As a guitar player this song is not "easy" to play
Exactly! DeMartini has phenomenal chops. That intro itself, if played correctly, is almost needlessly complicated.
Glad someone else said it ..that pinky stretch is no effing joke...esp to keep the riff tight
Facts.
As a guitar player myself, this is an incredibly difficult drop-D riff to play right.
Lol I remember in tenth grade (1980's) my buddy got the tablature for this and it literally took both of us on one guitar to "play" those opening chord shapes.
Ratt is the band that gets the biggest pass from thrashers and more extreme metal heads because the riffs are just nasty and the solos are killer. Truly an amazing band
I've come to think that Van Halen + Aerosmith + Judas Priest = Ratt.
Blotzer aint no slouch either.
The Hair bands that got a pass were RATT, Skid Row, Dokken and Savatage. Priest was also slightly hair but the Priest is the Priest
Truth
YUUUUUP
Dude this is LITERALLY one of the top 10 metal intros of all time.
Warren DiMartini is a MONSTER of a player.
Warren DeMartini is pretty technical, slick, and badass. The intro riff is his baby, and this particular solo was all him too. Robin was a great writer and rhythm player as well.
Couldn't agree more! Torch owned Lay it down!
His tone is insane espcially when Warren and Robin hold a chord together, it just rings out so beautifully.
Robin actually has the longer stretch copying Warren 3 - 8 while Warren play it 5 - 10.
Great riff and Yes Warren is a beast
@@donaldfoster5998 yeah, from all accounts I've heard, Robbin was a big guy so I guess he had no trouble playing those stretchy riffs. The rhythm part for the solo section is pretty tough to play if you have small fingers.
"Lack of Communication" is what got me into this genre at a young age.
@mikec4660 This post right here.. "Lack of Communication" is the pinnacle ~
Never was crazy about that song.
That's easily their best song.
I was into Ratt back in the day, but when I got older I found, to me, most of their stuff wasn't really "great." Lack of Communication," "Lay It Down," "Round and Round," and "Wanted Man" are probably about it for me now.
Still a classic 80's rock band for sure.
They would totally dig this song.
Yes! I was going to say "You're In Love" but "LoC" is better musically (and much better lyrically).
Robbin Crosby and Warren DeMartini KILLED it back in the day and the tone was beyond exceptional. DUDES A BEAST!!!!
I think he (Warren) was like 18 when he got in RATT!!! I saw an interview and I think he had to leave High School to begin recording and then they hit the road - touring!
The opening riff is considered to be one of the best riffs of the entire hair band genre. No cap
This music is another reason why growing up in the 80's was the best.
Best times a teenager could ever have.
As a kid, Ratt was my favorite band. I wore out Out of the Cellar and Invasion of Your Privacy. Then I discovered Metallica and it was all over. When I hear the old Ratt stuff though, I see why my pre-teenage self loved them so much. That guitar sound was so much crunchier and heavier than the rest of the hair metal scene, I see why I liked them so much. This video and the Round and Round video validates my childhood. 😄
Motley was my fav, but I loved Ratt as well. And just like you, when I found Metallica, it was all over with .
Same here.
Even Kerry King of Slayer admitted in an interview from the 80s that Ratt wrote killer riffs!
@@sayrerowan734 Same here...grew up with all of this and I still love it today. But then I met Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Crue, and eventually Metallica. Took me on a different path from hair bands, lol.
I had a stop thru Dioville as well
Yeah Ratt rocks! I think the gate keepers secretly like them and won't admit it. I think it's Ratt's feminine hair band appearance that turns off the "haters." Cinderella falls into the same category.
Absolutely 👏🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻👏🏻
Agree on all of the above
Ratt, Cinderella, Firehouse, Extreme, Poison, Warrant
Cinderella is so good it hurts ❤❤❤
Ratt has tons of good songs
The best opening riff ever. Warren DeMartini is criminally underrated.
When i first heard it back in 1985, i was blown away! What a riff!!!! Warren will always be an underrated guitarist! It was funny because I always was under the impression that Warren played lead guitar, and Robbin played rythym guitar.
Warren DeMartini is underrated? By who?
No, TF he isn't. Warren has been considered top 3 from his era. He's ALWAYS been a favorite of guitarists.
@@MrVacmag The only people saying this didn't know about him back in the day. Literally, he and Lynch were mentioned right up there with Eddie.
