Honestly, all the Japanese G1 in Evolution (Lio, Twincast, Metalhawk, Black Lio, Crosscut) seems like it was designed to go alongside Deathsaurus before he got turned into a HasLab release.
As someone who never thought this would ever happen as a retail release, I’m overjoyed that Lio turned out the way he did. His sculpt is as accurate as Tarn’s. His gimmicks are delightfully silly (and useful, in the case of his weapons storage). His articulation, despite being limited, isn’t nearly as bad as Tarn’s Hot Rod shoulders or Hot Shot’s convoluted knees. His transformation is an utter joy. His lion mode… okay, it could’ve used better paint, but it does its job decently. For me, this is everything you wanted Tarn to be- a character I’ve loved for years that FINALLY got an official toy (in Lio’s case; one that released stateside and was show-accurate). He lived up to the hype.
All things considered, as someone who owns both the original toy and the legacy version, this is a really good update to the original toy, keeping almost all the gimmicks but fixing the stiffness and a weird torso build of the original
something just occurred to me Beast Wars the second almost every single character wears the alternate form like they are trophies after a successful hunt case and point Lio Prime wears his alternate form like he just skin a random lion there's also another character who transforms into a mammoth and he wears the tasks like a necklace
The lion head having pop out gubs is from the original toy and show, I wish it had more posability in robot mode, but at least they're trying to be accurate
Hey perspective I just want to say thank you. Thank you for always making fun and amazing videos. They have helped me a lot when I haven’t been the best so thank you and keep up the amazing work:)
@@PerspectiveEnd dang, that’s some bad luck. I mean, there are single mushroom pegs on figures that are tighter than double mushroom pegs on other figures, but there are also double mushroom pegs that are tighter on one figure than another figure that has single mushroom pegs. It’s just kinda hard to figure out if the single mushroom pegs would be tighter than a double mushroom pegs on the same figure.
I don´t think Japan doesn´t understand what the Matrix of Leadership is, but rather that the Energon Matrices are just a different kind of machine, they don´t function the same because they don´t have to, a Matrix is literally just a word that can be applied to many things and a power storage unit can be one of them since it can generate power that imbues the user with power and allows them to use it in many ways that wouldn´t be possible without the power of the energon Matrix. Since the users are mostly leaders that occupy positions of high power amongst armies, it makes sense to me that such an artifact would exist. It doesn´t undermine nor does it reflect a misunderstanding of the Matrix in my opinion.
That's rather typical honestly. Like "What's this thing that just imparts wisdom and causes evil to decay around it, that's not cool enough. It needs to shoot lasers!"
1:55 we actually DID get a Bat Optimus prime update a few years ago. It uses the Mindwipe mold and comes with an extra crocodile Megatron headmaster for some reason. It was an Ehobby exclusive though, so good luck finding that.
About his matrix: he has no matrix, he has false energon matrix, which is just essentially a badge with extra energon, for power, so the council of primes has some way to signify who is one of them, also I never remember him using it as laser, and I saw the show... Also keeping gimmick is fun, seeing his OG toy also had all the flip up stuff, so I do belive it is at least form of kibble management by giving it some use...
What makes it false, and yes I know it's not a Matrix of Leadership, but it's clearly what they thought the Matrix was without having seen the 86 Movie because it wasn't Localized to japan till years later. What is this about Grimlock?
Lio Convoy's lion mode, I think, is based on the Japanese anime movie Kimba, which several people believe was the basis of Simba from the Lion King. Also they didn't know what the Matrix of Leadership was and had some dumb explanation for what the matrix is.
i love this figure and all the kibble are screen accurate to the Show i won't complain this figure is awesome! Also Lio Convoy is the original name for the character I'm sticking to the original material
I get that, but the reason he goes by Convoy is just that they stuck with that for Prime, even though by that logic then Skyfire should have been called Valkyrie. Like this is the Transformers, not the toylines that Predated it, so they should be going by the Transformers names.
My gf got me this figure, and I love him. He’s so fun to me and I love the Lion leg blade things. I’m honestly shocked you liked him, my first thought when I got Leo prime out of the box was “I enjoy this but I know perspective wouldn’t.” But I’m happily surprised
as far as i know the double mushroom peg joints are for added friction so it doesnt loosen over time and so far it seems to be working. love this figure even though i know nothing about lio convoy
A few people have mentioned that, but like that's not POSSIBLE because these Double Pegs are all about the loosest things I've ever run into. They are so much looser than normal Mushroom pegs.
There's a tab on the trashcan lid you can cut, which barely noticeably fills a small gap in the front of the lion. If you cut it, then the lion arms are easier to curl up next to his robot arms, and then they don't bother my much for the same reason why the sides of the truck on Classics Prime on his arms was tolerable. Not ideal, but it's much cleaner and it still respects the original vision, as lazy as it might have been. It respects the reasons why the people who like Lio Prime like him, which couldn't be avoided when making him. Just the nature of the thing, like how Blur always gets a partsforming shield, which you think would mean his toys are always bad, but he's had some really good ones in spite of that. If you don't want to cut the tabs it's still possible to curl up the lion arms tightly, but it's a bit more awkward.
