Tyrrell 012 F1 Car in action: Cosworth DFY V8 Engine Sound!

- The Tyrrell 012 was introduced at the end of the 1983 F1 season. It was then used in 1984 and in the first races of 1985 after been replaced by its successor, the Tyrrell 014.
The car was very light, thanks to the carbon fibre chassis and tight shape, but it was never able to worry the rivals' turbocharged cars. In order to gain some competitiveness, Cosworth provided the team a short-stroke version of the Ford Cosworth DFV, called DFY, that was able to produce around 520hp. In 1984 the car was driven by Martin Brundle and Stefan Bellof, whose driving impressed in their rookie seasons in F1, achieving solid placings and a podium place each, but after Brundle's second place in the Detroit Grand Prix the cars were disqualified by the FIA for various rule infringements and the team were excluded from the championship. The Tyrrell 012 is pretty known for its 'boomerang' rear wing that was used in only one occasion, during the first practice session of the 1983 Austrian Grand Prix, but then immediately dropped after discovering it had no advantages over a conventional wing.
Watch it in action during the Masters Historic F1 Championship in 2015 at Monza Circuit and in two editions of the Oldtimer GP at the Nürburgring, driven by Martin Stretton.

For me this is what F1 sounded like when I was young. Turning up at a GP weekend and hearing the DFV's being warmed up down the pit lane was such a big part of the whole event.
It still sounds like that now if (as per the video) you get to some Masters Series events. It's definitely worth it!

The old green benetton livery style looks so beautiful and distinctive. It looked great on the Alfas too. The amazing Tyrrell remembers me on the german driver Stefan Bellof. Watched every race where he took part as a boy on TV and finally got an autograph from Stefan in a car show in Munich 1984.

Its just a few modulations of the throttle, to manage the msnual gear box more than anything, not quite Senna. Senna's driving style was constant modulation and mid corner correction sometimes as many as 12-30 modulations/corrections. The driver above was just tapping the throttle to balance the car, keep turn in, manage the manual gear box. As a racing instructor this is common practice for manual gear boxes and controlling cars with lots of power, but no aero grip in slower-mid speed corners.
Why this driver is stabbing the throttle? We'd have to asking him, as the cars not turbo, its naturally aspirated... Sena used the throttle modulation technique to keep turbo boost up, at a time when turbo lag was horrific. This help him be able to get on the power (boost) sooner and smoother... He also had the habit from his childhood days karting, as it's also a technique for balancing a kart, due to the solid axle and square wheel bases... But interestingly Sena continued to modulate his throttle even after 89 when F1 was all naturally aspirated... So it was part habit, and part useful 80's technique for the early days of turbo.
Those Cosworth DF(x) engines have always been a work of art. Never a dull sound either.

It should be law that all engines sound this amazing. From an era when cars were more about about the driver and a lot less about computers doing the work and who had the most money to buy championships. Soooooooo much better than the hybrid garbage these days.

Stretton probably. Seen him driving Stewart's 006 which had a very short wheelbase and was consequently a tricky little bugger. He was bloody fast in that too.
He's Martin Stretton, a very quick historic racer. There's a clip here in RUclips if the first Monaco Historic GP in 1997, where Stretton, driving an old Maserati 4CM, drove in such a way that he beat the similarly skilled Willie Green, _who is driving an Alfa Romeo 158/159 "Alfetta"!_

@@jamesshunt5123 ive only seen the f1 cars with the v8s. They had the retired 2013 v8 f1 cars doing donuts and driving up and down las vegas blvd. I thought they sounded great, but red bulls cars had exhuast was the greatest sounds ive ever heard! But i think the "best" sounds were the 2004 v10s. They also had an older f1 (don't remember what year), sounded the worst of the group but still better than today's v6 turbo hybrids

Modern F1 cars are huge, or are the old ones small ?
I'll put it this way; modern F1 cars are significantly longer and wider than LMP1 prototypes, which are required to have room for a second seat in the cockpit. Indycars are significantly smaller as well, despite being the closest equivalent series outside of the feeder series, and they race on tracks where a longer wheelbase would actually be beneficial for high-speed stability.
If they want to reduce costs... bring back these engines!

The 012 was a really good car, a shame it got excluded from the Constructors Championship in 1984 by the FIA for those water-cooled brakes. Brundle showed it to be a good chassis when he finished 2nd at Detroit in his first season in F1, which he lost later.
