinner around 6:15 pm. It proved intermittent fasting work effectively to lose weight faster. Since then, I lost over ten pounds in two months. Last Friday, I had the blood test, I am delighted to see the HB A1C has fallen back to 5.9, the ALT has fallen to 53. Other than that, the HDL, and the triglycerides are all improved. The LDL only elevated slightly from the previous reading of 1.27 to 1.35. Yes, intermittent fasting works. I look forward to another fall in HB A1C in the blood test three months from now. 😄

I reversed my Type 2 on the carnivore diet in less than four months. During that time I did a two week water fast and at the end of month five I'm halfway through a second two week water fast. Primary reason for the fasts were weight loss. I started out at 360lbs and am now down to 299lbs. I eliminated two diabetes medications and two blood pressure medications from my life. I'd give it a try if all else has failed.
With type 2 you either have to go aggressively high carb low fat or high fat low carb. Neither are easy but the results speak for themselves.
@@terseandtiny1746 the human brain thrives on fat and a high sugar/carb diet will not improve insulin resistance. Clearly, the high fat low carb approach is superior for improving metabolic health and reversing chronic conditions like diabetes and dementia (often referred to as T3 diabetes).
What proof do you have of reversing your type II diabetes? Have you drank a glass of orange juice or a bowl of rice or gone back on a normal diet with carbs (Carnivores eat all the animal fur included, humans aren't meant to be carnivores and the diet has been shown to induce dyshyperlipidemia which means you're on the road to a full STEMI one day, but at least you don't have diabetes I guess) without spiking your blood sugar levels as you once did? Treating isn't not curing. I doubt the beta cells in your pancreas have regenerated, in fact high protein diets are shown to damage them. I bet you've actually progressed your diabetes.

I purchased "The diabetes Code" on ebay years ago but I never seemed to have time to open it up and read it. About one year after being diagnosed with diabetes2, I remembered fishing it out of my unread books pile and finally found time to read it. I told my primary doctor I was going to try the fasting, he just shook his head and smiled. He told me that he and I would be going on a long journey together (he assumed the book was just another "Fad" going on out there?). For me, it is much easier to not eat anything for 24 hours than to eat a little
The times I have achieved to fast, I have felt amazing, more stable emotionally. However I am suffering from an anxiety disorder (binge-eating), and my mind feels in danger every time I attempt to go back to fasting (not to binge, just to stop the fast). I would love to have the insight of someone on my situation, I truly believe part of my healing process will be intermitent fasting.
If beginning a fast causes you anxiety, take a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil before you go to bed and again when you wake up.
Periodically take the coconut oil until you feel in control to begin your fasting in earnest. It’s also okay to continue to take it during the fast.
Coconut oil passes through the liver like a carbohydrate, and signals the brain that you’re not starving. Hopefully preventing the sense of anxiety.
You can also use coconut oil to break your fast.
I suggested this biohack to a morbidly obese woman who woke up in the middle of the night with food cravings. It worked like a treat, pun intended. She was able to sleep all night. 😀
Note, use the coconut oil that solidifies at room temperature.

hear hear. I watched my grandma die horribly (obesity, gangrene, blindness, dialysis, heart disease, dementia, etc) following all the diabetes association advice to the letter. Dr. Fung's willingness to probe deeper and speak up against the mainstream is a gift to all of us.
ADA diabetes guidelines aren't a joke. You had just chosen to ignore good advice and trust a stranger who's not an endocrinologist. You don't need either of those in order to lose weight and thus insulin resistance.
He calls fasting "strict," but for me, it is way easier than following some weird diet or trying to count calories. It is also way more effective. I read your whole trilogy, though, Dr. Fung, and it was excellent! Thanks.

I have been fasting and intermittent fasting now for three years, I am free from metformin and barely on a BP med now after my last 15 day fast in Jan 2024, dropped to 215 lbs from 235. A1c dropped from 7.1 in Oct 2023 to 5.5. Currently, on a 16-day water fast on day 10, my glucose is at a steady 70 to 73 all day occasional drop to 59. Celtic salt, magnesium and zinc supplements are mandatory and help alot. I started this current fast at 218 pounds, I'm 6'1" and currently at 207 lbs, final target weight is 190. Will get there on next 17 day fast in January 2025. We all can reverse this disease by fasting and eating protein and keeping away from processed unhealthy foods.

It cannot be reversed. It can be controlled with diet, but once you start eating carbs again your glucose will spike hard.

Dr. Fung. You are F&$*#! amazing. In March of this year, my A1C was 9.6 with uncontrolled DM. I was (and still am) on 2000 MG of metformin a day, 1 mg on Ozempic, and 20 mgs of Farxiga. I started IF (16:8) in April and have been doing it daily with no cheating. Today, I got my blood work done and my doctor looked at me and said: "What have you done to yourself? This is like looking at a completely new and different person. My A1C is now 5.5, my liver function has completely settled on normal levels, my renal numbers are normal (albumen in the last test) and everything is nominal. My cholestrol totals are nominal at 180 mg/dl. However, my LDL is 137 where nominal is
This method is not for me. I got my A1C down to 4.9 and lost 120 lbs. with just standard 8/16 I/F and occasional 48 or 72 hour fasts, maybe twice a year each. All my respect to you Doctor, couldn’t have done it without you.

