G X MG I feel is a tad under appreciated. It’s remained in my top ten Godzilla films for a few years now despite not being one of my most rewatched movies. It is one of the few G movies where I remember the human element as well and as fondly as the monster parts. I really like the female lead, I really like the redesigns for the titular monsters, I liked some of the subplots. Really really solid movie

Having actually watched _Godzilla vs. Megaguirus_ recently, I can definitely say that I felt like the Meganulon and Megaguirus herself were basically inconveniences to the plot itself, with the major conflict, as you said, being between Godzilla and the JSDF. It's a pity, too; I quite liked Megaguirus and her brood. They deserved a much better movie.
And in addition to the problems with the G-Graspers you already mentioned, they just felt kinda _cheap._ Like they were G-Force or any other anti-Kaiju agency on a shoe-string budget.
Now about Kiryu…by far my favorite Mechagodzilla. Awesome look and weaponry, and his backstory gives him a greater sense of character than any previous Mechagodzilla. But I can’t help but wonder…if they have a big gun that freezes things to the point where their atomic structure collapses in one shot, what did they need the big robot for?

I remember watching Godzilla vs megagurius when I was a kid, it was the first official Godzilla movie from Toho that brought me into the world of Godzilla/Kaiju. I was very fortunate enough to see the last 30 mins of the movie, as the final battle of the movie between Godzilla and Megagurius was the best thing about the movie. The next two films that introduced me to Godzilla were Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla Tokyo sos. For a while, I use to be a big fan of the millennium era and I considered it my favorite Godzilla era, but looking back, it’s not really all that good aside from GMK and final wars, while the rest of the movies were either decent (G2K, Tokyo sos, X mechagodzilla) or mediocre (vs megagurius). In fact, I didn’t even knew Godzilla x mechagodzilla was its own separate movie as I thought it was the same movie as Tokyo sos lol. That is my backstory on what I think of the millennium era and how that brought me into Godzilla.

Very well done. This might be your best video, and it’s on one of my favorite G movies, and my favorite of the Millennium series. Yes, even above GMK. I loved Akane’s story, her battles with self worth, and how it’s paralleled with Kiryu coming into its own as a force for good. G himself appears a little weak here, and him just leaving after the first fight still bugs me, but the themes are so strong, the story so resonant, the final fight is my absolute favorite, and Kiryu is my favorite version of MechaG. Love this movie and this was a great analysis of it and how execution and concept are important in different ways.

  • @BiitoreinGoji94
    @BiitoreinGoji94 4 года назад +9

This was a very deep analysis. Thank you.
I do have one issue with Against MechaGodzilla, that being a big plothole. The Oxygen Destroyer showed to dissolve its victims down to the bone and disintegrate said bones. Serizawa even said so. In Against MechaGodzilla, Kiryu is constructed around the bones of the original Gojira which should have been disintegrated. I get that it sounds cool on paper, and ties in to the theme of anyone with a bad past can still do good, but it's still an inconsistency. Had the bones been from another godzilla, this wouldn't be an issue.

    • @vidwatcher30s
      @vidwatcher30s 4 года назад +4

The problem with that idea is the filmakers wanted Kiryu to have the original Gojira's memories so they could use those flashbacks as a device to explain his behaviour. If they had introduced the idea that this is the skeleton of a completely different Godzilla, there would have been the problem of explaining that Godzilla's history and its effect on Kiryu. Just retconning the original film's ending was not only easier from a narrative standpoint but a dramatic one as well. Godzilla's original rampage of Tokyo in glorious black and white is such enduring cinematic imagery that the movie can simply drop the reference followed by Kiryu going berzerk and the audience just gets it. Flashing back to the life of a Godzilla we only just met (and after he was already dead) would have been far less effective. I do agree that the retcon makes the Oxygen Destroyer seem like a less fearsome weapon and I don't like the idea of changing anything about a movie that's as close to perfection as any film can probably get, but I understand why they did it. Thanks for reading my long rambling.

