1970 Porsche 917K: Warm Up, Demonic Downshifts & RAW Flat-12 Sound!

- After almost 6 years I was finally able to see again the white and blue Zitro Racing Porsche 917 (chassis 917-025) I recorded in Monza during a historic racing weekend. The track is still Monza but this time the event was a quiet and magic track day organized by Kuno Schaer, so I was able to better capture the sounds of the Flat-12. The car was driven by Peter Vögele.
I apologize for not having cut the warm up scenes that much but, understand me: one hour before I was getting out of bed and then my chest was shaking being behind that beast warming up. It made my day, and it was only 8.30 am.. Video on track starts at 3:39

Now Imagine driving this down the Mulsanne Straight at 190+mph, at night, in the rain. Those drivers had nerves of steel!
More than 190, there rumors talking about 250 mph with qualy setup
They topped out at about 225 so definitely over 200 plus for over a minute on the Mulsanne straight.
Yeah, I can only imagine. It had to be a rush topping out at 248 mph before they put the chicanes in to "slow" things down. Think about how fast those distance signs to the right hander at Mulsanne must have flashed by! The guy is on the brakes and running down the gearbox and is hoping someone didn't mess up the corner so he can jump on the throttle and start back up the gearbox. And you hope it didn't just start raining and you still have your dry tires on. You are so right they are some pretty special people that drive that race. Be well and safe, peace to you and yours.
BIG Balls!
That's like saying imagine makinG love to a beautiful woman... You don't need nerves of steel to drive it.. You need them to not drive it!
i can appreciate the fact that you didnt "pollute" the audio with music. that thing sounds amazing
Bozzy never does that. Main reason this channel is so popular! agreed, amazing!
It is an engine sound video. Why would anybody in their right mind add music to it?
That is music.
Why would he do that?

Those downshifts should make the UNESCO world heritage list.

Too much money not to much skill? LFB? Lovely car.
54 years old and still sounds better than 95% of modern cars
The pause in sound when up shifting, the aggressive sound of down shifting under breaking...beautiful.
@@Ben_Chillin if you know old Porsche’s they used to have extremely long gears, i don’t think that the driver was inexperienced, those old gearboxes were just a pain the the ass
I think the gearbox needed warming up as well. The shifting got quicker the longer the video went on.

@@Ben_Chillin With all due respect it seems you know nothing about driving an old-school racing car...
@@alexcawthorne811 Not just that but the 917 was notorious for having a hard gearbox to work with back in 1970. Combine that with a driver who doesn't want to damage it, yeah the gear changes are going to be slow.

Well, it's almost a year after my first comment and nothing has changed - I still try to listen to this veritable symphony on wheels as often as possible. Sorry my Italian friends, but there is no flat 12 Ferrari engine that comes close to replicating the incredibly strong, virile sounds produced by this Porsche flat 12. Simply wunderbar!
Rotary mazda 787b!
@@valeriotempesti3331 - The Mazda is too buzzy sounding for my likes, sounds more like a high performance weed wacker! I for one am glad those damn rotaries are gone as they were obnoxiously loud and very high pitched - very annoying for race fans to listen to for any length of time. That feeling was widespread so SCCA required a muffling system that was mandatory on the mix master Mazdas. The Porsche has a much more mechanical sound to it, almost harmonious and much nicer to listen to than the rotary engine.
@@Loulovesspeedjust say you're a Porsche diehard
@@sparkgrid I'd rather not say that as I respect and like many cars and many makes that fashioned a vehicle which made its mark on international racing history. For that matter, I like the 917-30 Can Am car more, not for the sound it made, but for the incredible level of destruction it dealt to ALL competition in the Can Am series! The Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe gets my nod for one of the best sounding engines as well as its achievement in capturing the World Manufacturer's Championship - the only American conceived and built vehicle to have done that.....to this very day! 🤠 🏆 🏁
@@Loulovesspeed I get your point, but then just say disliking the 787b is just your personal preference, cause it's glorious

