Wanna get better at slap bass in just 10 minutes a day? This stupidly simple exercise will level up your speed, technique, and accuracy.
Free PDF with 10min slap workout routine: www.bassbuzz.com/go/slap-daily
Playalong audio: / daily-slap-practice-track
2 weeks from now, you walk into the music store and lay down this SICK slap riff. The owner says “Wow, you’re so good at slapping! How did you learn to do that?”
The secret? This video, and 10 minutes per day of practice. This one slap bass exercise will help fix bad tone, worse accuracy, and worse-er speed.
This exercise has been tried, tested and approved by my students on the BassBuzz forum. At the end of the video, you’ll see how they did after 14 days.
So prepare to ditch your bad habits and get the most out of your 10 minute routine. Practice this exercise every day and you'll become a master of tone, accuracy and speed while slapping.
In this video, you’ll learn how to:
* Master tone, accuracy and speed while slapping
* Use the ‘teeter totter’ technique for slap bass
* Sexy up your slap lines with ‘ghost notes’
* Play 92.3% of all hammer ons
* NOT get kicked out of music stores for slap crimes

What level can you make it to? (without joining me in slap bass jail) 👋🎸
Level one would be a good goal for me. I've been playing bass since 1975, but I've never tried slapping. The music I've always played, mostly heavy/speed metal didn't require much slapping. But I'm willing to give it a try. Is slapping on a six-string okay. I haven't owned a four-stringer for over 20 years.
That one dude made it to level 42.
@@kel5944 LMFAO! ✌️
Erm, I have never tried to slap da bass, but this lesson might get me to try it out! Will let you know once I reach level 0.5! :D
None, sucking is my thing. i noticed that your ghosts where on the snare. is that a thing or just depends on the song?
One thing that is as sexy as BassBuzz's slapping lessons is BassBuzz's video editing. You are the best, guys.
And Josh's humor. He's so entertaining.
Your video editing staff are next level. The lifting up of the sheet music at 1:16 is a perfect example. So many subtle things that just get put in so smoothly in every video - bravo, behind-the-camera team!!!
I thought the same thing when I saw that!
6:29 Is wild
What have you done? You've made slapping so easy to learn that anyone can do it, and we are doomed to be overrun by hordes of slappers!
You say it like it's a bad thing. Have you heard Entheos? They're an awesome progressive metal band with an incredible bass. The slap adds so much to the guitar riffs. I wanna hear slap grindcore and slap trap now
@@heavenly2k Actually, I'm pretty sure he's joking haha
Davie504 is smiling in the dark petting his cat lol
Just like the incredibles. Once everyone is a slapper, nobody will be.
It's annoying, I was slapped the other day!
i respect both those dudes for sharing their struggles, big appreciation for not letting us learners feel alone! you guys rock lol so does josh
Props to Dan and Paul, it’s not easy to put yourself out there. We all appreciate your willingness to show your progress to help us all learn!
I just started learning bass by myself just a few weeks ago, I was struggling with finding useful tutorials online. After discovering your channel, I was flabbergasted by how you are able to explain every tiny detail just to let us get the right technique off. Thanks very much for the effort you've put into these videos, hope to see many more videos just like this! 😊
Hi Josh, love how you take the time to edit by using high lights ,especially on the fingers to show exactly what you are trying to demonstrate. It is a great visual idea.. never seen done by any other.. great video.. keep them coming. 🤟🎸
WTG Dan and Paul!! I haven't had a desire to slap but now I wanna try. Thanks Josh for another great video!!
I’ve been playing and slapping bass for 35 years, and seen hundreds of slap bass lessons.
Yours is the first that teaches what actually matters. Great job
I'm halfway through beginner to badass course and I cant wait to start working on slap bass after I'm done! Definitely coming back to this video
Don't commit my mistake, I was googling the exercises, when I got to "sexy ghosts" I had to explain myself...
Thanks for helping me learn some slap and pop, been playing since i was younger and now in my 50s and learning stuff i never did back then
Just perfect again. Thanks for the high quality content Josh!!!!!
