    I've been flipping for about 2 years and I can say the best way to learn tricks is by breaking down the tricks into small parts and mastering them before attempting the full trick and then mastering that. What's important is consistency, constant drilling of the trick, and learning the trick right. If you teach yourself the trick wrong it could hurt you in the future if you attempt it on a live blade. Remember practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.

    I was thinking of learning balisong flipping like karate dojos do with karate.
    A certain set of moves is put in a certain order is called a Kata so something like your basic rollover combo would be kata 1, then you add more to it to make it kata 2 and so on.
    So for example if you wanted to learn the choker fan or become better at the choker, your choker fan totorial is kata 1, doing a fan first before the choker is kata 2, rollover then choker would be kata 3, etc.
    I think it would be a good method but I'm not sure

    Hi Will I have a question that I haven't really seen explored. I was interested in balisong flipping as an artform for a really long time. The reason I didn't get into it sooner was that the default is to use a live blade, and if you don't there is an assumed diminishing of the skills you are showing. Having done other types of prop manipulation (think juggling pistol flourishing etc) one of the main tenets is to remove as much danger as possible especially when performing for a crowd. At its core flipping a live blade is still essentially manipulating a weapon with the ability to cause severe bodily harm. How do you feel about this from an ethical level and can you express your feelings on live blade gatekeeping/superiority complex? Is there something you appreciate significantly more about flipping live blades that make it worth the risks?

    • @WillHirschFlips
      @WillHirschFlips  2 года назад +3

      Not really! Both live blades and trainers are great. For me, carrying a live blade is mostly for the utility of having one to use and also being able to flip and enjoy it.
      Also yes I did do juggling stuff before!

      I’m not Will, but for me, it’s about the thrill. It’s not really more dangerous at all, you might need a bandaid, but it’s just more fun IMO. But I love flipping my Squiddy as well and not really caring about anything and doing dumb stuff I would do with a live blade. If you’re having fun, you’re succeeding basically.

    Maybe when you put the video about fanning, you could add in a little section about hand strength or how to build strength with your fingers? I'm a new flipper and I'm having a hell of a time trying to fan and I feel the strain on my muscles, espcially around the thumb, after trying to get the balisong to spin or trying to keep the balisong in a grip that isn't using my thumb. Not sure if it's a 'you will just build it up over time' thing or because it's not so constantly used, you have to go out of your way to build strength in parts of your hand.
    Love the tips and glad to know I was mostly going in the right direction.

    When Will was talking about getting live blades in the future, I started to move my feet out of the way because I wanted to get a live blade in the future. 2 weeks later, while flipping, I suddenly realised that live-blade balisongs are illegal in the UK, that made me sad. I really enjoy the videos, looking forward to see where both channels go in the future :)

      Having grown up with guns and knives, I can't imagine as a law abiding citizen not having them. Some of our liberal States would like us to be like the UK. No thanks, I'll continue to live in safe States where you can protect yourself. When seconds count the police are minutes away.

    Hey will. Thanks for detailing your flow. I was curious about the tricks you did. Especially that rollover with the throw and ice pick catch.
    I'm sure someone has said it. But the trick you couldn't remember the name of was the full twirl. I was just practicing it last night
