EXTREME PILOTING Boeing 737 into Skardu Pakistan

- Skardu located at an altitude of close to 8000 feet is surrounded by high mountains making it a complicated approach to be flown only by Captain who are qualified for the airport and only in good visual weather and during daylight hours only.
Pakistan International is the only airline to operate into this airport with service to Islamabad which is the roundtrip flight JustPlanes filmed on the Boeing 737-300.
In 2012 a Just Planes team spent a week in Pakistan to capture the aircraft and some of the routes operated by PIA. The mission here was to give viewers a look at aviation and flight operations in the country. We're happy to welcome Pakistan International Airlines, the 273rd airline in our seriews! You will be treated to flights on the older classic generation 737 and 747 to the newer generation 777 with few presentations but lots of visuals.
Highlights of the program include the ATR-42 flight to Gilgit, a hub for mountaineering expeditions in Northern Pakistan. Gilgit has a short runway (1600m) located at the edge of a slope.
Skardu has a longer runway but at an altitude of over 8000 feet and surrounded by mountains the final approach is very complicated as you enter into the valley with sharp turns and obstacles on both sides. Our flight from Islamabad and back operates on the Boeing 737 classic 300 version.
Last but not least is a chance to fly one of the last passenger 747 classic aircraft and one of the last cockpits manned by a Flight Engineer. Only 81 -300s were built with just about none left in passenger service today!

No modern instruments, high mountains, thin air, no runway PAPI lights, no altitude callouts, manual turn and alignment, steep bank, that's the definition of professional aviators!
Pakistan International Airline pilots, one of the best in the world, no doubt!
Thanks for your true analysis and appreciation bro.. 👍👍💓
Absolutely
wow
@@SolitarySolitude and one of the most illegal. (Fake pilot licenses)
Calm, confident, professional.
Real aviators going about their business. Well done indeed!
Pakistan International Airline pilots, one of the best in the world, no doubt!
Capts.now B777 commander and Fo.is Atr Captain....
still_toilets_less_india2019 Thank You Thank you
Thanks for your nice words bro.. 💓💓👍
Greatest respect for these pilots, what a place to land, no errors allowed there .
Pakistan International Airline pilots, one of the best in the world, no doubt!
Ye no error otherwise its your last one I was experience last year October even takeoff also quite interesting
Thanks bro.. 💓💓👍
PIA now uses A320 on this route. 737s have been withdrawn from service for the last few years.
A difficult landing, flights are usually cancelled due weather but on days like this, the approach is breathtaking
Yeah I can imagine a cloud quickly rolling in or some fog, what could you do except climb immediately and hope not flying into a mountain.
Yes bro... Thanks for your nice words.
Just wow! Such a humble pilot. Great job!
Thanks Bro.. 👍👍👍💓
In the end the atc asks them if they have brought coriander 😂
Podina not coriander, means mint.
"Speed, speed!"
"Terrain!"
"Bank angle!"... 🤤😨
Hahahaha i love aviation! ❤❤❤
Ikr
Wow. Super exciting landing. I mean watching so many of your videos and others you do not hear terrain and bank angle calls obe after another too often. Amazing. Massive like for this video
The capt was a former officer of Pakistan airforce I think.. You can't afford even a minor here...
Thanks bro.. 💓👍👍👍
Wow
Thank you
Skd is my village.
Love and respect from Baltistan.
this is an old 737 from looking at the cockpit..lovely mountains all around...fabulous..
you know its extreme when you get bank angle warnings
Not extreme at all. Can handle 67dgs bank at 2.5G, which is the maximum for a transport category aircraft ;)
Martin R. Which is not usable in normal ops as considered “ unusual attitude “. TBH you shouldn’t be hearing bank angle warnings
Rob D2 True! You’d hear it at category C airfields though. The reason why EGPWS is disabled ;)
Martin R. I suppose for a cat C, but the egpws is still in there, reference the “ terrain, terrain “ as he closes that hill before turning left away
Martin R.
Max bank angle differs with the type of a/c.
That looks even hairier than the approach into Paro, and doing it in an ancient 737 to boot rather than the modern A320s that are flown into Paro.
The B737 -300 is only a few years older than the first Airbus 320 types. But yeah a damn tricky flight.
You are amazing pilots.
I can't imagine what this must have been like the first time you did it.
After this busy airports must seem like a piece of cake:)
Cheers,
Rik Spector

Thanks for your words bro.. 👍👍💓
I’ll bet on a windy day that is a real exciting ride😳
Man, what is this!? Goosebumps!
Excellent skills of the pilot, maybe former Air Force pilot maintaining the center line - great pilot - job well done
The machine responded well to the pilot inputs.
All in all this is great stuff.
Our old Boeing with top windows is reliable - Airbus you can’t top that.
Yes most PIA pilots are ex-Airforce or Army Aviation guys.
@@myrontedrow3242 actually both these pilots are civilian pilots
Michael Alden No sir he’s not ex airforce and you don’t have to be ex airforce to be a good pilot. We had ex airforce in Pia .some were good some werent ....
Thanks bro.. 👍👍👍💓
Probably the coolest, most butt clenching JP video I’ve seen. Mountains on all sides, bank angle and terrain alarms going off. Even the PIC commenting on the difficulty at the end. Definitely not your normal “747 landing in Paris”
Damn Loving it. PIA pilots got Balls.
One hell of an approach and landing. Thanks!
Love to fly with PIA. Thank you for making impossible flights to Skardu. Love and respect from people of Skardu. ❤️
Thoroughly enjoyed that , great pilots !
omg.... what an insane approach! and then this small airport in the middle of the desert, fascinating!
Thanks bro..
Old school. Ink and paper! Well done!
Double WOW! Super professional pilots with nerves of steel!