@@L4u84S noted. But in that era there was Ed, Vai, Satriani, Slash, Mick Mars, Sambora, Lynch, Hammett, Rhoads, etc. And most of those guys are probably mentioned more often among rock fans as "great guitarists" ahead of Warren. I'm not talking underrated in the guitar player world. Steve Lukather & Warren Haynes are two of the greatest of all time, but most fans of that era wouldn't even know their names.
"You're In Love", "Body Talk", "What Cool Jr.", "Nobody Rides For Free" are all bangers too!
Never Use Love has some amazing riffs on it too. Same album as Lay it Down and You’re in Love.
I love Body Talk!
WANTED MAN
"Way" Cool Jr.
You think you're tough!!!!!!!
I'll scream this from the rooftops till the day I die, but Ratt was criminally underrated as a band. One of the things that a lot of people sleep on when it comes to Ratt and their music, Warren and Robbin would often play two different guitar parts, but they would seamlessly mesh together to almost sound like one guitar. Motley Crue got the majority of headlines and fans through the 80s, but Ratt was just a better band overall (lukewarm take). RIP to Robbin, and I fervently wish everyone could just bury the freaking hatchet and give us more Ratt and Roll.
Crue had bigger hits but absolutely Ratt we’re more talented. No question.
2 different parts seemlessly meshing... it's something you just can't appreciate until you see it live. Reminds me of the first time I saw the Scorpions
Ratt was more hair metal, while crue was more hard rock, IMHO.
Ratt is probably one of the most under rated bands from the hair/glam metal era
They were good , i put them in the same category as Dokken as far as great songs and musicianship. Both bands had killer guitarists. The first 3 Ratt albums were solid , i wore out my Out of the Cellar cassette🤣
I saw Bon Jovi OPEN for Ratt in 1985.
@@brettteeter3461saw Ratt open for Scorpions in ‘85!🤘🏻
Motley was my fave of the era but Ratt has what I consider to be the best discography overall in the 80s.
HAAAHAAA underrated. They were one of the most popular bands of the 80's and early 90's. Another person who uses that word incorrectly. Let me guess Metallica is underrated as band too.....................
Comming from a hardcore Metallica guy...Ratt is the most underrated band of the 80's and 90's... they would play an arena one weekend and the next a high school gym... they rocked.
My sister knew them as Mickey Ratt before they were signed to a major label.
Warren Demartini is amazing, he looked cool, was a flashy guitar player, I was in high school at the time, I saw them live multiple times every tour back then. When Warren played a solo we were just amazed.
Warren DeMartini is a phenomenal guitarist! Other great Ratt tunes..”Sweet Cheater”, “Body Talk” ,”Back For More”.
Approximately 37 years ago I attended school in Lima, OH and dormed with 2 white guys and 2 black guys. The black guys, Anthony and Rolo, had a bangin' stereo and I brought a collection of vinyl with me. They loved jammin' this Ratt masterpiece. Thanks for the memories Ryan and George.
Music truly breaks down barriers. When I was in the Army, I was the only white dude on my Bradley crew in Iraq. I showed them rock and metal, they showed me rap and hip hop. We bonded over all that. I really blew their minds when I showed them Body Count, and that Ice T had a metal band haha
UNOH?
@@brentdawson6500 Northwestern Business College
Lima senior 1985 😂....so glad I'm I got out of there 😮😂
@@brentdawson6500I went there also... 93 Grad..
Eddie VH, Di Martini, Lynch and Jake E. Lee. They all partied and jammed back in the hey-day in the W. HollyWeird area.
Great times and many legends were created in these days of Rock.
In High School we would bring the boom box out and crank "Wanted Man" by Ratt during pregame warm-up for our basketball games. We thought we were the shit! 😂. God I'm glad I grew up in the 80's.
That intro riff is one of the best riffs in Rock and heavy metal. Period.
"Wanted Man" and "Body Talk" are a couple of other Ratt classics.
The first two pull-offs on the opening riff are impossible for anyone with a left hand smaller than an NBA center to reach. Warren DeMartini is so damn talented. I saw him in a very small venue a while back. I was right up front, about 10 feet away from Warren (no exaggeration!) and was absolutely floored with his solos. So smooth and so technically difficult. My left hand got sore from air-guitaring at the show!
There is another way to play it that revolves around the standard D chord shape that is an easier way to play it and it sounds pretty much identical.