I do not monitor my own blood sugar at home. The numbers I gave were obtained from lab tests results ordered by my doctor during annual exams. My fasting glucose on these tests is currently ideal also, so are dozens of different other types of lab readings which all seemed to have fallen into place at the same time. It was like a domino effect, as I progressed with the I/F and low carb over time.
It depends on how insulin resistance a person has been and for how long. Some folks see better/quicker improvements with extended fasting than only IF.

It is exactly this saying from the diabetes "specialists" that made me look at your content about fasting.
I have been absolutely confused by the extraordinary bias of the "medical profession" on this subject.
So my reaction was: "There's got to be a better way than this horrible future they are painting for me !"
As you explain it very well in your videos, type 2 diabetes is a "blood sugar regulation out of range problem".
This translates to: too much sugar to often for the given level of physical activity.
We have never in human history had such an access to high carb foods "within arm's reach".
So fasting, voluntarily not eating, to get thing in balance again makes perfect sense.
Because I have hydration problem that made water fasting difficult, I tried alternatives with varying moderate success.
I have looked at all the things around fasting to try to improve things:
- Take more salt during water fasting, to increase water retention
- Liver / bile health for "low energy" / dizziness problems, not being able to enter keto
- Try to reduce / manage Cortisol because of too much stress etc...
So there are many things that can be tested besides real prolonged water fasting which is what gave the best fat loss results.
I hope that the information will help others in their fat loss journey,
A disclaimer, as I always say in these comments, never take anything for granted, take baby steps and see how your body reacts in your very specific situation. This is highly individual, there is no such thing as one size fits all.
Any ideas about dehydration ? It is happening
- On a regular diet (with medication: metformin)
- On a keto diet (no carbs and no medication)
- While fasting with normalized blood sugar (even with salt intake to force water retention)
So, I am at a loss here, no more ideas.
The goal would be to get this hydration under control so I could test the benefits of dry fasting even intermittently.

Intermittent fasting works . I reduced my weight from 222 to 195 in 3 months by doing 18(fasting ) hr : 6(eating ) hr window . I tried to not to eat added raw sugar stuff but not completely avoided . Had cake/sweets and fried items once in a while . Even then I was able to reduce 27 pounds in 3 months . I’ve been maintaining that weight since then . It’s been 6 months since . Next thing would be to be consistent on what and when I eat and add weight training / exercise to my schedule . My h1bac reduced from 6.7 to 5.5 in those 3 months as well .

Yes, people like me. I do the 5:2 diet, but really more like 4:3. Being allowed up to 600 calories, which is basically a keto snack for me, on down days makes those days much easier. On down days, I do one small meal about noon leading into a 24-hour fast.

Great video. I started 16-8 intermittent fasting and low carb eating on Dec 1, 2022 after being diagnosed with type 2. I lost 80 pounds in 8 months and my a1c went from 6.7 to 5.5. Thanks so much for your wisdom, Dr Fung. I am an intermittent faster, but am currently on day 5 of a water fast. First time ever!!!It is not going that great tbh. I am shaky, my heart is beating double as fast and I feel weak like hell. The other day when I walked my digs, I had to sit down because I thought I will pass out in a minute. Horrible!!Yes, I am adding electrolytes, but still....
I am currently cooking a bone broth in my slow cooker and will add that tomorrow. I don't like feeling weak and shaky, so if the bone broth doesn't improve things, I will stop the fast.😢
You need MORE electrolytes, today. Salt, some potassium and magnesium. And tomorrow add salt to the broth. And don't overdo water, it just flushes more out.
can you make the bone broth in your instant pot to get there faster? When I make it in the insta I run it twice and still it's ready in 2 to 3 hours.

I have ready made electrolytes in drop form and use it with every glass of water I drink. I haven't had any cramps, thank god. But the overall shakiness and elevated heartbeat is just awful. Maybe it doesn't work for me....who knows. I have no problem doing 36 hour fasts, but this here is killing me and just doesn't feel right😮💨

I have a question about long term remission or reversal. If we truly reverse the disease, and allow our bodies healing time, have you found that people can return to a somewhat higher carb diet again, or will we always return to a diabetic state if we return to eating carbs [ex potatoes, bread] and 3 meals per day? To much , to often and wrong food are the problem of the modern society. Regularly I fast and diet zero-low carbs I am off medication. Now , I ve never been felt before.
After 24 years as a diagnosed T2D, in mid-January I changed my diet to cut out carbs, fast 14 hrs/day, and exercise daily.
My HbA1C went from 7.4 last November to 5.6 6 months later, and off of Insulin and Glyclazide. My big issue, however, is that I have NEVER been overweight, and being on the low-carb diet has meant I have lost 28 pounds in 5 months, currently weighing 151 pounds on a 6'4" frame! I like my lower blood glucose readings, but I cannot seem to gain weight nor even muscle mass working out...

I wonder why so many claim (and fasting apps) that we go in ketosis after 12 hours since the personal variation is much bigger. Would love to see a video on that topic.
