Wow, thanks for posting this. I’ve waited such a long time for a tutorial. Now I can finally start my 917!
lol
Lmaoooo
what is the tutorial to put the engine off? Share please :-) :-)
Legend!
‼️⁉️🤣✌
Just dreaming this will come handy one day.
If you have never seen it, Alte Schule, Porsche racer Willi Kauhsen talks about how Mark Donahue drove the 917. Very funny
@@teutone5866 going to ✔️ it out now... Thanks
More of these types of intimate videos please. Very interesting
I agree!!!
That's like getting my wife ready to go out on a date.
ant that the truth
Before a date, your wife needs 2 batteries and 12 squirts of petrol? I think I'd forget about the date and just order in.
Just make sure you uncover her trumpet and make sure the knobs are pushed in
The best comment and best replies...
But this is only 5 mins with concise instructions and total repeatability.
I appreciate how slowly and clearly he spoke the instructions.
Efficiency of language. The art of brevity.
@@masterofsaveloy That man was born to be an instructor.
Except for the “plenty of voltage” part.” Lol
Have been around cars all my life, it’s something I will never forget, around 20 years ago seeing them fire up one of these at Goodwood! You make it’s sounds simple, but in reality is waking an animal from hibernation. One of the greatest automotive creations of all time, without doubt the greats Porsche
Yep! When considering the development issues Porsche had with its 3-liter prototype engine in 1969; the 4.5 then 5 liter, flat 12 engine was a marvel from the get-go; just as long as the engine was kept under 8.2K RPMs . . . at least that's what Derek Bell told in an interview years later (YT video post by 'peterwindsor'), as that what the 917 design engineer Norbert Singer told him. As Bell related Singer saying the engine would _let go_ at 8.2K RPMs.
Yes and thats why I hate electrical cars. Awsome sound. It will wake up even dead people.
The 917 is the SR-71 of the four-wheeled world. 🤯
I just love the fact that thing actually has a frikkin' KEY! I can see it now at LeMans... "OK, fire her up!" "OK, where's the key?" "I thought YOU had the key..."
It's similar to starting a vintage warbird. "Remove Before Flight" is perfect. What a lovely beast.
Now THAT was a happy ending.
Lots of foreplay!
Insane procedure for an insane Porsche.
The sound is incredible!
I worked for Porsche. What a thrill. I was in Atlanta and there was a 917 #21 in the main gallery. During a short break I was over at the car and taking a few photos. I went to the door and it opened. Yes I climbed into the most iconic Porsche of all time. I took it in for about 3-4 minutes, which seemed like hours before the security guard came. over and asked me to remove myself from the car. I told him it was unlocked. Back to class. About a half hour later three very German suits came into my class and asked me to come with them. They asked me what I was doing with the 917. I explained. I was told to not go into that car again. At lunch one of the Germans came up to me and asked me to come with him. We went to the elevator and went to the lowest floor. He showed me around and I got to see some of the most amazing cars ever built. He was very nice and I thanked him for the tour. I would do it over again. Got back to my dealership in LA and was chewed out by my GM. Then asked how was it. Can anyone spare 40-50 M .... I will let you drive it every other weekend.
get off the crack pipe, friend....
One of the most beautiful cars ever, IMO. That sound!
3:01 "Remove before FLIGHT",
thats exactly the right word for it ! :-)
Most awesome vehicle ever built. I have driving it on my bucket list. 917 K.
Everytime I see this car can't help but think Steve McQueen Lemans except the Gulf Porsche 917 was number 21 in the movie. Such a classic.
I’m a huge Porsche fan, have been for over 40 years, and this is the car that ignited my passion. What a technical marvel for its time, and the sound of that engine is heavenly.
A true piece of automotive art
Labor of love these cars. Hopefully it will go to a good home where its appreciated not only an fortune amassing car collector.
I love this machine....its not a car.
This is the most beautiful race car I know..... thanks for showing me / us
Now as a valet I'll finally know how to start one of these cars when they come in. Thank you!
I'm thinking, "this is like starting an airplane..." then at 3:00 I see the "remove before flight" cover. Awesome!
The sound of that legendary flat 12. OMG!!
Hmmm, now do the F1 on the lift :) - Two of my top 5 cars in one video... AWEsome!
Stay tuned....
This is an ideal example of "having the equipment, doesn't mean knowing how to use it"
One of my favorite cars ever. Nothing sounds like a 917
What a beautiful sound! Thank you!
Thanks for showing us this wonderful car in such detail !!
Awesome! Love the drama, befitting the raw power it releases!! 😎
GLORIOUS sounds!
Always loved the Gulf racing colour scheme.
This was more awesome than I expected. Great video.
No other engine that I know of makes that wonderful sound. Thanks for posting this.
What a magnificent beast of a race car. 😍😍😍
OMG 😲 😱 that sounds amazing
Ive been overlooking all these steps every morning, going for the school runs. I should check the manuals.