The intro to this song STILL gives me chills over 30yrs after the first time I heard it.
One thing you said is spot on: Warren Demartini was respected for his ability & his tone. I listened to anything with guitars & my pure thrash friends always said: man those lyrics are corny or they're just "posers"....but Demartini is a monster. He was & is & is my favorite guitar player...even tho I matured & moved to a little deeper music in my life, Warren still tops it for me since he & Robbin inspired me to pick up a guitar. Much love & mad respect
I was big into thrash and death metal growing up, and everybody secretly liked the good hair bands for their killer riffs. I play in a death metal band now, and the other guitar player gave me crap for playing a George Lynch signature ESP until I showed him how hard he shredded in Dokken haha
YEah Ratt is notorious for their amazing riffs regardless of genre
Warren DeMartini was really underrated. Love the intro to this song. His sound was so clean.
Yeah, Warren is near the top of my Greatest Guitarist List as well. Seriously great player!
Carlos Cavazo is underrated too.
“you know why? Because Van Halen is fucking fly!” - my next t-shirt
Once upon A time, RATT, ruled the world.
I was there. It was awesome!
Let me tell y'all something, Blotzer might not ever come up in drum conversations, but playing this song on drums will make your right leg want to fall off lol.... that kick drum pattern is relentless and deep in the pocket. Killer groove.
Also very difficult to come in at that point of the intro, timing has to be perfect.
Coming from a long time drummer, I have always preferred Blotzer's grooves and fills to Tommy Lee's. Tommy is overrated and Blotzer is underrated.
Bobby Blotzer freaking rocks!!!
3:20. Actually this is one of those times where the riff is indeed more difficult than the average hard rock guitar riff.
“Lack of Communication” was always one of my favs for Ratt. It’s this x2 with Lambo guitar (D’Martini).
RATT is an acronym, stands for Rock All The Time.
And yes, Lack of Communication should be next
I graduated HS in 1980, played guitar since I wuz 10, been in many bar bands and still play everyday. Mostly just pointing out I’ve heard a lot of music and listened to the guitar parts very closely. The short solo in this song is burnt into my brain, easily in my top ten favorites ever. There are some nice licks and timing but the kickers are the way it drops in, the way it fits over the rhythm guitar and the odd way it resolves. it’s prefect, Beethoven level stuff! I kinda wish it had been longer but that coulda messed it up. I always imagined Warren just ripped right into it “off the cuff” and looked around the studio afterward and said “how was that?”
Blotzer’s drum parts were pretty tasty as well. A very underrated drummer during that time. Hell AVH was underrated as well
Warren is a beast.
Such good riffs and solos.
Ratt albums still hold up to this day. Excellent production from Beau Hill.
As killer an opening riff as this is, the groove from Blotzer and Croucier absolutely carries the vibe throughout. Just an outstanding song, perhaps even their best.
Yep. The rhythm section in that band was pretty much perfect
You guys have some of the best chemistry on the internet! 😊 Thank you so much for paying attention to the song and making intelligent observations. And most importantly, being open enough to let it affect you emotionally. I think you found the secret ingredients...😅
Next Ratt do "You're in Love".
Ratt went crazy in the 80's. Girls, partying, crazy riffs. This is probably their best song imo.
One of the best riffs of all time. Never gets old.
Those reaction boys kept starting the song over and over and over again! Instantly captivated.
Best Riff EVER! Whenever I hear the start of this song on the radio, I have to stop everything and pull out my air guitar! Thanks for reviewing this one guys, and the comments are right, this riff is damn near impossible to play!
Super underrated Ratt song is "Dance", one of the greatest stripper songs of all times ayy, put that on the list.
The bridge before the chorus is always at full blast volume for me
One of the most beautiful, melodic solos recorded. Wayyyyy too short. Still get chills when it starts.
Glad you guys are digging Ratt! Honestly they were a bit before my time but once I found them I got hooked! This music just oozes attitude it’s badass 🤘🔥
My first concert was Poison opening for Ratt. I always liked Ratt. They are a guilty pleasure of sorts. Wanted Man is right in your lane and my personal favorite Ratt song.
never feel guilty about liking something that is well done
Ratt gets marked as a hair band but they were a lot more. Just a very solid 80s band. Would have done well with or wothout the look. Just a lot of talent.