Flashing back to the life of a Godzilla we only just met (and after he was already dead) would have been far less effective."
To assume that writing a completely different Godzilla along with its own history and motivation is inherently problematic is to give up on creative writing. There were things the filmmakers could have done besides contradicting previously established rules. Like, having this completely different Godzilla remember dying in battle at the hands of KiryuGoji (or ShodaiGoji) long ago, and so Kiryu going berserk would be that completely different Godzilla wanting revenge, for example.
On top of that, I wouldn't consider it a retcon. Geekdom101 made a video discussing the difference between a retcon and a plothole. Retroactive Continuity is revising previously established information so it makes more sense, like Vegeta and Goku separating from Vegito inside of Buu in DBZ. People thought for years it was because of "bad air" until Super elaborated that potara fusion between mortals is not permanent. A plothole, on the other hand, is a straight-up contradiction. It should NOT happen. And besides, Omni made a video about plotholes before in response to Patrick Willems' idiotic SHUT UP ABOUT PLOT HOLES video.
And I too understand why it happened. The filmmakers wanted that emotional payoff. But emotional resonance and intellectual consistency are not counter balances. They can go together. The more consistent a story is in regards to established rules, the more engaged the audience can be, and therefore, the emotional payoff can be through the roof.

@@BiitoreinGoji94 You're right. It seems that I segued from explaining their decisions to defending them. Your idea of a third Godzilla...sounds pretty cool, actually!
You're also right about contradictions. They could have closed the plothole and kept their story (and the Millennium series' general fixation on the original film) the same by simply having Kiryu's DNA computer be created from a scale or other DNA sample left over from ShodaiGoji's rampage a la Godzilla vs. Biolante. They could have explained that since the DNA in the computer that runs their anti-Godzilla robot comes from Godzilla, the robot itself must be shaped like Godzilla for it to work properly. I don't THINK that makes any less sense than the movie as is.
Thank you for your perspective and for reminding me of Akira Toriyama's rather heroic efforts to keep Dragon Ball's plot more or less consistent with itself over the years.

Ive hid my love for godzilla my whole life, in high school and jr high i was what some might consider "popuar", i was an athlete and went to state for wrestling, i dated and eventually married the captain of the cheer leaders, i have a decent following on social media, but my wife only recently saw my nerd room filled with movie stuff, collectibles, figures, posters, my own personal fan art for basically any franchise people like in the geek community, lmao but its so nice to see when people point out what these movies genuinely did well from a filmmaking/writing perspective on a technical as well as emotional level.

I've always found it interesting that Against MechaGodzilla was essentially a remake or reboot of Megaguirus. Only it is improved in virtually every way. It is a leaner and meaner film, running almost 20 minutes shorter.... yet it does everything better, characters, production value, direction, writing, a more plausible (relatively speaking) plot with a more logical approach to the story.
I do like the much more active "smart and thinking" Godzilla of Megaguirus, and I tend to prefer the "clean reboot" sort of timeline provided in Megaguirus. That movie exists in a vacuum while the Kiryu double feature is tied to G54, Mothra, Gargantuas, and Space Amoeba, which is a little odd.

Honestly, I like Godzilla vs Megaguirus more than most people.
It’s plot is right up there with “guy invents annoying noise that saves the day” from the Showa era. It also at least took the opportunity to deepen the lore of monsters.
The fight is pretty decent as well. It’s nice to see a kaiju who relies on speed and evasiveness in a fight and has some humourous moments.
I think it sits comfortably in the middle of the pack of the franchise.

Your Second opinion thought process thought process has always struck me as unique and necessary to an established argument. I find it very important that people consider looking upon the monsterverse this way more often, as well as that I hope that the writers of newer Godzilla movies will be more careful of they right stories for their films, i.e. a balance between character depth and Godzilla’s screen time, and monster action at that. Upon watching this one, I find it to be set apart from most of the rest of the franchise for it’s good writing.

Excellent video, Omni Viewer, but I respectfully disagree with you assertion that Kiriko had no clear motivation. Her C.O. died sacrificing himself to save her - a sacrifice that would've been completely unnecessary if she had obeyed his order to retreat instead of insisting on staying behind to take another shot. I'm pretty sure she sees Godzilla as the embodiment of her own failure and feels that finishing what she started five years earlier will somehow redeem herself. That's what I got out of it anyway. I doesn't excuse her lack of an arc within the grey context of the film, but I still love the character because she's like the Khan Noonien Singh of human characters in Godzilla films. I especially get a kick out of the scene where she plants a bug on Godzilla and yells, "You can't get away this time!" as he swims away.
Also, I have mixed feelings about Godzilla's immobility in Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. Like most fans, I am used to seeing the Big G react to getting shot, and seeing him unflinching while getting pummeled with missiles and lasers did seem off to me, but upon repeated viewings, I began to wonder if that was a deliberate choice to make him seem even more menacing, as if he felt even less pain than other iterations of the character...

