Lio convoy, big convoy and optimus primal are continuing the tradition of each commander of either the autobots or the maximals picking up where the previous left off, this is why i always loved the japanese beast wars
as a fan of the japanese beast wars and the japanese series in general, lio convoy was probably the best part of it,his unique heroic personality and honorable skills is the reason,i hope if hasbro can add lio convoy to the american beast wars lore
I really enjoy the idea of the convoy's, because it means that you can do what Animated did where Prime was a rank held multiple people, while still maintaining the prime rank as special. Anyway, even though I haven't got around to watching the Japanese Beast Wars shows, something about Lio Convoy just makes me really fascinated with him. One of my favorite Lio Convoy appearances would definitely have to be Beast Wars uprising though.
I Headcanon that the Convoy where Generals (Second in Commands to a Prime or the Leaders of their own Colonies) and that their Matrix is a Copy of Primus' Matrix (weaker but still a Matrix) Where ii is used the name Convoy would have been chosen in honor of Optimus as (for my headcanon) it was the name he used after being almost killed by Megatron and before finding the Matrix (merging both origins stories) Basically Orion Pax->Convoy->Optimus Prime But in some universes (like in Transformers Prime) Optimus never used the Convoy title and directly used the Prime one (probably there Convoy where already know as Primes) Ps: according to my Headcanon the Convoys always existed since the time of the Originals 13th Primes but before Convoy/Optimus they didn't have a Title and some of them called themselves or where called with the Prime's title
With the five-year anniversary of "Transformers: The Basics" fast approaching, I think it'd be neat to see a few episodes focusing on updates to characters and concepts that you've already covered, sort of a "Where are they now?" type of thing. I'm sure there are quite a few characters you covered in the first couple years who've had new versions show up in the comics, movies, TV shows, and especially the toylines. I think it'd be a fun way to look back at the last five years, even for newer fans like myself. 🙂 ETA: I forgot to mention that what I had in mind would be multiple updates in each episode, not entire additional episodes for specific characters. I'm sure there wouldn't be enough new material for solo episodes, but they could easily be grouped together to fill the runtime. 😄
I have always loves Lio Convoys design, it’s been one of my favorites. However as an American iv never been graced with the story behind Lio Convoy, and after watching your video on it, He is now one of my new favorite characters in the whole franchise. Thank you man!
It's been a while, but I remember seeing a few episodes of "Beast Wars II" on RUclips, mostly because I was curious about the beast modes they would provide. Lio Convoy definitely had one of the best designs and I like the idea of him learning to become a father figure for the young lion Maximal.
To be fair it was kind of a low bar, since most of the BW2 characters were recolors/repurposing of already existing toys, some going as far back as G1.
I literally just finished watching through Beast Wars II with my son last week. This was a very timely episode for us! :) I wasn't aware that his adventures continued via the toy bios for his other figures. Love it!
Lio Convoy is my personal favorite beast wars take on optimus prime and leader of the autobots. Just to me I think that a primes beast mode should be a lion. Just seems to fit.
I agree. I love cats and transformers so I’d like to see Optimus Prime as a lion in a Beast Wars continuation or Transformers g3 or something cool as an Autobot or Maximal Commander with a team of bots against a new type of Megatron and Decepticons or Predators. Kinda like Leobreaker when he combines with Optimus Prime to form Savage Claw Mode but he’s his own big boss bot just like any other Prime
Lio Convoy travelling to the universe of Transformers Prime could have something to do with how both shows revolve around Unicron's energy as a main plot point. Angolmois in BW2, Dark Energon in Prime.
The Convoy rank is definitely something I would like to see returning to TF shows and such. Not just specifically Maximals like Lio Convoy, though I would like to see him return to TF cartoons as well, but just a lineup of Autobot commanders that lead separate teams of Autobots. It may seem unlikely, since Hasbro and Takara bring a more spiritual or ancestral nature to the Primes in current cartoons and such, but it something interesting that’d be a good idea to explore.
