Building & Riding a FAST wooden berm

- Well, here's to learning to do something new! This wooden mountain bike berm is the first ever on Berm Peak, and it was full of learning experiences. Next time it'll look a little neater and go together smoother, but overall I think we built something very functional. So far this is one of my favorite home improvement projects. I can't stop going back there and roasting this thing!

To everybody with even the slightest OCD: Like this comment, if you would love to see a map at the end of every video, including changes in trails, new features ETC. It would really give us all a great perspective on the trail system and its progression. Peace
Vilém Vítek was just thinking that around the 7:00 mark, “ooh I hope we get a map at the end” lol

Yeah, that would be great.

Of course, it turns out great, Seth is the man 👊
She is probably on her period and thought you were talking to yourself with that great line.
I love your videos Seth they encouraged me to start mountain biking. Thankyou so much.
I really need to get back into that but I only like jump tracks and there isn't that much in new zealand that i know of

Same! I even bought a DiamondBack because that’s what he uses!
Jesse Rio I wish I had the funds to buy a new bike. I borrow my step dads early 2000’s bike when I go out and being 15 I’m unable to work to get the money I need to get a new bike.

After watching these videos my kids have asked me if I could build something like this this in our 1/3 of an acre backyard. We now have a 8ft x 8ft platform 6ft off the ground in our backyard! Next step is to add the ramps off both sides and a berm for one of them. Thanks for planting the idea in our heads! Now my kids are much more willing to play in the backyard. Keep up the great work!
Today, I Was Wondering Why It's Called 'Berm Peak' Without A Berm, & You Just Made It.
Coincidence! 🤔🤔🤨
I'm waiting for whooshes over here...
The last trail was “Berm Creek,” so he just made the names rhyme.
One thing I love about watching your channel is how much effort you put into everything. Even that model is probably better than what 99% of people could make out of real planks.
Your going to have a whole bike park I a year. Next video “ building a chairlift in my backyard”

Thanks so much. I love these “build and ride” videos. I’m not a big fan of mountain biking, but I love watching your videos. I especially enjoy the Berm Peak express channel - it feels more relaxed and informal and we get to see more of your personality rather than just mountain bike related videos (not to say that I don’t like watching you build features and jumps).
Thanks again and I will definitely be tuning in to future uploads.

I genuinely love the serious thought you put into your projects. From the small model to the fact that you dug in the planks so that there won't be an edge when the ground changes a little. That's some serious forethought and best practices that makes your projects really satisfying.
video idea: frame test. take a cheap bike and a good bike and swap everything but the frames to see how much a good frame really matters
This is a really good idea
Are you swapping everything but the frames, or are you just swapping the frames? Really makes you think.

LOL I love it. One look at my Avitar shows how much I love wooden berms. I've made dozens. The one in the photo (that is me on it) was built from scrapped painted treated 2x6. some of my best were made from chainsawed red cedar planks. The thing I love when transferring speed thru a berm is how you can get height and regain speed. When designing the berm you have to determine your apex and drop if you want to maintain speed around the berm. You need to understand your apex and at what point you drop from that height. Entrance speed transfers to height, and that height determines how far around the berm you can travel stuck to the wall. (assuming a constant angle) Taking too much height produces pre-mature drop off. The entrance then becomes crucial. Remember the entrance and exit must a progressing curve to and from apex. I really love a berm that puts you at height and maintains speed and height thru it. But the one in the photo was a right to apex and drop type.
Two things I see as issues for your berm. First; your entrance forces you to enter too low. If you extended the planking at the entrance or build up a dirt transition you would swing in wider and let you take your height earlier. Second; by reducing your exit angle before speed or height reduces you are being thrown to the outside of your exit line forcing speed moderation instead of a natural height drop from apex. That was the issue with the rhododendron. Fixing the first issue may fix the second. If you are going to huck off the wall you do not need that angle reduction. It is all about how you need to approach your next feature.
If you look at the photo closely you notice I am just coming to apex. The entrance was from a a mound pump/kicker into a ravine drop in and the entrance onto the wooden wall is nearly straight up taking all of the height as quickly as possible. At apex you are right at huck point (or brake check to roll) to drop onto the lander and immediately into a table top. Man, I loved that line. With the 7'+ of height having the speed to clear the table top was cake. Riders that did not understand or were leery of walls would roll at the bottom of the berm and have to roll the table top. It's all good. When you had it dialed that was the central feature of a 1/4 mile flow including rock gardens and transfers ending with a 25' skinny bridge over a creek putting you at the bottom the "ski launch" to 22' creek gap up.

Morning coffee, and Seth's DIY videos. Great combo!

You can tell Seth loves riding his own trail. Watching him have fun makes me smile :)
Braided fishing line makes a good string replacement when drawing the radius. It doesn't stretch, is thin and you can get it really strong.
YES!!! Killer, Seth, that is rockin! I was surprised the lower wall height worked as well as it did there (I would've gone higher/steeper, just not knowing better & I dig wall rides). Another one just like it (opposite curve) you'll be flying through that whole section. Super cool, dude! Keep up the great work!

You shoul add some dirt at the beginning of the been so it's more flowy
exactly my thought, i kinda don't understand why he didn't do that in the first place, it takes 5 minutes... we are not there, but from the camera angles it looks like it would definitely be easier and carrying even more speed.
@@mtb_ianek and safer
@@pedasjma23 safer? I don't think Seth knows that word.
Yep. It'll get added eventually I bet, just hope it is before someone catches their front wheel on the right hand (wrong) side of the entrance to the wood berm. Instant otb/face plant/ouchie.
A little bit of a transition in means you would be able to carry so much more speed into and out of it too.
Wow, your garden as I would say is really coming together. It looks amazing all of the trails you have. Keep up the great work seth🙂

Hey Seth, first off, I love your videos. I have really enjoyed watching Berm Peak being built. Your videos have also inspired me to get into MTB. I am looking at a few different starter bikes right now. Some of them are missing parts and I looked back through your videos to try and get some ideas of what to look for in replacing/upgrading said part. (FYI, pedals in this instance.) I know you probably have plenty of ideas for the channel, but I thought you might want to possibly do a set of videos on what to look for with different parts. I have heard you off-handedly mention things in a few videos, but would appreciate if you had something more in-depth. I know their are probably other channels I could check out, but yours is the one I have enjoyed the most. BTW, no pressure on this, just an idea I thought I would pass along.
