Level one would be a good goal for me. I've been playing bass since 1975, but I've never tried slapping. The music I've always played, mostly heavy/speed metal didn't require much slapping. But I'm willing to give it a try. Is slapping on a six-string okay. I haven't owned a four-stringer for over 20 years.
Your video editing staff are next level. The lifting up of the sheet music at 1:16 is a perfect example. So many subtle things that just get put in so smoothly in every video - bravo, behind-the-camera team!!!
Josh is 6’7 and has huge hands so I was convinced that I’d never slap since I’m only 5’9 and have small hands. I was always self conscious that I couldn’t do it since I have tiny hands, but thru watching his videos and lots of practice I can now stretch from the 3rd fret e string and 7 fret g string and have been slapping more and more complex lines and fast lines. Thanks bassbuzz for helping me to get where I am now.
I'm a 5'9 woman with relatively short fingers, and I had the same fears. Watching Josh even before my bass arrived helped me focus on good technique from day 1, including using my pinky and microshifting. Over time, my strength and flexibility have improved so much that I can easily span at least four frets everywhere on the neck. Still jealous of Josh and my husband, who both have long, elegant fingers lol😂😅
You say it like it's a bad thing. Have you heard Entheos? They're an awesome progressive metal band with an incredible bass. The slap adds so much to the guitar riffs. I wanna hear slap grindcore and slap trap now
I just started learning bass by myself just a few weeks ago, I was struggling with finding useful tutorials online. After discovering your channel, I was flabbergasted by how you are able to explain every tiny detail just to let us get the right technique off. Thanks very much for the effort you've put into these videos, hope to see many more videos just like this! 😊
I’ve been playing the bass at church for almost 8 years now, and could never get into slap, there are some really good fillings using slap but every time I tried to do them just ended up hitting all strings, until last week I saw your video and is helping me a lot, keep up with the good work and charisma 🎉
I’ve been playing and slapping bass for 35 years, and seen hundreds of slap bass lessons. Yours is the first that teaches what actually matters. Great job
Josh soon will have 1M subscribers. Looks like all bassists in the goddamn world have subscribed to his channel! Thank you Josh! You are the best bass teacher on RUclips! (and yes, I did purchase your BadAss course).
Brooo, I'm a guitarrist who recently bought a bass and I must say your exercises and explanations were super helpfull to get my first slap riff! Thank you!! I'll recommend your channel, and I just suscribed... Keep on those bass technique videossss
Hi Josh, love how you take the time to edit by using high lights ,especially on the fingers to show exactly what you are trying to demonstrate. It is a great visual idea.. never seen done by any other.. great video.. keep them coming. 🤟🎸
Josh, I can tell you a month later after been practicing this exercise 10 minutes daily and other slap licks and songs I am a very different bass player. Thanks deeply for the guidance, callouses and pain.
Hey colleague...I'm impressed! How right you are with every word you say and every note you play. The lesson is very helpful and educational...if you keep it up like that , you'll definitely go to bass heaven after life. Liked and subscribed.
The fact that I am an Artist learning advanced bass (watching your vids) and a video editor, makes me wanna end the video due to the humor and way of edits. HAHAHA You've earned a subscriber man for the editing and scriptwriting! Love the humor so much and the teachings. 🔥🔥🔥
I'm an intermediate bass player but I feel like I have some minor picking problems (as I learned the bass solely on RUclips). After watching this video, I was somehow convinced that Josh's courses and a mirror (to monitor my hand while practicing) will help me fix my problem. So, I bought the course and I'm starting ASAP. I will edit my comment to help others to decide.
Love this video. I am going really slow, but after 12 days am on 5th level, and added double thumb on 3rd and 4th note of 1st and 3rd bar. well i didn't exceed 60BPM yet, but just you wait! I have completed Beginner to Badass, and am so impressed, that you add those videos, that help improve even more. THANKS!
Signed up for the Beginner to Badass lessons-- so stoked! I love how Josh just lays it out there so clearly, explains so simply, doesn't assume you know XYZ so he doesn't leave you hanging. I wanna learn it all-- Slapping just got added to my list.
Hi Josh, great video and very timely I might add. I’ve never really had the desire to slap well that’s a lie I’ve always been intimidated I guess. This video is certainly a big help. My band wants to cover a Power Station song Some Like It Hot and I started to newbie my way through it but now I have a good foundation from watching this and can’t thank you enough. Thank brother
This is a great exercise and it's a lot of fun! You will probably spend a lot more than just ten minutes a day on it as you try to nail each of the steps.
just started learning bass this year, I have a pj bass. I did my research on which one to get and I wanted to be able to explore the range of the bass as i go so i ended up getting Jackson JS Series Spectra JS2P IV Electric Bass - Blue Burst i don’t use the jazz pick up like that but a lot of old school songs call for jazz pick up tones… my next bass will be a 5 string precision bass the fender american professional you did a video on
Thank you so much for talking about applying slap patterns to drum loops !!! That’s right where I’m at, I have some techniques, but I’m lost trying to solo to a drum loop.. you are the man !!!
This is a really easy bass exercise, but it really affects my tone and melody. Thank you Josh for helping a young bassist (14) like me, you got a new sub! :D
This was precisely what I was looking for, as my existing practice riff for slap is very simplistic and isn't all that useful beyond improving accuracy.
Super useful. I'd been starting to 'slap', but all the different things you need to do I couldn't put into an organized way to tackle the subject. This is perfect. Perhaps and idea for another slap related video would be to show how to incorporate slap techniques into what would normally be a regular bass line.
Your videos have always been really good. After taking a brief hiatus, I've come back to find your videos are now the cream of the crop. Oo0oo yeeeaaaaaaaah
you are a great teacher and bass master player..thank you for your videos so interesting and allow to improve our slap...i found so difficult lesrning slap during these years...thank You..ciao, Domenico from Naples Italy
This video alone is going to be my go to for my new standard daily practice regiment. Bookmarked, subscribed and thumbs up to you for sharing this extremely helpful Vid. So here is my Big proper shout out to you, "Thanx Josh!"
Wow, this turned out great Josh! Very good video, and very happy I’m not in it:-) Will add this back to my daily routine, it certainly helped a lot when I did the 14 days.👍
You need low action for good slap. The people getting really crazy, you see they're striking with first thumb knuckle basically on the bottom of fretboard, strike through the string. their thumb often seems parallel to the strings. Practice on one string at a time trying to get consistent tone, then practice going between strings, and whatever this guy is doing.
I wonder how much the instrument has to do with it. For instance, i tried to bend a note in the harmonica for 20 years, and only after i bought a new harmonica was I able to do it
ok so what you might be doing is slapping in the wrong place. a lot of people will tell you to slap on the end of the fret board, but that just make the string hit the frets. you should instead slap on top of one of the readers with the bone of your thumb to produce a popping sound. i tried this and it worked, but if it doesn’t for you, search up a tutorial.
TBH I don't even like slap that much, but I want to learn because one song in specific uses it in some sections (Harlequinn Forest from Opeth), and also so people stop asking me if I know how to slap. Plus, it's never bad to have more techniques in your arsenal, so I'll try to do this exercise at least twice a week. Thanks Josh.
can you make a video on how to do your own bass setup? including good practices for changing strings and all that? there's a bunch of videos online but the teachers kinda suck in comparison.
What level can you make it to? (without joining me in slap bass jail) 👋🎸
Level one would be a good goal for me. I've been playing bass since 1975, but I've never tried slapping. The music I've always played, mostly heavy/speed metal didn't require much slapping. That one dude made it to level 42.
@@kel5944 LMFAO! ✌️
Erm, I have never tried to slap da bass, but this lesson might get me to try it out! Will let you know once I reach level 0.5! :D
None, sucking is my thing. i noticed that your ghosts where on the snare. is that a thing or just depends on the song?
One thing that is as sexy as BassBuzz's slapping lessons is BassBuzz's video editing. You are the best, guys.
And Josh's humor. He's so entertaining.
Your video editing staff are next level. The lifting up of the sheet music at 1:16 is a perfect example. So many subtle things that just get put in so smoothly in every video - bravo, behind-the-camera team!!!
I thought the same thing when I saw that!