PLEASANTLY SURPRISED no pathetic music over the engine sounds, Bravo!!!👍👍
Other editors take note!!!
Now THAT would have been hard to do! (^_^)
would have been funny if music started just as the car started running
I completely *agree.* It is so damn annoying to hear some useless jabber when these beautiful, rare engines are singing. It's not only racing videos either.. A few days ago, I watched a video about tanks, and I can't remember what type it was (maybe a king Tiger) ..and there was actually audio of it running that was a few years after the war. It was color, and with a very decent recording.. trouble was, the narrator wouldn't shut up until the scene passed. Bad production. This is a great vid. The engine speaks for itself, and speaks well.
@MP Trolly McTrollerton, Don't worry little guy, someday your girlfriend will explain it to you and it will all make sense. You have a Splendid Day!😁👍

I second the motion.
I hooked the ph to my McIntosh pre through a pair of Krells and cranked this video!
The engine IS the music.
You must be new to this channel
I totally agree, madfzr. There are even official clips from manufacturers here where you can't hear the engine because it is drowned out by some synthesized rubbish "music".
The first time I saw one of these cars I was struck by how small they truly are. Just a pile of pipe welded together with a massive tire at each corner, covered with a bit of sexy fiberglass ... and that unforgettable, brutal engine in the center of it all. Those were better times gents, better times.....
Yeah same for me, they're tiny!
Massive Engine, huge tires, not even any room for your feet, we hung them out over the nose.
Indeed
Better than now? Lol no
@@shmikeyify Yes, I think the mid-20th Century was a better time.
Have two lasting impressions - this thing’s alive (kind of at least) and definitely alien to this dull world. Huge respect for guys who actually raced these back then.
I can't think of a word that describes how absolutely awesome that flat 12 sounds. It's a land based rocket ship on wheels.
Those shifts sound so brutal. Shows how far transmission engineering has come.
Do you not mean hasn't come ?
Transmission has nothing to do with the sound other than the speed of the shifts.
Sorry, I meant the only transmission sound that applies here is the speed of the shifts. If you were inside you would most likely hear the gear whine from the strait cut teeth.
maybe it is the drivers first time in the car, maybe it’s fresh rebuild and the mechanic told him to go easy on the gear box, who knows. But Past videos of the car you’ll hear fast shifts
@@fsca72 First time wouldn't matter and a worn gearbox would definitely need to be treated better than a rebuilt one. Other videos show that this car can in fact shift much faster and harder, however.

When I was a little boy playing with my toy race cars, this is the sound I had in my head. In my opinion, it's the absolute essence of what a racing car should sound like and after 50 years it's still gives me goosebumps. I've been fortunate in my life to have owned some really great automobiles. 440 SIX PACK Challenger, 427 Corvette, GT350 Shelby, lots of Porsche 911's, BMW M3 and M5 but nothing a normal person can buy comes close to a Porsche 917. I still can't get that flat 12 sound out of my head and hopefully never will.
Roy Webster You can actually buy a 917 replica from a shop in Australia that has the ORIGINAL 917 blueprints. AND its street legal too. Only problem is getting an original flat 12 engine(or build one if you have deep pockets. Check out this video

Then youve never heard the Mazda 787b....
The only other engines that can rival the flat 12 Porsche were the Matra and BRM V12s, those were Stradivarius...
You mean you didn’t have the wiggles back then?
You’re talking to people who had the big red car when they were kids. They sang songs while in the big red car.
The older kids in the 1920’s had a stick from a tree to play with, or rope.
Half the children from the 70’s and 60’s died already from drug overdoses.
There is something immensely satisfying about the harmonics of that engine.
It’s musical!
Spectrefang .........does sound fantastic. Only one I like better is the 787b

I was at the Laguna Seca historic races, a few years ago.
Porsche was the featured marque.
There were several 917's there.
The Penske/Donahue CanAm 917/30, was a flood of old days feelings.
Current race cars are crazy fast.....but, sadly... lack the "soul" of the previous cars.
I suppose that we can't go back....but for those of us, who experienced it, first hand. We have been truly blessed.
the 70s were such a good time for cars man. so many cool designs.
Raúl must’ve looked like a spaceship to some people then...
50s through 70s, then the 80s and cocaine happened.
The 70's were a terrible time for cars...
Ian Parrish more terrible than the 80’s?? Where they took beautiful cars and chopped them down a third of th size/power because of government regulations??
Or better than the 90’s where it was no comparison??