And I completely agree with take on Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, I felt like it was a good script underneath, but didn't stick the landing with it's execution. Kind of felt like two different movies duct taped together. I wouldn't be surprised if the writers couldn't make up their minds on what story they wanted to tell, so they tried to combine the two ideas. But as I mentioned, it just didn't work on all cylinders and thus made the movie pretty boring and uninteresting.

I have something to point out that makes Godzilla's motivation in Godzilla Tokyo S.O.S make even less sense. In the beginning of Godzilla X Mechagodzilla he attacks Japan but that was way before Kiryu was even built and nowhere near the place where the AMF was holding the Godzilla 1954 skeleton. So how can he be after Kiryu (because as the Shobajin explain) if the spirit of the dead Godzilla is guiding him when his first attack has nothing to do with Kiryu? The answer is lazy writing just like the retcon of the bug in the DNA computers being fixed so we can have a scene where Kiryu runs wild again just to wrap up the story.

And Disney Star Wars is vastly superior to the Prequels. On average, I'd say Disney SW is better than the Original Trilogy, though it never exceeds the Originals at their best. And nothing will ever top the original 1977 Star Wars (yes, I saw it when it was called just Star Wars, before it was renamed A New Hope). Just my 2 cents.

I would have the final battle have more emphasis on the military being in a desperate position to where they intentionally let the two kaiju battle it out and wait for the victor as they attempt regroup, re-stratigize, and prepare the Dimension-Tide canon for when either the battle ends or they have the perfect opportunity. I would essentially have more emphasis placed on they military's incompetence in the situation and subsequent ramifications of their failure to adequately handle the possibility of things going wrong and realize their seeming constant lazer-focused goal on Godzilla let the lose sight of other possibilities and threats.

    Great analysis video...
Too bad that Mechagodzilla remains a boring opponent. To me, he hasn't been anything interesting (or plausible) since the Showa Era; and worse, Kiryu is so implausible (even for this series) that I just can't accept it.
But yeah, Megaguirus is just as boring...but at least she's - somewhat - new instead of just being one of the "heavy-hitters" recycled YET again.
But here's the damned-honest truth; movies where Godzilla is the Antagonist...they're so BORING; they're played-out - by the time these movies came out, we already had the entire Heisei era that tried to pretend Godzilla was the antagonist too. Now granted, I'm not saying Godzilla should go back to being the unquestioned Hero of the late Showa Era; but I prefer it when Godzilla's intentions are more ambiguous - where you're not quite sure what he's going to do or why he's gonna do it. Having Godzilla just be "the badguy" is just boring. Especially since nobody's buying it anymore.

