I heard about it just earlier today when I was watching a Vsause video because he mentioned it and for some reason I thought it sounded familiar yet I don't ever remember hearing about it before. I looked it up and it reminded me of a very specific memory of a certain video that looks very similar to this style that I watched early on in my childhood. So I've basically spent the past 2 or so hours I've been trying to find the videoing my memory (partly while watching this video) and I'm absolutely enthralled while baffled that this isn't more heard of

I know there was never intended to be any sort of deeper lore with Animusic, but the empty nature of the scenes makes my mind go wild. There's not a single indication of organic life or activity, and it's almost unsettling.
I can imagine all of these taking place in some sort of futuristic alien planet, where the inhabitants created a variety of visually spectacular musical performances. Some run on pipes, others use electric currents, some use a clockwork of intricate gears, some are played by robots, and some have instruments which are the robots. Regardless of how it was achieved, these shows were always enjoyed by many.
But then, one day, the inhabitants all left abruptly. No damage is done to the infrastructure of the planet in their departure, but at the same time no one can deactivate or dismantle any of the technology left behind.
So, over and over again, these machines continue to preform. Unaware of the fact that there is no longer an audience to captivate, they continue as they were programmed to do. As memory of the abandoned planet fades, it remains untouched and desolate. On top of a tower, on a pyramid, on a stage, or even in the bowels of a laboratory, the machines preform the same routines for hundreds or thousands of years, unaware that they will never play before living eyes again.

I’m totally with you there! I would always make up stories, as a kid, for each song, for why the instruments played, and who they played for. Except I always imagined the audience there, and just not shown to us.

I remember being amazed at just how _good_ Animusic looks on a standard-definition TV. Apparently the creators did some kind of special compositing on the DVDs to achieve this effect, and it's lost if it's played on a computer rather than being directly output to an SDTV from a DVD player. With how far upscaling technology has come, however, I expect it could probably be upscaled pretty well to HD if someone who really knows their stuff made an effort.

I think this is the only thing that I can 100% truthfully say that I was a fan of since before I can remember. Back when I was 3 me and my family went on vacation to Jamaica, and before I could fall asleep each night, I would need to watch Starship Groove on my dad's iPod. I have never stopped loving Animusic since then. The songs are top quality, and some of my favorite of all time (with sentimentality included, these 2 are at combined #1 for my favorite album of all time), the animation is incredibly memorable, and me and my family made up lore to pretty much, if not all of the songs. I can honestly say this shaped a lot of my music taste, and is a huge reason why I still love EDM 16 years after I was in Jamaica watching Starship Groove. Animusic made me love music, and I can't thank Wayne Lytle and David Crognale enough.

What would be amazing is programming an AI that could generate the visual control of this model based on musical input. So basically you sit down at a keyboard begin playing a piece and the 3D model animates in conjunction. You could either input all of the instruments live or recorded and the 3D model AI would animate and supplement any instruments not being supplied.

When I was in elementary school, my music teacher used to put this on the old Panasonic type box TV and I really liked it. I couldn’t tell if we had a DVD of it where I went or a VHS (my midsize Southern city’s one Catholic school couldn’t really be expected to have the most advanced technology in the mid-2010s), but on the old TV there wasn’t much of a difference in video quality.
Fast forward years later and I get recommended “Pipe Dream” and I realize I’ve seen something like this but have only a vague idea of the video series title. I find another video about _Animusic_ and the memories of childhood return.
Honestly my music teacher was a bit of a legend in the over thirty years he taught at my school. He still performs for local jazz groups and occasional parish services, and he still plays guitar rather well for an octogenarian, but it’s no wonder that he eventually retired from teaching. Guess children can be quite much lol
Big credit to him for introducing me to this. Now is probably the first time in a long while I hear “Retro Future”, which I heard first and always thought the most memorable. I could still remember the melody of much of the piece and the sounds of the backing instruments; that’s how much it still stuck in my head. Even the xylophone bit.

I remember watching this on PBS. I was blown away and was awed that anyone could put it together or even have that kind of imagination, the patience and focus to bring it about. This is definitely an artistic achievement.
Unlike other commenters, I was in my mid 30s when I discovered it. For some reason I was surprised that it was for children. I just saw it as an art piece.
Many have commented on why this is not so well remembered as it should be. I have a theory. Many commenters wrote on how this was introduced to them by their elementary school music teacher. In the 2000's you were the lucky ones because many schools did away with art and music programs.
This is when No Child Left Behind started to kick in and schools had to teach to the test. Those of the Animusic generation probably experienced how different teachers taught from elementary to high school. When you were in elementary school you were seen by teachers as children to be inspired. I am guessing that by the time you got to high school you had to listen to teachers try and get students to care about some stupid test that the teachers loathed. A test that really did not mean much of anything to anyone, except the testing companies, they loved it.
One last thought. I am of an older generation. I am someone who feels that when anyone over the age of 50 starts bitching about millennials and Zoomers that we can. Humm? Instead of whining about "the entitled young people of today"? Just a minute. It's on the tip of my tongue. Oh, now I remember we should, SHUT THE FLYING, FIDDLY FUCK UP!
In all seriousness, all I have to say as someone who is 57 years old is that I am truly and deeply ashamed of the horrid mess we have left.
I do want you to know that some of us did try to leave you something better than what you have now. Unfortunately, we were too few, too divided, too slow, too out funded and out Bullshitted. Some of us did try. I am sorry we could not get it done. I will do my best to help clean up the mess that has been left to you. Mea culpa.

why is animusic still a classic to this day who knew that a music genre that isn't popular but popular enough to survive today's music. animusic started way back during the 90s and became popular during the mid-2000s its insane i still love this music after 8 years since i first heard it... still a perfect classic with no flaws.

I first watched this when i was 5 (not in music class like everyone else) and for the following 4 years i basically made my entire personality around animusic, and i thought it was made in like 2010 and 2013 or something its that good. Now im back into it 9 years later

I feel like this whole series was part of the reason I got into bass.

Hearing this makes everything better. I own both DVDs, and I have listened to them so much that they've cracked in a few places (they still play though, don't worry)! I cannot tell you how important Animusic was to my childhood and still is to me now. I can always rely on Animusic to make me feel better when things are stressful. Everything about it is perfect, from the beautiful music to the gorgeous yet retro visuals, to the nostalgia it brings... It almost makes me cry (and sometimes has). I hope they do release Animusic 3 someday, but even if they don't, the legacy of Wayne Lytle and David Crognale will always live on.

I had those DVDs too, I absolutely loved the option where you could isolate certain instruments as a kid, really helpful for learning about music composition

@@randomexcessmemories4452 also nice daft punk reference in your username :) I looked at some of your playlists and I gotta say you have great taste in electronic music, I'm convinced animusic is what got me into it in the first place.

@@isaiahromero9861 Thank you so much! I wouldn't be surprised if it was Animusic that got me into it as well. It was sort of my musical awakening, and even sparked my early creativity to write my own music! I really should get back to that...
