Correct me if im wrong, but Better Help has been known to take advantage of their already vulnerable customers and provide little to no actual assistance and "therapists" who charge and who aren't even certified. A lot of other people have pulled out their better help ads and for good reason, and I think that you should look into that. Loved the song by the way!
There are some metal bassists who slap but I'm surprised it's not more... Metal is so rhythmic that slap seems like a natural choice and it adds a whole new level of aggression
you bloody bastard Charles!!!!!! LMAO! you're so freaking killer dude! Just so you know when I became disabled and unable to play anymore? All my abilities were transferred to you Spiritually,. LOL All I can say is Friggin WOW! Nice work man!
Yeah that's a great place to start and works vice versa too. If you're stuck writing a bass line to go with a drum groove, start by playing notes with the kick, then add / subtract from there!
Dude... That was sick as hell, that main riff was killer. I listened to this 2 times before I could post cause I had to hear the song again hahah. Honestly I could listen to, and buy a whole album of this. I'm a huge fan of progressive metal/death metal, and I think a bass forword/focused project from you would be so cool. Also the songs wouldn't have to be so short cause it wouldn't be a RUclips video. 😂 Cheers! 🇨🇦
Have you ever heard Dominic "forest" Lapointe? He's a metal bassist with a band First Fragment formerly of Beyond Creation. I think you'd get a kick out of hearing his fretless bass technique if you haven't. Cheers Charles, this was cool af.
I have a lot of awesome Bass players including you Charles, Henrick I hope spelled right, Davie 504, and many others including the biggest names in the music industry. You all make look so easy. I grew up in music starting playing drums throughout my school years, and my mom bought my very first guitar one Christmas which made her much happier without all the banging. All throughout my military service I was both here and there but I never really got a single instrument to lock on I always had something that would keep me into music so I brought my MIDI keyboard and went on get back into music when I was disabled. I don't have instruments at all but Bass is my new thing and watch so many bass players now it's crazy. Thank you, Charles, for sharing your hard work with us all. Cheers.
IF anybody else had ever mentioned such a Jason Newstead quote I'd just block the idiot. Loved it - you made my day. Still haven't got to the solo yet... still watching!
I know you just launched a new channel, but I'd love to see more behind-the-scenes of how you write original music and make arrangements and covers since I really like your style!
that moment when you realize you have asked a musician for a playthrough, and yet the did it a month ago.......... Charles this one is BY FAR my favorite thing you have composed! it SOOO HEAVY!!!!! no homo but it makes me eggs tingle
That Schecter sounds amazing. Fishman on bass is something I rarely see. I am a Bartolini man myself but dang, I need to try those fluence. Also love the piccolo bass XD
Charles Berthoud inspired me to post my compositions on youtube and even today I watch his videos with admiration. So thank you very much Charles and continue your videos, it's amazing...
This was an awesome video, Charles! It was great to see a quick insight in your production and how you write your music! This song reminded me of "Gates of Babylon" by Rainbow for some reason, which is nice because that is a great track as well! :D
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING AND UNBELIEVABLE BROTHER !!!! YOUR TIMING IS IMPECCABLE AND YOUR TECHNIQUES ARE SO WELL EXECUTED !! YOU ARE TRULY AN ELITE PLAYER IN THE WORLD OF BASS GUITAR MY FRIEND !!!!
Charles, you are too good, and I just want to thank you for how good your compositions are. They are spectacular, and aspect of them is underappreciated
Really enjoy having more of an exploration of your process and the way you think through your compositions. And it builds more anticipation leading up to hearing the full song. Great video!
This was amazing! Really upped your metal understanding and production in comparison to your older metal pieces (which were musically amazing as well of course) Amazing composition, i love you :)
After hearing this composition I'm adamant that you should do some Dream Theater covers at some point. I truly enjoy the creativity you apply when creating not just originals but also how you make covers your own. Keep up the amazing work
God damn. I had alot of bass heroes when I was younger, but over the last few years I’ve realized you are the best. RUclips videos are probably the money maker but you need to do side projects to get into the zeitgeist of popular music so you can be remembered by everyone, not just the musicians.
PLEASE PLEASE more videos like this where you educate us musicians. I know you're good at bass. I know you can make a music video and will continue to, but this shit is just awesome. seeing the PROCESS. It's even cool for non musicians too i'm assuming because of all the great edits. Keep it up!
I've been following you regularly for about a year or so now Charles, and I just gotta say as amazing as you are on the bass, I think your overall musicianship and song writing is just as good, of not even better. I've been checking out your tunes on Spotify, and it really is some of the best bass feature instrumental stuff there is, as far as your arrangements and melodies and whatnot. In those aspects I'd seriously put your stuff right up there with the solo stuff from Victor Wooten, Stu Hamm, or any of the other big names who do this kind of stuff. And on a side note, your videos have made chuckle more than once too, so overall keep doing what you're doing!
Maan this is some progressive metal evil crazy tune, i feel the mash between porcupine tree and steven wilson single project 😮😮😮 your talent is really amazing and how flexible you are in writing music. Always so fun to watch you bro
If you're commenting "slap and metal..." please stop. There ARE metal bands that have prevalent bass. There are LOADS. Love your vids, man. Keep up the amazing work. (:
It has been said that "Gingers have no soul", but you clearly have more soul than Motown! Love your stuff as always. I would love to hear you playng in a band or some co-lab with someone like Marcin Patrzalek.
Fab stuff, Charles! Amazing how you still keep finding new angles/genres/styles to apply to the electric bass. If I may, I have a challenge for you. Make a video playing a fretted el. bass, and here's the kicker: with flatwound strings. In other words the polar opposite sound of the bright roundwound sound we're used to hearing from you. Basically a more muffled sound. Perhaps even a hollowbody ála McCartney's Hofner. Just a thought, you pick the bass - pun intended?B-) Or, a P-bass? It's up to you. Any one else fancy hearing that?!
Put together a supergroup playing instrumental prog metal, and at least 1.6 million fans will be lining up to buy the music, concert tickets, and t-shirts. Do it. PLEASE! 🤘
All your videos are bangers. Seriously man you’re setting the bar so high for technical and creative ability all while remaining down to earth and entertaining. Thanks for the jam!
This creation is sublime without a doubt, as many say and I agree. An album with this song and all the ones you add would be epic. The audience is already full waiting!! Force!!
Yes! Charles, yes. This is the kind of content I want to see from you. Longer format (but not too long), and original stuff that won't get copyright struck. This was EPIC!
I love how you listen to your audience. I saw lots of comments saying how good the Schecter 5-string sounded a few videos back, and now it’s in every single one! Just shows what a great guy you are Charles
The pull back at the top of the main riff really gives this an old school Limp Bizkit vibe...bad ass none the less. You're a modern [fill in classical great]
You have to be one of the best few bassist ever to assist! I’ve been a fan of metal in the 80”:s. Cliff Burton for Metal Stanley Clarke for Jazz fusion Jaco and Victor Wooten too of course. Let’s not forget Lea Claypool I could go on forever. Slipknot, Etc. You blow my mind with talent..
Dude this is legit one of the best damn prog metal tracks I've heard in the last few years.. some Toska and Animals as Leaders vibes, definitely, but this shit SLAPS HARD. We need moar!!!
Lovely stuff. Very funny too. And your soft but evil section reminds me of Spanish flamenco style, which I never thought of as evil sounding, but it is.