Props to Dan and Paul, it’s not easy to put yourself out there. We all appreciate your willingness to show your progress to help us all learn!
What have you done? You've made slapping so easy to learn that anyone can do it, and we are doomed to be overrun by hordes of slappers!
You say it like it's a bad thing. Have you heard Entheos? They're an awesome progressive metal band with an incredible bass. The slap adds so much to the guitar riffs. I wanna hear slap grindcore and slap trap now
@@heavenly2k Actually, I'm pretty sure he's joking haha
Davie504 is smiling in the dark petting his cat lol
Just like the incredibles. Once everyone is a slapper, nobody will be.
It's annoying, I was slapped the other day!

WTG Dan and Paul!! I haven't had a desire to slap but now I wanna try. Thanks Josh for another great video!!
Thanks for helping me learn some slap and pop, been playing since i was younger and now in my 50s and learning stuff i never did back then

I wish you would make a video about short scale basses. And acoustic. And you should post more often, your videos are great.
Maybe Josh has a life outside of RUclips.
This is a great exercise and it's a lot of fun! You will probably spend a lot more than just ten minutes a day on it as you try to nail each of the steps.
It's nice having the drums as my primary instrument and playing the bass.
The pop to mouse transition was suuuper smooth. Well played Josh, well played. 👏🏽 😂 & also, well played -slap-