HOW can 4 people dislike this?
Must be GREEN idiots !
They have Lada's
Or Tesla’s.
What a sound! Love it
My grandpa just saw this car in the Sotheby's auction house in New York and now I'm obsessed!
I had a 917 AfX back in the day, in love ever since...
Wow, fantastic car (s).
I am very happy to see someone like these gentlemen doing their job so well, it seems easy.
Epic startup! This car is truly one of the classics….the engine! Check that cooling fan at the back….so many features
Finally, been googling "How to Start the 1970 Porsche 917 K" and after a few years your video shops up!! :)
You've just Jump-Started my heart! Thank You!
Magnificent! And like a thoroughbred, a key to winning is getting it in the gate without breaking a leg. The accumulated wisdom of dos and don'ts from many decades of lost races and blown engines is crisply articulated in this excellent presentation.
Such a lovely beast.
Somewhere I have a short video of me standing behind Bruce Canepa's 917k at Laguna Seca when he fired it up. I think it was either one of the Rennsport Reunions, or the Historic races, can't remember which. Epic
The 917K really is the goat. Excellent video. Thank you!
Clear, precise and knew his subject and who would have thought brake cleaner instead of either to start an engine especially a flat 12. Excellent video
It was an OMG ~~ Come to Jesus moment when that engine turned over and fired ... TY for sharing this.
The sound! i've been lucky enough to see one in person but it wasn't on. That sound it's so brutal and majestic.
Demonic sound, and I love it!
Che macchina ragazzi, dopo 50 anni fa venire ancora i brividi.
Paul obviously knows his stuff. Beautiful video for Petrol-heads. Thanks for the upload 🙂
wow the sound is amazing
Couldn't sleep, popped this guy on and I was right away. Very informative I thought.
This is one of the coolest video's I've ever seen on RUclips
Sounds like one hell of a machine, didn't expect that noise!
Thank you , as i operate my 917K mostly in Siberia, this tuto will be very useful 👍
"ignition on and crank over" unleashing unholy hell!!! Wish I had that as my ringtone.
What a symphony of glorious mechanical music
Ahh thanks man. I was already struggling with my own 917 to start her up this morning going to college. Had to take the Fiat Panda because I was running late.
after fifty years, the 917 still has the highest Top speed on the long straight at Le mans, at 246 mph. my 1970 911T only did about half that........but was still fun.....
What a piece!❤️
I love that sound.
Wow. Very impressive. Thank you for the video.
He's like the Bob Ross of cars... the way he explains it is therapeutic!
Thanks for posting .
That was awesome !
"I'm just popping down the shops "...
"You've been two hours man!"
"Yeah. I had to start the 917 first!"
Excellent, great info, thank you! Now I just have to get one....
Wonderful sound ... :-)
Hey RM, can you do some demos like this with different types of vehicles when Cars and Coffee come back? Great video 🇨🇦
This procedure is far more simple than starting my Vauxhall Viva half a century ago.
You had a Vauxhall that started???? Oh, go on with yourself.
@@titanuranus Actually, I needed two batteries to start the darn thing.
One battery for the starting motor, and one for the ignition.
Sometimes it really did start, believe it or not!
Fantastic!
Perfect! Now I know how to steal one, thanks RM!
I love the "Remove before flight" fan cover! LOL
Was that spinning thing a fan for cooling the car? Was it air cooled, like their street cars at the time?
@@crawlinjohn Yes, it was an Air Cooled flat 12!
Well you learn something new everyday , brake cleaner for a pre start. Thanks for that 👍
@@dizzy2020 ok cool 👍yeah true it does have really toxic smell.
Not all brake cleaner is flammable these days…
@@montestu5502 ok
A real thrill about this car is the number of parts it shares with road going 911s.
Excellent!!
What a Tease!!!!again please 😬👍🏼
Ultimate dream !!
That was beautiful.
Thank you for the information, now all I need to do is win the lottery.
would you actually buy that though? I'd want something I could jump into and go have fun with easily
@@MikeDawson1 why wouldn't you drive it? I probably wouldn't go break neck speed scaring myself silly but I'd definitely buy one and drive it
@@MikeDawson1 dude, if you have the money and opportunity..... there is no fucking way I would not buy one. If you can afford this, you can probably have 50 other cars you can just jump into
Very cool, indeed! Nice idea with the brake cleaner for a prep start.
Thanks for video, awesome enggine😍😍😍
Two fantastic cars in Garage...
i love how he keeps saying."it's so simple" when It's anything but that. Easy is put key in, turn key. This is anything but that.
Love this
Ace video.
What a beast !
Wonderful
OMG When it finally started! My vision got a little blurry in one eye. 😿 What a engine!
Well, I'll have to get the 917 out of the garage again. Thanks for all the tips.