I FINALLY got to see Ratt in. 2017. They were freaking AWESOME! Lay It Down is my favorite Ratt song. These songs came out when i was in highschool or just out of highschool
"Nobody Rides For Free" is my favorite RATT song. Mainly because it's on the cinema classic "Point Break".
Tesla - Hang Tough is all the boxes to tick for you guys for this era. I will mention it for every rock video reaction as I have for some time now. I think I have now going on a year. So you better shout me out when you hear it and LOVE IT
Love Ratt! You guys gotta do some Queensryche.
Maybe Neue Regel...
To see two black dudes head bang to 80s hair metal in 2023 is the best thing I've seen on the internet. I love your channel! Much love!
I love you guys reacting to one of the best hair/glam metal bands and song of the 80's! It just confirms that Ratt music is still awesome and it holds up after all these years. Seeing you guys head bang to it really made me feel good! Thank you!
Went to see Ratt 6 times in concert as a teenager by my ticket stub count. Loveddddddddd them!!!!!!!!!
Great reaction! Do Ratt - "nobody rides for free" next! You guys will love that one.
One of the BEST riffs of the 80’s.
Juan Croucier is an awesome bass player and his high range background vocals add so much to the Ratt sound. The intro to this song is legendary!!
Your next reaction should be to “You’re in Love”. Great song! “Dance” and “Givin yourself away” would be great as well! Love Ratt!
Nah, real metalheads give props to Ratt and Cinderella. Killer players.
Ratt is one of the best bands from the 80’s hair metal scene
Ratt was the headliner at my first concert. 1986 or 7, at the Midsouth Coliseum in Memphis, TN. I was the ripe old age of 12😂 Loudest shit I had ever heard at the time.
The 'Out of the Cellar' album as a whole, was their best, but I absolutely love this song! Great drumming too!
Lay It Down's riff is actually real hard to play... it just sounds easy because of the GROOVE.
I listen to every form of Metal from 80s to Deathcore, and Ratt's Invasion of your Privacy album is by far my most listened-to album. It just never sounds dated.
The guys nail it. Their reaction is EXACTLY how i felt, hearing this for the first time.
Your next Ratt song should be... You're in love, or body talk
You're in Love is my fave off IOYP.
This song is my fav...but "Back For More" would be my next recommendation.
"lack of communication" is another great song of theirs
Several asked for Lack of Communication, and I concur. It's a banger, and would be a great song for both of you to react to. As always doin a great job.
Of all the 80's metal bands, RATT had the deepest, heaviest grooves - with amazing hooks that just get under your skin. Warren DeMartini's was their Joe Perry. He had the best of all worlds - tasteful note choice, tone, and speed when it was needed.
I was a teenager in the 80s and I hated hair metal. I was into Rush, Metallica, Maiden, Van Halen and ACDC. However, I always liked the early days of Ratt, especially their first three albums (the E.P. , Cellar and Invasion.) DeMartini always delivered the great, memorable riffs and they seemed more solid than the other hair bands of that time. And yes, I had friends back in high school who were guitar players who went to see Ratt only to see DeMartini in action so he was and still is greatly admired. Great reaction and also nice to see I wasn't wrong about Ratt!
I was born in 1971, so I was a teenager when the guitar hero era started in the 1980s. Warren DeMartini was in the conversation. He came up with a lot of cool stuff.
This song is definitely a classic master piece 🎙️🎙️🎙️🎙️🎙️💯✍🏾
This whole f****** album is fire🔥🔥
Warren is the guy that made me want a guitar. Being a little kid seeing him on video countdown on Friday nights in the early 80's and in music magazines at the grocery store. Dood wrote some of the best riffs of the 80's, amazing player.
I can’t imagine who they would be talking about that wouldn’t like this song vocals and all. Back in the 80’s this song was an absolute fuckin’ banger. Pretty much every metal head loved it.
An underrated Ratt song is Nobody Rides for Free, from the Point Break soundtrack.
There was always something special about Ratt. They were one of the few bands of this era when each subsequent album released was stronger than the previous one. Guitarist Warren DiMartini is one of the real great players of his era. Also, this album SOUNDS like a thousand sticks of dynamite!! One of the 80's best songs.
