Good to see someone else who is loving those black nylon tapes. I wanted them on my Pentabuzz to be more of an acoustic tone envelope, but the great bonus is that they get SO FUNKY when you dig into them. It's the secret double bonus.
have the same VHS.......a real blast from the past ...epic techniques on the man....took me for ever to learn some of them.....great tutorial as usual monsieur Devine
Man, I've never been such a fan of the P-Bass in terms of look or sound, but THIS P-Bass and the groove you put into it, as well as the amazing vintage look it has really blew my mind! Cheers from Brazil, Scott!
I've been a guitarist for 29 years and trying to also be a bassist for more than one year and Scott, my man, your videos not only help me improve my level and my propositions, but also and above all they open my mind to what music can be in a different way. Thank you very much.
Hey Scott, UK pal here, was wondering if you were thinking of doing a single youtube special 1 hour long bass teaching session? Would be awesome to see how you do your full lessons before I make the investment in January ;)
I need somebody to do this for all of Scott's videos. I barely watch his content (even though it's pretty valuable) just because 75% of the video is basically pointless. He always spends the first quarter or so talking about his giveaways and all his side projects. I don't know how the complaints of lack of conciseness haven't gotten to him yet.
If you become a member the courses and seminars are very concise. There's so much excellent material to learn. This is a free lesson and Scott needs to make a living hence some of the video is for promotional purposes, I guess. I joined Scott's Bass Lessons over 3 years ago and haven't regretted it for a minute. It's worth every penny!
Holygiant you are both wrong, there's *more* add revenue on 10min+ videos, either way that's not the reason for Scott's videos been like that... He has a website where you pay for the lessons so he makes the videos like this for you to want to pay for the lessons to remove what you don't want to watch
Excellent lesson...enjoyed it so much and I'm not a musician...have always loved the bass ...and hope to learn how to play one . Scott you are an excellent instructor and you make this so much fun and educational. Thanks for all you do to make your video awesome! :)
mantekabeatz Rocco plays ESP Ltd Deluxe prototypes. I have 'em in 4, 5 and 6 flavors...Sweet. Those basses are so funky they have their own language...Gruuvwahili...Luvvvvvv'em 👑🎸🎵
Mp Regencia I've only been playing for a few months, but it is awesome and fun and bass players are always in demand. You can get a good starter bass for less than a hundred bucks on the internet. That's what I did and after I was sure I wanted to keep it up I bought an Ibanez. The difference between the cheap one and the better one is extremely noticeable. I guess you could also rent a good one for a couple of months till you're sure you want to continue. Good luck!
Hey scott that was cool but could tell me what strings they are also can put electric strings on an acoustic bass your knowledge of bass and being a lutheir I thought maybe you might have some ideas on the subject cheers dude steve from the pool 😉😉😉
Hi Scott! Hi guys! Pleace give an advice how to get such a tasty sound of this percussive things? What are key setttings of an amp (freqs of gain)? Or maybe does a compressor makes all the magic?
Nice one bro, love me some Gary Willis, I think the first LP I heard with him was Dr Hee... got that CD around here somewhere. I'm trying some ghost notes today ;)
Scott. This sounds a lot like slap fret hand slap cupping ghost notes in slapping style bass playing. Only not slapped. Lol. Kool ghost noting finger style playing. Stanley Clarke does this on upright bass. Easier to do slapping though.
As someone who does most of their playing through headphones when the wife and kids have gone to bed, I probably use ghosts too much. I was wondering how you should use ghosts when playing with a drummer?
I often play ghost notes in sync with the drummer’s snare drum. It adds a little flavor to my playing while helping me lock in with the drummer’s timing.
Great material as usual. Thank you for sharing. One quick note, that lamp in the background beaming towards the camera isn’t good for viewing this video. Keep up the great work bro 👍🏽
Hey Scott, thanks for another great lesson. Why did you break your "raking only" rule when you "alternated" ghost notes on the lower E string? I've always alternated and fear the rake ;D
Good demo, but dead space is good too. Mixing both techniques keeps it funky and more interesting....IMHO. NOTE: If you aren't a member of SBL, you are a fool and you should take all your gear and burn it in the back yard...."or go to Scott's site and check it out". Either one. ;)
Your teaching is always so helpful. You have a ton of fans, so obviously you're doing a lot right. Sometimes I wish you'd talk a little less and play a little more... FWIW.
Then you understand that a thumb rest is above the strings so you can rest your thumb on it. When it is below the strings, it is called a tug bar. You place your fingers on it when you play with your thumb. When Leo Fender created the original P bass, it was with a tug bar. The thumb rest came later.
Scott, what are you playing for strings on the p bass you're playing in this lesson? I absolutely love the tone and thump it's got going on, of course I'm sure much of that is in the players fingers as well ;)
It's not only storing number in phones but the fact that they extended the dialing codes and apparently most people cant remember more than 6 numbers at a time ..... but yep Scott you (and me) are your our age !
Hello Scott. What do you think about the Ibanez Mikro basses and do you think the 28.6" scale length is too short to achieve that "true bass" tone? Cheers
Mind you, on another level, I was showing a student this idea recently, and I found it really hard to concentrate on actually DEMONSTRATING ghost note application. It's kinda' like singing out of tune if you CAN sing IN tune. I found that when I CONCENTRATED on doing it, the mere fact that I was 'thinking' it somehow took away some of the funkiness. If that makes sense? Also, you mention, Gary Willis, but on a less virtuostic level, someone like Ethan Farmer is good a this.
I've been screwing around with this for a while now but I keep getting tones when I dampen it out when hitting a ghost note. No matter what I do, I get like a flageolet sound! Is there something wrong with how my strings are set up or something?
Hey Scot, I just started bass playing and am building up my technique. Muting the low strings with my right thumb is working so far, but I have problems with the harmonics of the string i play when I release the note. Usually between releasing the fret with the left hand and touching the string with a finger of the right hand. Is there a special technique or a trick to avoid this? Im asking here, because the problem occurs heavy in this exercises.
Remembering phone numbers :D - that's the question I once asked myself. Nowadays you don't remember all that numbers because you don't need to. But I bet that instead you remember all of 30 your passwords to various services and card's pins :D
The sound that bass makes or do think it could be your fingers, do you think wearing gloves adds to your sound, I thing it about 90% you and 10% bass, you have your own sound does this develop over time ?
Hi Scott. I guess u have hundreds questions like this per day, but I see you're using black strings. Could u tell me the brand ? And which sort u picked? Thx! Nice videos/job btw! Love your vids.
Michele Puddu Touching the string at multiple points helps. Also allowing your fretting fingers to envelop the string more than you would when playing a harmonic helps. But mostly, it's just practice and knowing how to control the instrument. Good luck!

