So other than famous people wearing it, what exactly makes it so special?
It simply is a waist long jacket that is quite fitted and has a pleasing silhouette. It comes in many different materials but the classic is a cotton poly blend which is 50% cotton 50% polyester. It's meant to be water resistant and weather resistant and therefore, it's not as soft to the touch as the inside which is 80% cotton and 20% polyester. Baracuta sells the g9 jacket in a range of options including suede leather, regular leather, camouflage, and teddy bear fabric. Sometimes you can also find them in tweed but frankly, the classic jacket is always the poly cotton blend which is what we're reviewing here today. The classic g9 generally has a solid outside color even though you can find it with patterns and stuff like camouflage these days.
On the inside, you usually find a plaid or a tartan out of green, red, blue, and white which is also known as a Fraser tartan. It feels quite soft, breathable, and comfortable just like the cotton ribs on the end of the sleeves and the waist. When you walk, you can hear your arms rubbing a bit on the shell but it's by no means as loud as the Canada Goose jacket
The classic g9 version features angled side pockets with a flap and a button closure, the more modern interpretations have snap buttons. The size I'm wearing in the video is a 42 which is pretty much true to size. It really isn't too big such like a Barbour Beaufort. I was positively surprised by the length of the sleeves in a size 42 which is much better than on all the Barbour waxed jackets we reviewed. Just like the iconic Burberry trench coat or the Barbour waxed jackets, the Baracuta g9 features a Raglan sleeve because it is better to let the water roll off. The front zipper is a double metal zipper from YKK and it works quite well.
Modern Baracuta g9 jackets are made of a shell fabric called Coolmax which is supposed to be very breathable and also water repellent. Today, the jackets are made in England but that wasn't always the case. There was a time it was outsourced to Asia and other countries but they brought it back to England for good measure. Looking at the seams, they all have a very high stitch density, they're straight and sewn very close to the edge so the workmanship, overall, is very good.
Overall, the garment feels very well made even though the YKK zippers are not the best ones on the market. Baracuta also pays attention to details, for example, if you look at the buttons, you can see the engraving Baracuta g9 and 1937 which was the year it was designed.
So now the big question, is the Baracuta g9 Harrington jacket worth it?
While $390 are not a bargain for a casual jacket that you will mostly wear during spring or fall season, I still think there is a place for it in your wardrobe.
First of all, it comes in a really large range of colors but it also has a very pleasing slim modern cut, even though it was designed in 1937, Frankly, before I bought one, I didn't anticipate liking it as much as I do now. Of course, the fact that James Dean and Steve McQueen wore it is certainly not detracting from it. At the same time, I'm more focused on the materials themselves and I'm really pleased with the length of the sleeves which is often something I find challenging because I have above-average long arms.
So in conclusion, I think the Baracuta g9 Harrington jacket is worth its money even at the retail price level for almost any man out there interested in classic men's clothing and even more casual clothing because it is a more casual jacket. Хобби
What is your take on the Harrington Jacket? Do you own one? What color?
I have never heard of this company until now but I have seen many of their jackets.
@@FaarisFarooq live and learn 😁
I have the g9 in the same color!
@@JC-vt6ln do you like it?
Do they come in different lengths (S,R,L) for each chest size? I would be a 42", but you are much taller than me, so I would like a 42 Short, if such a thing exists .
Somewhere one of those is sitting on the rack of a thrift store in my size for 5 bucks.
There are always loads on ebay.
I like this mentality. Love thrift stores!
I got one for 40 in a second hand shop in Hamburg/Germany. Good luck to you!
I found one today for $11 at Goodwill! They're out there!
Bought one for 30€ in a vintage shop and the owner did not know what it was, since in Italy we don’t have the same culture about this jacket.
I love my Baracuta G9! I bought the green one you are wearing in the video last year and I couldn't be happier! As said, it is extremely versatile and very well made! Thinking of getting the dark blue as well.
Great video again Raph! Thanks!
Great video as always, Raphael! As the owner of two G9s myself, I'm glad to see it featured! One additional nugget of information: Baracuta was acquired by an Italian company in 2012 (WP Lavori in Corso - the same company that owns Woolrich). I believe their strategy has since been to 1. move all production of the G9 back to the UK (at least for their core colors), 2. improving the overall level of workmanship and 3. slimming down the fit (which is why some customers in your comments, myself included, needed to size up one). This has allowed them to command higher prices, but - at least in my eyes - has elevated the product in turn. Totally agree that while it is not cheap, the full price for it is fair and makes it worth it.
The G9 Archive has a more relaxed fit than G9 Classic
I have one by J Lindenberg which I didn’t realize it had a name and was such an old design. Always appreciate how well researched and thorough your videos are.
