Spot on. It doesn't matter that you can play a million notes a minute if none of them are on the beat. A bassist playing simple root notes with excellent timing is a better bassist than someone shredding through arpeggios and scales with no timing. I know I've played well when the drum and bass sound like one instrument
This video answered all my beginner questions! Im a long time guitar player and really digging into the bass lately trying to learn properly. In this video you mention that on the high string you are not bouncing off of the string but rather playing THROUGH it. I was wondering why i couldnt do the thumb up technique at all and this helped me solve that issue!
just found these lessons and fantastic .. 30 years and still learning.. 2 things though on this one - Check out the Larry graham stuff - He was a 2 finger pull of man, does give a slightly tighter "Snap" on the higher pulls also.. Flea's style is special as he "rocks" his hand to use both thumb and pinky to slap and middle finger to pull "Higher Ground" is a prime example - but as stated his low guitar position makes this to work..
Yes!! You are the man. Coming on 5 years now I have been jaw droppingly watching and studying your groove work Mr. Devine! I have watched all your videos over and over each one probably greater than 20. Thank you for helping me to understand the art of the groove.
I nearly broke my wrist years ago and have had issues with limited mobility since then. I'm hoping to work out those issues so I can improve upon not just slapping, but being able to play the bass in general as it's become my hobby over the last year and a half.
Man, I found some videos os this bass other day, I had never heard of, and I just loved it. Unfortunately it is expensive as hell. Congratulations for your bass haha
That marcus miller v7 is already a great give away especially used and coming from a talented and well know bass teacher like yourself will be an honor
The hardest part about that arm/wrist rotation is if you're a lefty who was only taught righty! I'd like to see Scott throw in a few seconds trying that rotation on his left hand. What a struggle!
Scott m8 I have been watching ur videos while ago and just wonder if I ever be able to watch all as it seems like I need a lifetime that’s how many hours on here and on SBL [im a lifetime member]. Respect for the work u guys doing here and thanks for the music. High five ✋
Steinberger spirit 4-string in any color other than black...fine travelling bass because you can put it in guitar case (smaller, headless, still the same neck size as regular bass).
the New World King at least he's playing Sire ... not only is Sire awesome but they have everything in lefty too...but a lefty giveaway I doubt will happen :(
Scott you are an inspiration to me, a pity I do not totally master English, to be able to listen to all your videos, I'm Brazilian and I always follow your channel, big hug
Prince learned his thumb technique from watching and listening to Larry Graham. Graham also uses his thumb to "pluck" when playing through and lifting his thumb again.
Scott I don't know if you ever knew this but I once read on an old forum years ago on the Stuart Zender website (I think), that Zender would actually use his whole arm to for his slap technique which he attributes to his more "thud" kind of sound. He mightn't be one of the more renowned bassists but his slap bass sound on the Warwicks was always my personal favourite, that said his playing was slower paced than most slap bass styles so maybe that's why it worked.
The ol slappy slappy hmm?😂 lol dude ??? Sounds like an obscenely, 🆒 technic do demonstrate. An amoon bass give away would be sick. I'm just joking that purple Prince bass like whoa, I would die for that.
Why don't you mention Mark King here when it's talk about regulare slapping and not double thumb. Mark King uses a angle that is perfect for this kind of practise and he has techniques that is way cooler then Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten visa versa, you must never forget Mark Kings role in history as one of the greatest slapper of em all.
I agree. I get the impression Mark King is just not cool in some circles for reasons that I don't fully get. I'm not saying this is the case on this video as I have no idea but I think some modern professional players think he's too cliched or predictable to mention. My goodness though 'A physical Presence' live album from 1985 has some of the finest slap ever on it!
A great bass to give away is a light doubleneck, with a four string bass an also a six string baritone, that isn't a neck diver, and, has double output jacks.
What would blow my mind if you give it away? Most likely a Warwick Pro or Masterbuilt bass like Thumb BO NT 5/6 or a Corvette... super nice instruments
Ultimate giveaway for me would probably be a Carl Thompson 6 String Fretless Rainbow Bass. Sadly, I don't even think the great Scott himself could get a hold of something so rare and wonderful, so id settle for any Carl Thompson bass as my ultimate choice.
Wish for a model other than the "Rockbass." Maybe you'll love it, but I found it inferior in too many ways to the German (and yes, therefore more expensive) models.
Any good bass will blow my mind😊 coz I'm using using Ibanez gsr180 which is very cheap bass for you and I'm using it for 5 yrs 😫😢 I really want good bass btw ur very good teacher and I'm learning from you since long time and thank you so much for your wonderful lesson and I'm getting better 😊
Oh... I think anything Left handed would be excellent. Like... A Kiesel ... their cost is the same left or right handed. Unlike some ‘other’ companies... just saying. :) SBL has been the best instructional course channel I have ever seen. Thank you so much.
I pretty much have stopped slapping and popping, other than to practice it once in a blue moon just to make sure I still can, am relieved to know I've done the correct technique from the very start. I just couldn't see any other way but keeping my arm stationary and rotating my wrist and forearm to get the speed necessary to play 'Get Up And Jump' from the RHCP. When I got Flea's first tutorial video and saw that I had the notes wrong in some places, but my right hand was right on the money I felt pretty good about my self taught translation. The dominant hand is often forgotten or minimized by all guitarists, but imo a strong and versatile pick/finger hand is paramount.
Which bass would blow my mind if it was offered? Going with the slap theme of the video I'd be tempted to say a Status - Classic or Kingbass. But personally it would probably be the Jaco relic Fender custom shop.
Thank you so much for the tip about slapping the D en G string! Just what I needed! At this moment I'm studying "Blast" from Marcus Miller which has a melody played on those strings, but I just couldn't get the sound right. OK. Back to practice again....
Bass I would like would be the Music Man Dark Ray w the L.E.D. under the volume nob. A Fender Jazz bass or I high end Ibanez SR etc , because I just love the feel of a Ibanez Bass neck. Just a couple bass's I want to add to my collection
Don’t give away 1 piece of super gear...give EVERYONE a metronome instead!
Thanks,
A drummer.
:-P
Don’t even give them a metronome, if they have a phone, they have a metronome. they don’t even need a phone, you could do it on your computer.
I laughed out loud!
Oprah is right!
A nice metronome would be awesome. It doesn't have to be expensive, but there's something about analog metronomes that are beautiful
Spot on. It doesn't matter that you can play a million notes a minute if none of them are on the beat. A bassist playing simple root notes with excellent timing is a better bassist than someone shredding through arpeggios and scales with no timing.