I feel Lio Convoy is my favorite from Evolution so far. Mainly due to the fact that Convoy doesn’t seem to have QC issues. I was hyped for this figure in part solely because I have the original Beast Wars Second Cybertron Leader Lio Convoy figure which sits in his box as that figure is as old as me, was $94, and I’ll probably never find it again. Regardless I like Evolution Lio and no I won’t stop calling him Lio Convoy.
Getting this figure in hand a couple months ago brought back memories of being a kid and discovering for the very first time that there was a sequel to Beast Wars through a 240p RUclips upload of the first opening to Beast Wars II that just happened to pop up in my recommended. My tiny mind was blown, and my tiny heart wars subsequently broken when I found out I could only watch the first five episodes in English. It was only last year that I finally got around to watching the series subtitled, and although some parts were really hard to get through, a few of the arcs had me really invested, especially towards the latter half of the series. I had loved Lio Convoy’s design ever since I first discovered that opening video, and although I had considered getting the MP for a while, the price led me to delay biting the bullet as long as possible. When I found out about this figure, I decided to skip the MP entirely, and I don’t regret that decision one bit. This is honestly my favorite TF purchase of the year so far, and I’m glad to see you enjoyed it more than I thought you would. The start of the video genuinely shocked me, but then when I remembered your complaints with Tarn, it started to make a bit more sense.
The double mushroom was invented for 2 reasons A: it helps the joint not break down over time hopefully keeping it tight for longer B: it gives the peg itself more structural support stopping it from shearing off as easily
A I've only ever found them to come incredibly loose comparatively with the regular ones. B I don't understand how that works, wouldn't it just have the same point of failure as ever?
@@PerspectiveEnd not sure, but I can say I’ve never had a loose one so far and I’ve had single mushrooms break, but I haven’t had a double mushroom, break, and I’m only talking about figures since the wfc
The kibble management in lio convoy is pretty good but if there's anything I don't like for some reason it's the lion head. I'm not sure why but it feels weird the shape of it. On a side note, I want a legacy tankor
When you say Legacy Tankor, do you mean like a Version of the Beast Machines character? And it might be the size of the lion head that's putting you off.
like I've been saying, Optimus makes so much sense as a Lion than a Monke. yes, I know Primal and Optimus aren't the same char tho they effectively kinda... are.
They are not even remotely "Effectively" kina the same character. They are completely different individuals. Like even personality wise they aren't all that similar.
It feels so odd that this is the better voyager between it and Tarn, even if it's a slim margin. It's also both good for me but also depressing that this version of Lio Prime has a more cohesive lion mode than the actual panel nightmare that is the MP. I feel there's an amazing figure somewhere that goes right in between this and the MP, and it would absolutely be the best variant. Admittedly though I still would rather see them try to make a slight redesign of him to make him a bit more in-line with the Beast Wars Aesthetic
I mean Tarn Theoretically Poses better, and has less kibble, a better Altmdoe, and a Transformation that doesn't require tools, but does partsform so there's that. It's just too bad about the sculpt cause this could have looked so much better than the awful MP. It's funny cause he does kind of look like a janky CGI Modle in this beast mode.
I'm not embarrassed to say that I pick this guy up off my shelf WAY more than Tarn. He just exudes tons more presence. Plus, the shoulder kibble has a surprising amount of range to get out of the way for arm poseabilty AND is on mushroom pegs, so you can just take them off. The arm kibble comes off pretty easily too, which is neat. What I don't get is that you're saying you need fingernails to open the chest? I find it easy to turn the head 90° and then pushing the blue pec side from the top out and down at the same time, and it comes out no problem.
Man I tried everything to get that chest open without the use of finger nails, and I just cant. Nothing works. Interesting that you can pop that stuff off. I didn't think to try that.
@@PerspectiveEnd One side overlaps the other, so you need to open the side without the matrix chamber first. Knowing that, I just need to get a good friction grip on the collarbone area, with my finger tip, & pull. Was using my barely there nails, until I realized it was a do one side first situation. And, yeah, the upside to balljoints & mushroom pegs is ease of removal.
Is it a completely different thing, or just an Extreme Misunderstanding of the concept. The G1 movie wasn't really available in Japan at the time other than in essentially as a Synopsis. And what did it do in the movie, it Killed Unicron. Very easy to misinterpret that as a weapon.
Funny thing: this is Hasbro's third attempt at Lio Convoy/Leo Prime. Back during Transformers Cybertron, there was a Target exclusive Voyager class Leo Prime repaint and new head retool of Leobreaker... and a very hard to find sparkly version (in homage to Flash Lio Convoy)... attempt two was the Legends class version.
