The painful truth about breastfeeding

  • What they don't tell you about breastfeeding a newborn!! I definitely don't want this to be a breastfeeding vs formula debate because both are valid options and each mom has to choose what works best for them. Everyone is different! This is my experience with breastfeeding and how hard it's been for me.

Breastfeeding is so hard and no one talks about it! Before I gave birth, everyone told me that it was such a wonderful bonding experience with your baby… no one tells you how painful and isolating it is! Thank you for raising awareness about this ❤

I totally agree. I had such a hard time and so much pain I became very depressed. Pumping saved my sanity. Seriously, nobody told me it would be hard and I felt judged when I told the doctor how hard it was.

Fed is best! My milk never fully came in and dried up 3 months later I had to use formula. I love that you shared this! No one ever talks about the hard things, and there is so much crazy things that happens to your body both during childbirth and after.

Best advice I ever got was to make sure their mouth is WIDE open. (Like, the areola and all should be in there). Also, nipple shields saved the day.

I nursed all my children until they went to cups. No one in my family ever nursed before me so totally trial and air on my part. I heard an older lady tell me to use frozen cabbage leaves on sore breast and nippes. It became my best friend throughout my breastfeeding journey.

I suffered through 6 weeks of stress and anxiety pumping out what little milk and colostrum I made before we switched to formula and I always felt bad. I understand now that I needed more support and people who were actually helping and not making me feel inadequate
So happy you stuck with it 😊

The La Leche league was a godsent for me. My son refused to be forced to latch. The consultants in the hospital insisted that I force it. Once home, I got in touch with the local La Leche League. She came to our house. Her compassion and empathy were exactly what I needed. She had me just lay him on my chest. He wiggled his way down on his own and latched perfectly for the very first time. I had NO idea it was an option to let him take the lead. My supply eventually dwindled...which was really disheartening because my boss had excess supply with over 200 oz in the freezer, and I felt like a failure for a while. I eventually supplemented with formula. It took a lot of work to not be hard on my self because I REALLY wanted to be nursing only. However, the lessons I learned with my son really helped me when I went through it with my daughter.

I had my baby girl a few weeks before you, so its been fun to follow along with you as we are going through the exact same joys and struggles! I agree completely with EVERYTHING you said, breast feeding is so hard and you don't have the help you need at the hospital and after the hospital. Good job for figuring out the breast feeding and sticking with it. I decided to become an "exclusive pumper", so I feed my baby girl with bottles but she is getting my breast milk only. This has worked well for my husband and I...he can help with the feeding which is so wonderful! I just wanted let you and your viewers know that this is an option for new mommas, I didn't know about it, but it has worked well for us! Thanks for being honest in your videos and on social! You and Jonas are doing a great job! Lottie is so precious and adorable!

And lack of support in the US is a massive part of the problem. Where I live, maternity care is FREE, everyone has a midwife m, who sees them throughout pregnancy (some women will have a obstetrician if there's complications) and for over a month afterwards. You get all he info you need in pregnancy, and loads of support afterwards.

Love this so much. My baby boy was born September 20th! Breastfeeding is HARD, but I totally agree, by two months or so, things seemed so so much easier and more normal. The lactation consultants stressed me out and I ended up doing football hold for far too long. It was so awkward. Once I switched to cradle hold, we were both so much more comfortable. So glad you and Charlotte are doing great! Keep the videos coming!

You have the foremilk/hindmilk backwards. Foremilk comes out first and is thinner and more sugary. If your breasts get really full, it's mostly foremilk stored in the ducts closer to the nipple and hindmilk is the milk that's stored further back and that's produced during the feeding. Hindmilk is the fattier milk that comes out later during the feed, and if you have an oversupply, you might not get to that point very often because the baby has already had the max volume their stomach can handle before then. Unless your baby is excessively gassy or otherwise uncomfortable from getting mostly foremilk, it's best to not get too hung up on trying to "balance" foremilk and hindmilk. All of your milk is perfect for your baby. The main thing to focus on is baby getting adequate volume to stay on their growth curve.
Not to harp on it, but I wouldn't rule out a tongue tie based on your sister's evaluation, unless she is a lactation, medical, or dental professional that has extensive training in identifying ties. Nearly all pediatricians and ENTs aren't trained in it, very few pediatric dentists are trained in it, and even a lot of lactation consultants don't know what they're doing regarding ties. If there's any suspicion of ties, seeking out an evaluation from someone who has a lot of experience, a multi-faceted care team of specialists they work with, and a history of breastfeeding dyads with good outcomes after going through a treatment plan is super important.
I'm glad to hear you have found ways to work past some of the issues you've run into. Breastfeeding has a learning curve, and especially for us fair and sensitive skinned people, it can be uncomfortable while your body adjusts, but if it's frustrating you to tears and more painful than that initial stinging feeling that goes away after about 30 seconds during the first month or so, that's not normal and you should seek out professional help rather than suffer through it. Private IBCLCs tend to be much better at actually assessing your situation and helping you figure out what works best for you, rather than the hospital lactation counselors who are spread pretty thin and are more likely to just pop in for a few minutes and mash baby's face into your boob and tell you you're doing fine.