Next time hold your phone right side up!👆
Lol ;)
Stop being jealous!
Go easy....they’re just guitarists they don’t know any better
Rashy Doxx 😂😂😂
Hi Scott. Thank you for breaking down these essential elements of the funk - brilliant :-)
The most useful funk lesson on the internet. Thanks Scott😎🤙🏾
Man, I really wanted some flats or tapes before but the more I listen to you on this p with tapes, the more I'm loving the thumpy sound!
"I remember...I was a wild teenager out of control, and I was watching a Gary Willis video."
Gary Willis + fretless bass = magic!
Hey Scott, UK pal here, was wondering if you were thinking of doing a single youtube special 1 hour long bass teaching session? Would be awesome to see how you do your full lessons before I make the investment in January ;)
Awesome technique. I do a similar ghost note technique with the edge of my pick as I play
You use a pick!!?,...jk, is ok..👍🎶🎼
Not the same
I luckily had the chance to listen to and then meet Gary Willis at a concert, he's awesome
12:48 - 13:41 is what you’re here for. You’re welcome.

RUclipsrs get paid when they post videos that reach a length of at least 10 mins, so blame it on the platform I suppose
f1reyb1aze That's a complete myth with no factual basis to support it.

I love that bass so much
Excellent Video. I am definitely going to incorporate this exercise. - priceless!
One of most beautiful PBass ever seen. With matching headstock, great.
Funk is not only slap, check out Joe Dart please

Another great video - awesome exercises
Hi Scott,
could you do some tutorials on odd time patterns like 7/8, 9/8, 5,/4, 6/4,7/4 ? Or do you know cool drum playbacks to practise these to?
Thank you for the lesson!
Check out Rocco Prestia from Tower of Power, his ghost notes are funkified!

Very useful thanks

You can practice ghost notes playing "Charlie" by rhcp
I want to be a bass player someday 😊 cause it so amazing
Mp Regencia I've only been playing for a few months, but it is awesome and fun and bass players are always in demand. You can get a good starter bass for less than a hundred bucks on the internet. That's what I did and after I was sure I wanted to keep it up I bought an Ibanez.

Mp Regencia God's stringed instrument 👑🎸🎵
ONE OF US. ONE OF US.
Buy Ibanez ATK 400, super easy to learn, great sound. And keep practicing.
Nice explanation
Came back for a second watch after the little ditty has been stuck in my head all day.
super useful song to learn this technique is Vulfpecks Beastly. That song taught me the art of ghost notes. Sorry for commenting on such an old video😂
this video is so benefical video thank you :D
This video is proof that this is the funnest guy on the planet
Hey scott that was cool but could tell me what strings they are also can put electric strings on an acoustic bass your knowledge of bass and being a lutheir I thought maybe you might have some ideas on the subject cheers dude steve from the pool 😉😉😉
07:30 OH MY WORD!!!! That's how!!!!!
Awesome. Good work. Go ahead with the chanell.
THANK YOU... SO COOL
YEEEAAAARRS!!! I already figured this out before I knew Gary Willis!!!
Hi Scott! Hi guys!
Pleace give an advice how to get such a tasty sound of this percussive things? What are key setttings of an amp (freqs of gain)? Or maybe does a compressor makes all the magic?
Ill start working on this!!!!
thats one of the nicest basses ive ever seen, what type of fender is that?
Nice one bro, love me some Gary Willis, I think the first LP I heard with him was Dr Hee... got that CD around here somewhere. I'm trying some ghost notes today ;)