I personally thought that this figure was a win but wished he had the painted eyes like his repaint of Nemesis Leo Prime. I still enjoy this over that version though.
I see lio as a dude that was insanely insecure about not having an alt mode so chose an animal he thought was awesome but actually gets bullied by most animals around it 90% of the time
5:40 The thing about the lion head sculpt is that they went with an asiatic lion instead of an african lion so that's another reason why it looks off #umactually
I've accidentally started a "Nemasis Prime" collection, so I'll be getting the Nemasis version of this when it comes out. The goal to begin with was a wanted a bunch of different Optimus Prime moulds, but I found quick that if I got a Prime I felt an immediate obligation to get the corresponding Megatron. But i figured if I get the Nemasis versions then I don't have the obligation to get a partner figure.
Good video, really want this figure. One thing having seen the show, that’s not The Matrix in his chest, it’s an Energon Matrix, which is essentially given to anyone with the prime rank as a kinda tribute to the matrix
Agreed about tarns shoulders it's his Achilles heal (idk how to spell it) of his fig For lio agreed I'm probably won't get it enless it's on sale for a good price to mutch kibble and it doesn't look fun to handle either
Well the Hilarious thing is that you got Achilles correct, but it's Heel. As in the back of the foot of Achilles. Yeah this isn't a "Charge Out And Buy" kind of figure.
Well, that was an interesting review. 3:02 Ohhh how nice of you to think like this about me 😊 3:07 bha ha ha ha ha HA HA 😂 😆 ohhhh sweet summer child, I will show you INSANE 😈 And besides that, I'm not gonna lie, this is an interesting figure. The robot mode is nice. The articulation is good enought, and the Lion mode is uniqe (at least imo). And as for the question of the video ... From all Japanise Beast wars characters, whitch one would you pick to get an modern up grade (for me that would been Long Rack. Cause I suprizingly like this wierdo more them I thought). Also, I once asked you about your favorite animals. Those were a Lion/Panther, and a Dragon, right? 😅
I care deeply for you my friend. You're insane. The articulation is passable but like with a C- or a D+ Well I mean Apparently it was this guy cause I did get him. Probably Either Big Convoy, or anyone who was a character based on a Toy Only character from American Beast Wars. No... No you didn't and that's not what I would have Answered. I love me a Normal House Cat. Rats. And Alligators are Really cool. Favorite animal is not something I've ever put much thought into before. But I wouldn't have Said lion or Panther, and I certainly would not have said a Mythological Animal.
Looking back on this, I think Lio Convoy is still a good figure but I also find it hilarious that the lion’s articulation is severely outclassed by TR Sixshot
I call him Lio Primal, always have. Seems most fitting. I was off put ever since the old Legends figure was Prime and not Primal. I was just happy to have an affordable version of Lio Primal that wasn't a sad Leo Breaker repaint. The Beast Mode warmed up to me over time.
See the problem with that is that it Implies that Optimus Primal should have been called Munkey Primal. And yeah I totally get that. I see the purpose this figure serves.
I did some messing around, and by popping the legs off at a specific pin and flipping it backwards, then spinning on thigh swivel, it gives the figure maximum knees, and to make it "work" in lion mode, needed the double pegged foot swivels. I suspect it's vestigial tooling, as the final product's lion-mode legs jut out funny in that orientation and would have been fine with a slightly different shin design.
@PerspectiveEnd it doesn't really work anyway and I swapped back. I was talking about how it seems like it was originally designed to be able to do max knees but lost them to revisions.
I'm shocked you like this figure even though you hate Japanese Transformers. I'm looking forward to the Nemesis Leo/Copy Convoy redeco of it even though I already own the normal version.
I prefer Optimus' eyes as yellow because: a) that's the original way b) I love his Unicdon trilogy designs c) they stand out better against his blue helmet
I mean the ORIGINAL toy was that way, but what does that matter? See that's more valid because they were yellow there. Well his face is supposed to be Silver. So they stand out there.
I love the concept of beast wars and beast wars’s Japanese seasons because of the fact that I really like the concept of animal transformers. Like the concept of three dinosaurs, combining and becoming a giant robot, that is also the leader of the Predacons!? DUMBLY AMAZING!!
As someone who likes both Tarn and Lio Prime, despite my problems with both of them, I honestly think that the voyagers are where Legacy has shined for the most part. I mean Bulkhead, Jhiaxus, Inferno, Override, and Blaster(and Billy by proxy) were all solid figures. I liked Starscream despite the QC issues, and the Soundwave reissue is pretty cool too. And we’re getting Metalhawk and Dirge, which both seem like pretty cool retools. Plus, 86 Ironhide was pretty great, though he doesn’t count as Legacy.
