Dear Scott, Would it be possible to talk about the monster riff at 3:37 from red hot chili peppers - love rollercoaster ? Definitely one of their most hidden gems for bassists!
Haha so true - I can confirm I started slapping by watching Flea and had to feel like a beginner again for about a year while I re-learned the technique… great lesson! 🔥
Look everyone, it’s the worlds undisputed Most talented Bass Player, Charles! What are you doing on a Bass Lesson Video, I mean they are good, but it’s no Ultra Tap-Slappy “Stayin’ Alive” Cover. Plus, no costumes or wigs 😢 Charles, me and the old fogeys in this video are all watching your videos when we want to humble ourselves and see some real crazy Bass playing. I would pay for video lessons from you, keep up the amazing content.
It's so good to hear it takes about a year. I've been getting so discouraged when trying parallel thumb and double thumb because I don't get it down within a day or so.
This is one excellent lesson. You didn't teach how to play a prepared line but gave insight how to create any bass line from scratch. Thank you very much!
The most practical video on RUclips regarding how to learn slap techniques. And the video is only ten minutes!!!🔥🔥🔥. You guys do an awesome and are an awesome team!!!
you guys are going to teach a generation of musicians with this solid videos. you make something that sounds impossible really comprehensible and even maybe reachable, lol. thanks a lot!
What a freaking great lesson. I was just working on my slap technique. I love that you started with the very basic of the groove & progress to add elements that takes the whole thing to a higher level with each additional round. Giving us a way to practice that will see results 😅
Thank you so much! I was struggling with figuring out how to do the parallel thumb technique and after watching this video and practicing it for a bit, I'm finally starting to get it. It was like a light switched on and now I can finally do it!
I have struggled with slap despite being a long time player.I even did your slap excellerater course.I can't however get the good tone like you guys and i follow the advice like removing mids etc.
I must confess that I was feeling down cause the sound of my hand while popping strings during the ghost notes. Thanks to this video I was able to improve that and learn a new excercise... thanks for this Master Scott.. great as usual
That’s was such a fun lesson. You guys are so generous to share this and not ask to sign up or buy anything and for that I’m buying Slap Accelerator and want more fun.
The best part of this riff is that it's a great vehicle for executing trying different techniques. For example, i find double thumbing the hammer on most natural. Also, the double ghost on the A on the D string i tried both with double thumb and right hand followed by a left hand slap.
Great job at breaking this down so people of all skill levels can fully understand what's going on 👏 I have a slap riff that was inspired from trying to transcribe RHCP true men don't kill the coyotes and I came across something I really liked and just kept adding little nuances (like a well placed pull off) and eventually had a great slap riff of my very own to love and to cherish and to never let it go. (Imagining Elmyra from looney tunes) Lol In conclusion this lesson doesn't just help one learn slap but also helps people with their creative process. ❤ it
I'm on my second time through the Slap Accelerator. First time was a major struggle and the results pretty rough. This time I'm doing much better as my technique is much more comfortable with the mechanics. To me, slap is like dancing, it requires rhythm and flow.
I also started learning double thump 2-3 years ago. Now I can play it pretty well. But my main focus on bass playing is always learning the songs and backing vocals
Really well done. I like you guys build this riff up from basically newb to a reasonably realistic line. I've been working on my double thumbing so doing layer 4 as a double thumb ghost feels pretty natural now. Actually following this whole progression using double thumbing (except for the pop) is great practice too - especially layer 6. However, I'm sad that the one technique you didn't cover is the fretting hand slap which apparently some Brit named Mark King was good at. Maybe next vid?
I like the sound and motion economy of the double thumb better when I vary the plane of motion slightly so that rather than a movement that is down through the string then pop up the string, I go in through the string then pop out the string.
I've been a mediocre guitar "dabbler" since I was a teen and life happened so I stopped playing. I'm older now and have much more free time so I bought a bass to learn to play properly and you guys have been a huge help!! Love the content!! 🤘🤘
Well you guys just taught me how to slap. I wasn't able to do everything you guys did starting at minute 8, but thank you! I finally figured out the technique!
Just stumbled across this video and noticed that even when scott is playing fast, it still sounds like he has all the time in the world between notes. Very efficient movement.