Hey colleague...I'm impressed! How right you are with every word you say and every note you play. The lesson is very helpful and educational...if you keep it up like that , you'll definitely go to bass heaven after life. Liked and subscribed.
Brooo, I'm a guitarrist who recently bought a bass and I must say your exercises and explanations were super helpfull to get my first slap riff! Thank you!! I'll recommend your channel, and I just suscribed... Keep on those bass technique videossss
Signed up for the Beginner to Badass lessons-- so stoked! I love how Josh just lays it out there so clearly, explains so simply, doesn't assume you know XYZ so he doesn't leave you hanging. I wanna learn it all-- Slapping just got added to my list.
thx for teaching me in your wonderful course, really appreciate your work! big love
Thank you Josh for this splendid bass class. 😊
Thank you so much for talking about applying slap patterns to drum loops !!! That’s right where I’m at, I have some techniques, but I’m lost trying to solo to a drum loop.. you are the man !!!
Just started learning slap, thank you!
BassBuzz=GOAT! ✌️

Thanks!
Superb player - and teacher. Thanks.
Another great lesson!
Going to sign up soon.
Also, kudos to Paul for the color choice of his bass!
Thank you Josh, you are showing me the Way. 🙂👍
Great video, needed this
Yo, Josh! Its amazing examples of bass tones and clearly explanation how to use it!
Love this video! Great explanation, and very useful info to get started on developing the right hand. thank you.
Great lesson as always! Thank you!
Thanks for the tips, I just picked up bass. And these lessons have been essential for me. Didn’t realize how fun bass was until now.
paul's bass is looking fly.
Thanks!
Thanks for your lesson😊
Great lesson!
Great video ill be using this to help improve
sos el mejor explicando las técnicas y los detalles propios de la aplicación. Mi Respeto y saludos desde República Argentina.
Really good stuff. Thank you for this video and all your content.
I improved my slap so much thanks to you videos !
Excellent! Bass Buzz strikes again!
Człowieniu obserwuję Cię od mniej więcej 3 lat. Bardzo dobra robota, wiele rzeczy podpatrzyłem. Pozdrowienia z Polski! 🖐
Awesome info. as always. Top-notch presentation. I really appreciated it. THANK YOU SO MUCH, Josh & BassBuzz team
This is a great exercise and it's a lot of fun! You will probably spend a lot more than just ten minutes a day on it as you try to nail each of the steps.
Entertaining and educational like all your videos. Great watch.
Last thing I want, is to sound "super sketchy"! Thanks Josh, always a pleasure. Great video!!! 👍❤️
I really want to master the slapping technique. Thanks for your tutorial video.
Hi Josh, great video and very timely I might add. I’ve never really had the desire to slap well that’s a lie I’ve always been intimidated I guess. This video is certainly a big help. My band wants to cover a Power Station song Some Like It Hot and I started to newbie my way through it but now I have a good foundation from watching this and can’t thank you enough. Thank brother
Muchas gracias. Saludos desde Chile.
Josh is 6’7 and has huge hands so I was convinced that I’d never slap since I’m only 5’9 and have small hands. I was always self conscious that I couldn’t do it since I have tiny hands, but thru watching his videos and lots of practice I can now stretch from the 3rd fret e string and 7 fret g string and have been slapping more and more complex lines and fast lines. Thanks bassbuzz for helping me to get where I am now.
I'm a 5'9 woman with relatively short fingers, and I had the same fears. Watching Josh even before my bass arrived helped me focus on good technique from day 1, including using my pinky and microshifting. Over time, my strength and flexibility have improved so much that I can easily span at least four frets everywhere on the neck.
Still jealous of Josh and my husband, who both have long, elegant fingers lol😂😅
Thank you!!
This video alone is going to be my go to for my new standard daily practice regiment. Bookmarked, subscribed and thumbs up to you for sharing this extremely helpful Vid. So here is my Big proper shout out to you, "Thanx Josh!"