    • @GanonGhidorah
      @GanonGhidorah 3 года назад

      @@shayscruggs7829
Well thank you for asking; if you still want to know -
Mechagodzilla is a great _villain._ And that's the problem...Every single time Mechagodzilla has been brought-back...he's _Not_ the villain; he's supposed to be the hero built by the humans to defeat Godzilla.
The problems that I have with that are numerous...
Firstly; the idea of a robot duplicate of the lead character. It's a story-trope that is ascribed with villainy; the clone, the doppleganger, the shadow, the evil reflection; they're meant to be a test of a hero's fighting abilities, to be able to defeat something so similar to themselves. So it comes off as a bit of cognitive dissonance when we're supposed to be rooting for the mechanical knock-off to beat Godzilla. The idea of creating a robotic duplicate of something is - in and of itself - a villainous act, so it can't be accepted that the humans are making the machine for a force of good.
On that note...It doesn't make sense for mankind to build Mechagodzilla _at all._
I cannot conceive of any situation where human-beings making Mechagodzilla as not only possible but is ever a good idea.
Mechagodzilla as a character was conceptualized back in the 70s as an evil doppleganger of Godzilla built by malevolent aliens who are trying to take-over the Earth. In that scenario, Mechagodzilla makes perfect sense; he was built to be a mechanical copy of Godzilla - as a kind of mockery of the Hero Monster, as well as a means of outmatching him (improving him as the Aliens would believe). Plus it would be a form of psychological confusion and torment for the humans considering they disguised him as Godzilla in the beginning.
"We've replaced Godzilla with a war-machine that does our bidding, and then we destroyed the real Godzilla so he can't protect you! Hahahah!"
Plus, being Aliens it's far more believable that they would have access to superior technology that humans have, so it's far more acceptable that they'd be able to build a mechanical Godzilla and pack it with all kinds of weapons. And because its evil, it makes more sense for it to be such a dangerous weapon; Mechagodzilla was probably Godzilla's deadliest opponent in the 70s and that's what made overcoming him such an accomplishment in the movie.
But when Mechagodzilla was rebooted in the 90s (and every adaptation since) it literally makes _no sense_ for humans to build him. First off, like I said - it makes sense for Aliens to build Mechagodzilla as a means of mocking and psychologically tormenting their opponents - Godzilla and humanity.
But I cannot believe in any situation where humans building a _robot dinosaur_ to fight another dinosaur would ever get approved...Because to the humans, there's no point in making Mechagodzilla look like Godzilla. If you're going to build a giant fighting robot...why waste time and resources making it look like Godzilla? Why not make a vaguely humanoid mech? - without the excessive weight of a tail and spikes and general bulk of Godzilla - the thing will be more agile, and a more effective fighter.
Speaking of such - most people say that they build Mechagodzilla as a means of matching Godzilla's combat-style...Except that's not quite true is it? (It might be true for Kiryu considering the thing was actually able to move) Let's look at Mechagodzilla II...it's fighting capabilities consist of standing on one place and shooting weapons at Godzilla from a distance...Then hovering off the ground and shooting Godzilla from a distance. The only time the thing actually gets into combat range with Godzilla, it gets knocked down.
The thing is built like a tank and moves like one; it's too heavy to actually move on its own and it certainly can't fight back...
So my perspective is, considering that this thing is just a Big Gun that looks like Godzilla...why bother making it look like Godzilla? If it's just gonna be a big gun, make a big gun and shoot Godzilla with it.
The original could actually throw-down with the monsters in addition to being loaded with projectile weapons; it practically tore King Caesar apart before Godzilla showed up.
But not only do I think it's pointless for them to build something that _looks_ like Godzilla...I'm saying it's downright _impossible_ for them to do so.
Like I said - Aliens had superior technology to our own. Humans just don't have the technological prowess to build something as large and as complex as Mechagodzilla and actually have it be able to move and function. And hell, this was decades ago and the only advancements we've made are machines that are about 20 feet tall - this is a 400 foot robot we're talking about.
Hell, even in the movies they point out how unprepared humanity is for this thing; they have to reverse engineer future technology from Mecha-King Ghidorah. But even then, I doubt they'd be able to build a fully functioning robot from the ground-up.
Then when it comes to Kiryu, they have to graft the robot _around_ a Godzilla skeleton just to have the base model of what to build off of? That sounds like the most absurd thing possible; not only are those the bones of a dead animal, they've been lying in the ocean - exposed to the elements and all kinds of bacteria and undersea pressure - for nearly 50 years...it's a miracle that the bones are even still in-tact. Any severe impact - like say, fighting another Godzilla - should've immediately shattered them.
Granted, Kiryu is a mixed-bag for me. Because of it's genetic computer having coded the original Godzilla's DNA, it's abilitiy to go rogue and attack Japan is actually interesting. In a lot of ways, it's the kind of malevolent force that Mechagodzilla _should_ be...There's even more potential for story-elements, considering that it's a robot that _thinks_ it's really Godzilla. The problem is, the movie doesn't do anything interesting with that as once Kiryu runs out of fuel, it goes right back to being a puppet for mankind.
My point is - Mechagodzilla makes the most sense if he's built by invading aliens and _not_ mankind.
That's why I don't want Mechagodzilla in the Monsterverse - or any mecha for that matter. This series is supposed to be taking a more realistic approach to these monsters - albeit with a grain of salt. The idea of building giant robots to combat them is just not feasible for the tone of these movies; especially if mankind is the one who is building them, and yet has twice been shown Godzilla's overall benevolence.
But finally and most importantly, I feel like Mechagodzilla suffers the same problem that Ghidorah has; _overexposure._ He's been used too many times across the franchise, to where it's almost expected that he'll be brought back in a new incarnation every generation of films. When I watched Godzilla growing up, I wanted to see _new_ monsters with each movie. But once you get to a certain point, it becomes Mothra, Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla all over again.
Having Mechagodzilla brought back, it's now expected that he'll be built to by mankind to be a weapon against Godzilla - a weapon that is by and large, destined to fail. That's boring and predictable...and yet they've done it across two different generations.
Hell, the most interesting thing they've done with Mechagodzilla since the 70s, was the second Anime Movie; where instead of it actually being Mechagodzilla, it's a city made out of the programmable living metal being controlled by Megodzilla's computer brain. - A departure from the norm, but far more fascinating than what had been done before - bordering on a horror movie rather than a Kaiju film.
And worse, whatever current version of Mechagodzilla there is always gets _forced_ on us; like the classic tournament fighting games where Mechagodzilla is the Final Boss - and he's always so overpowered and agile...when in the movie he comes from, he's heavy, clumsy, and could be easily knocked-over. My perspective was, there were a lot more interesting villain monsters that deserved the spotlight but got passed-over in favor of what was effectively a lie. By comparison, Destroyah - who should physically be the strongest monster on the roster - is portrayed so weak in the games.
What's ironic is that in Destroy All Monsters Melee, we clearly have Mechagodzilla II, but he is under the control of the Vortaak and is dangerously combat effective, much more like Mechagodzilla I from the Showa movies. To me, that shows that the concept for a robotic Godzilla only makes sense as part of an alien-invasion plot.
Well...I think that covers everything that I wanted to say on the subject.
TL;DR; I find Mechagodzilla to be implausible, misused, overused and boring.