You sound really frustrated, being a first time Mom really sucks and I hated it! My kids are your age, and you all have the internet, which can be a good and bad thing. Take a deep breath and try and relax, you are a GREAT mom, I can tell because you are literally trying everything. I remember with our first, talking to our pediatrician and him telling me that first, I could call him anytime I needed to; second, my baby is so aware of Mom’s emotions so it was really important to try and remain calm, that way they remain calm. One day at a time, you will figure it out, I promise, remember she is just this size for a very small period of time. Enjoy it as it goes by so fast!

Definitely a struggle. We did childbirth and breastfeeding classes before baby was born. Did they stop offering them since covid started?
When my son was born there was a huge packet they gave me, and one of the pages had all the lactation and la leches contact info including websites, phone numbers, social media groups etc.
My insurance company also had post partum nurses to help over the phone and refer me to local help as needed. My Dr and my baby's Dr also had big chunks of each appointment for feeding conversations.
Please find out if your insurance company offers that. They also do post partum depression screenings, and it's so helpful.

I had a baby on Sept 18th (our first!) and I've felt some camaraderie watching your videos knowing we are at similar points in our journey I love all of your videos, including this one! Though something struck me that I felt called to reach out in regards to.
A question: When you say in the video "I think people QUIT or GIVE UP on breastfeeding too early", what is the desired affect of that comment on people who fall into that category? Using the words QUIT and GIVE UP are words that insinuate failure.
Another question to put it in a different context: If a fellow gymnast from your childhood "quit" gymnastics because gymnastics was no longer serving them mentally, emotionally, or physically... what if they just didn't know it but they were a few months away from huge progress and making an Olympic team. Would you make a video and say "I think people QUIT or GIVE UP on gymnastics too early and so many of them could have accomplished X, Y, or Z"? Probably not... you would probably express encouragement and congratulations for your friends/teammates being able to assess where they were at physically, mentally, and emotionally and making a change that would positively impact their lives and the people around them. Did you tell Simone Biles she GAVE UP too soon at the last Olympics and had she just "stuck it out" for a little longer she would have gotten through her mental health issues and wouldn't have "quit" on her team?
New moms have so much going on, as you know, and I see society as a whole frame the switch from breastfeeding to formula as QUITTING or GIVING UP... why is it not that we congratulate new moms for realizing breastfeeding isn't serving them or their families well and congratulate them for making a decision to do what is best for their family and keep the baby fed and most importantly LOVED?

I finally went to a lactation person & I have to use a shield as well!!! Then I got her to actually latch but let her eat too long so she burned all her calories & lost 1/2 a pound so now we’re back to breast feeding, pumping & formula! lol I’ve found if baby is very happy I can get her to latch without the shield!! It sounds like your lactation specialist didn’t give you thorough information. I breast-fed all three of my babies back in the 90s and I didn’t have any difficulties. I guess I was lucky that all the babies latched on well and fed well. I did learn with my first child That I was over feeding her a little bit when she was fussy and that would lead her to throwing up almost a whole feeding in her crib. That was because I didn’t know how much a newborn to one month old should breast-feed. And the young one would latch back on and feed more, when she wasn’t feeling well. We did figure it out together, and we no longer did the overfeeding.
I hope that you will be helping new mothers with the information you are posting because you are not the only one going through this. And remember every baby is different. Your next child may latch on well and with your experience from this baby, your breast-feeding experience may go well . God bless.

Put breast milk in the eye!! It help with the eye goop! I have had 6 kids and it worked so well for them when they had eye goopies! Lactation consultants are all kinda like that at it really is discouraging because they don’t explain they just shove and don’t really explain anything. The best people to talk to is just like you did: your family who has similar anatomy and who have breastfed! You’re a good mom to try so hard and go through so much to try to make it through your breastfeeding journey! Keep going! It is a beautiful thing if you and Lottie can eventually get to feeling more comfortable with it. My last one I nursed til almost 2 and he is sooooo smart and has always been very healthy! Anyway, good luck to you! Congrats on your new baby! It makes me so mad to hear of moms experiencing pain while breastfeeding because you shouldn't have to. I wanted a home birth but a surprise breech baby led to an emergency C-section. The nurses let her latch poorly and bruise me. It was so painful I had to pump instead but pumping also hurt really bad. She had a terrible lip tie which we eventually got released at 6 weeks. It took my milk 4+ weeks to SLOWLY come in. I was pumping every two hours and power pumping once a day to get my supply up. It was horrendous! I finally got her back to the boob at 8 weeks old and finally got her to learn to latch.
Also, the amount I talked to people about my nipples was crazy! 🤣
It gets so much better! And then teething can throw a wrench in it again. 🙄

Do what is right for you - there really is no such thing as giving up with nursing too soon. I would hate for you to put that pressure on yourself (or have other well intentioned moms to feel more pressure if they decide to not continue breastfeeding).
My kids are 18 and 12, and nobody looks at them (or their peers) and wonder how they were fed.