You had me at "fun transformation." I am sold, now I shall wait a year for it to go on sale and swoop in and buy it. It's just not in this years budget saddly. Thanks for pointing out those terrible elbow joints in Scraphook that really helped me out. I was able to point them out in my own videos because of you so thanks for lookin out mate. :) Those elbows really suck at staying together. I jokeingly tell you in my videos that I count the hands as siege ports but that is only me joking around. If you dont like me doing that let me know and I will stop. Not wanting to hurt feelings :) Be well mate!
I mean it's a fun Transformation, but you don't NEED this. The figure is good but not Amazing. And it's no problem I'm just trying to get everyone as informed as possible. And don't worry about me man, I don't want you to quit it with that, it's no skin off my back.
@@PerspectiveEnd glad to hear. :) I shall continue to label hands as siege ports and tell my audience about you. lol For a person I have never actually talked to you are a cool person and I do consider you at the very least a RUclips Friend. I would love to just talk transformers with you one day.. :)
Note to self, PE hates hot rod shoulders worse than lion arm elbows and Japan. I definitely think it's a flaw, but way more minor than you do. I also don't really pose figures, so keep that in mind for my opinion. I think you've made me want Lio Prime though, after seeing him in store and passing on him several times. Update: I now have him, he's great. I haven't even really messed with him yet but just holding him, I love him. (That's what she said.)
I mean not normally, but those are REALLY EGREGIOUS examples. Normally they don't mount them that high and they are fine when the arms are mounted in 2 places it just gives the arms more range that way. It's always a problem when it's the only kind of shoulder joint though. I'm glad that you are enjoying it so much, and I'm glad that I convinced you to get it if you are liking it so much.
Man, I am so tempted to buy this figure. Especially with how these randomly popped up at a mall that I normally go to. And it is priced fairly low. What's holding me back from buying this- and any other autobot -is my silly principle of only collecting decepticons or the "bad guys" in general. I should probably just wait for the Nemesis Leo prime redeco lol.
I own it, I like it. I preorderd the nemesis version. I agree with you on your assessment of this figure but he was always one of my favorite prime designs. I'm also getting all the kingdom and legacy beast figures. Recently got T-Wrecks and he's awesome!!!
I mean that Megatron mold is just a Winner. I'm not down for the Nemesis version of this though. That thing just looks like it was dipped in chocolate.
On the topic of the double mushroom peg foot extension trick, I’d love to see someone make a 3D Print part specifically to cover that up with the intention of making the legs slightly longer while still looking good. It’s not like it’d need a lot of material either. Otherwise, I’m glad this figure exists for the people who wanted it, but this is absolutely not my thing. And I’m the guy who is perfectly OK with anime inspired designs. JP Beast Wars is…well, there’s a reason I ignore it and JP Prime. It cannot hurt me if I refuse to acknowledge its existence.
I would not say that this is better than Tarn. Tarn is a Better figure, on an Objective Point By Point basis he is better. I just LIKE this more than that.
I bought the Tarn based on your Review, The Shoulders suck, but I really like the rest of the figure. Thanks for all you do, I look forward to your videos every week.
This is surprisingly nice and the lion mode isn’t bad but that head it’s just off like why leave the eyes gold. It’s also a prime that doesn’t come with the 1000th version of the same matrix , for me I’ll probably do the nemesis version
I saw him at Target, he looks cool but Target also had the Bowser toy from the Mario movie where it has a fire breathing gimmick and it looked so cool in that awesome kids toy way that the greatest kids toys are
First thing I did when I got mine was give it mascara and pupils with a panelline marker. It's... better. More like an Ugly cute dog than a bad ass lion, but still better. Almost my perfect Lio Prime figure, maybe some upgrade set might fix that. ( Plus now I don't have to drop a fat stack on the MP or PE Leonidas) Keep up the great work as always.
"Ugly Cute Dog"... Wut? Glad you were able to make it more to your liking though. Since when was I the God of Sparta? But in all seriousness, the Perfect Effect figure looks SICK as HELLLLLL so I still want that, but the MP is butt ugly. Thank you.
I mean it can work if there are other joints in the shoulder that can do the same thing, so it gives you more range, but when it's the only joint then it's a Problem.
Shocked that you liked this more than Tarn. Also, I obtained Kingdom Rattrap for £6.99 at a B&M the same day I got SS ROTB Scourge and Buzzworthy Bumblebee Dinobot from In Demand Toys for £19.99, the latter of which I won't have until tomorrow. I think Rattrap is alright, though the parts of the head are not glued together, for some reason.
@@PerspectiveEnd the head is made out of 2 parts: the front, which contains most of the face's detail and the back, which contains the eyes. As I said, they have broke, though it doesn't impact anything as due to its design it can go back on no problem.
I’m just happy that we got Lio Convoy (Or Leo Prime or whatever) and about the Energon matrix I like to think that because it’s the future a strain of “Fuck strong shit up” energon is made from something crazy and that the Convoy Council (which I think that’s what they were called) were able to make some matrix’s out of it and give em to some dudes who were actually good at their job
See I can't see it as anything other than what it is, in that it's just a Miscommunication since Japan didn't get the G1 Movie, so all they had to go off of was a Synopsis that just made it sound like it was a weapon.
