@@Scion141 i don’t know if im too late and you’ve probably already found it out, but, what you call a “masu stem” is acctually called 連用形(れんようけい), also known as the “continuative form”. this stem can be used to connect sentences just like the て-form, but it also can turn verbs into nouns. and thats what happens in 「ありのまま」. the verb ある is turned into a noun あり. thats also why の is following it

12:04 Maybe it is logical. For the past tense, you're describing what unchanged state had occurred and continues to be, so you use the past tense, since it happened. But in the negative, something not happening having a permanent future effect and state makes less sense, I think. Also, ない is an auxiliary adjective, so it's good for describing things. I'm probably wrong and have no clue what I'm talking about 😅
You are exactly right. When something happened, you describe the event with a verb, and this event might have an aftermath, a result state. Then you can talk about that state remaining unchanged with まま. When something DIDN'T happen, that is in itself a state, so it gets described with ない, an adjective (which after all is said and done, is nothing more than a stative verb). That's why it makes perfect sense to describe that state in non-past tense. When you use the past tense with a verb + まま you are not really referring to the past action either, but rather, the present state resulting from that action!

I think affirmative verb with まま needs past tense because something has to be already established in that state. so 灯りを付けたまま寝る means that relative to the time I go to bed, the light will have to have been switched on for it to remain that way. But negative verb with まま needs to be in imperfect tense because it refers to something never happening. 服を外さないまま寝る means that relative to the time I go to bed, undressing did not happen and won't happen. With nouns and adjectives, the past tense suggests it used to be that way but is no longer now. きれいだったまま is contradictory: it used to be (だった) while remaining (まま) pretty/clean doesn't make too much sense.
Misa your lessons have been amazing and a core component to me studying for certifications and fluency. I would love a video of you showing us how to sign up for the JLPT in the US as it is not the easiest thing in the world. Will continue lessons until I get to my goal regardless!
This is not difficult. Last year I registered for JLPT in Ukraine (was canceled due to coronavirus), and this year I registered in Poland. In Ukraine, the registration took place live at the university where the Japanese cultural center was located, where I had to fill out three sets of documents (one for myself, one for sending to Japan, and another set for the commission in Ukraine), however, I did this while still at home (according to the tutorial on the Internet). In Poland, registration was very fast, and was carried out via the Internet, three packs of documents did not have to be filled out. I recommend you check out the JLPT global site and look up information on US cities. *(Maybe somewhere I wrote with errors, so sorry).

Nice video. I was trying to understand how to use まま. Btw, まま sounds like the works mom in Spanish (mamá). But the word ままで sounds like a very rude Spanish expression lol

It is interesting that one word has different meanings in different languages, yet is pronounced very similarly. Mama is mother in English. I love your videos but wish I could get a book showing the 3 ways of writing in Japanese. In grammar school in the US, we have books that show young children how to make letters in the alphabet. As a novice to the Japanese way of writing, I am like a child.

Mama (ママ) is also used by Japanese kids to mean mum too. It's a bit baby-ish, kinda like it is in English.

Japanese grammar is rather consistent, perhaps because Japanese is mostly a language isolate, especially in comparison to English.