but why? Is it broken or is he just really slow at shifting?
@@salazam well it´s a manual from 50 years ago with 50 year old technology so it probably shifts like shit. If the car could be shifted quicker than I assume he´s trying not to wear out the clutch and other parts more than necessary cuz that´s what happens on quick upshifts. I´m positive that it is in fact not broken
The thing about Porsche is that they've never been known for being the fastest cars, or particularly outstanding in any one specific category. They seem to be all about two things - class and perfect balance. They just drive so smoothly and feel like an extension of the driver's own body. I never quite got the value of that until the first time I drove an older 911. Most generally, I am a pony car and muscle car kinda guy that dabbles in old pickup trucks and vehicles with some oddities that amuse me like a VW Thing. I've never been much into brands or prestige or any of that. But there is something about a Porsche that commands respect in the fact that it's one of the few companies left that still puts a heavy focus on the experience the driver will have while operating it, while also making the vehicle a visual work of art. A friend of mine that used to work in the vintage racing circuit got me into Porsche, and I'll forever be grateful that he did. What a wonderful dream to chase.
This is the one that was the fastest. over 230mph from what engineers clocked. The beast that ate em all
Your a complete moron....
The Answer of the 1970 years in Le Mans was clear he was ithe Fastest .And the Ingeneer Piech he constructed the Motors was an Genie!
I went from a 10.9 second Fox body Mustang to a heavily modded 1966 911, RSR body kit, turbo suspension and brakes, carbed 3.0SC engine with headers and cams, 1800lbs. The Mustang would plant you in the seat and keep you there up to 140, the Porsche? You had to be strapped in it was so tight in the twisties and stopped on a dime. Totally raw and amazing car! I miss it! Manual everything, total drivers car. Cornering was a little counterintuitive until you learned to use trailing throttle oversteer to your advantage, then lunch it and four wheel drift out of the corners like the rearend was mad at the frontend.
You’ll have one soon

This brings back memories of going to Mosport in the 70's with my father. The sights, sounds, smells and sensations come flooding back...so awesome. Thanks!
I lived in Ohio back then and made regular rips to Mosport and Watkins Glen during the Can-Am series days. Never been anything like it to this day. We were at the Glenn the last year they allowed camping in the infield the year they torched the bus in the mud bog. Precious memories!
@@netcoyote9238 I live in Ontario and went to a ton of races at Mosport with my dad. About 10 - 12 years ago we watched the 24hr American Le Mans series. I love the sounds and smells of burning fuel. Even at 3am haha! What a great time.
I can still remember the sound of these 917’s coming out of Moss corner and up the back straight at Mosport. Absolute magic.
I was barely old enough to drive and me and a buddy drove to Mosport in 73 to watch our first race - CanAm, won by Charlie Kemp in a 917-10 CanAm turbo. You're right about Moss Corner: the sound of 24 big block V8s (and a couple of flat 12s) roaring down the chute on the first lap is something I'll never forget!

I watched these cars race at Laguna Secs. The Can Am races. The 917 cars dominated. Completely. Standing at the fence in the Corkscrew the sound was unbelievable. Thx for sharing your memories
I was lucky enough to grow up close to Road Atlanta.
Many track days listening to a SINGLE Panoz LMP car was just orgasmic.
You could hear every shift 1.5 miles away on the other side of the track.
This brings back those days. Thanks.
When you hear them running solo it’s just completely different sounds you can hear that we’re drowned out in races.
I lived near the Hockenheimring (before they made it gay) and on the weekends could hear the scream of the Formula cars or SBK bikes. I rode my bicycle through the woods once and tried to peek through the fence but you couldn't see anything. You sure could hear them though!
I don't know about "orgasmic" though. That's kinda weird.
No matter which angle you look at it, it's glorious. And when it comes to life, you enter into mechanical Heaven. If there is ONE car I would love to have, it's that one. The Mother of all race cars.

The greatest car ever made. Pedro Rodriguez's win in the 1970 1000 Km at Brands Hatch is still considered to be one of the greatest motor races of all time where, after having to pit after being black flagged, he went on to win by an astonishing five laps in pouring rain leading a Porche 1-2-3-4 victory. The banshee wail of its air-cooled flat twelve on full war cry is the most beautiful sounding engine ever. (The one here is being treated gently just like the fifty year old lady that she is).