starts at 2:17.
you skipped the Attenborough impression?
Thanks
The Wadsowrth constant is in full effect in all of Scott's videos.
Thanks. There is a lot of irrelevant bull. Just likes the sound of his own voice I think lol
Thank u lol
A Carl Thompson bass! Beautiful pieces of art and monster basses.
Scott is so good, I watch the complete advertisements out of respect.
Bryan Hatch you’re wasting your time. He only gets paid if you click them.
Why is he wearing gloves?
@ Focal Dystonia
That's now how it works 😁
Here’s a Jaco quote Scott. “”If i wanted to slap I’d play my drums”
That's funny :)
The tip comparing the slap to your leg bouncing was really helpful!
Loved impression of David Attenborough in the beginning :D
Rickenbacker all the way.
Always wanted one. It’s like a work of art. 🤙🏻

Alembic Stanley Clarke Deluxe 1995 Rosewood or similar Alembic style basses

I nearly broke my wrist years ago and have had issues with limited mobility since then. I'm hoping to work out those issues so I can improve upon not just slapping, but being able to play the bass in general as it's become my hobby over the last year and a half.
How you doing with it?
The Music Man StingRay 4 Neck Through would be a killer bass to give away (especially for me hehe)

Electra jj bass custom (w/pickup knob & phase knob) handcrafted (solid purple heart/eucalyptus) w/full abalone from pickups up to the top of headstock
5 STRING Rickenbacker 4003 in Fireglo color
The hardest part about that arm/wrist rotation is if you're a lefty who was only taught righty! I'd like to see Scott throw in a few seconds trying that rotation on his left hand. What a struggle!
I'm a simple guy. I don't need a Fodera or anything. Give me a good G&L and I'll be set for life.

Victor Wootens Ying Yang bass ! :D
Awesome. Thanks for clearing up the thumb angle and the play through on the G string!
It's been a while since this video came out, but I've always dreamt of owning an explorer shaped bass 😍

I really like the lessons. Thank you sir. I'm just a beginner for bass guitar.
A lefty bass, we lefties don't get any bass
+about 1000 to THAT!!! … except that I play a leftie bass strung right-handed.
(Hmm … didn't think that through, did I?!!)
the New World King at least he's playing Sire ... not only is Sire awesome but they have everything in lefty too...but a lefty giveaway I doubt will happen :(
Not a lefty, but totally get it
I play a left-handed bass. I just tell everyone that it's just broken......
+1. I own 2 lefty Sires. they're my main gigging basses.
1966 Fender jazz bass would be a ultimate mindblown giveaway
Very instructive, as usual... You're a life saver for me! ;-)))

Either a Rickenbacker 4001 or 4003
Fender American Dimension Bass. It's a new design that isn't a precision or jazz or anything. It's got a new body shape too and pretty universal

Prince learned his thumb technique from watching and listening to Larry Graham. Graham also uses his thumb to "pluck" when playing through and lifting his thumb again.
That wide smile when he say "through that G string" at 9:00