@1:40 it's actually: "cause it's so easy to forget, what you give is what you get." Song is called"What u give is what U get" on the Invasion of your privacy album 1985🤘
You should absolutely listen to: What you give is what you get, You're in love, Back for more, Lack of communication, Slip of the lip, Dance, Shame shame shame, Way cool Jr., You should know by now ALL worth a listen. Warren DiMartini and King Robbin Crosby were a pair of guitar heroes that are seriously in a category all their own; a magnificent combination of filthy cords, grimey/gritty/raw powerful sounds both artists meshed like fine wine & smikey aged chedda😎 It's literally what metal was all about from 80-90 and the boys of RATT wore that particular era extremely well💯👌 RIP KingRobbin💔✌️
This is the very first thing i put on my ears back when I was 10 years old
One of the best openings of any😊 song
In '85, there was Ratt, and there was everybody else.
I love Ratt. I’ve been listening to rock/metal since I was five and I turn 51 tomorrow. As I got older my taste got heavier but this song and their first two albums are timeless classics for me. Love seeing you guys dig it as well.
Great Reaction guys! I got to see Ratt live on this tour on New Year's Eve in the mid 80s. They finished "Round and Round" the clock struck midnight and then their lead singer said, "Now, we're gonna lay it down"!!! Great show and fun fact: Bon Jovi was the opening band!
I saw that tour in Tulsa, OK. I liked Ratt better but Bon Jovi definitely wowed the audience.
Warren DeMartini is a beast. Great guitarist.
Growing up and to this day my fave guitarist is George Lynch & back in the day I didn’t know he was friends with Warren. But I always thought that Warren had similar phrasing as George & I dug what he was doing. Mystery solved 😂
Ditto George Lynch and Reb Beach.
From the same album, the track You're In Love, is another banger that you should review.
I saw RATT in concert in 1985 and they were awesome. Outside in Minnesota in the summertime, what a great memory.
im 55 and I'm still play listing these guys......nobody rides for free is a fun one
Ratt has always been catchy af for me. Yall nailed it tho, might not be the most technical but definitely fly lol Dont sleep on Warren DeMartini tho ... dude can shred! Bless.
Yeah and I think he was only a teenager on this album!
Man the instrumental intro reminded me so much of Queensryche too, that bass and drums, idk. Van Halen I definitely hear in that too.
One of the best guitar intros to a rock song of all time, the best imo.
I’ve seen Ratt several times, waaaayyy back in the day- middle 80s- and they always put on a great show. I’ve always thought that they never got enough credit for all the good stuff they put out.
Been an avid listener of metal since I first heard Metallica at 12 years old and I'm currently in my mid 30s. I listen to everything from power metal to brutal death metal to black metal. Ratt are all killer no filler. So good. They're lumped in with the hair metal scene in the 80s but I just think of them as straight up heavy metal/rock (my favourite metal genre). Glad to see you dig em!!!
You guys probably won’t like the cheese on the chorus but “Never Use Love” has the nasty groove you love about Ratt that will not disappoint. I feel you.
Hearing this riff back in the 80s, literally rearranged my brain. Saw them live back around 16 years ago, they really delivered. They had a great groove, and amazing riffs.
First ever concert was Bon Jovi opening for RATT! This reaction gave me the cheesiest grin I couldn't get rid of!! 😁
“Way Cool Jr.” It’s got a bit of a different vibe to it, still upbeat, but guitar hook that opens the song is pretty cool. Maybe a little bluesy, maybe?
You really can't go wrong with any song off their greatest hits compilations. I'd personally like to see you react to "Wanted Man" or a somewhat deep cut in "Eat Me Up Alive". For the latter, RATT were well past their prime, the album was forgettable, but that track is 🔥.
Wanted Man is my favorite Ratt song.
Wanted Man is such an underrated tune...
Near the top for me
That 8191 compilation is a murderer's row.
Your guys reaction is gold, I am 60 years old and i was a teen when this came out and it took the world of rock by storm, and still hold up today:)
Oh, this is a great one.
God bless Robbin Crosby. Missed by many. What a legend. Long live RATT
Warren Demartini guitarist of Ratt was a one of the mainstays of the 80s metal along with George Lynch
checkin in... your in love and back for more 2 more greats
gotta do arguably their masterpiece, SCENE OF THE CRIME. It RIPS!
Just do an entire Ratt album. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed
Invasion would be one they would like
I absolutely love this song! My most favorite Ratt song! That opening riff is absolutely amazing! You guys rock I love your show! Happy new year!