Your P makes me cry for my passing on a similar pawn shop prize...for cheap.
Wrapped strings sound fab.
Nice guy scoot
Mark king is another great example of this technique.
you're so accomplished..... i'm sick with jealousy... thank you.
Cool when playing alone or on a solo but get lost with a band just like left hand slap .
Like most bass playing, sometimes with the drummer, other times playing off the drummer. Whatever works for the song.
Greetings from colombia my friend...
Great material as usual. Thank you for sharing.
One quick note, that lamp in the background beaming towards the camera isn’t good for viewing this video. Keep up the great work bro 👍🏽
what bass amplifier do you have? 10-15 inch in size. Nice sound. I sub.
Dude I was just talking to someone about how in awe I was that I used to memorize phone numbers. I've barely got mine and my wife's.
"Do Re Mi Fa So" -> You just revealed yourself...! 😀
Hey Scott, thanks for another great lesson. Why did you break your "raking only" rule when you "alternated" ghost notes on the lower E string? I've always alternated and fear the rake ;D

Bernard Edwards with Chic- My Feet keep Dancing. Ghost notes sound so sweet. S.I.P. Mr Edwards. *-----Q-----*
Your teaching is always so helpful. You have a ton of fans, so obviously you're doing a lot right. Sometimes I wish you'd talk a little less and play a little more... FWIW.
thx bass guru.
I see you're still digging the tapewounds.
I'm using the same strings as you! How are you liking those LaBella tapes?
Successful shed negotiations, eh? Nice
quick question, i understand thumb rests and their uses but i don't understand the placement of them on p basses like yours where is below the strings
Then you understand that a thumb rest is above the strings so you can rest your thumb on it. When it is below the strings, it is called a tug bar. You place your fingers on it when you play with your thumb. When Leo Fender created the original P bass, it was with a tug bar. The thumb rest came later.
thank you, that really puts my mind at rest XD
Scott, what are you playing for strings on the p bass you're playing in this lesson? I absolutely love the tone and thump it's got going on, of course I'm sure much of that is in the players fingers as well ;)
David Dupuis they're tapewound strings bud
Anthony Attwood sweet! Thanks for the info.
It's not only storing number in phones but the fact that they extended the dialing codes and apparently most people cant remember more than 6 numbers at a time ..... but yep Scott you (and me) are your our age !

Thanks man always , big hi from morocco . Hope to visit us here to inspirate .
sounds groovy '
Hey Scott,
I was wondering if you play any p basses with a maple fretboard? Everyone I've seen in your videos has rosewood?
If you look in the background of this video, to Scott's left, you can see one of his P basses with a maple fretboard
That one right in the beginning of the video? I believe that is a J style bass. The one he is often playing in slap videos. I may be wrong though...
Thanks, but I think that you mean to Scott's right.
You are right, it's an Overwater bass with J-bass pickup configuration.
What happened with your E string bridge saddle?
What you didn't mention Scott is to be careful not to mute the ghost notes with only one finger or you'll have harmonics ringing out every where
I've been screwing around with this for a while now but I keep getting tones when I dampen it out when hitting a ghost note. No matter what I do, I get like a flageolet sound! Is there something wrong with how my strings are set up or something?
Hi, what strings are you using here? Greetings from Norway
Are those nylon wrapped strings on your fender?
Derek Hart they look like DR Black Beauties to me.
What kind of gloves do you use?
Strings at the intro?
How many bass guitars do you have?
Remembering phone numbers :D - that's the question I once asked myself. Nowadays you don't remember all that numbers because you don't need to. But I bet that instead you remember all of 30 your passwords to various services and card's pins :D
First question everytime: When does it start?
Do you play any other type of guitar? I'm curious 😁
Like so many of us who eventually saw the light.
samringwald it's nice to be both, but I prefer bass over guitar tbh
I can play drums after a fashion and it totally improves your timing.
The sound that bass makes or do think it could be your fingers, do you think wearing gloves adds to your sound, I thing it about 90% you and 10% bass, you have your own sound does this develop over time ?
Are those black nylon strings?
Black nylon tape wound
Damn I need to get some tape wounds
Learning to play Rio help me some what
Hi Scott. I guess u have hundreds questions like this per day, but I see you're using black strings. Could u tell me the brand ? And which sort u picked? Thx!
Nice videos/job btw! Love your vids.
Thx man !
How do you avoid making harmonics instead of ghost notes?
Michele Puddu
Touching the string at multiple points helps. Also allowing your fretting fingers to envelop the string more than you would when playing a harmonic helps.
But mostly, it's just practice and knowing how to control the instrument. Good luck!
Ghost notes. . . They haunt me.
Scary stuff...mycophile for life.
Hi ur awesome
I thought you were gonna start playing Captain Hook at first
I do not understand a shit about what you say, because I do not speak English, but man!! you are very great !!
Teach us to play like Claypool!
..not asking for much.