Yes breastfeeding is such a journey and it’s can be painful. Many don’t talk about it. I wish I had informational videos like this when I was trying to feed my son. Back in 2008 no lactation specialist came to see me. When he was born they asked if I wanna breastfeed him I said yes. I had no milk. He latched good at first. I didn’t want to give him a bottle. But he got jaundiced and they had to bottle feed him and brought him to feed off me every two hrs with the glow lights on him. Then my milk came in 3 days later all at once. It was so painful. My mom and grandma didn’t breastfeed so they couldn’t help me. I was so engorged had to use frozen veggies on it. Had to formula feed him and try to pump. I needed nipple cream it hurt to have him latch. 1st month was so hard. I was so young and didn’t know how to get help. But I kept at it. I was able to breastfeed him after a month or so after my breast and nipples healed. I did about 6 months and then switched to formula full time. I felt bad. But it was too much for me. He’s 15 now and happy and healthy. So keep going. You’re doing great. Fed is best. Always. Thanks for sharing. It’s so hard. Your an amazing mom ❤

I have 6 boys so I have a bit of experience in this area lol First of all, there is a lot of pressure to breastfeed but it is only good for the baby if it's good for you. I wise nurse once told me that if you are stressed out and having problems it is not worth it for both of you to pursue this. If this is not a great experience for you the baby will feel it and then it will not be great for her either. I breastfed all of my kids for different lengths of time ( 6weeks was the shortest and one year was the longest) depending on how things were going. The most interesting thing is that the child I breastfed the longest has the most allergies, eczema and he suffered from terrible ear infections as a young child. Alternatively, the child I breastfed for 6 weeks has been my healthiest so I really don't think you can determine long-term health outcomes based on this. Do what is best for you and Lottie as a team based on what you feel and not based on what other people are telling you. This is only good for the baby if it is good for you :)

Breastfeeding as a first time mom is incredibly hard! I cried through my first journey as well! i successfully breastfed both my babies for over a year! And I am currently pregnant with our third and will be breastfeeding this one as well! IT TOTALLY GETS BETTER AND BECOMES SO NATURAL! Definitely don’t give up!! It will become basically second nature to you! Also with the goopy eye, im assuming it’s a clogged tear duct. Put some breastmilk on it! just a drop or two! I did it with my kiddos and it cleared their clogged tear ducts within 24-48 hours. 🤷🏼‍♀️ it’s very healing topically! I would do the warm compress to open it up, then put the warm breast milk on it 🥰 just a suggestion, it’s something that worked for us! You guys look and sound like you’re figuring out what works best for you guys! Everything will come and go in phases as baby changes! You three with adapt and grow together!! Such a beautiful family!! I’ve watched you throughout your gymnastics career, as I was a gymnast as well. It’s been such an honor to watch you grow into a beautiful momma!! It may not feel like it at times, but being a momma is the biggest reward in life! Congrats Mykayla! you have accomplished one of the biggest hurdles a woman can in life! 🥰 it’s definitely bigger than any Yurchanko round off hurdle out there! 🥰 being an Olympic gymnast is one type of hard! And being a full time mom is a completely different kind of hard!

I bottle fed all 3 of my children. My children never got sick but all of the breastfed babies in my family were constantly sick. Don’t believe that formula fed babies don’t get proper nutrients they do. FED IS BEST. ❤

The journey is HARD. And there are so many reasons. Be careful of listening to other people’s stories bc every situation is unique. And if your mental health is struggling bc of BF difficulties do NOT think you’re failing by moving to a different way to feed your baby. If you can’t “get through” the hard times, that is okay. If mom is suffering, baby with also suffer. ❤

Be prepared that Lottie won't want to breastfeed in public at six months. I had to pump beforehand and give a bottle when we were in public. The looks I got when bottle-feeding out in public were awful. The joys of living in Utah.
I breastfed for 13 months. I went back to work when she was seven weeks old. My mom came and took care of her for six weeks. When she was 14 weeks old, she went to the daycare on Snow College's campus, and unbeknownst to me, my husband went over every day and bottle-fed her lunch. I learned this a few years ago. She is two weeks younger than you.

Pumping is the key! Freeze your breast milk!

I hope you have a certified Lactation Consultant. Sure sounds like you need help. I BF 2 boys for a total between them of about 5 years. Look up Neisha Salas Berry who is RN and Lactation Consultant.

Please try apply cabbage on your boobs. Shove it in your bra. My midwife told me to try it. My husband got some at midnight. It was almost instant help!

I’m sure you know this but formula is not an issue . No one is going to know when she gets to the Olympics if she was breastfed or not . Don’t make it hard on yourself

I breastfed all 3 of my boys and it was so hard esp the first 6 weeks. I had oversupply so it was a full time job with pumping, feeding, doing compresses, trying to keep myself comfortable etc