only missing a singer from this actually being on the air. This was really good, Maybe Miley Kennedy on vocals
you should do a collab with Catarinth, he's insane and you guys could definitely make something sick 😎 much love brother
I can't say how much I've missed therapy with Davie504
I feel like you’re the kind of person who would love the band Dianogah
I need a whole album of prog metal from you Charles! This is absolutely top notch!
It does remind a bit of Dream Theatre doesn't it?
I have more coming!!
Like smashed
@@CharlesBerthoudI can feel the hype bursting inside of me!
Seriously. I listen to the doom soundtrack on repeat half the days im doing technical work. Id swap this in in a heartbeat.
Hell man. That was killer. Would be a shame that this track will not end on Spotify.
Good news sir it is on Spotify under the name of Assimilate
@@tsardean9192 well thank you. I wouldn't know.
@@tsardean9192 Not all heroes wear capes. Thanks for this!
Slap and Metal can go together so seamlessly. Love to see you showing the process of you coming up with your brilliant compositions. Cheers

Good example is Dig by Mudvayne
@@CharlesBerthoud Yeah! There really is a groovy complex at its core
@@ETOL17 For sure!
@@CharlesBerthoud Probably because it's so much easier to use finger technique, not everyone is as skilled as you Charles haha
I used to be a fan, but after hearing this masterpiece, I'm a goddam blast furnace!!!
Fantastic work as always, Charles
Amazing! *Puts iron inside
This man made me a wind turbine
The therapy with Davie bit had me rolling, best BetterHelp plug I've seen 😆🤣🤣

That was one of the best metal riff videos I've ever seen. Truly amazing, Charles!
Thanks!!
sounds pretty Dream Theaterish)@@CharlesBerthoud
As a hardcore metalhead, I loved this a little more than usual. 🤘
CHARLES. That was a spicy tip on matching the kick with accents from the bass line. Thank you for that. Your fade to black 5 string is beautiful.
Yeah that's a great place to start and works vice versa too. If you're stuck writing a bass line to go with a drum groove, start by playing notes with the kick, then add / subtract from there!
1:35 - 7 stringed short scaled piccolo bass looking good
Positively evil! Devilishly creative! This was absolutely sick, Charles.
delightfully devilish, seymour!

That man is otherworldly. Fucking love Forest

This is something DT would write during Train of Thought era. Outstanding composition and arrangement❤️
For sure.. very similar in sound to oldschool Dream Theater

The song was great, but I HAVE to comment about the intro for the AD at the end! Hilarious hilarious hilarious! Bro epic commercial 10/10
Mindboggling as always. I generally can't stand prog (i like counting to 4) but i would literally buy an entire album of that. Superb.
You are a beast on that bass man!…hard work done joyfully- persevering paid off!!
Shades of Ozric Tentacles (whom I always thought were prog metal without distortion in any case!). Love it!
That transition into better help 🧈.
I play the piano sins I was 6 but now I also practise bass (and I love it) because you inspired mee. You are a fricking legend.
I appreciate how you don't take yourself so seriously. Don't loose that please

Charles -- it's the first time you've needed one of these.

I can totally this in the shred collab this year. Cant wait
Amazing work as always Charles, the main riff reminded me a little of "poetry for the poisoned" by kamelot.
This needs to go on an album man! Great song, sorry about the not great therapy session lol.
Lovely stuff. Very funny too. And your soft but evil section reminds me of Spanish flamenco style, which I never thought of as evil sounding, but it is.
