OnBoard an ex-Senna Lotus 97T F1 car at Imola Circuit: Warm Up, Demo Laps & Sound!

- First of all I must say an immense "thank you!" to the owner and driver of this 97T, Fredy Kumschick, and all his team for being so kind and available for everything basically during the day. A further thanks to my big friends Davide458Italia and Italiansupercarvideo who helped me as usual with the track-side recordings and to Reiza Studios guys who enabled me to get a better on-board audio.
Yesterday, 25th anniversary of Senna's death, I was at Imola Circuit for the Ayrton Day, organized by the same people behind Historic Minardi Day, where I had the big chance of doing a proper video of a 1985 Lotus 97T Renault. I saw this same Lotus 5 years ago during the 20th anniversary where Fredy used it for the first time after 28 years and it is chassis number 97T-4, used by Ayrton Senna himself during the season. The car is moved by a Renault-Gordini EF1 1.5-litre twin-turbo V6 engine which was able to produce approximately 800 hp (and probably even more in qualifying trim).
Basically it's almost 34 years since the last time chassis 4 hit a dry track so for just 4 demo laps, engine was set to run under 2 bars of boost (no more than 600hp) and an early rev limiter at 10,400 rpms but still enough to apppreciate the beautiful sound of a Turbo Era monster. Enjoy it in action again on track!

Grandissima cosa......l'ho guardato tutto con il magone....Ayrton Senna era il più grande pilota e un uomo unico in questo mondo!!!
Such an amazing sound. I'm sure Senna can hear it from heaven.
Senna would smile in heaven watching this 👍
Wait, is that the same John Players Special Lotus 97T that Ayrton drove back in 1985? WOOW! That driver must be incredibly proud to own and drive that beautiful car. When he waved and saluted through Tamburello I teared a bit. RIP Ayrton. Senna never forgotten!
Amazing footage as always Bozzy! Keep it up.
Forte applauso al pilota che, giunto al Tamburello, ha alzato la mano al cielo ed ha indicato il luogo in segno di memoria e rispetto per ben due volte. Grande gesto!
Foi mesmo. Muito bacana. 👍🏽

This video may well be *the* definitive audio-visual guide as to what this car actually looks like and sounds like. Genius! Absolute genius!
It's absolutely, fucking beautiful. And that's an understatement.
I was replying to this before I realized it was you, lol. Would you say this sound represents full turbo? I would think they’d dial it down for a track day like this, but maybe I’m wrong
@@SimRacing604 It sounds rev limited for sure.
SimRacing604 It certainly sounds like they’ve got a low rev limit set (just judging by ear, sounds to be about 10,000) and the boost gauge doesn’t appear to be indicating much. Either the boost gauge is broken, or - much more likely - they’ve got the wastegates popped all the way open. I’d imagine that replacing engine parts for this means a full-on remanufacture of long forgotten, totally out of production components, so I think we could hardly blame them for taking it easy!
Even with basically no boost, it’s still got to be chucking out 400-ish horsepower - plenty in a 500kg car!
@@F-Man its hard to keep that thing on track. In video game its almost imposible, real life must be harder.

its sound better than f1 turbo era today!
You mean the Car runs without using the Turbo Charger?
@@kallo182 It's still there, he's just not giving it enough throttle and revs to build positive pressure
@@Piper_PA Indeed, the boost pressure needle barely moves. Yeah, safety first, but i'd love to hear that engine at its full potential
If I owned that amazing car I would be setting the rev limiter low as well

Hi Bozzy. What a fantastic opportunity and you certainly did not squander it. Brilliant footage of such an iconic machine and I know you're as thankful to the owner as we are to you.🙏 I can't imagine the thrill of mounting your equipment to the actual car that has so much history connected to. Awesome video, Bozzy.👏👏 I hope you have a great weekend, my friend. Ciao!
It's sad when you realise than the 2 guys that drove this car, the guy that designed it, the one that run the team back then, and the guy that built that legendary team are all gone :(

4:05: What a beautiful racing car... the shape, the distinctive livery. I love this livery so much. Wanna design my black explorer guitar with the JSP logo. Thanks so much for sharing. Thanks to Fredy for moving and sharing this beauty with us.
Such a beautiful car, still under the control of the driver, no electronic aids, no to pit to car telemetry, no traction control, no anti-lock brakes just pure talent.
F1 should decide the manufactures championship with modern cars and the drivers championship in a separate race in formula fords.
You do know modern f1 cars don’t have tc and abs also
The car is obviously on low boost and not driven hard and he’s having to fight it imagine trying to drive this thing on the limit on qualifying trim full boost 5 bar would take some balls.
You had to be absolutely at the top of your game to drive one of these things flat out, no doubt about it. However he's probably struggling so much because the tyres are stone cold going round at that speed.
Absolutely true mate ,those guys back then where something else
Luckily for us, Senna had massive balls.