@@PerspectiveEnd I think cuz I was easier to leave the kibble on the arms because it's "cannon" I love this figure but I thought I was being gasslit about the kibble being in the show, so I kept looking through scenes. I noticed the kibble is largely absent un till he is about, or after using his blade kibble weapons.
Nemesis is the obvious better choice. Better eyes, colors that fix the mold a bit more, and another gun that can make the mane mount in robot-mode actually useful in bot mode. I wonder if they would heavy retool this to make polarclaw from kingdom, or if this was the retool and polarclaw is being shelved for mayhem. If it was, He would have a HEAVY backpack even with tooling.
Well, let's hope that A) Nemesis Leo prime improved it (probably not) B) Tasmanian Kid is good (and gets retooled into Maximal snarl) and C) Nyx and Bat Primal get toys (easily could make the Nyx toy first then recolor and retool into Bat Primal, though if that happens, bat primal, as well as Snarl, would probably be buzzworthy exclusive since that is the line release toy colored beast wars characters)
A) I don't see them really addressing the problems this has. B) I don't see them doing a Tasmainian kid? C) Yeah that's really why I mentioned them in the same breath, they would be easy retools of each other.
@@PerspectiveEnd and so Japan insisting on calling him what he’s always been called in their country is stupid and they should just quit? Why? Why do you have no respect for the Japanese transformers to insult Japan as a nation more than the actual content. Lio convoy was his name, it was translated to English. My name is different in Spanish, however I would like to be called the same name regardless of where I am. Lio convoy is a Japanese created character that is relevant and popular mascot of the beast wars in Japan and has no relevance in American stories and has only recently getting toys. This isn’t a “Optimus convoy” situation, he was culturally relevant and prevalent in Japan, why does America get to declare the English translation of the name of a character they had no involvement with creating is the actual name? Why do we get to steal the character, call him something more familiar and comfortable with us, and then BASH Japan for calling the character his original name. Honestly you take the asshole bit way to far like you’re being low key mean as fuck for no reason.
To give my thoughts as a Beast Wars II fan, the figure looks good for the most part, I'm not fond of the arm kibble but I appreciate that the show wanted to really show off what every toy could do and made sure Lio Convoy felt powerful by actually showing off all of his abilities in both modes. As for the matrix, it doesn't actually shoot lasers it just provides BS asspull power-ups from nowhere. Which I think is perhaps a little more exciting in the moment than the way the Matrix of Leadership tends to just resolve the plot once it's opened. But you are entitled your own opinion and if you think Japanese Transformers is lame, who am I to stop you.
Man I swear I've seen a shot of him blasting a big laser out of his chest? Sadly them trying to be honest to the toy means that we are now forever more stuck with this kibble.
@@PerspectiveEnd Correction,. it does fire a laser once, at the finale of the Beast Wars II movie as the climax of the fight with the power-up recolors of Optimus Primal and Leo Prime against the unremarkable kaiju thing they brought in to avoid killing the show's actual villains. But to my knowledge no other character with an Energon Matrix has ever used it to fire a giant laser.
So, I should mention the reason for the mini guns is so that you can flip them out in lion mode, similar to the mp. Is it great? Ehh. But it looks better there at least I've heard black leo prime comes with an extra gun. No idea how true that is
@PerspectiveEnd no, you showed that it can be store in lion mode, but you didn't show that it can be flipped out to be used as weapons in beast mode, similar to the mp. At least, you didn't show it. Maybe you mentioned it and I didn't hear it. I thought it was used better in beast mode than bot mode, but that doesn't really mean much
I think he looks p cool, like he has a very dynamic stance that tarn wishes he has, I also customized the lion head and i think its an improvement, it just needed eyeliner and black lipstick
This was my favourite figure of Evo until I got Skyquake. I love BWII, watched it during the first lockdown so it means a lot to me. And having a figure of Lio Convoy being this good blew my mind. I never thought we'd see him, let alone him being before Depth Charge, but I'm glad we have as he is amazing
It's just crazy seeing Lio Convoy in the US as a popular toy after being a pretty obscure JP only character for so many years
Yeah it's really crazy but cool in same time.
Honestly, all the Japanese G1 in Evolution (Lio, Twincast, Metalhawk, Black Lio, Crosscut) seems like it was designed to go alongside Deathsaurus before he got turned into a HasLab release.
I guess people just like a lion optimus
A cool design is a cool design
That's fair, but to the Toy Designers and people like us he's super well known, even if Johnny off the Street has no idea who he is.
As someone who never thought this would ever happen as a retail release, I’m overjoyed that Lio turned out the way he did. His sculpt is as accurate as Tarn’s. His gimmicks are delightfully silly (and useful, in the case of his weapons storage). You know you can get an off brand MP for pretty cheap?
The MP has a worse lion mode. At least this one has a cohesive mane in beast mode.