I agree with the Harrington jacket being a very timeless and versatile piece. It is indeed worth its money. Excellent video Raphael, looking dapper as always
Purchased an olive green G9 when Allen Edmonds had them on clearance. Definitely worth the money and is often the perfect jacket for spring and fall weather. It has a mid century look which is distinguished and sporty. Can be dressed up or down, very versatile!
Love the content, very informative.
I especially love the history of the products, it's interesting.
Thanks for another great video.
Being a short and small framed guy, I have been having a hard time finding a well fitting casual jacket for lazy Sundays or a casual setting in general. I tried the G9 and it's modern cousins, but none of them fitted well. Then I tried Ben Sherman's take the Harrington in size small and it was a perfect fit. The cut is slimmer, but that suits my low hight and small build. Now I finally have a jacket that does not look like I borrowed my father's.
I happily bought one at full price as a spontaneous buy yesterday from Cable Car Clothiers in San Francisco. I don't make a lot of money but I keep my stuff forever and trying to think about quality and heritage when I purchase items. This will be a lifetime jacket.
I have 5 Baracutas and I love them all! Best jacket and the most timeless piece a guy can own.
Finally this jacket got an episode. Great jacket, wear mine all the time and i dont think its overpriced for what you get.
Great video, recently bought a navy blue g9 and it's now my favourite jacket
Great video, thank you = i really appreciate these 'is it worth it' vids, and now i definitely will be buying a barracuda Harrington jacket
I have 2 Merc Harrington's, one in black and one in burgundy, and I love them! I think they're actually pretty versatile, can go with a mix of styles.
I stumbled on your channel and like your focus on the more distinct products that will be for life. So i went to the Barracuda website and they have a sale on some of the colors for $248. I like it and the Brigg umbrella...very nice. Thanks.
I realy live this channel. Everything I know about mens fashion i've learned from it
Before I watch, YES! My navy blue Baracuta Harrington has been worth every penny.
I also have a Merc winter wool Harrington and a Soul & Ska brand in mustard.
Hoping you include our Mod movement...
Wow I haven't had one in years at least not Baracuta , i have had harrington jackets by other manufacturers. I had a reversible one in grade school in the early 70's,tan and tartan, so cool. great vid.
Nice video, thank you. I own a G9 in "raisin" (purplish-brown) and love it.
I want a Harrington Jacket. The Baracuta G9 is lovely. Would love one... maybe some day
I love it. I have a green and navy one. Today I wore the green one to sand chinos and Belstaff boots. It just always fits great.
Thanks for the vid, I've been looking for a nice quality Harrington jacket and wasn't sure where to start, this review helped me to decide on getting one like this. I opted for a cobalt blue and love it. It was hard to pass up 40% sale on the Baracuta ;)
Wait, the zipper actually opens and closes? Whoa, that's amazing :-) I do have a Baracuta G-9 in navy and absolutely love it. One of the best looks out there.
Harringtons are such sharp, versatile windbreakers and comfy to wear. I have a tan suede Orvis, a black Izod, and a tan Baracuta. Always cool. The Navy will be my next acquisition.
Looks like reliable country-wear for the spring season...I really love the solid green.
Great vid! I got mine in dark navy. Everytime I'm wear it, I feel like a james bond.
Love the video keep up the good work. Ps love the navy color looks gorgeous
I like the green one even more as it is less common.
I bought Baracuta G9 SteveMcQueen stone color few days ago, jacket is so amazing i'm in love with this jacket, this jacket is worth every cent trust me, it also make you more confidient when you wear it. and don't forget to go size up if you gonna buy i usually wear XL but i bought XXL and it fits perfect.
Thanks for sharing!
Love your videos, because you give so much history and detail. I really like this one. I don't know how others feel but I personally will NOT purchase any jacket with the zipper slider on the right side. For men they were only made this way: I am older and I am disgusted by manufacturers' ignorance of this detail . I couldn't tell you why I it irritating, but there it is. I am glad that this detail was in your sights. I shall look into this jacket.
Thanks for another great video I want a Harrington Jacket
I love this style of jackets in a slimmer cut. I have a uniqlo Harrington in green that looks very similar to the green one you're showcasing here. I have one more in tan. But both of mine don't feature a plaid or tartan lining.
I have what I call a “Harrington-Style” jacket I got from a department store and I love it. It has zippered pockets and doesn’t have the ribbed cuffs and waist. Other than that, it’s modeled after the Harrington. Mine is black and looks great.
I own a Merc Harrington in light blue...excellent quality...timeless classic
Gotta say, the blue G9 with the dark jeans, driving gloves and grey polo top looks awesome on you. May have to steal that look ;)
Superb well researched video I’ve had several cheaper versions of the classic Baracuta G9 Jacket over the years but I may invest in the real McCoy this spring probably in a sand colour. 😊
Picked one up new for 129 euro's yesterday after seeing your video. Very pleased with it so far!
from which site?
