Oh wow how did I miss this?
I just randomly came across the video you & Ian posted 3 weeks ago Scott entitled “The 5 Greatest Basses of The 80’s” and I heard you mention Jonathan Maron, so I typed in his name in the RUclips search engine and this video was the first in the list that came up (great meta tagging btw guys 😊).
Anyway, just watching this video reopened my brain in a place that I haven’t been in a long time (creatively speaking) and it reminded me of the days when I first started out playing and discovering myself as an aspiring teenage musician and what Jonathan said completely resonated with me, as in school I used to amaze and dumbfound friends and other players that I know were technically far more superior to me, at the speed I could pick up a Bass-line and remember I was asked “how did I do it so fast?” and without hesitation or really realising the depth of what I was saying, I remember replying “I dunno, I just sing it and if I can sing it, I can play it!” And this is without having the greatest fretboard knowledge.. I’d kinda just feel where the notes were and remember! Maybe a touch of young arrogance there, but I really believed what I was saying, as my sister and I used to sing (self taught) and had great voices and great ranges (before I hit puberty that is 😂)
The point I’m trying to get to is this (and I apologize to y’all if I’m rambling - I have no GCSE’s 😂):-
BUT I FORGOT THATS WHAT I USED TO DO… Sing my lines FIRST!
As I said before; my sis & I used to sing but I could also scat confidently to anything before I could play an instrument.
Now the thing is, I grew up to have a pretty successful life and career as a session player, mainly performing and/or recording other peoples music and/or doing covers which has required great skill and discipline, but very little from ME creatively, which I’m not complaining about, cos I actually love playing to the discipline of good arranged music with great musicians & artists, cos as far as I’m concerned whether it’s a cover or an original, it’s STILL a cover to me, cos I didn’t write it, so no big deal, I love great music & great arrangements… PLUS I actually earn a good living from it too which is most/all musicians dream, BUT I know in my heart that there IS something that’s missing and that thing is CREATIVITY and I also have come to know that creativity brings true fulfilment to the soul, so thank you for your videos in general Scott & Ian, but thank you immensely for this one!!
I still think you guys have the best online Bass education channel. Keep doing your thang, keeping young aspiring and old cats not unlike myself inspired! 🙏🏽❤

Bravo!! The sing it first technique is one I use myself, such good advice. I read an interview with Flea years ago where he explained that this is how he came up with some of his great lines and it changed my life. This explanation is so much more in-depth.
One of my all time fav bass players, not enough vids of him.
A long time ago I watched a Flea interview he commented that before creating the line in the bass he sings it without the use of the instrument! I believe many bass players do this! Tito!

That makes me feel a little better. I like bass but I feel like I can come up with better material with my voice or a keyboard, since I am more used to them.

dude was a GIGANTIC REASON THAT I picked up the Bass... IMHO - the most under appreciated bassist alive today .. the GROOVE MASTER!!

Personally it's my absolute favourite all-rounder config for a lot of punk / jazz / funk and metal / prog rock. You get some chunky bass and mids out of the P pickup and the J pickup makes up for a lot of the upper mids and treble. You also get a monsterous growl with a little distortion chucked on top which turns what is already a beastly tone into the sound of thor's hammer.
It is like Holdsworth said, about not letting your fingers choose your notes for you, but a new thing from mind or heart... I rarely hear anyone try to sound like a chorale or Flamenco tune, the way Chris Squire did.
This lesson really tickled something inside me. I am feeling a renewed imagination. Thank you Scott. Thank you Jonathan

I call that having Robot Hands. during my first round as a guitarist from age 12 to 25, I practiced tons of scales, arpeggios, and triads, and the result was that I could not translate what was in my head through my hands. I had practiced my hands to become robots. So I would write on a keyboard, an instrument I barely had any skills with, just a way to understand music, chords etc. that worked.
So now, in my middle age, relearning how to play guitar and focusing on songwriting, I have specifically avoided being a technical player so I would be better able to translate my ideas to sound. It's working :)

I'm not a great bass player, but I started using a similar technique years ago in a worship setting. I call it "Be the bass player you want to be". Imagine what a cool bass player in your mind would play and try to find it on bass. A lot of the time it's got a lot fewer notes and is more rhythmic than the first thing that falls under your hands. It made a lot of difference in my playing.

I think this is a good approach for life in general. Imagine your ideal role model and imitate them.

lul i used it from begining. I always had great ideas in my head, but coundlt transfer them to fretboard. I always forget them. I started recording myself on the phone before playing. :D

Got the Yamaha BB1100S, fantastic bass. This was my first Bass and been playing it again on various styles the last year. The 3000 sounds great. Great vids as usual Scott!!