I'm glad that you love it so much. I can see why it would appeal to you so much, though I do think it REALLY needed better poseing.
A bat, an ape, a lion, a mammoth, a dinosaur. Optimus has a lot of fursonas, man.
I mean most of those are supposed to be different characters.
And sometimes from different continuities, etc.
I love Leo Primes design and the concept behind him. To quote Jobby: “Put Optimus Prime in a fursuit, what’s not to love?”
I didn't realize I was making similar jokes to Jobby.
Someone's a fan of JTH
Also I have the masterpiece version of Lio Prime and I think that is better despite the Kibbletopia going on
All things considered, as someone who owns both the original toy and the legacy version, this is a really good update to the original toy, keeping almost all the gimmicks but fixing the stiffness and a weird torso build of the original
Yes but to be fair it also made the Gimmicks it kept worse.
Double mushroom pegs are tighter and less prone to getting loose over time than regular mushroom pegs.
The weird thing is that's the exact opposite of my experience.

Double Mushroom pegs give a joint more friction, preventing it from being too loose.

I mean like one that you can buy without it being a pain in the ass.
Kenner decided to make Optimus a bat because Batman was popular at the time apparently. Not a great reason but a reason
I mean yeah, that was during Batman TAS so it makes sense.
I'm pretty sure they have atleast changed convoy's name to Optimus Prime in Japan, except for colector media.
Yeah, he's been known as Optimus Prime in Japan ever since the first (and only good) Michael Bay movie came out.
I've never heard this. As far as I have ever known he's still Convoy over there.
And that's ok, convoy is a cool name in my opinion there.
The biggest plot twist in perceptive
end history
A plot twist I wasn't Expecting either.
@@PerspectiveEnd but BW2 released after their release of movie
Did you know that there is already a bat prime Japan exclusive? It’s a repaint of Titans Return Mindwipe and is called Convobat.
Yes I know about that thing, but it's impossible to get so that's why I'm asking for a new figure of it.
Lio Convoy's lion mode, I think, is based on the Japanese anime movie Kimba, which several people believe was the basis of Simba from the Lion King. Also they didn't know what the Matrix of Leadership was and had some dumb explanation for what the matrix is.
I mean I did Mention Kimba the White Lion in this video.
Indeed that is why they had the Energon Matrixes.
i love this figure and all the kibble are screen accurate to the Show
i won't complain this figure is awesome!
I'm going to guess before I watch the video:
The kibble?
The soulless dead eyes?
I mean I do mention those, but I came away liking it none the less.
At least the nemesis variant showed that the beast head can be saved with the addition of pupils
It can at least be helped.
My gf got me this figure, and I love him. He’s so fun to me and I love the Lion leg blade things. I’m honestly shocked you liked him, my first thought when I got Leo prime out of the box was “I enjoy this but I know perspective wouldn’t.” But I’m happily surprised
Nice! You got a good GF. Happy to Surprise you here.
as far as i know the double mushroom peg joints are for added friction so it doesnt loosen over time and so far it seems to be working. love this figure even though i know nothing about lio convoy
I don't know that how close the lion legs are to the robot arms is really my main concern. Just kind of the mass of it hanging off the arms at all.
Finally, a Prime that doesn’t come with another matrix. Let’s hope Hasbro realise that 27 is just the right number
Technically it does, but it doesn't come as a Separate Accessory.
Yeah I didn't mention the QC but I probably should have, this thing feels great on that front.
Man, I remember the days of bad anime rips on youtube.
I'm glad that this figure was able to uncover such fond memories for you.
The double mushroom was invented for 2 reasons
A: it helps the joint not break down over time hopefully keeping it tight for longer
B: it gives the peg itself more structural support stopping it from shearing off as easily
@@PerspectiveEnd well, idw and beast machines tankor have the same design with some minor tweaks but yes. Also yes the lion head does feel off for me
like I've been saying, Optimus makes so much sense as a Lion than a Monke. yes, I know Primal and Optimus aren't the same char tho they effectively kinda...
I like the idea and design of the character. Though because he’s a lion almost every figure even the masterpiece has legs on the back of the arms.
I don't think it's almost every figure, I think it's just every figure.
He has an energon matrix, completely separate from the matrix of leadership.
I did not know that.
I personally thought that this figure was a win but wished he had the painted eyes like his repaint of Nemesis Leo Prime. I still enjoy this over that version though.
Yeah the eyes really didn't need to be so dead for no reason.
I see lio as a dude that was insanely insecure about not having an alt mode so chose an animal he thought was awesome but actually gets bullied by most animals around it 90% of the time
I did not know this about lions.
This is my favourite figure in my collection. This makes me happy as a collector and a fan.
I'm glad you enjoy it so much. I like it too.
5:40 The thing about the lion head sculpt is that they went with an asiatic lion instead of an african lion so that's another reason why it looks off #umactually
I mean if that's true then WHY THOUGH?
