    *IMPORTANT*
    By plain form+ かどうか , I mean CASUAL FORM+ かどうか. So it can be in the past tense as well.
    Example sentences:)
    I don't remember if I turned the light off.
    電気を消したか(どうか)覚えていない。
    でんきをけしたか(どうか)おぼえていない。
    I will ask Miku if she already bought a ticket.
    みくに もうチケットを買ったか(どうか) 聞いてみる。
    みくに もうチケットをかったか (どうか)きいてみる。
    I should confirm if I could make a reservation.
    予約できたか(どうか)確認した方がいい。
    よやくできたか(どうか) かくにんしたほうがいい。

    I usually do not get much out of grammar videos or explanations because they don't often show similar alternatives especially for the spoken language and how things get abbreviated. By putting the extended form in brackets or a different colour, it really helps me not to get confused when I see something I know but just a little different.
    Your videos have been really helpful to me and the grammar points come up quickly in what I listen to and read. You have great intuition for how to teach these ideas.

      いくかどうかがわからない in which she said we can drop が.
      But i have a doubt in first が can't be use here bcoz いくかどうかis a clause and わからないis 2nd sentence. sililar she used を on later example

    What about か否か? Is it used in conversation?

    • @zeroimpact742
      @zeroimpact742 3 года назад

      か否か could be used in everyday conversation, but rarely is it. I think it's appropriate to use it when you're talking about something very serious, especially when you're giving a presentation in business or a speech in front of a large audience.
      ex) COVID-19対策が成功するか否かは政府の迅速かつ有効な政策実施にかかっていると思う。(You could say this line in the conversation with your friend)
      I believe that the success of the COVID-19 measures depends on the quick and effective implementation of policies by the government.

      @lesthermiranda1794 3 года назад

      @@zeroimpact742 I like か否か much more than かどうか cause it sounds more direct and more specific than かどうか, what かどうか really does is that it converts the whole clause into a question and then adds the element of how so it is not really a direct translation of "whether or not". Please tell me what is the difference in nuance between those two expressions 'will and be+ing'.

      @@zeroimpact742 I guess it's kinda partly historical partly social construct.
      "i am coming" grammatically it means something happening right now. But since the verb implies something done over time so it is also used to state my future plans as well as ongoing event like "it's raining" (in English).
      "i will come" is used in English to talk about things that will happen starting from tomorrow (not today) or later.
      The problem is when something gets translated to English which one to use. Although the speaker could me tomorrow, today, or even a probability of event happening it might not be exactly that in English.
      Don't know how important it is to a native English speaker though. Maybe it's better to use "will come" everywhere without stressing too much about it.

      @@googavo1d thanks so much for this in-depth analysis.
      If I understood your explanation correctly and I got the intent of the first question you posted right, what you wanted to ask is whether there is a difference in the way the two English expressions are said in Japanese due to the difference in tenses? If so, the Japanese language is not that strict, or perhaps I should say that there are not that many expressions in different tenses. You can't go wrong with that expression for either case "will or be+ing". The length of time it takes for something to happen does not affect the Japanese expression. But an adverbial phrase may be used to express the length of time, though it is not something that should necessarily be added.
      ex) ケンが'今から'来るかどうか知ってる?(Do you know if Ken is coming 'now'?) ケンが'来年'来るかどうか知ってる?(Do you know if Ken will come 'next year'?) Plain form+かどうか does not change in either sentence.
      btw you should differentiate how to write シ or ツ and ン or ソ in your video. the last lines are differentiated by ↙ or ↗. シ・ン are ↗ ツ・ソ are ↙

      知らない means you don't have the knowledge. you should say like 来年日本に行けるか(どうか)分からない。 分からない=can't tell