Essa Lotus ajudou a criar o maior ídolo que um povo brasileiro já teve, Senna eterno
These cars are so much more impressive than the present F1 car.
Says it all don't it about the modern era. There's so much to be impressed about with this era and car. Modern era can't even sound good.
Technology wise this era isn’t even close to modern day. The fuel usage of the modern era is so impressive compared to back then alone, thanks to all the modern goodies. I think one day we’ll look back on the current era of F1 and think of Mercedes and Lewis and Vettel much like the likes of Schumi, Ferrari, and senna, and mclaren.
@@BooneLuebchow yeah of course technology wise this era is the most impressive and advanced form of F1. But in pursuing it, they've lost the essence of the sport, with what it began with. The cars are so damn advanced that the grid order simply doesn't move around as much if at all. There's nothing particularly exotic about the cars outside the technology. Everything just lacks that character. Every track before had its defining character. Now most of the tracks are simply there for FOM to make money.
I agree, even though I never liked the cockpit being so far forward in F1 or Indy. But the current cars look so automated and draped with fins and slots and wings, that they look junky. I don't like the halo but I'm for it if it keeps the drivers safer.
@@jugheadjones5458 there's considerable debate around how effective it really is. There's few crashes where having the halo would change much at all. It's another obstacle for drivers to overcome when trying to get out of a car on fire or upside down. For the most part it's scare mongering from health and safety nuts IMO. It makes the cars absolutely distasteful and the whole point of Motorsport is the thrill and excitement and arguably element of danger attached to it. The halo doesn't kill F1 on its own but it is collectively with other obsessions why some fans including myself see modern F1 so impure and diluted to reality. It's not thrilling or exciting. The faster lap times are simply down to the result of a race in downforce.
Damn this car is sexy! Love the sound and everything with it! Spot on with the filming aswell as usual Bozzy! Thank you for capturing theese so we can watch here!
What an honor to drive Senna's Lotus at Imola. I remember that fateful day in 94 when we lost the greatest driver of all time!

The iconiic black and gold livery of John Player Special is just stunningly beautiful. My favourite Lotus was the type 79 ground effect car, nicknamed "Black Beauty". The yellow Camel liveried cars were also gorgeious in my opinion. I still love the sound of the Cosworth DFV on the 79.

Right there where Kumschick pointed out is exactly where Ayrton died following the tangent of the old Tamburello curve, sad moment.

It's May 1st 2023 today. 29 years without Ayrton 😔🖤 Senna and this Lotus were amazing tandem.
Thank you, Rain Man. For everything...
Work of art, the car and video. Thank you.
I love the fact this is still running, and I understand why it’s running so hesitantly but man it’s kinda like a tease to see the car and not hear it running full revs or boost 😕
1v1 quickscope maybe the owner might allow someone with experience to drive it at its full potential
They can’t afford to destroy the motor or chassis as its irreplaceable...I’m surprised the owner even allows it on the track...it’s risky
I understand that completely, it’s the same reason why you’ll never see a 917K or similar pushed to a decent limit. It’s better than the car just sitting in a garage for sure, but it is kind of a shame. I’d probably do the same though tbh, would not want to pay a repair bill for a Lotus 98T lol
I know what you mean. Saw Senna in this car and the rest of the turbo cars of that time. At full boost they sounded fearsome!! Nothing like in this video. But still greatfull to see it is still running. A true historical race car
O carro mais bonito de todos os tempos da f1, que saudade do eterno Ayrton Senna
Ayrton!!! Obrigado!!! Many thanks for share this incredible video!!! Best regards!
This black lotus was a beast, the most beautiful car in F1...
Hoje na f1 os pilotos dirigem os carros e na época do eterno Senna se pilotava essas máquinas !🇧🇷🏁
This is the car that got me into formula 1 & Ayrton Senna back in 1985, as he qualified for pole position at the Adelaide circuit Australia. However, to me, the Lotus Renault 98T was the sexiest formula 1 car, ever built (released for the 1986 season). In fact, I was in love with the car (97T at Adelaide) so much, that I wasnt sure whether I would follow the car (team lotus) or Ayrton Senna, if Senna was to depart from the team. Although it too was a beautiful machine in its own right, I was very upset when lotus dumped its JPS sponsorship (a 14 year matrimony - excluding 1979, which had Martini Racing livery) in favour of Camel for the 1987 season. When Senna departed to Mclaren, I followed Senna, as the lotus 100T was an ugly vehicle, & I was long in love with Senna by then. So as far as image being the assessment, Lotus JPS Renault 98T is my favourite; then Marlboro Mclaren MP4/4 runner up; and Lotus Camel Honda 99T takes third. Some honourable mentions include the Benetton BMW B186 (1986); Eagle-Weslake V12 (1967); Tyrrell 002 Ford-Cosworth V8 (1971); JPS Lotus 72F Ford (1972); JPS Lotus Ford - Cosworth V8 78 (1977); McLaren Mercedes MP4/23 (2008); Ferrari 312T V12 (1975); Red Bull Renault RB10 (2014); Matra MS120D (1972); Mclaren Honda MP4/6 (1991) ruclips.net/video/8c0o697F1g8/видео.html
For me it was the Rothmans and Compaq Williams', Marlboro and West McLarens and JPS Lotuses

It might be low boost but one must remember this car is now a museum piece and this guy also likely has a family he'd like to go home to.
Exactly. These engines lasted at most 2 flying laps at qualifying boost, 1 race distance at race boost. This guy doesn't want to pay for a rebuild every time he takes it for a spin.
Wanker excuses.
And I'm pretty sure they want to preserve what is possibly the originality in terms of the mechanical components that are on the car minus the fuel cell and some rubbers, other components but the engine itself might be original who the hell is trying to destroy that