Tip for popping open the bot chest! All you have to do is to pull the arms backwards at the shoulders slightly to pop the chest open! (^.^)
Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try.
But the Nemesis version of this looks so bad.
That's a weirdly logical reason to do a Nemesis Collection.
Nemasis leo is kinda the first one.
Good video, really want this figure. One thing having seen the show, that’s not The Matrix in his chest, it’s an Energon Matrix, which is essentially given to anyone with the prime rank as a kinda tribute to the matrix
I’m gonna have to get this for my my collection, and it’s good to hear it’s not as bad as I thought it was
I mean I don't know that you need to change what you feel about this. It's not amazing. It's just good.
@@PerspectiveEnd right but it’s not horrible like I thought
Agreed about tarns shoulders it's his Achilles heal (idk how to spell it) of his fig
For lio agreed I'm probably won't get it enless it's on sale for a good price to mutch kibble and it doesn't look fun to handle either
Well the Hilarious thing is that you got Achilles correct, but it's Heel. As in the back of the foot of Achilles.
Yeah this isn't a "Charge Out And Buy" kind of figure.
@PerspectiveEnd oh man I knew I had Somthing rong lol
Well, that was an interesting review.
3:02 Ohhh how nice of you to think like this about me 😊
3:07 bha ha ha ha ha HA HA 😂 😆 ohhhh sweet summer child, I will show you INSANE 😈
And besides that, I'm not gonna lie, this is an interesting figure.
The articulation is passable but like with a C- or a D+
Well I mean Apparently it was this guy cause I did get him.
Oh man that's a Damning Statement.
His lion mode is great but damn it looks horrifying.
It looks Haunted.
I think it's because of the unpainted eyes, They look dead and featureless. Just having a different eye color could help it look more alive.
I feel like I’d Optimus Prime was going to have a beast mode this would be it
Yeah, a Lion makes sense for the old Leader.
That sounds like a good idea, but it's a lot more work than anyone can really be expected to do to get decent posing out of this thing.
I am too. But a Good Toy is a Good Toy.
I prefer Optimus' eyes as yellow because:
a) that's the original way
b) I love his Unicdon trilogy designs
c) they stand out better against his blue helmet
I mean the ORIGINAL toy was that way, but what does that matter?
See that's more valid because they were yellow there.
Well his face is supposed to be Silver. So they stand out there.
Unexpected BloodRayne reference was appreciated lmao
A game serries that has become lost to the annals of history.
Yeah.....should have called him "Optimus Kibbles 'n' Bits"
Isn't Kibbles n Bits Dogfood not Cat food?
@@PerspectiveEnd Touché :D
I love the concept of beast wars and beast wars’s Japanese seasons because of the fact that I really like the concept of animal transformers. Like the concept of three dinosaurs, combining and becoming a giant robot, that is also the leader of the Predacons!? DUMBLY AMAZING!!
And no, I’m not talking about Megatron from beast wars 2, I’m talking about the main villain from beast wars Neo
I do know who Magmatron is. One of the only Triocons.
Oh yeah, as a Whole the Leader and Voyager Size class for Legacy have been ABSOLUTE KILLERS. Some of the best figures Hasbro's put out ever.
I actually really enjoyed this figure a lot, and funny enough I am uploading my sub-voted Leo Prime Short today as well
I get why. I enjoy it my self, even if I can see it's not the best.
Why would you only buy the Badguys? Who do they fight each other at that point?
Oh a 3D Printed part would be super easy for that.
I didn't know they messed with Prime too?
The fact that this is better then Tarn is bending realities
nah tarn is lame
@@bigconvoy9850 Exactly, the fact that LEO PRIME is better than the figure that was hyped up to be the best Voyager ever is mind boggling
You bought Tarn based on My Review? Where I crapped all over the figure?
@@PerspectiveEnd yes I like the honesty you gave in the review. And I am a sucker for a Purple bot.
This is surprisingly nice and the lion mode isn’t bad but that head it’s just off like why leave the eyes gold. It’s also a prime that doesn’t come with the 1000th version of the same matrix , for me I’ll probably do the nemesis version
I mean technically it comes with a Matrix, it's just not a Separate Accessory, but it is nice to not get one for once in practical terms yes.
I saw him at Target, he looks cool but Target also had the Bowser toy from the Mario movie where it has a fire breathing gimmick and it looked so cool in that awesome kids toy way that the greatest kids toys are
It's fine to pass this up if a different kind of toy caught your eye.
First thing I did when I got mine was give it mascara and pupils with a panelline marker. It's... better. More like an Ugly cute dog than a bad ass lion, but still better.
Almost my perfect Lio Prime figure, maybe some upgrade set might fix that. ( Plus now I don't have to drop a fat stack on the MP or PE Leonidas)
Keep up the great work as always.
"Ugly Cute Dog"... Wut?
Glad you were able to make it more to your liking though.
Since when was I the God of Sparta?