@@MissSlovenia a small retail store in the city centre of Siena, Italy
I love Harrington's and have had 2 or 3. I wouldn't pay that much for one though as it is quite expensive for the average person but there are loads about. Being British, they are classic. Also popular with "casuals" and/or in terrace wear amongst football (soccer fans) in some quarters.
I have one in tan but going to buy one in navy.its great and feels quality
ANYTHING Steve Mc Queen wore ( or drove) is KOOL! Thanks for the video, great work as usual!
harrington and monkey boots, loved the look. keep the faith
I probably wear my G4 three days out of a week however Iv had trouble with the zip from day one and would love to know how to fix it .
My first harrington was Fred Perry and it was in 1993, from that moment this jacket its my best jacket just like m65. The best brands from my it Fred Perry, Ben Sherman and Wolsey( oldest mens british menswear 1755 ). Baracuta its expensive but maybe in futer I buy this icon jacket in classic black colour. The best for me in all harringtons its inside check material. Regards from Ireland.
Hi I know im 4yrs late but can you please answer my question why do some g9 jacket have the baracuta tag on the pocket and some don’t? Thank you
I have one in navy and one in a natural color and use them almost everyday, that’s makes it worth it in my book, probably the most versatile jacket I have 😎
Of course, it depends a bit on the climate you are in, but we find it very versatile too
I currently own a Harrington jacket, and I was wondering why my jacket's bottom waist area seems to be "short" like it barley reaches my waist. Should I get a bigger size? Is it suppose to be like that? Other than that it fits me fine.
So many timeless classics come from England; oxford shirts, Chelsea boots, Harrington jackets, Henley shirts etc
Is it possible to do a review on Warby Parker sunglasses? I’m interested to see if there quality measures up to the Luxotica sunglasses.
I paid $169 at my golf club for the same jacket without the name. I have had it at least 15 years now, in Stone color; like a Timex, it takes a licking and keeps on ticking, or keeping me dry on the links, love it, just looked, it is by McGregor
I have a Harrington jacket made in Harris Tweed it looks fantastic.
Picked up my second Baracuta, G9 this time for the first time directly from the store in Milan, incredible experience.
Although, the G4 remains my favourite.
A video on the Valstarino in suede would be fantastic!
I want to know if it is ok to wear a short sleeved dress shirt. Because I live in South Africa and we have a very warm climate, sometimes the temperature can hit 35°C+ (which is about 100°F) . But I still want to dress stylishly.
Does anyone know something about the time, where Baracuta produce the G9 in romania? are the products good and how old are these items ?
Where i can find the 4:06 design? I've been looking all across the internet and even on eBay and it looks like it never existed
If you were to wear a Alpha bomber jacket, what size would you wear? M or L. I want to buy online a Baracuta and it is difficult to decide 40 or 42.
Hi Sven... the size 42 fits you just right. The Baracuta website has this size detailed as having a 104cm chest. Is this accurate? And, if it's not too personal a question, what is your own chest size? Thank you
My father bought a G9 in dark blue. When i grew bigger, i got it gifted. i wear this jacket with pride.
Got 2 like new beige and navy blue ralph lauren ones off ebay for $35 each. Great purchase!!
For those wanting to know about fit if you head over to Atom Retro they actually sell the origional fit ones which they state is a loose fit and has more of a blousan silhouette ,the slim fit versions are the modern day ones.... and for the record, i am 54 years old and wore haringtons as a teenager, they were always a relaxed fit, none of this slim fit cant put your hands above your head garbage, i remember the ones i had as if it were only yesterday.
Omg I so wanna own this jacket! N the colors r just so gorgeous very difficult to chose one, wanna buy all of em haha
Hey guys, I was wondering when you were going to run a few summer wear outfits. I'm still wearing the same style as last and want to make sure that I'm still looking distinguished.
Thanks Raphael for showing da real deal 🤘🏼😁😄😅👍🏼
Could you do a Steve McQueen Style Video? I am sure many would love that!
Great Video.
Camo what? Would love to have a couple of these jackets in my wardrobe, being on the taller side, finding a brand that makes the style in a taller or long size is challenging.
I prefer jackets without elastication, especially in the cuffs. As a classic style. I would hope to get many more than 10 years from this item. I suspect the style has been updated as most heritage items have - it appears more fitted, especially around the shoulder (compare its present form with a modern golf jacket : the golf jacket has much freer shoulders to allow for comfortably swinging the club). I remember 15 years ago these were about half the price as they had fallen out of fashion, and the 60's style (I'm thinking slim fit suit styles) were still 5 years away
Anyone have one in black? Does it limit the versatility for outfits? Or might be more dressy? Any thoughts?