@@SolitarySolitude "Super professional' most of the time news.sky.com/story/drunk-pia-pilot-irfan-faiz-jailed-in-britain-10427045
That looks a challenge, impressive
Thanks bro.. 💓💓👍
One of the most radical approaches I"ve ever seen!
"only in good visual weather and during daylight hours only." Must be fun trying to schedule these flights..
Very solid. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful Shots...Big Like !
Very beautiful approach, skillful confident pilots. I thought the gear down was done so early!! but I'm sure the pilots know what they are doing :)
That’s the procedure for Skardu airport. You have to configure the aircraft early....
this is amazing, I love this one
Awesome video...superb show of aviation skills.
Thanks bro.. 👍👍👍
Love these videos. It's as close as I'll ever get to flying a big jet.
Excellent skills, great attitude and perfect coordination. Proud of our pilots.
No doubt, Masha'Allah, PIA pilots do wonders.
Great piloting.. bcz there so many hills.. great job..
"hills" ? those are mountains my friend :) Love Northern Pakistan.
Awesome skills, love the terminal, just a couple of buses!
Thanks bro.
Excelent landing... Nice
thats extreme flying. wow!
GREAT PILOT.!!!
Wow, amazing flying!
Good job gentlemen, Gods speed and safe flying.
Amazing approach. Well done!
Bankangle bankangle. Really flying on the edge. Fantastic
"Speed is 140, 142 knots" :D
That's what I mean by on the edge, 140-142 knots with about 60 degrees bank angle is probably already very close to a stall / spin with a 737. But the captain will know for sure what he is doing. It looks great .
30 degree bank angle
Amazing approach captain
Great piece of flying
Great Job PIA pilots
Thanks bro.. 👍👍
Amazing!
Nice. Tegucigalpa is another airport with a crazy approach through mountains.
Phew.....142 knots with bank angle alerts turning final, yeah I would call that extreme for a commercial airline.
8000ft elevation.....groundspeed would be much higher. Think turning radius.
Yes bro.. Thanks.. 👍👍
What a incredible landing.
Love the 737
Amazing Landing. By the way Stardu Airport has just been upgraded to Stardu International Airport yesterday. They extended the runway and built new terminal. Now you can take a flight from Dubai to skardu non stop. Pakistan international airline and Fly Dubai airline will fly to skardu from Dubai nonstop.
Very smooth landing
Verdy verdy gud.
Brutal...
Beautiful landing
I live in pakistan . And i am shocked to see those pilots landing without altitude calls etc . Amazing . Looked like they land a cessna lol
Very nice landing.
Nice landing
nice approach, great landing. Looks like you greased it. Thank you for posting
Goog video
V. Nice.
Epic!
Utterly beautiful and enjoyable!
very nice ! i try it on my simulator one day like this ( i land in Skardu several times )
Great video and impressive piloting! I can guarantee that I will not fly to or from that airport by choice!!!
Thanks bro.. 👍👍👍
We, the inhabitants of this place are totally used to flying like this. :D
Very nice Pakistan zindabad
I was experience this last year October the plane turned 3 times 180° to make approach to runway that was amazing
This old bird is doing well.
Hey! I didn’t hear “gear down”. Freaked me out! At best it would have pulled them up quick!
Wow!!!
13:19 man spoke facts, well done captain!
Seeing those surrounding high grounds, Looks like they driving a truck instead of an airplane.. mad respect for their calmness
Long live PIA
l love❤️ Pakistan😀🇹🇷
😀😀😀 you are right👏👏👏.true format : l love ❤️🇵🇰,from 🇹🇷
Thanks friend. Same to you
Dang beautiful old plane kek
That must be one of those hand me down 73’s from the 80’s
No it has autopilot but this airport has none.
The aviation equivalent of a handbrake turn into a parking spot.
I'm quite sure there's no room for error otherwise you might be a history
huh cool. 10:12 The airport buildings look like Mos Eisley
11:55 The refueling is waiting on the right :)
Those are hardened shelters for combat aircraft.
Just found the new captain of our Pakistani cricket team who can make the impossible a possible 😜
Nice charts ! Ebay ?
Round dial gauges → that is why they can put it in there
Why they have no computer callout ?
Estan locos
Bad ass!
Terrain Terrain, Speed Speed, Bank Angle Bank Angle the only thing missing is Pull Up Pull Up 😁
Indeed the voice of death..
Thanks bro.. 👍👍
I'd love to see the B737 back with PIA, not that I hate the Airbus 320. That's also a great aircraft.
This is mad. :D
Thanks bro.. 👍👍
AMAZING !!!
Cockpit scream -- bank angle, bank angle, bank angle:
Pilot ---huh ?
Thanks bro.. 👍👍
First!
Very old video Runway 14R was not there.
4:00 Gear down at FL200 😯
9:04 9:12 !!
Tight turns!
Is it still possible to land at this airport when visibility is low?
Milano its closed during most of the winter
I don’t know what has more of a pucker factor....this approach/landing or the one into Wrangle, AK, USA from the northeast approach. Either way, my ass left hickies on the seat.
Real airplane, with real pilots, if you used a modern airplane, nobody can go there.