But in all seriousness, the Perfect Effect figure looks SICK as HELLLLLL so I still want that, but the MP is butt ugly.
Thank you.
Perspective liking a japanese transformer, what has the world come to
Chaos.
I wonder how well the little yellow guns look with legends class figures
They won't fit in their hands. One set has pegs designed to be held by nothing, and the other has pegs that are too big.
Articulation is truly the most painful flaw. But I still like him.
Yeah it's really not good at the whole posing thing, but I too still like it.
I like the Tarn figure.
But I 100% agree with the hot rod shoulders.
It's a joint that ruins any figure they use it on.
I think Rattrap is alright, though the parts of the head are not glued together, for some reason.
i am shocked people like legacy tarn more
@@bigconvoy9850 I presume it's because Tarn is one of the most popular IDW characters whilst Lio Prime was an obscure Japanese character.
@@yonderjam idw is gay as fuck dude. Lio convoy is the dad a lot of people never had.
Really? What parts of his head weren't Glued.
And yes I'm shocked that I wound up liking this more.
"they insist on using the name convoy still got stupid reasons" might be because Optimus Prime is difficult for native Japanese speakers to say chief.
It's funny cuz even in the show, for most frames that leg arm kibble is no where to be found.
Why didn't they go with those frames then.
@@PerspectiveEnd I think cuz I was easier to leave the kibble on the arms because it's "cannon"
I love this figure but I thought I was being gasslit about the kibble being in the show, so I kept looking through scenes.
I noticed the kibble is largely absent un till he is about, or after using his blade kibble weapons.
I love despite having a very consistent vehcile mode he has a huge variety of beast modes
My God the eyes needed the animation eyes
I don't know why they went with the Dead Hollow ones.
@@PerspectiveEnd Hasbro making the weirdest decisions ever
Nemesis is the obvious better choice. Better eyes, colors that fix the mold a bit more, and another gun that can make the mane mount in robot-mode actually useful in bot mode. I wonder if they would heavy retool this to make polarclaw from kingdom, or if this was the retool and polarclaw is being shelved for mayhem. If it was, He would have a HEAVY backpack even with tooling.
When you really love something you see it's flaws and how they could do it better
That's my 5 cents on the tarn thing without having a wall of text
To be fair yes, though I don't know if that's at play here. I think it's just the shoulders are really really bad.
I honestly find the flatness of Tarn to be the one thing they could have avoided.
It's so strangely Pancaked out.
NEW HEADSCULPT!!!! JUNGLE EMPORER LEO!!!!
WE NEEEEEED!!!!!❤
Someone might do an Upgrade kit.
Sort of surprised no third party have made one called Aslan, tbh.
Probably cause they'd get sued harder for that, than for stealing Hasbro's IP.
If he appears in a movie i want him to be voiced by James Earl Jones.
Isn't this guy supposed to be like the unprepared leader Optimus?
@@PerspectiveEndI think so, but i just thought of James when I first saw him.
Yeesh, this aged terribly unfortunately..
Well, let's hope that
A) Nemesis Leo prime improved it (probably not)
B) Tasmanian Kid is good (and gets retooled into Maximal snarl)
and C) Nyx and Bat Primal get toys (easily could make the Nyx toy first then recolor and retool into Bat Primal, though if that happens, bat primal, as well as Snarl, would probably be buzzworthy exclusive since that is the line release toy colored beast wars characters)
A) I don't see them really addressing the problems this has.
B) I don't see them doing a Tasmainian kid?
C) Yeah that's really why I mentioned them in the same breath, they would be easy retools of each other.

I hope you find that it looks good like that.
On the topic of beast wars. Really hope chug tackles the toy only designs. I’d love a voyager Cybershark to face off against Inferno

@@PerspectiveEnd hopefully in year 3 of legacy they make the canceled Polarclaw. And hopefully he isn’t a rhinox retool
Do you think he’s better than Kingdom Optimus Primal? I sure do.
Hard to say. That has more pronounced Visual Flaws, and the Transformation is worse, but the Poseablity is way better.
0:11 ayo, all due respect, fuck that. LIo convoy IS what he has always been called, forget this western bullshit, japanese transformers are cool too.
But that's the Correct Translation. Convoy is just how Japan Localizes the term Prime. So when a convoy is localized here we know that means Prime.

Ehh. But it looks better there at least
I've heard black leo prime comes with an extra gun. No idea how true that is
I mean did I not mention that in the video it self?
It is true yes, he's got like a little Mini Gun Pistol. It doesn't look great.
Lipstick you say?
I mean I agree they eyes needed something but lipstick?
This was my favourite figure of Evo until I got Skyquake. I love BWII, watched it during the first lockdown so it means a lot to me. And having a figure of Lio Convoy being this good blew my mind. I never thought we'd see him, let alone him being before Depth Charge, but I'm glad we have as he is amazing
I'm glad to hear that it lived up to your needs.