Love this video. I am going really slow, but after 12 days am on 5th level, and added double thumb on 3rd and 4th note of 1st and 3rd bar. well i didn't exceed 60BPM yet, but just you wait! I have completed Beginner to Badass, and am so impressed, that you add those videos, that help improve even more. THANKS!
Pure genius.
😮wow Paul improved so much he got his vision back
This is comedy gold and educational platinum!
Thanks for the tuto. Starting today, I will let you know if I succeeded.
The pop to mouse transition was suuuper smooth. Well played Josh, well played. 👏🏽 😂 & also, well played -slap-
Super useful. I'd been starting to 'slap', but all the different things you need to do I couldn't put into an organized way to tackle the subject. This is perfect. Perhaps and idea for another slap related video would be to show how to incorporate slap techniques into what would normally be a regular bass line.
Yay a new bassbuzz video
thank you!
It's nice having the drums as my primary instrument and playing the bass.
thanks man
Great, thank you ❤❤❤❤
Josh, I can tell you a month later after been practicing this exercise 10 minutes daily and other slap licks and songs I am a very different bass player. Thanks deeply for the guidance, callouses and pain.
That Yoko reference was on point 😂
yeah, noticed that 😂
I get carried away by the edits😅,Crazy editing there. Thanks for the super lesson.
Thanks
Wow, this turned out great Josh! Very good video, and very happy I’m not in it:-) Will add this back to my daily routine, it certainly helped a lot when I did the 14 days.👍
Your videos have always been really good. After taking a brief hiatus, I've come back to find your videos are now the cream of the crop. Oo0oo yeeeaaaaaaaah
Thanks Bass Boss ☆☆
Always a fan of the Not Josh tee shirt 😂
💯 bonus points for the Rush shirt in the thumbnail pic. 🎸
This is a really easy bass exercise, but it really affects my tone and melody. Thank you Josh for helping a young bassist (14) like me, you got a new sub! :D
GREAT LESSON!
what song is it originally ?
Slap-pop is my Waterloo. As always, Josh is a beast. Thanks dude.
This was precisely what I was looking for, as my existing practice riff for slap is very simplistic and isn't all that useful beyond improving accuracy.
Josh is the best Bass teacher I've seen in years.
Really nice video loved it :)
Awesome. And a nice gag at the end.
I wish you would make a video about short scale basses. And acoustic. And you should post more often, your videos are great.
Maybe Josh has a life outside of RUclips.
MARK B LIKES THIS VIDEO
THANKS JOSH
I'm planning to buy a bass, and the truth is you're giving me more reasons to do so hahaha
nice shirt again.. :) and good content.. as always.
Than you,,
The fact that I am an Artist learning advanced bass (watching your vids) and a video editor, makes me wanna end the video due to the humor and way of edits. HAHAHA You've earned a subscriber man for the editing and scriptwriting! Love the humor so much and the teachings. 🔥🔥🔥
Just the intro alone had me slappin that like button.
great vid, made me laugh too, keep it up.
6:26 you cheeky bastard hahaha love your videos
Yo, shout out to Neville and Loud & Clear! Love that store!
Hey Josh, awesome as always. I love the Squier VM jazz bass, I too have one in white. Where did you get the pick guard ?
Great tips Josh 🐸🍺🔪🔥
Great video (as usual)! Also, where did you get those aftermarket knobs for your J bass??
Love a good disco octave slap hahaha
5 days in, almost mastered level 3! Transitioning from the E to the A string is proving tricky to nail.
I loved this video, thanks to it I now know the name of the two techniques I was looking for: slapping and popping. I'm sorry if I sound ignorant, but are people with short fingers in a disadvantage if they want to play any guitar?
Great advice dude!! Thnks.. by the way...where did you get that awesome pickguard and control plate! they ROCK!!!
can you make a video on how to do your own bass setup? including good practices for changing strings and all that? there's a bunch of videos online but the teachers kinda suck in comparison.
I like the occasionally electric jaundice fretting fingers.
Also, Seas of Cheese is such a great record. I saw them open for Living Color in 1991. Never heard of Primus. I was hooked.