Could you do a Basics for the following: (don't worry, I learned my lesson, I won't post this on every video) Cybertron- The world of the transformers Outliers: Transformers with unique abilities and superpowers. Multiverse/Universal Streams: Multiverses are popular these days The Coneheads: I’m honestly curious about them Death’s Head: The link between Transformers and Doctor Who Rescue Bots: Roll to the rescue!
Lio Convoy/Leo Prime is someone who would really fit in Legacy since it's story tells how other TF characters are coming from various timelines. I'll say that his Takara TFP toy is something I would like to have, ready sticker-ed of course.
Always great to see Beast Wars content. Perhaps the most interesting aspect for me here is how the relationship of Lio Convoy and Lio Jr was handled. The closest comparison I can think of is Sixshot and Quickswitch, though their father/son connection has never been truly explained, I think.
The Beast's Convoy's always have the spirit of the navie leader, similar Rodimus, but in a different way. All the time, i have that same vive from them. Seems like these Convoy are Primes, but not a Prime itself. I don't know why. It's a strange feeling, i know. But je les aimes. 🤣
My favorite The Basics episode. I was hoping for years that we would get a chug Star Saber. With the recent Haslab Victory Saber on the horizon. Here's hoping they do a chug Lio Convoy (with kingdom styled alt mode) in the near future.
An update for Lio Convoy/Leo Prime: 2022, he was revealed as a mainline voyager class figure for the Legacy Evolution line for 2023 which has now been released but a bit difficult to find him as well as Tarn.
I kinda love the idea of Beast Wars 2 being a Japanese construct of an American product that was a cannibalization of a Japanese product. It's like making a Sentai show based on Power Rangers.
Kamen Rider didi this already, the Japanese public loved Dragon Knight so much that they got exclusive books, games and a Movie cameo I I'm not mistaken
even I never have watch the Japanese Beast Wars, Lio Convoy is one of those designs that popular that you ended see him in multiple illustrations, clips and fan arts all over the web, and this is one badass design indeed.
I always loved the japanese beast wars, lio convoy and galvatron is always my fan favourite characters from that series, and they are a great takara toys,i honestly support the legith north american release of bwii and neo or BRD
Just rewatched the episode “Make Tracks” and I looks to me like the lifeless drones that Megatron created from stolen cars may just be the first appearance on the VEHICONS. I think they’d make a cool episode
Fun fact: Lio Convoy also made an appearance in a BotCon script reading named "The Hot Rod", set in the same continuity as the IDW Beast Wars comics. He was played by David Kaye during the reading, who did a voice similar to his "Animated" Optimus Prime, and was accompanied by "Neo" protagonist Big Convoy (played by Gregg Berger) and original character Legend Convoy (played by Venus Terzo).
I also wanna throw out there that the design for Lio Convoy was reused for the combination form of Optimus and Leobreaker and the few other subsequent combinations in Transformers: Cybertron
As a big fan of BW2 i cant tell how happy i am you are making lio convoy! I hope you make more of them even if...there isnt much content about them çvç Keep the amazing work! Have a nice day!!

Awesome profile on LioConvoy. While I don't have patreon, I do love watching The Basics on Satrudays, like I would if I was watching cartoons in the morning.
My favorite Beast Wars and Transformers character was Lio Convoy who is the leader and Commander-In-Chief of great authority and dignity in the Maximals he's also behind the gruff lurks an individual of great heart honor and humor but also Lio is leader of the Maximals Subgroup The Pack, also Lio carries with him a Energon Matrix empowering him with primal forces from the very core of Cybertron, also thanks for sharing Chris keep up the great work and have a superb Friday.😀🙂👍💪🏋️
I love how nonchalantly they make the concept of cloning a thing in the transformers universe just so they can recolor and resell the same figures. Like the process of genetically cloning these metallic organic creatures of extraterrestrial origins is surprisingly simple apparently.