Godzilla is whatever you pretty much want him to be. You can find any one of those movies that’ll portray him as nuclear disaster, uncaring force of nature, superhero or whatever kind of villain. It’s just in the case of GxM he’s the villain. I can understand if you wouldn’t buy it, but I can definitely buy it, because I mean…. Well he’s Godzilla. A monster.
In the context of the Godzilla universe, well humans building Mechagodzilla is something which doesn’t make sense, and neither does a giant nuclear-based creature who’s own weight would crush his kneecaps out to where he’d be dead before he’d even realize it. There’s not exactly a whole lot of logic that you can apply to Godzilla to make it be completely sensible. That and though Mechagodzilla is a doppelgänger, that doesn’t always have to be a trope used for villains, it can be used as a good thing. The logistics behind the bones not dissolving inside Kiryu and all don’t exactly matter, because there’s all sorts of things you’d have to pick apart at that point.
But there actually is a reason as to why the Mechagodzilla is, well, Mechagodzilla. If there’s a tiny gun in front of me with no one manning it, and it takes a slow amount of time to charge up, and I can tell that it’s about to… well all I have to do is step out of the way. Then I’ll just kick it over or something. That’s basically what Godzilla will do if it’s just a big gun. But if you build a mechanical device that can physically take him on since there’s really nothing else that can match him, then a robot Godzilla should do the trick to outmatch him. It’s just that Kiryu is made to pick up the slack whereas the absolute zero cannon was meant to be the killer blow.
I honestly don’t even think that aliens making a Mechagodzilla is more plausaible or realistic than humans. That or them even taking the shape of humans even if the ones in the Godzilla movies aren’t actually humans. We don’t have a select criteria for what any kind of alien life forms would really be like. There’s no evidence alien life forms in any kind of actuality would do something like build a Mechagodzilla or whatever, so it’s basically just as sensible as humans doing it- it’s not sensible at all to begin with. I mean we could take apart countless more but then that would basically defeat the purpose of liking anything Godzilla related.

@@GanonGhidorah not gonna read that long ass unnecessary essay but don't say mechagodzilla is overused when ALL popular fictional characters are in the same boat. Godzilla is a character who can be a hero or a villain, same with mechagodzilla. Just because mechagodzilla started out as a villain doesn't mean that's his whole character, the idea of humanity or aliens building mechs to defend earth or conquer it has been a concept used both before and after mechagodzilla was created.
Since when is it a rule for a mech to only be used by aliens for their evil plans? I don't see evangelion or pacific rim following that rule. Don't complain about mechagodzilla being "overused" when godzilla is literally used more than mechagodzilla is. If godzilla's intentions are ambiguous then he's not relatable yet alone he doesn't have a personality in that context, this is why kiryugoji isn't liked personality wise by some fans, his intentions are never made clear and the only intentions that are somewhat implied (by the director and movie) are never fully confirmed.
This is why godzilla as a hero or a villain in other eras works better than what the kiryu saga tried to do with him.