Clarence Calkins to see how much racing has changed in the last 50 years
....and the men who drove these back then at 240 mph did it with no driver's aids. No computers, no traction control, etc.
@@FlyinBrian777 And no sense of fear. A lot of good drivers feared the car and few had the nerve to hold it at anything above 180 initially and 200 subsequently. The two problems were the first cars could do 230+ yet couldn't easily handle it (talk to Ritchard Attwood). When they got the aero sorted the next prodlem was the Engine grenading itself. Derek Bell was one of the few to top out at 240+ yet to do so was within 100rpm (not much in a race car) of being wrote off with the car. The 917 was and is a brilliant car, but the almost cavalier nature of the beast and those who drove it really makes modern sports pale in comparison. The 917 was a car that was never tamed. Please NEVER apologize for NOT cutting/ editing! Thanks so much for an awesome video!☮
4:51 that shift to pedal to the floor is literally the most disgusting engine noise ive ever heard(In a good way)
Taaha Hydrus because is ‘70 car? Just saying
Jesus fucking a popsicle...

“Sir you’re mounting those seats upside down.”
“I know”
They dont make them like this anymore. Absolute monster of a car
Seeing and hearing amazing race cars like this close up, in person, you literally soak them in- engineering details, how they look, the way they vibrate your body when idling and revving.
Amazing!🥰🏁
Nobody 49 years from now will be posting videos of electric race cars and saying ‘man, listen to that sweet sound!’
You damn right!!!!
People will still be posting the 917 when it's 100 years old though
100% agree!!!!!!
I mean people may not, but have you heard the Gen 2 Formula E cars? They sound pretty neat
You said it all
Absolutely love that flat 12 sound. Especially going thru the gears.
that triple downshift at the end is the perfect ending. What a beast!
What an absolutely glorious sound, modern race cars maybe faster than older cars, but they certainly can't match the sound of older race cars....
Nice to hear real shifting. We're so used to hearing the snappy paddle shifting now, we forget what the real thing sounds like!
Ok boomer
@@maziu27 Not ok coomer!
He's clearly being cautious changing gear though. 50 years ago that gearbox would have been getting far more abuse and it would sound even better.
Though 50 years ago it only had to survive the race after that it didn't matter if it was knackered.
@@theant9821that gearbox these days worth $100,000s if not millions. also using 50+ year old gearbox technology so can never be too careful with the dodgy race worn gears and synchronizers
Wow, what a lovely car - and that sound is incredible. This to me was the golden age of racing, where it took a lot of skill and nerve to drive these things, with all inputs being manual - no paddle shifters, electric clutches, etc....
That is truly one of the most incredible sounding race cars ever!!
Eargasm!!!!!! 😊 If you don’t smile when you hear this symphony…… We can’t help ya.
This was the golden era for Porsche. I've loved Porsche since I was a teen. I used to have a 914. Thanks.
Back in '76 my first car was a '66 Karmann Ghia.. "I liked it". My dad had a '65 Porsche 356c, a year later he got in a wreck in his car and donated the engine to mine....... then "I loved it".
Cymon Cyrado Funny-in ‘76 I bought a ‘66 912! Had it 4 yrs, loved it!! Saw a 917 on 3rd st in LA in 75 or 76. Back then was prob not a kit car🤷♂️🏆
I had a 924,....she was a bit underpowered but so fun to drive. It was on rails in the corners!
you had a car that a 6cyl mustang can outrun on any course lmao. youre welcome
Jeff Lee a 70’s v6 mustang? No sorry took Ford 40 years to catch up you say?
A true icon. A true porsche and A TRUE CARPORN. 917 is the only iconic car I love the most because just see it. Feel it and hear it
The peformance from a 50 year-old ace car that ran the world's most famous endurance, with speeds that rival and mostly surpass the same class cars today is nothing short of astonishing.
Everything was more intense in 1970, more exciting. No electronic distractions. It's good to see and hear this survivor.
8:00-8:15 could listen to that on a loop for hours
same dude
eargasm
I love how this is a Porsche 917, and the video is 9:17 long.
Brandon Lewis you beat me at commenting that lol
I love how you copied the top comment

Intentional?
The sound of this car is absolutely incredible.
No surprise that this 54 year old car is as smooth as glass on the track, hats off to Porsche !!!!!