Hey, my 1st bass was a 1984 Yamaha BB 1600, also in vintage white. I loved the sound it it, especially
unamplified. I found out later that Yamaha pups were known as Fender killers (I love Fenders too) &
anyone who has played the BB series knows how good they are. However I found the 1600 physically
very taxing to play. After a gig or practice my finger tips to my shoulder would ache. Couldn't figure it
out, as measurements & shape was similar to Fenders & others which I found to be much more kind to
my hands, wrist, shoulder etc.!?! Anyway, I finally had the pups installed in a $129. SX Jazz & now it sounds
fantastic. Not nearly as nice unamplified, but that bass is still a Fender killer. No disrespect to Fenders....
And what about the mighty GROOVE COLLECTIVE! The band that cracked my head open musically. Jonathan along with Genji Siraisi (on drums) made history in the 90s.
I am so glad I am a member of Scott's bass Lesson's, now I get this whole course.

@@User-es2yz You still have it in your head. Your fingers aren't moving on their own, are they? You're just a natural that's all, it seems to come out of without you thinking about it, like you go from A to B by now thinking about walking, you just stand up and walk.
What does that even mean? Are you actually saying you can't let your hands move around to the rhythm, in the right key and see what comes up?

Did anybody here see the Alien movie where Sigurney Weaver straps into this Robot suit to do battle with the alien monster and she kicks his ass? Jonathan reminds me of that. He is this quiet, soft spoken, gentle guy and the second he straps on the bass he becomes this badass warrior. Very cool.

Oh shit, a Yamaha BB bass. I used to have one of those back in the 90s. I miss it now
Sound advice. I started to use this approach a while back when i developed a write in your head method and after seeing a lot of musicians, myself included write through the bad habbit of familiar shapes. Hum it, sing it, bounce it around your head THEN match it with your instrument, after which tweek and adjust accordingly. Also really helps when vocalising or playing it back in you head to picture where it sits with your influences but avoid being too close to anything but of course dont think too hard.
I kind of lost track of Jonathan since he bursted on the scene in the mid-nineties, when jazz -funk, acid jazz etc were really popular. Every serious bass player should check out the Earth & Heaven album by the Repercussions (also with Genji Seraisi who plays drums in this video), and albums by the Groove Collective, Raw Stylus, Maxwell.... Very tasteful basslines and all around great musicianship.
It was a lesson I learned on trombone. Sing it! On brass it made more sense, initially, since you are forming your lips to make the notes.The tubing was just there to help it along. But it applies to thinking musically overall. As a kid, I was singing along to Motown bass lines before I really got interested in Bass.
I actually liked the first idea better than what it evolved into. It sounded kind like something from Jamerson, something like the baseline in Ain´t no Mountain Higher.

Man man man, the legendary BB 3000. My bass teacher's main bass until he could afford to buy a Smith. Fantastic bass, especially the older, 90's ones.

I had to laugh when you mention that your library only had five guitar videos. Videos? At a library? Not a thing back when I was learning. :) I always say that my son has two things going for him as a guitar player that I never had--1)A dad that plays guitar, and 2) RUclips.

Yep - his tone is AWESOME! It's actually all neck pickups... he doesn't use the bridge pickup at all.
His advice on singing out the lines helps! Thanks Scott! (Side note: Now I've got to add a P style bass to my quiver. lol My wife is going to love that.)
Solid gold Scott! To let music flow out from you before your hand muscle memory takes over, really good. Btw, I have a 2011? ish made in Indonesia Yamaha BB 424 which you can buy very cheap but it has an awesome 5 piece neck, those great yamaha pickups (you can solo that blade bridge pup and it's phat!) and the bass sustains forever like a piano. Do yourself a favour, find one and have it set up by a pro. You'll love it! Keep up the great work!

Oh yeah I can confirm that about the BB. I have BB424X in vintage white and its my number one bass.Have also the new BB734A and TRBX504 ,great basses ,but that 424X is a freaking tone monster.
I love Yamaha BB models and this one in particular is very nice looking. Dig that gold hardware!

There's really a disconnect between vocal improvisation and instrument playing. Wonder how one bridges the gap automatically and not rely on soloing the first and recording it to learn for the second later.

I'm wondering the same thing, definitely an awesome sound. I just ran across an interview where he mentioned he sometimes uses a Devi-Ever Ruiner fuzz pedal, which kinda sounds like that. I'm wondering if that's part of the chain?

I know it is very hard to find a Yamaha 80's bb3000, and this vintage white is very beautiful too. I have a bb2024x white, soon will arrive a 83's bb3000 in red candyapple. The comparison will happens, of course. Want to know if te IRA and ARE in bb2024x turns the bass vintage like the bb3000.

I met him at a Groove Collective gig in Cleveland years ago because my friend was letting Genji use his drum set. They were both super cool! I was a huge GC fan and was geeking out. I told him "This is basically like meeting Jaco!". He just laughed and said thank you. We folded their merch t-shirts and I got to ask him about his influences, his tone and how he can play claves so effortlessly. He gave me his number and told him to give him a call when my band was in NYC next. It was amazing to meet one of my heroes and have him turn out to be such a nice guy in real life. :)