Is it warm? Can it be worn at 15°c?
What about the fred perry one? also made in england and the only difference i can see is the logo on the front
Where can I purchase the jackets
That green one looks like a “spetcovka” - Soviet plant worker jacket, especially the collar. Although it usually came in navy blue.
2:04 in the movie the red jacket that James Dean worn not a Baracuta. According to some post which is a DuPont nylon jacket made by Bud Berma. The jacket has white fleece lining and Talon zipper.
is ur jacket dark navy or navy?thank you!
I don't own a Baracuta Harrington (yet), but I do have three Ben Sherman Harrington jackets and those are simply great.
Just wondering what kind of car you drive?
I own a tan G9 and normally wear a 42R, but I had to size up because my arm movement felt restricted.
Great review. I ordered one - zipper line is plastic ( They've changed it. And it doesn't state what brand it is... Pretty upset about it...
I own a Baracuta G9 in tan size 42 for classic look. I bought another one in navy and sized down to 40 for slimmer and modern look. Both look awesome.
Hello. If you were to wear a Alpha bomber jacket, what size would you wear? M or L. I want to buy online a Baracuta and it is difficult to decide 40 or 42.
@@suarez_trabazo to give you a reference, I measured my chest using tape measure. Mine measured 44 inches and Baracuta size 40 fits well with a modern and a bit slimmer look. Size 42 is equally as great for classic look. Depends on what look you prefer. Hope that helps.
The G9 Classic is now on sale on the US website however icon colors like green and navy are excluded . Bummer!!
good to know about the arm length of this jacket, which would be definately a plus for me 👍
I used to borrow my dads navy blue one in the 80s. when i asked if i could have it he liked it a bit too much but he gave we his white one.
I think the Fonz once wore one in Happy days, that’s good enough for me!
What size did you get?!
I bought one last year, I love the look of the jacket but as a 6'2 215lbs guy I find it is always bunching up around the waist or my shirts peeking out the bottom when zipped. I usually wear it unzipped but I do wish it had maybe a couple more inches (perhaps a tall version)
The two I have are from Next but the very same style and quality plus I got them in the sales ,you simply can't tell the difference other than the name!
Very nicely done.
Proper skinhead Jacket from the original non racist reggae/ska loving working class brit folk. In my school it had to be black for the two tone ska. Terry Hall R.I.P 🙏
Hi! in your article you said “Cheaper buttonholes are sewn first and then cut leaving you with more residual threads”
it’s actually incorrect; to have “practice” industrial buttonholes sewing machine , it’s waaayy cleaner and luxurious to :
- embroider the buttonhole (yes it’s embroidery)and then cut
-have a 3 thread buttonholes, and having it “tailoring shape” with the bartack to stop it instead of the “denim” buttonhole shape
Did you find your Persols?
Posture makes the man.
My trouble with a Harrington is that i shave my head and end up in the few times ive worn one getting such remarks constantly
The coolmax fabric give the jacket a sheen and much more of a synthetic look, compared to the originals. The cut has gone back to a slim fit, while it was a much more blouson for a long time. I would say that there are other brands that make a better looking version of this jacket, and closer to some of the period pieces.
Found one of these today in TK Max for £80 almost £300 below retail value. Got so lucky 😁
Bought my first Baracuta around 1964-1965 and it only came in tan. Price was $22.50. Shortly after came navy blue and then olive green. Still have a tan and a black leather and a brown leather. Price of the leather ones was $150 each. Probably purchased in the 80's. When the jacket would get holes at the cuff we would cut off the sleeves and wear them over a hooded sweatshirt. We thought we were cool. I understand they are $400 now which is way too much for them. Remember, if you got the jacket dry cleaned you would have to get it waterproofed again.
I brought one from Uniqlo, and pretty like it.
What glove is that
I f I have a choice between a Baracuta and a Grenfell Harrington, I'd always pick the one from Fred Perry. But then again, I'm to bold to be a gentleman. The racing green ist nice though...
Lost your Persol sunglasses? Hells bells those cost as much as the jacket! (the Steve McQueen edition anyway). Good review of the jacket. If you can't afford the Baracuta, other makers like J. Crew sell their own version for much less.
I have the John Blair knock off. It's a fine spring jacket. I can't see spending almost $400 on one. Mine was $5 at a thrift store.
Hey Raphael, hab sie mir mal wegen deines Videos gebraucht für 75€ in Navy Blue gekauft! Hoffe es war ein guter Deal.
Sure the G9 is supposed to be a trim fitting jacket, but I think Ralph has one that is a size too small. I wear a 44 and I'm a smaller guy than Ralph. I was suprised I had to go up to a 44 (my Barbour Bedale is a 40) but a 42 to was just to tight, couldn't move or layer with it closed.