Friendly reminder that "Convoy" is basically the japanese version of the "Prime" rank for the most part. G1 Optimus Prime = Convoy, later G1 Convoy Rodimus Prime = Rodimus Convoy Optimus Primal = Beast Wars Convoy (no, seriously.) While Japan loves their lions the coloring and role I can’t help but think Lio Convoy is a semi homage to the very first Brave Exkaiser who was a leader of his own team and had a white Lion aesthetic on top of glowing golden when imbued with great power (and Exkaiser predates Super Saiyan before anyone says that)
When Optimus Primal leave the charge, Lio Convoy took the stand to fight against the Predacons, and when Lio Convoy dissapeared, the mighty Big Convoy took the fight agains Unicron and the Blendtrons
I remember being taken quite aback while watching "Beast Wars Neo" upon learning the Lio Convoy's powered up form was green.* It struck me as an odd choice of color until I was later reading about the Green Lion of alchemy and remembered that the term "Angolmois" comes from Nostradamos, so it's not unlikely that the esoterica loving writers of "Beast Wars II" likely chose green as an allusion to alchemy. *If anyone's wondering why I learned about Lio Convoy's green form in "Beast Wars Neo" as opposed to "Beast Wars II," I watched "Neo" first duemy love for Magmatron and the mostly dinosaur Predacon team.
I have the proper colored version of the Leobreaker retool, but given how the current Legacy toyline is all about doing bots from all over the TF multiverse, I'd love to see a new toy of him in that line. Preferably as a general release, I'd rather not shell out Haslab prices like I did for Victory Saber.
So, with the council of convoys basically be the Japanese version of the council of primes? I specifically remember one of the comics saying something about the council of primes. Or, maybe it was the RID 2015 cartoon or something.
Ay, I had the Lio Convey Leobreaker "Leo Prime" toy. The other toys I had where Cybertron Metroplex, that Animated Bulkhead toy with HeadMasterson, Animated Grimlock, Animated Sentinel (i think I don't know if I actually had him or I lost him when I moved), a Hot Rod recolor of Cybertron Hotshot, Bayverse Ironhide, and Cybertron Downshift I think his name was (Autobot, Muscle Car, Cyberkey, Wheeljack Head, Lockdown Colors). I also remember having the Protectabots at my Grandma's house.
Lio convoy, big convoy and optimus primal are continuing the tradition of each commander of either the autobots or the maximals picking up where the previous left off, this is why i always loved the japanese beast wars

Basically
Orion Pax->Convoy->Optimus Prime

When Optimus Primal leave the charge, Lio Convoy took the stand to fight against the Predacons, and when Lio Convoy dissapeared, the mighty Big Convoy took the fight agains Unicron and the Blendtrons
Eject? You mean one of blaster's cassettes has an entire gladiatorial show he runs?!?! IN THE NAME OF PRIMUS!!!
3:20 well thats an image that's gonna haunt my nightmares for a good calender month.
An underrated and fun show.
I love that japan calls primes convoy it just feels really cool to me
I still like to see the basics on the stunticons cause so far we’ve seen the basics on the protectobots, the aerialbots, and the combaticons
Lio Convoy is one of my favorite Convoys and leaders of all time, only true Transformers Fans know and love him
Just bought hin 2 days ago at a flee market!!!
Great video Chris keep them coming please
That closing pun was nicely done :)
You might even say 'It was Prime'
I'm cringing as I Post this :)
With Lio Convoy out, I'll wait you making basic of Big Convoy, my fave one ^^
I have the proper colored version of the Leobreaker retool, but given how the current Legacy toyline is all about doing bots from all over the TF multiverse, I'd love to see a new toy of him in that line.
Preferably as a general release, I'd rather not shell out Haslab prices like I did for Victory Saber.
I do find it surprising that there are American themed copies of this unique character in Transformers Japanese lore.
So, with the council of convoys basically be the Japanese version of the council of primes? I specifically remember one of the comics saying something about the council of primes. Or, maybe it was the RID 2015 cartoon or something.
I bought one of the Japanese Lio Convoy toy kept him in the box 📦 ans sold him a couple years back for a decent profit 📈.
3:40 some where Voltron's missing an Arm
8:50 And upgrading into his Legends body in the process.
Did that happen sometime in "Derailment"?
Oh no, that 'Pride of the line,' line might have been too much. But appreciate that you were brave enough to shoot that shot.
I'd like to see a Transformers series that eventually just makes dimension hopping a norm, and the Autobots eventually encounter Lio Convoy
Neil Kaplan would be awesome as Lio Convoy