Im new to bass.... Im learning upward thumb technick at the beggining.... More versatile..... It's easier for noob to start... Than change from downward to upward of the advance player
One thing all these bass slap instructional videos never mentions is the TONE setup. This is crucial to how you will get a clean crisp sound. If you don't have your EQ setup right, you will be struggling to get into any groove no matter your technique. I can tell you guys have at least the bass cranked up, but there is still some treble coming through too. Most beginner basists will only have an 8" practice amp, that does not produce the best slap tone. And all basses will sound different with slap, some will sound easier and snappier, some will sound muted.
Your comment is absolutely dead on. Some people struggle because they think tone is just in the fingers like most bassist say. Amps make a huge difference....and having them dialed into a particular style.
Hey Guys! I'd like see you guys breakdown "The Jam" -Larry Graham. Btw, thanks for the tips. Just found out today about the "plucking" technique from Daric Benett; His approach - more like a pinching motion not hooking which I had been doing. Can't wait to try these new tips.
I love that white Kubicki! I bet it turns up in the next giveaway, and then… it will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine. 😉 My slap technique is parallel (not down), but I don’t go THROUGH the string, so I can’t go back up through it. I hit the string with the knuckle bone of my thumb and kind of BOUNCE off the string.
I played slide guitar before I started slap bass. My ghost notes come from muting with both hands, but mainly the picking hand. But I can't get that percussive back beat. This was really useful. Interested to see how I finish up using it.
Hello! Sorry to put such a basic question, Scott, I can t seem to find anywhere the bass you got there can you please tell us what is that beauty ? Thanks!
Nice video. One thing, with slap I feel locked into a tightly constrained predetermined percussive line. Hard to step out of it and vary things or improvise melodically as I can finger style. Maybe if I was more fluent with slap, but it seems an issue with it.
Stunning! I've been waiting all my life for this, great presentation, the two guys work together very well. Very good, thanks. I have some Qs, eq and bass g setup. Is there an optimum action? distance between the string at 12th fret? Too low and I guess it will clatter and too high it will not pop. Also Eq, is there a peak in Eq needed, do I need to find the magic freq and set a Q, I guess there is some LF cut. Which pup is the best bridge or neck.
How long will it take to learn this so it's smooth? A: (I got this from meeting Joe Pass, the legendary jazz guitar player) It doesn't matter how many years you've been playing, the only thing that counts is how many *seconds* you've been playing. So, if you play 5 min a day, it may take you many months/years. If you practice this 4 hours a day, you'll have it in a couple of weeks.
Damn this is awesome, hardest part for me is probably the slapping through the string. I use the thumb up technique but just slap onto the string so wish me luck😅
I couldn’t read the brand at the top of Scott’s bass. Is it a Yamaha? A friend of mine from Indianapolis plays one like that on ebony finish. At present, I’m trying to forge a kind of hybrid style on my fretless bass (until I get around to having the fingerboard reinforced with boat epoxy) that involves no thumping with the thumb but does include a little popping with my other fingers. I’ve been led to believe you can’t do this on the Hofner violin bass (and have it sound good). How true is that? Has it got to do with the bass itself, or is it about the pickups?
I'm having trouble with the pops, moreover fretting the octaves, rather than the popping motion itself, I can do the pops cleanly after slapping the 3rd fret of the A string and popping the octave on the G string, its the pop on the D string that doesn't ring out cleanly even though my pinky can easily reach it.
No matter how much I try I just can't get that slappy sound. I'm starting to wonder if it's my bass. It's really old, inherited Aria Prall. Could old mics or strings be an issue? My strings seem so much stiffer than what it looks like yours are. Most likely I'm still just doing something wrong.. but can other factors play a part?

Oh man, that Kubicky gets my juices flowing!

God wish I could afford one, always wanted one since first seeing John Taylor playing one in 85

MAN WHEN IAN DOES THE SLIDES ON THE JAZZ BASS HOLY SHT THAT TONE
Scott throwing down a nice Stuart Hamm vibe slapping on that Kubiki. Great lesson video guys! Excellent job of building layers and explaining.
Those Ex Factor basses are killer. I drooled incessantly over them after seeing one in BP magazine back in the 80s
That lesson gets me fired up. What get me going is the energy that the two of you have. You guys work great together, keep it up, you're fun to watch.

Love the layering approach. Always wonder how and why open hammer plucks work even when they are non diatonic (unlike this example)
idk how you gents did it but I'm starting to get the hang of it *tears of joy* thought I'd never learn this technique
It's ridiculous how good these guys are. Inspiring.
